Simple, stable, and allows us to handle data from various sources, but needs enterprise features for logging, recoverability, and monitoring
If I could give any advice to the guys who are developing it, I would suggest them to really look at the enterprise features, such as being able to log what's going on, being able to capture the current state of processing, and being able to recover from error situations. So, there should be a focus on logging, recoverability, and monitoring. We should be able to monitor what's going on, and in case of any issues, we should be able to recover and restart processing and other things. For scalability and performance, I would probably suggest the Pushdown feature so that you can do the transformation directly on the data source. You do not need to do that calculation within the ETL server. For this, you should be aware of the type of data because each database or kind of storage, such as Hadoop, has its own ANSI standard or language, such as SQL. Microsoft, Oracle, and IBM have their own language. Based on the feedback that I have got, its initial setup takes some time. It could perhaps be simpler.

Used for wrangling or transforming data from sources like S3 and Databricks
I use Matillion ETL for wrangling or transforming data from sources like S3 and Databricks The most valuable feature of Matillion ETL is the UI experience in which you can drag and drop most of the transformation. Sometimes, we have issues with the solution's stability and need to restart it for…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Its simplicity and the way it handles graphs are the most valuable features."
"It has helped us to get onto the cloud quickly."
"The new version with the Productivity Cloud is very simple. It's easy to use, navigate, and understand."
"The product's initial setup phase was easy."
"The technical support treats us well. They already have a support portal, and they are responsive, which helps."
"Matillion ETL helps manage data movement, ingestion, and transformation through pipelines."
"The product is quite stable and can handle complex data integration tasks well."
"We allow non-technical people to use Matillion to load data into our data warehouse for reporting. Thus, it is easy enough to use that we don't always have to get a technical person involved in setting up a data movement (ETL)."
"The most valuable feature of Matillion ETL is its user-friendly graphical interface."

"Ideally, I would like it to integrate with Secrets Manager as well as the AWS."
"The tool's lineage is very weak."
"Going forward, I would like them to add custom jobs, since we still have to run these outside of Matillion."
"Unlike Snowflake which automatically takes care of upgrading to the latest version and includes additional features, with Matillion ETL we need to do this ourselves."
"One of the features that's in development is data privacy in the cloud, along with further SAP integration. For connectivity to SAP systems."
"I found some of the more complex aspects of ETL challenging, but I grasped the concepts fairly quickly."
"The improvement area could be possible if the tool provides better integration capabilities with other ecosystems, including governance tools or data cataloging tools, as it is currently an area where the solution is lacking."
"Sometimes, we have issues with the solution's stability and need to restart it for three weeks or more."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Its price and value for money would be okay for our purpose if there were some additional features."
"The solution's pricing is not based on the licensing cost but on the running hours when the Matillion instance is up and running."
"The solution is very cheap. You're paying $2.50 an hour and if you set your service up, which you can do, you're not getting charged. Currently, our ETL process is just an overnight process that runs for about an hour. I can start and stop my server just for an hour if I want to and spent $2.50 a day for an ETL solution. There are no additional costs."
"I think it is cost conscious. It used to be very cheap and they have more recently bumped up the pricing, so it is competitive now."
"Purchasing it through the AWS Marketplace is pretty convenient. There is a little bit of back and forth in terms of the licensing based on the machine size, but it seems to have worked out well. it is convenient to have it all as part of our AWS billing."
"The product must improve its pricing."
"It was very easy to purchase through the AWS Marketplace, but it was also expensive."
"A rough estimation of the cost is around 20,000 dollars a month, however, this is dependent on the machine used and how Matillion ETL is used."
"It is cost-effective. Based on our use case, it's efficient and cheap. It saves a lot of money and our upfront costs are less."
