Good reporting, security, and works in multi-cloud environments
The primary use case of this solution is to discover all devices connected to the network. We use it for computer systems, laptops, printers, switches, IP phones, and servers. We are using it for creating reports about discovered OS versions and installed patches. We connected ADDM with the CMDB of…

Helpful in discovering vulnerabilities and used software assets
ServiceNow is agentless. This has advantages if you're not utilizing the CPU space of the machines you are discovering. However, the downside is that you always have to discuss logging into servers. It also requires credentials and figuring out where to store them, so an agent solution is likely easier because you only have the credential issue when installing it. After that, you are always in direct contact with your devices. This is also true for cloud because it tends to be immutable once deployed, and an agent makes it much easier to get on those devices. I believe ServiceNow is planning to add an agent, but it does not have that feature today. Regarding additional features, I believe ServiceNow is planning an introduction in more countries and adding service mapping, which goes beyond the discovery. The addition will try logging into a machine and discovering what connections one node has to another node or a database. Based on that, it will update the connections in the CMDB. So rather than observing the infrastructure and CIs, it observes the services. That will be another part of a separate contract.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is a scalable solution."
"It is a stable solution. The stability is okay."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is its application dependency mapping."
"It is agentless, which means you don't have to install anything on all the different pieces of hardware that you are looking to discover."
"Accuracy and clarity are vastly improved for the service lines."
"The tool's accuracy of the results we receive looks promising in general. Its values are more than 95 percent accurate compared to other clients or different tools. I would say that Discovery offers a valuable mechanism to discover information."
"The most valuable feature of BMC Helix Discovery is it operates well. It is well known and has gained recognition for its software."
"The solution is definitely useful."
"The most valuable feature is its integration with CMDB, as it collects all the data."
"I like ServiceNow Discovery's overall structure and the way data comes in without creating a different dashboard or interface."
"The solution can prioritize the discovery of IP ranges. The product automatically places all Discovery CIs into the correct class within the CMDB."
"They have a very good network in the infrastructure of Discovery."
"It has given us an understanding of each layer from a server application."
"They provide the ability to see into the Discovery tools I want. They offer the best tool view."
"In the past, I found troubleshooting difficult in ServiceNow Discovery because I didn't have much exposure to the platform during that time, but then I explored some troubleshooting features, and I found that it wasn't that tough, so this is one of the qualities I like about ServiceNow Discovery. I also like that log reading in ServiceNow Discovery is much better than other tools. Another valuable feature of the tool is that you don't need to install many tools to deploy ITSM. You only need to subscribe to the modules to deploy the proper ITSM in your organization."
"The best part about ServiceNow Discovery is that it is included in the ServiceNow suite."

Cons

"The solution is definitely useful."
"The solution's scalability is an area with certain shortcomings where improvements are needed."
"If the dependency maps can go live and we can work through the process with a click, we're reaching the stage where issues are identified and mitigated. It would be ideal if we could utilize it to reduce vulnerabilities or address any other feedback."
"The monitoring tools could be more stable."
"BMC Helix Discovery needs more customization options."
"An area that can be improved is the IoT."
"The product is not fully automated."
"There is still room for improvement in terms of stability."
"I feel that credential-less discovery could be improved."
"The product could improve some of the visualization and architecture setups."
"ServiceNow Discovery should improve its cloud capabilities."
"In future releases, I would like to see more AI-oriented enhancements in the solution. It would automate most of the things that we have to do manually write the scripts and go on the teleservice, what to do. So if we have something in place and if we can train the module, then AI would be a good thing."
"The solution is too high priced."
"Its integration with legacy apps is one area for improvement. ServiceNow Discovery offers out-of-the-box reports, and though that's okay, allowing easier report customization would improve the solution."
"They can expand on the plugins for some of the other tools."
"The initial setup could be made easier. We hired professionals to implement it, and they trained our employees for ongoing processes."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I rate the pricing an eight out of ten. All BMC products are expensive."
"The solution offers yearly licenses."
"The licensing fee is very low."
"We have a perpetual license for the solution."
"Operating cost is actually high compared to other products, actually. It's a little expensive only, but it's very good than other products."
"You need a license to use BMC Helix Discovery. The license is paid yearly, though I have no idea how much it costs."
"It's not a cheap product. But the benefits it delivers is that it's a fair price."
"The licenses are very complex and quite costly."
"I would rate the product's pricing a six out of ten. We had availed some discount from the standard pricing. Even then, the tool's pricing is expensive. You have to pay some vendor service fees for the product's implementation."
"It is not recommended for smaller companies because of the price."
"The product is not cheap."
"ServiceNow Discovery has very broad pricing, so it becomes costly. It would be better if it had a pay-as-you-use licensing model because the total cost of ownership is quite high."
"This is expensive, but it meets our needs."
"It is an expensive product with a price that depends on the models that you wish to purchase."
"The solution is very expensive."
"If the product is not deployed properly, it can be very expensive."

Hello Mohsin, Unfortunately, I don't have experience with ServiceNow Discovery. But I have been using BMC Helix Discovery for more than five years. It is a really fast and user-friendly system. There is no need for an agent when installing the solution. I recommend this solution.

I have implemented both, and BMC Helix Discovery including its earlier versions is a far easier solution to implement than the ServiceNow Discovery offering. The BMC discovery solution integrates with Remedy and ServiceNow CMDBs and is also a technically superior product if you also want application service mapping. Contact me directly if you need a more detailed explanation.

Hi Mohsin, Not only BMC Helix or ServiceNow Discovery, but a few other Discovery tools are also available in the market and every discovery tool has a unique feature, hence as per me, choosing a discovery tool for your organization should be based on the organization's needs and infrastructure. I suggest you go for proper requirement assessment sessions, i.e. infrastructure architecture, existing implemented tools, their features, use, possibilities & integrations, kind of devices in scope to discover, focused data center discovery,  focused client-side discovery, or both. What I mean to say is do not choose any tool for its features but choose the one best suitable for your organization that can provide the best output with less investment after a proper assessment of the organization's requirements and expectations from a tool. I know my reply to your query is not the exact answer you looked for but yes, this is what I would suggest to you on the basis of my experience. As far as tool comparison is concerned, you can find it in many places with the help of search engines but I think once you know what you want then reading tool features on the tool's official website will help you more to choose the best suitable Discovery tool for your organization. Thanks, Madhurima
