What are the main differences between Oracle Exadata and Teradata?
Hi peers,
Currently, I'm researching these 2 Data Warehouse products: Oracle Exadata and Teradata. I'm trying to compare them and understand the main differences between them.
Teradata is not a difficult solution to work with, however, its setup may be troublesome, especially if you are not well prepared. You need to plan the setup in advance and prepare very well for it; your previous experience with other databases may not be enough. The setup is not straightforward, and you need to research how to do it or you will get tangled up and, like my company, need to contact Teradata to guide you through it. Once we figured out what our programmers were doing wrong, things started moving forward. The solution is easy to use but you definitely need some expertise to get it going in the first place.
Teradata is not a difficult product to work with, especially since they offer you technical support at all levels if you just ask. There are some features that may cause difficulties - for example, the modeling ones may need you to have some additional skills because they are not as flexible to use. The other things are self-explanatory; the architecture is very agile and the design of the solution is very good. If you read some tutorials online, I am sure you will not experience many difficulties working with Teradata. But like I said, if you do, you can contact them and in a short timeframe you will receive help from them.
Before my organization implemented this solution, we researched which big brands were using Teradata, so we knew if it would be compatible with our field. According to the product's site, the companies that use it include:
Air France-KLM Group
Vodafone Germany
Banco Bradesco
Texas Health Resources
Credit Saison
Medibank
Chungain Pharmaceutical
I think the list included more, but from the ones I have mentioned you can get the idea that the product is utilized by many big companies in finance, health, travel, and communications sectors across the world. We work in the healthcare field and seeing that those big companies used Teradata helped us to select it too, hoping that it will help us manage large volumes of data effectively and securely. It sure did – it has been a very valuable addition to our systems.
American Airlines is one of the most famous clients of Teradata. My organization operates within the transportation sector, and I think this solution is also suitable for:
Healthcare
Manufacturing
Telecommunications
I think Teradata is useful for companies within these industries because it offers them an open and scalable management system for their databases. It helps you optimize your processes through effective tools. My company started using it when we were medium-sized and as we were expanding, this solution kept up with us and helped us move forward alongside the growing amount of data we were now managing. I think it is suitable for all sizes of businesses in those fields.
