Thinking about my favorite feature in Foglight is like thinking about my favorite food. One of the hardest things to do in database management is to evaluate performance deviation across time. The adaptive baseline that Quest is using is by far the most helpful. That doesn't necessarily mean I use it on a daily basis, but it is something that I have not been able to find in any other tool, at the same level. Microsoft and Query Store do provide performance monitoring. There are a lot of legacy, built-in, free-of-charge tools that do part of the job, but not as comprehensively. Foglight's adaptive baseline monitoring and measuring of deviation is one of the best features of the solution.

It's important that Foglight supports different databases, starting with Oracle and including SQL, MySQL, Apache Cassandra, Db2, and MongoDB. Another good thing about Foglight is that we can visualize all the different types of DB servers that we are monitoring in a single pane of glass. It uses a 360-degree overview of the database, for each of those databases that we are monitoring. That includes what kind of resource utilization is happening and what kind of DB parameters are getting monitored, as well as the different types of DB parameters that are being offered for each database type. The UI is pretty simple. You don't need to write any custom scripts, the kind that are used in open source tools. You need to ensure that the DB servers that you're going to add have the necessary DB permissions, and the DB users, for the DB server to connect to Foglight. Once you have that, no matter what type of database, it's just a matter of clicking to add a database that you want to monitor. From the UI perspective, Foglight is good. They can improve it a bit here and there, but overall it's an okay UI.

The most valuable feature is the in-depth capability SQL Performance Investigator provides. It allows you to drill down to the smallest detail that occurs on our platform. It does a highly detailed and atomic follow-up of what one wants to look for in relation to time and our different instances. Foglight's ability to quickly diagnose and respond to issues is critical. It detects problems instantly, allowing us to respond quickly to any contingency. It is crucial because it maintains operational continuity while preventing extended connection losses and allowing us to be more proactive before the platform fails completely. I don't know if it's real-time, but every minute it sweeps our entire platform and gives us data. I think you can lower the timing. However, that might use up too many resources, so once a minute is good enough for us. I get email-based alerts that I classify as warning, critical, or fatal, and I typically schedule alerts for things that interest me, such as disk usage and memory. I set it up to notify me when those things reach a specified threshold. We use the solution's intensive database queries to capture failing transactions and see which are the most expensive, such as the ones happening right now or those paralyzing the engine in case of a crash. Email notifications are essential for detecting potential issues. But sometimes you don't see all the emails and users report a slowdown, so the dashboard tells you from the database about the instance happening, what transactions are running, who is running it, etc. It affects my database operations by slowing down the application connections. You must react to what is happening, see which process is triggering the bottleneck, and decide to either modify the process or wait a reasonable amount of time for it to finish and make the regulations you have to improve the coding. I am satisfied with its ability to monitor all kinds of systems. It allows you to centralize and even speed up operating systems and engines. We have a single engine and several operating systems.

"Quest must release a Spanish version. That's critical because not everyone speaks English in Latin America. It's an excellent product, so it's super important that they offer the application and customer service in Spanish."
"Foglight does have a component that allows you to look at things in real time, but it's not as friendly or as efficient in terms of responsiveness as Quest Spotlight is. Foglight might be lacking in this department."
"The version that I'm using is not the latest version, so there might have been some improvement, but the OS monitoring is a bit lacking, and the high-availability option is a bit complicated to set up and it doesn't work all the time."

"The price of Foglight could be a little more competitive in Chile, and it should be lowered for long-time customers— at least by 20 percent. Sometimes the price is a limitation. We have seven instances and nearly 5 million users. If Quest Foglight could reduce its prices for the clients that have been with it for a long time, we would be able to have more instances."
