Is easy to use, provides great visibility, and reduces our resolution time
Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring is easy to use. It helps us quickly analyze how our infrastructure is performing across various services. It helps with proper log management, allowing us to monitor our systems and analyze log data regularly. It also provides security operations capabilities for monitoring system health and ensuring uptime. We noticed these benefits immediately. Our operational efficiency has been increased. It has improved our system health by monitoring the performance of data on servers, virtual machines, and containers, along with overall background processes. Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring provides end-to-end visibility into our cloud-native environment. This is crucial because any data corruption can impact all the information we've deployed. It also aids in log management, offering parameters that extend its functionality as a comprehensive monitoring tool for CPU, memory usage, and network traffic. It has helped reduce our mean time to detect by four hours. Our mean time to resolution has been reduced by two hours. By providing access to all our network parameters, it simplifies log ingestion through streamlined calculations. Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring provides us with faster and more comprehensive insights into our infrastructure, allowing us to focus on critical business initiatives. We saw the time to value immediately after deploying Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The event management part of TrueSight Operations Management, in my experience, is probably the best in the market. You have endless flexibility. You can build your own rules, you have the MRL language, and you can implement any kind of logic on the alerts. It may be correlation, abstraction, or executing something as a result of the alerts. You have almost the whole range of options available for event management using the available customization."
"It is breadth. It covers so many different technologies which can roll up into a single console."
"Signature baselines, which have allowed us to fine tune many of our events and significantly reduce the number of events generated."
"Using the TrueSight platform we can monitor server performance and notify the customers using the integrated ticketing for events. We can let them know if there are any issues with a server, or application, or database."
"The ability of this platform to monitor the very diverse assets that we maintain around the world is its most valuable feature... We support a vast array of manufacturers' equipment, like HP, IBM, Cisco, Dell, EMC, Hitachi... We can do it all with [this] one [solution]."
"We're using native monitoring capabilities for all our server hardware, for visibility for applications, for URLs, for webpage response and accuracy, and for monitoring network throughput in a lot of particular instances. We're using lightweight protocols for pinging, for DNS, for LDAP."
"It works irrespective of the operating system we’re running."
"I like the deep-dive detail and end-user metrics data. The synthetic monitor is the best one. The best point of the new one is that there's no need for configuration. You can inject the Java script and start to change major developments in the application. This is a good approach, and we received all the data using this."
"Splunk has drawn our attention to how the network is running. If there are alarms on things that are not functioning, it gives us early warning on problems that could arise."
"The feature I find most valuable, is the data integration."
"The ability to create custom dashboards is one of the best features and that's typically why most people deploy Splunk. Users can create dashboards for just about anything."
"The solution's most valuable aspect is its ability to get information about all of the security measurements in my environment."
"The most valuable thing that we have seen within our group is the ability to ingest all this raw data and have it organized in a certain way so that different groups can get effective alerting from this massive amount of raw data that is out there."
"The solution's basic visibility is one of its most valuable features. So, it is a solution that is easy to use...The solution's initial setup process was straightforward."
"It can monitor, get the data, and then report on the data."
"I find the monitoring console very helpful. With one click, I can see how we are performing, and at the same time, I can see what data is flowing."

Cons

"This solution is lacking in application monitoring features. Technical support for this solution also needs improvement, particularly in product knowledge and response time."
"Reporting would be an area for improvement in TrueSight... We have almost 800 customers today on TrueSight and just under 10,000 assets. We need to be able to give a customer some information. If the customer's product fails, they'll ask us, "Did it have a problem beforehand?" We have all those events and we know all the problems it had beforehand. We have to be able to give them access to that kind of reporting. That's an enhancement that we need."
"We have a unique use case because BMC typically sells this solution into enterprises that are deploying it within their IT, versus to a managed services provider like us where we're supporting thousands of customers. Multi-tenancy and the scalability have been challenges along the way, as we've grown... If anything could have gone better as we were ramping this up and adding a lot of volume to it, I would say it's the scalability. That would be one thing that could be improved."
"BMC TrueSight Operations Management could improve the reporting."
"The one piece that I would love to see is a general-purpose, configurable agent which would be a framework that you can deploy on anything, whether it be Java or anything else. It would allow you to easily deploy it on a platform that they support."
"The UI for the end users could be improved and more flexible than it is now."
"The solution should improve predicting events and flaws in service. It also needs to improve integration with other systems."
"We were somewhat limited in TrueSight due to some of the RBAC controls not quite being what we wanted as far as delegating out administrative privileges for implementation. But because we were able to turn requests around pretty well, that burden wasn't too heavy."
"The price has room for improvement."
"The solution's stability is an area that has room for improvement. It needs to provide constant stability to its users."
"The cost needs to be re-examined. It's extremely expensive to run. It's also expensive to expand. That's the number one complaint all of my customers have when it comes to Splunk. It's way too expensive compared to other solutions."
"The implementation can be more user-friendly."
"Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring's data analytics can be improved by including suggestions for various types of continuous monitoring."
"We have both on-prem and cloud, and the challenge is getting all our log data aggregated or streams aggregated so that it is real-time. We do a pretty good job of that, but our organization is not using it as a security platform when it can do a great job of that."
"The end-to-end visibility is lacking because Splunk cannot directly monitor network devices."
"The clustering part of indexes can be more refined."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We did a five-year, multimillion dollar deal."
"It is a large, complex product. So, there is a commitment of manpower to deploy it, as it is not a cheap product."
"We pay license fees of between $150 and $200 per asset. There is an enterprise software license fee, and then you pay a percentage for your maintenance, and then Premier Support. For example, if you buy a two-year license for the product, then the maintenance fee is added to that for two years at X percent a year. Then there's a small fee on top of that for Premier Support..."
"The only possible additional cost that I can mention, that you might not be aware of, is that it uses Oracle partitioning, if you use Oracle. There are Oracle partitioning fees that go with that."
"Pricing is very high."
"Annual licensing amount depends on the customers requirements. Support is an additional fee and there are options for three and five year support."
"Pricing is all volume-driven. I think we were paying between $80 and $85 per license. That's per unit, for a perpetual license. You pay it one time and then, every year, you pay 20 percent of that for annual maintenance and support. But now that we've grown, we've purchased tens of thousands of licenses and the cost per license has gone down to something like less than $30..."
"Other products are more expensive than BMC TrueSight."
"The product is a bit expensive considering the competition but the company may negotiate the price."
"The solution's pricing is competitive. I rate the solution's pricing a seven out of ten. The price of the solution could be cheaper."
"Splunk's infrastructure monitoring costs can be high because our billing is based on data volume measured in terabytes, rather than the number of devices being monitored."
"I am not in that circle, but we are currently licensing based on our queries. That is working out for us. Previously, it was by volume of data, and now, we can store as much data as we want."
"I would rate the price of Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring as an eight out of ten, with ten being the most expensive."
"It is expensive."
"This is an expensive solution."
"Splunk has been fairly expensive, but it has been predictable."
