Handles workloads and diverse applications efficiently
We have a lot of VMs on Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers. On a single server, we have probably hosted 14 or 15 VMs. Out of these, 8 to 10 are continuously running, and four of them are backup VMs, so it can handle a good workload. For cybersecurity, it is only accessible on the intranet; it is not accessible through the web. We use it for local development purposes, and it is behind our firewall. Its security is strong. We handle a lot of test data for government and confidential customers. It is safe and strong locally. We have not experienced any security issues. Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers have helped to reduce unplanned production downtime if we need to replace a hard disk, instead of completely shutting a server, there is a hot swap feature. It is quite good in that aspect. Usually, for any activity, there is a downtime of about 30 minutes. It has saved a lot of time. We have tried AI workloads for a development environment for a government customer in Singapore. The servers are hosted in Singapore. It is an ML-based engine with AI. It is a government project where data is processed, and we run it on Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers. The benefit of running AI workloads on PowerEdge Servers is that it is easy to allocate memory. The application we are running is memory intensive. It is pretty easy to scale memory and storage.

A good server with useful features like partitions
Huawei KunLun Mission Critical Server support can be better. HP has better support, and more customers have experience with this brand. For clients, there are opportunities to replace the server and take applications from the Huawei server to the Dell server. The server isn't the problem. The problem is with the applications and the database.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"You can use Dell PowerEdge hardware for anything. It supports everything such as file servers, web servers, and DB servers. It can support all critical servers and applications. There are bank applications running on PowerEdge servers."
"I would recommend Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers if you want reliability, sustainability, and greater performance."
"The enduring stability and longevity offered by Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers stand out as their most invaluable features."
"Overall, I rate Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers nine to ten as the product has maintained a strong reputation over time."
"Dell support is the best."
"iDRAC is the most valuable feature because of the ease of use and management and everything that it provides is super useful. The security features that PowerEdge provides, including firmware threat detection is good."
"The newer servers are more energy-efficient compared to older ones."
"VxRail has a smart and easy way to perform updates. The hypervisor on the other servers performs well according to the hypervisor level. The support is magnificent, and it's easier to administer the servers."
"Features like partitions are useful."

Cons

"From the host, you cannot read the external hard drive data inside a VM. They have a security restriction on it."
"I want Dell to offer more virtualization platforms because the cost of VMware is getting too high."
"The product must provide more options to add GPUs to the machines."
"After purchasing the product, customers have not been getting the support that they need in the early stages of getting set up. They can provide customers a little bit more education as to what they get with certain warranty levels. The data is there if the customers dig, but a lot of times, the customers don't dig. Some of the other server models come out a little bit quicker than Dell. It would be good if Dell is quicker to market on new, larger drives when they become available. Sometimes, we do get hit on that against a couple of competitors. Dell vets them a little bit longer than like the super micros to keep their stability and quality level up, but they lose a little bit of ground to a super micro. It would be good if they can release features and models as soon and as fast as they can. It would help them to stay more competitive."
"The only aspect that could be improved is the price."
"The BIOS interface could be improved; it is very poor. PowerEdge is very good overall, but if you compare the BIOS interface with HPE, it is not very good."
"The security of this solution could be improved. We have very specific needs as an engineering company and require multiple layers of security. This is not offered when implementing the Dell hardware."
"The maintenance for this solution could be improved."
"Support can be better."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"They seem to have become more expensive. I've not done a comparison with other vendors recently. If the price increases more, we would need to do a comparison next year just to make sure that we are benchmarking our server purchases correctly."
"I wouldn't say the solution's pricing is the best, but it's very competitive."
"Dell is somewhat more expensive than HPE."
"The licensing comes with a warranty."
"We do use Dell's OpenManage console. It is easy to use this console for lifecycle management or PowerEdge servers."
"The price is good for the quality of the Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers."
"It is expensive. The price needs to be more competitive. Additional licenses are required to enable some of the features for scalability."
"They are fairly priced."
