Rock-solid connectivity and WiFi coverage
It's a hardwired solution so our customers do not have to use a mesh network — I really dislike that. It causes too much delay, etc. As with any product, there is always room for improvement. A good router is not cheap. A good switch is not cheap. Let's say somebody develops a new frequency — 7GHz. Well, in that case, you'd need a special router. I have some customers who request Cat7 for their homes. That's way too much. So I'd say, "What are you going to run over here? Let's just run fiber optics. Then the customer will respond, "Well, I read somewhere and other people have told me that if you're going to wire your house, go with Cat7." I'd say, "Sir, you're not going to even utilize Cat5e." I use Cat5e, and believe it or not, I can pump at 10 gigabits per second with Cat5e. The same was true with ePoE — now we have ePoE+. Some switches with ePoE cannot supply as much juice as the modern ePoE+, which requires much more power. The basic switch doesn't have the capacity to deal with that. The documentation could be improved; it's quite basic. It pretty much just covers some basic IP information, defense, and how to change the administrator password — that's pretty much it. I am a dealer, I shouldn't have to contact support for basic answers.

Cost-effective protocol support and a straightforward setup with room for login enhancements
In the network operations center, I manage our client's bandwidth. We connect with our clients through BGP and OSPF based on client demands. We also manage routing protocols, policies, internal firewalls, and other details like QE bandwidth, client manage bandwidth management, PoE, PPPoE, and DNS…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is less expensive than other options."
"The ePoE+ is great."
"Remote access to the router is a huge time saver."
"It is a stable solution. I have been using the solution for a while, and I don't face any outages or trouble while using the solution."
"I think they have very strong routers because they have multiple processors. I like its easy configuration with applications. For example, configuration with Linux, Iptables, and routing protocols."
"We have not had any downtime with it. It has been a solid performer that way."
"The most valuable feature is that you can do anything on all platforms."
"The pricing is very reasonable. It's not too expensive."
"I have found one of the most valuable features to be the hotspot network."
"I've never had any issues with the solution."
"I rate MikroTik Routers and Switches nine out of ten overall."

Cons

"Documentation and access to it could be greatly improved."
"You do need to be an IT person in order to handle the initial setup. An AV person would struggle a bit."
"The documentation could be improved; it's quite basic."
"The solution needs to improve its security firewalls and mirror that of, for example, Sophos, or FortiGate."
"The solution needs to be more robust. In case of power fluctuations, MikroTik routers are more vulnerable to malfunctioning."
"I would like to see a cluster feature added, where multiple devices can be configured and managed as one. One is in a standby state while the other is active, and if one fails then the other takes over."
"Improvements could be made in terms of SD-WAN capabilities and zero-touch provisioning."
"I think the documentation of specific features could probably be improved. Especially if you want to try a new feature, sometimes you must test it thoroughly before implementing it with the client because the documentation doesn't give you the full background."
"The solution does suffer from freezing and corruption issues."
"The Soft-GRE support needs to be improved."
"The solution is a complicated device."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price completely depends on the environment. There are no additional fees."
"A license is not required."
"The pricing of the solution is significantly lower than other solutions. There are no additional costs involved."
"The tool offers a one-time buying option."
"MikroTik is very cost-effective and quite good for the price. It performs very well. For one of our customers, the existing setup comprises Cisco Catalyst switches, and it is about 10 to 15 years old. We're looking into upgrading in a cost-effective way to get the performance and yet still be at par with the quality and expectations that customers have from Cisco. Price-wise, Cisco is really expensive, and customers are expecting something different than Cisco so that they can save on IT costs. They don't have the same budget that they had before when they installed Cisco products. That's why they're looking for a solution that can provide performance and features without too much money or investment. We're looking at some alternative brands, such as NETGEAR and MikroTik, to support our proposal."
"The pricing is very reasonable and is one of the main selling points for MikroTik devices."
"When you buy a license, it is for life and you don't need to buy another one every year."
"The tool is cheap."
"Pricing is not an issue."
