The ability to configure rules to check for consistency has helped
Apiary provides a free tier of the platform which allows a small group of developers to collaborate easily on the design of open source APIs. In addition to this, it provides mock endpoints allowing people to experiment with the API without depending or having to stand up a real backend. With our clients, using Apiary allows us to very quickly pull together an API definition (particularly when using API Blueprint). The whole API design process for the simpler use cases can be done in a relatively short workshop which makes it a lot easier to agree, publish, version-manage an API definition with suitable documentation. This can then be evolved and enhanced (particularly in the documentation aspects). With the ability to support Swagger (Open API v2 and introducing/ed support for v3) and API Blueprint makes it a very versatile tool.

API management has strengthened security and monitoring but still needs better support and tooling
There are areas of IBM API Connect that need to be improved. I want what Gravitee made, which is much better. Gravitee made many samples for different use cases. First of all, they made examples of use cases, codes, and what the module expects and what the module returns for multiple examples and use cases inside the development. I do not even have to go to the documentation website because everything is included inside the tool when I work on it. This is great, in fact. IBM API Connect should show examples. One other thing is the support. The support of IBM is in India. Every time I want to ask something, they say they need logs, they want this, they want that. Gravitee API asks me to explain the problem without asking a thousand times as if it is a request for a green card in the USA. Then they really explain quickly. IBM is a big company, so everything is standardized with the approach of "You do that, you do that, you request that. If you do not have that, you do not reply to the client." Clients want flexibility today, even if it is a huge company. A stressed client is a client that will want to change to other flexible solutions. When everything is fine, we do not care, but when there is stress and problems, that is when the customer of IBM evaluates the tool really. It is when there are problems. IBM makes a lot of efforts on sales and technical sales, and then that is it.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Vey high - very easy API design with no setup effort"
"I do like the overall performance of the solution."
"Git integration"
"I find the generation of mock services very useful, especially when demonstrating for new consumers."
"The feature I find most valuable is that it offers authentication and allows us to develop communication points."
"In two years, there was one time the service was down for an hour or so."
"Quick and easy way to share a new API design with teams."
"This solution has allowed us to standardize API definitions and bring consistency into our shared components, reducing the effort and cost of using functionality across domains within the organization, with Apiary being crucial to our good API strategy."
"We work very closely with IBM on their product and they're very good support, so when we run into issues, they are there to help."
"The suite itself is what I find valuable; it has all of the tools that are needed for the specific mission, including the portal, the runtime, and security, so the solution itself is valuable."
"This solution is ready to scale and already supports our agile CICD."
"As far as API Connect, I think it offers us more flexibility with our application and potentially would allow third parties to come in and develop for us."
"The most valuable features are: 1. The centralized management: this provides a management module that can deploy and apply security policies to all APIs, including all the gateways that are deployed on-premises and on any cloud because the gateway component can run at a VMware or in a Kubernetes cluster."
"API Connect is an easy-to-learn, very advanced, reliable, business-to-business API management product."
"Since it runs on top of Datapower, all Datapower based custom policies can be utilized and exported to API connect but its not straightforward/simple process."
"I would certainly recommend IBM API Connect for clients who are going with an enterprise version of implementation and when they have enough budget."

Cons

"I don't think this solution is very stable so we try to manage stability from our side."
"Better Swagger support."
"The Oracle release cycle is very bad because the patches only update once a year."
"Swagger (OpenAPI Specification) and Blueprint Support"
"Validation messages could be a bit clearer."
"I would like an integrated option to download a Swagger version of the definition."
"The installation process could use improvement. I hope that in the next release, the installation process is easier."
"The administration of the user interface and the technical documentation are areas of concern in the solution where improvements are required."
"IBM info-center help documentation also needs improvement. Competitive product like Apigee provide out of the box policies to run Javascript, JAVA and better/flexible logging policies."
"Custom code needs to be written in order to connect to MQ and exchange messages. This can be achieved, but it is a tedious task."
"They seem to have left out a feature for microservices and also a certification module for OIDC."
"It should be cheaper."
"A lot of the features require improvement, such as better integration with the other suites of the product and a more secured way to put it on the cloud."
"The product's setup phase and its setup for the users in different environments, along with DevOps integration, are areas of concern where there is a need for improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is a free subscription option to start and try the service."
"It is easy to get started with personal (free) accounts, but a subscription is required for additional features."
"API Connect is quite pricey."
"It is expensive when compared to other products in this class. There were no extra fees for add-ons or technical support."
"The price for IBM API Connect is reasonable. It's $20,000 to $30,000 yearly for a subscription, and the pricing could vary around $40,000 per year, per subscription. Its price is reasonable for customers who have around sixty million API calls yearly for unlimited environments."
"We pay for the IBM API Connect monthly. We only need to pay the standard licensing fee."
"The price of the solution is very expensive, it can turn many customers away."
"The price of the solution is expensive. However, there are a lot of customization capabilities."
