It has helped us with the ability to distribute data to different data centers. As part of our DR strategy, we have nodes automatically replicating data from one data center to the other. This makes it easier for us to not have to shift tapes around.
In basics, Object Storage is used for a massively scalable and flexible infrastructure, where a single very large storage name-space is required. Traditional storage may not work for you in that scenario; on the other hand, object storage is not fit for the transactional type of workloads.
Some of the features that I think the Object Storage should have: very large and flexible data/content store, metadata-based data management, multiple storage tiers (SAS/SSD/SAS/SATA/tape/Cloud), efficient to/from replication and data protection with all tiers of storage, multiple geo-distributed sites support, deployment flexibility (VMs/Hardware Appliances/Physical installation), and storage management simplicity.
