Flexible licensing, negotiable pricing, and useful for data modeling
The only restriction comes when you have to work on the NoSQL databases and typically when you have to work on any JSON structures. There are some limitations. For example, it cannot work on NoSQL databases, and there is no update on that as well. However, you can still do the Logical Modeling for NoSQL applications. You can do logical models - just not physical ones. The tool should support NoSQL databases, like MongoDB, etc. When you implement PowerDesigner, and you do implementation on the server, you also set up a portal. The portal is a web browser link you set up, where a person can use the browser and easily see what models were submitted to the repository. If you want to manage access and edit a file from the browser, you can easily do so without installing Client.exe. However, that portal is very slow. The portal takes a lot of time to respond if you have a number of tables in the schema it will take minutes to populate these tables. Portal performance needs improvement. Everything else is good and it's really a good tool, however, if these things can be improved, it can be even better.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The product's most valuable feature is adaptability."
"I mostly work on the conceptual and logical side of things, and I enjoy how easy it is to use."
"The most valuable features of the solution are it's built very well, easy to use, and simple to describe freely what is needed in logical and physical data models."
"Has a specific template that's very helpful for importing metadata."
"I've used the reverse engineering feature a lot. I can take a look at the structure of the database and what relationships it has."
"The most valuable feature is that it is a very fast reverse engineering process. It does a very expansive comparison."
"SAP PowerDesigner is an excellent tool that does what I need it to do. What I like most about it is that it's stable, fast, and easy to understand."
"It has helped me to develop the as-is state, design its to-be state, and track the capital investment according to gap analysis."
"It's a great tool for documentation."

Cons

"They could provide a simplified process for building and deploying solutions in the cloud."
"One disadvantage of SAP PowerDesigner is that you cannot reverse engineer the ALTER statements, so that's an enhancement or area for improvement I'm looking forward to seeing from the SAP team in the future. That should directly reflect on the physical data models my company builds."
"The focus is more on mainstream development environments, and I see a lack of focus on the open source world. I think SAP PowerDesigner probably interfaces better with SQL Server and Db2 but not with open source databases like PostgreSQL and MySQL."
"I have found the solution not easy to use. When publishing you have to download the HTML, make adjustments against the updated HTML, convert it to HTML, then finally paste the HTML. There is not an on-the-fly function available to bypass the step-by-step converting process that other solutions have."
"UI could be improved by enabling simpler navigation."
"Connectivity can be improved because it's not very good."
"Checking-in models to the repository, especially when working remotely, is a slow process than can sometimes have problems with models being corrupted."
"SAP PowerDesigner can improve the ease of use. It is not the best tool on the market because it is tough to navigate and use. A beginner would not be able to use it well, it requires some experience. If the solution was more user-friendly it would be able to be used by more audiences. I do not think many people are aware of this solution and they should use it."
"This product lacks artificial intelligence that should be very good in terms of automatically identifying the classification of elements."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The platform’s pricing depends on the specific project requirements."
"I would like SAP to prove free licenses to professionals that are using the solution. The free version is limited."
"When you purchase the license for SAP PowerDesigner, you have to buy one year of support. The tool is worth the money."
"The price of the solution is too expensive. When we asked for certain licenses in different countries it was unattainable."
"PowerDesigner is not the cheapest solution on the market, so make sure that you are using it to its full potential."
"SAP PowerDesigner is cheaper than eriwin."
"The price of the solution is low."
