Reporting has become faster and more cost-effective but data cleanup and writes still need work
The best features OpenText Analytics Database (Vertica) offers are that it is parallel, with Massively Parallel Processing (MPP), and it is a columnar database. It works in append-only mode, which is ideal for analytics and read queries. Additionally, I can use it in Eon Mode in which I can store the data in cheaper storage such as Amazon S3 and have different compute nodes. That helped me save costs. Beyond that, it is massively scalable, which was quite useful for our fintech use case. The read speed was excellent, and the data compression is good. OpenText Analytics Database (Vertica) has positively impacted our organization by helping us reduce storage costs and improve reporting efficiency in our fintech company. The analytics team could run reports much faster, and we saved significant costs on compute and storage, especially with Eon mode and compression.

Provides self-repair features, but the setup is complex
We use the product for online applications. We use it in the financial industry The product has self-repair features. The tool tunes itself. It separates compute from storage. We can scale storage and compute separately. The setup is complex. Oracle is a complex tool. I have been using Oracle…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The performance is very good and the aggregate records are fast."
"The hardware usage and speed has been the most valuable feature of this solution. It is very fast and has saved us a lot of money."
"Vertica has a few features that I like. From an architecture standpoint, they have separated compute and storage. So you have low-cost object storage for primary storage and the ability to have several sub-clusters working off the same ObjectStore. So it provides workload isolation."
"Initiate on one node, and the RPM propagates automatically to all other nodes. "
"It maximizes cloud economics with Eon Mode by scaling cluster size to meet variable workload demands."
"It's the fastest database I have ever tested. That's the most important feature of Vertica."
"Bulk loads, batch loads, and micro-batch loads have made it possible for our organization to process near real-time ingestions and faster analytics."
"The feature of the product that is most important is the speed. I needed a columnar database, and its speed is what it's built to do, and so that's what really does differentiate Vertica from its competitors."
"The solution has a self-backup, so you don't need a DBA (database administrator) to do a backup."
"Self-patching and runs machine-learning across its logs all the time"
"One advantage is that if you already have an Oracle Database, it easily integrates with that."
"The solution is used for analytics and it works for our data security needs."
"It provides Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) capabilities by default to address data security issues."
"The solution is used for analytics and it works for our data security needs."
"It is an extremely scalable solution since you can dynamically change the resources as some other cloud solutions."
"The solution is self-securing. All data is encrypted and security updates and patches are applied automatically both periodically and off-cycle."

Cons

"I would personally like to see extended developer tooling suited to Vertica – think published PowerDesigner SQL dialect support."
"Monitoring tools need to be lightweight. They should not take up heavy resources of the main server."
"It needs integration with multiple clouds."
"They could improve the integration and some of the features in the cloud version."
"Vertica's native cloud support could be improved, and its installation could be made easier."
"It's hard to make it slow for a small data volume. For large volumes, it's hard to make it work. It's also hard to make it faster, and to make it scale."
"Limitations in group by projections is where I would like to see an improvement."
"In a future release, we would like to have artificial intelligence capabilities like neural networks. Customers are demanding this type of analytics."
"Optimization should be better."
"One of the major problem is creating custom tablespace. The ADB serverless option doesn't support custom tablespace creation, which could cause issues during on-premise database migration that requires specifically named tablespace. There should be an option to create customized tablespace."
"They should make the solution more user-friendly."
"There is a need for more storage to be allocated, but over a period of time, it becomes impossible to reduce it after using it."
"An improvement for us would be the inclusion of support for an internal IP, so we could use it directly with the VCN in Oracle Cloud."
"We are not satisfied with the technical support. Their understanding is lacking."
"The solution lacks visibility options."
"The solution could be improved by allowing for migration tools from other cloud services, including migration from Amazon Redshift, RDS, and Aurora."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Read the fine print carefully."
"I am aware that we have licensed it, but I have no knowledge of its cost."
"The pricing and licensing depend on the size of your environment and the zone where you want to implement."
"The price is reasonable. We use a pay per license model. Firstly, you need to buy a license. After that, you mainly pay the annual support fee of around 20% or 25%. I think their prices are quite reasonable."
"Start with license per 1TB. Starting from hundreds of TB there is unlimited licensing to be considered. Move historical data to HDFS/S3 which are significantly cheaper or even free."
"It is fast to purchase through the AWS Marketplace."
"Vertica is an expensive tool."
"It's difficult today to compete with open-source solutions. In these areas, there is a lot of competition and the price of this solution is a bit pricy."
"You pay as you go, and you don't pay for services that you don't use."
"ROI is high."
"We pay approximately $70,000 per month. The cost includes maintenance and support."
"Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse's pricing is fair and reasonable compared to the other cloud vendors."
"Cloud solutions are cheaper, but in the long run, they may not be much cheaper. They certainly have a lower initial cost. The licensing is yearly, and it is based on the size of the hardware and the number of users."
"The cost is perfect with Oracle Universal credit."
"In terms of architecture and pricing structure, I feel it is a little bit costly compared to Azure. It's fine compared to RedShift, but compared to Azure, it's a bit pricey when you calculate for one TB storage plus around five hours of reporting with the frequency of 1TB data. The cost adds up, making Oracle a bit expensive."
"The solution is expensive."
