A dynamic solution with a lot of great out-of-the-box calculations, but integration with reporting utilities is a bit painful
One of the things that have always been a bit painful is the integration with reporting utilities. The current integration is with Jaspersoft, and there are a number of difficulties with that. If you're using out-of-the-box fields and everything, it is a bit slow and clunky. It has a drag-and-drop interface for the users. On the backend side, there is a report designer. They haven't given or allowed me any training on it yet. So, it has been a bit limited in its features. On one of the earlier report utilities, they had one called Actuate, which had VBA as its base programming language, and you could do quite dynamic things behind the scenes, whereas the Jaspersoft interface seems rather locked. So, you're limited in your options. Being a programmer, you like to have room to be able to invent and create rather than just being limited to a few selection boxes.

Offers good repository integration, sprint board and easy to set up
There are some features and reports we need that are not there. For example, if I have to find out the capacity of the current sprint by user and compare it with the previous sprint, that visibility isn't there. We can know the capacity and what happened with the whole sprint, but not for an individual person to see where it's falling and how it's tracking. Report and analytics capabilities are important for a product manager. That visibility is important, so we use Jira. Some of the features are there, and I use my own Excels or other data things to compensate for that.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The reporting tools are superior to what was there before, which was someone crunching through an Excel spreadsheet. I've been able to do status reports through the projects, which has given visibility to my manager, and that's an improvement."
"Provides an overall picture, it gives you the ability to store your capex, capital and expense budgets, on projects."
"It is a scalable, easy-to-deploy, and user-friendly solution for enterprise businesses."
"Value streams, investment cases, road mapping, and fast destinations. These are the ones we use to manage stuff."
"Broadcom Clarity PPM is robust and flexible, and all the functionality sets are in one place."
"The new UX is great because it has helped remove some of those barriers, so that people who are not classically trained project managers can easily get up to speed in using the tool without having to learn a whole other tool set. It's very intuitive, and very collaborative, and very easy to adapt to their existing work styles."
"We have flexible scrum teams, developers that will serve on one scrum team for a few sprints or for a project. Being able to track where people go with the resource management features, and making sure that our teams are fully staffed, is important."
"Provides transparency through your investment portfolios at the top-level financial all the way down to the work that drives delivery."
"The JIRA user interface looks great. It's an overall good experience. It's very intuitive in the sense that you understand how it's going to work. It's very self-explanatory, and it's beneficial overall."
"Its visual display and ease of use are most valuable."
"It's very simple to change the workflow and adapt it. Jira is very user friendly for the agent and the user."
"Great for tracking my development team's productivity."
"The scrum dashboard is the product's most important feature. It provides an overview of tasks, who is working on what, and the status of each task."
"I enjoy working with (and can recommend) Jira for a number of reasons. The best features are that it is friendly and provides good visibility. It's to the point and very effective."
"It was easy to use. The consultants that we had on board were familiar with it. So, obviously, having a community that had used it before or was familiar with it was a positive thing."
"The most valuable features of this solution are workflow and reporting."

Cons

"The look and the feel of 14.4 is a bit antiquated."
"One of the things that have always been a bit painful is the integration with reporting utilities. The current integration is with Jaspersoft, and there are a number of difficulties with that. If you're using out-of-the-box fields and everything, it is a bit slow and clunky. It has a drag-and-drop interface for the users. On the backend side, there is a report designer. So, you're limited in your options. Being a programmer, you like to have room to be able to invent and create rather than just being limited to a few selection boxes."
"CA Communities need a lot of improvement."
"Broadcom Clarity PPM should improve how the reports are being generated and contracts management."
"Could be using more updated technologies."
"In terms of what could be improved, the end user interface could be improved to be more intuitive, because we sometimes have issues with customization. Sometimes we are not able to customize everything for the end user's interface, and they require more customization. We should be able to perform a deeper customization here."
"The user interface (UI) needs to be improved. Right now, it's not the best."
"I would really like a modern UI. I do not want to get on a user interface and feel like I am in the 1990's."
"It would be very useful to have drag and drop time tracking."
"For me, the solution is too complicated as it has too many features. It would be nice if they could streamline things."
"What I don't like is that perhaps there are not so many different apps that can add value over the management side of the product."
"When we use the plugin in Jira so, there are two different systems which we are working on, Jira and the X-ray plugin. The X-ray plugin should be incorporated into Jira because we have to fetch two reports. One report is faxed through Jira, and one can be faxed through X-ray. So there needs to be clarity about which the Jira team should reflect."
"The solution could improve by having its own tool for quality lifecycle management."
"Integration with some of the automation tools could be improved."
"The stability could be improved."
"I think that there is some ease of use that could be brought in to improve certain things."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price of Broadcom Clarity PPM is reasonable. My customers pay a license to use this solution on an annual basis."
"It is hard for them to say, "I have a person on my team who is going to be available, I am going to move that task to them". That requires a project management license, it doesn't require a team member license, so the licensing model does not sometimes support the way the business world is going."
"There are different licensing models with Broadcom Clarity PPM. With the software as a service model, you pay as you go, and if you are on-premises, you can buy a perpetual license and an annual fee for maintenance."
"In recent times, I have been involved in the purchase of the license for this solution. However, the process of procurement changed and the option to buy individual licenses was no more available. The new subscription model was introduced, as a followed-up trend in the industry. The subscription costs put us in shock because it was double what we paid in the past as the yearly maintenance. We negotiated and the price was dropped. But this incident made me observe a lack of transparency from Broadcom in terms of licensing expenses. This isn't unique to Broadcom but seems to be a broader industry issue."
"Pricing is flexible, depending on the customer and the region."
"It is a little bit costly compared to others, but it is mature. Customer should understand this product is geared towards project management, not financial management."
"Broadcom Clarity PPM costs us $500K, and that's only for the installation and kick off within the first year. For each succeeding year, it could cost $200K."
"The subscription is not that expensive."
"It is certainly a long-term solution for our company and for previous companies that I have worked for. They have these long-term term licenses, but I'm not sure if they really pay on a yearly basis. They are certainly using it for a really long period and for a lot of users."
"Our client handles the licensing aspect. They have not yet purchased the premium version."
"Its price is fine, but we would like it to be less expensive. We are paying on a yearly basis."
"It does not cost that much."
"We have a corporate license, and it is probably based on the number of people."
"I rate the tool's pricing a five out of ten. It's paid yearly."
"It's not very cheap. It's also not very costly. I'd rate it a five out of ten in terms of pricing."
"It is an affordable tool."

JIRA can do incident management, work configuration, and a lot of other different things. But we haven't found anything as compelling as CA Agile.
The tools are not overly complex for Agile. It appears that CA has recognized that. They're not just building the connector for Rally, but they are also allowing other groups to build connectors from JIRA into CA PPM and from other tools to CA PPM. If you are looking at open source products, why…
