Synthetic Web Monitoring allows us to automatically react to site reliability issues
Pros and Cons
  • "The Recorder for setting up a synthetic monitor is a really great tool for non-technical staff to be able to set up a monitor."
  • "Synthetic Web Monitoring allows us to automatically react to any issues regarding site reliability."
  • "Adding people to alerts has not been very intuitive. That's really my only negative feedback."

What is our primary use case?

We use Dynatrace for its Synthetic Web Monitoring. This allows us to automatically react to any issues regarding site reliability.

How has it helped my organization?

The best example has been cost. We used Pingdom previously and Dynatrace proved to be a similar solution at a lower cost.

What is most valuable?

The Recorder for setting up a synthetic monitor is a really great tool for non-technical staff to be able to set up a monitor.

What needs improvement?

Adding people to alerts has not been very intuitive. That is really my only negative feedback.

Alerts help us to minimize application downtime; server monitoring is very accurate
    Pros and Cons
    • "The best part of Dynatrace is that the tool is very lightweight and very easy to install."
    • "The server monitoring is very accurate in this tool. We are able to prevent many critical Incidents."
    • "The one thing I do not like about Dynatrace is that their web dashboards are very very slow. They seriously have to improve their web dashboard configuration and SSL timeouts."

What is our primary use case?

    Minimize application downtime.

How has it helped my organization?

We are able to solve many problems using Dynatrace. The main thing we have achieved using this software is minimizing the downtime of our applications by reacting to the alerts that it triggers.

The server monitoring is very accurate enabling us to identify the issues proactively and fix them.

    What is most valuable?

    • The best part of Dynatrace is that the tool is very lightweight and very easy to install.
    • It is very simple and interesting to install agents on the multiple servers.
    • I like the UI and dashboards that we can build on Dynatrace.
    • The PurePaths section is very very informative. It points exactly to the exception and we can pinpoint using parameters.
    • We are able to generate many reports which we were not able to produce before. This helps in visualizing the data better and in presenting the data in more advanced ways.

    What needs improvement?

The one thing I do not like about Dynatrace is that their web dashboards are very very slow. They seriously have to improve their web  dashboard configuration and SSL timeouts.

For how long have I used the solution?

    One to three years.

We monitor end-to-end availability of the application and deep dive PurePath analysis of real user visits
    Pros and Cons
    • "We monitor end-to-end availability of the application and deep dive PurePath analysis of real user visits."
    • "Enterprise application monitoring for synthetic, as is, only captures http/https transactions."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is to monitor end-to-end availability of the application, performance of the transaction test-wise and step-wise, and deep dive PurePath analysis of real user visits.

How has it helped my organization?

Dynatrace is an excellent APM solution. I have been working on products, like synthetic monitoring, user experience management, Keynote, mobile testing, etc.

    What is most valuable?

I found the way Dynatrace analysis engine analyses the data feed and presents it to the user from dashboarding and charting to out-of-the-box reports is very useful.

    What needs improvement?

Enterprise application monitoring for synthetic, as is, only captures http/https transactions.

Easily identifies problems from network layer to application layer, saving us time
    Pros and Cons
    • "Dynatrace can look into application transactions at the packet level, which pretty much relieves us of the work of manually collecting, analyzing, summarizing, and presenting the data, as we had done in the past."
    • "The customer support is not quick and helpful at this stage. We are deploying Dynatrace into our network. I've raised a couple of technical questions with the support team but the response was not fast and didn't cover all my questions at all."

What is our primary use case?

We're implementing an end-to-end service monitoring solution, using Dynatrace as a key component. Dynatrace is being deployed in multiple key probes through the end-to-end path. A centralized service analysis probe and report server have been deployed as well, to present the data in a friendly way, and the dashboard matrix can be customized for business usage.

How has it helped my organization?

The operation team gets a much more efficient tool to monitor the service end to end, 24/7. As soon as the monitoring service shows any performance downgrade, there are many tools inside Dynatrace to help us quickly troubleshoot.

    What is most valuable?

Dynatrace can look into application transactions at the packet level, which pretty much relieves us of the work of manually collecting, analyzing, summarizing, and presenting the data, as we had done in the past. For example, with Dynatrace it's easy to identify the problems from the network layer up to the application layer, which saves us much effort and time.

Dynatrace is also very easy to configure based on our business requirements.

    What needs improvement?

To be honest, the customer support is not quick and helpful at this stage. We are deploying Dynatrace into our network. I've raised a couple of technical questions with the support team but the response was not fast and didn't cover all my questions at all. I have had to ask some questions two or three times yet, to date, I still have not received a good answer for some questions.

For how long have I used the solution?

    Still implementing.

I can review behaviors, trending issues, and resolve issues before they impact our clients
    Pros and Cons
    • "It highlights areas that we could be doing better and increases our performance metrics by showing the biggest pain points."
    • "I can review behaviors, trending issues, and resolve issues before they impact our clients."
    • "Some of the APIs and integrations are a bit tougher than others to integrate."

What is our primary use case?

Full stack monitoring capabilities. Containerized monitoring is huge for us as majority of our applications are using containers.

How has it helped my organization?

It highlights areas that we could be doing better and increases our performance metrics by showing the biggest pain points. The analytics are amazing!

    What is most valuable?

The big data analytics is the most powerful tool at my disposal. With the analytics, I can review behaviors, trending issues, and resolve issues before they impact our clients.

    What needs improvement?

Some of the APIs and integrations are a bit tougher than others to integrate. Django would be amazing!

Integration within the CI/CD pipeline helps us detect application faults upfront
    Pros and Cons
    • "UEM (RUM): User Experience Management (real user monitoring) puts you in "user's seat" and gives you insight into how they experience the application. Often, this gives a totally different view than just watching the backend calls."
    • "24/7, all transactions: The fact that every transaction is captured gives us the possibility of acting on every exception. But it also shows us what happens when everything works well, so we can compare it with the moment something goes wrong."
    • "Integration within the CI/CD pipeline helps avoid problems in production by detecting application faults upfront."
    • "UEM (User Experience Management) works great for web clients and Android and IOS apps, but for other rich clients it's a lot more challenging."
    • "The new Dynatrace solution lacks test-automation integration inside the CI pipeline. I hope that will arrive soon."

What is our primary use case?

We use it as an Application Performance Monitoring solution for customer applications we support. For other customers, we implement it on their applications, onsite or in the cloud.

Most important use cases for us:

    • Trouble-shooting when something goes wrong - slowness, unavailability of any kind, errors.
    • Integration within the CI/CD pipeline helps avoid problems in production by detecting application faults upfront.
    • Dashboards for business and management display user satisfaction based on real measures like Visually Complete.

How has it helped my organization?

For our own organization, we manage to support a large application with a lot of users with only a few people (DevOps team). The insights we get via Dynatrace make sure that we can act quickly on incidents, or often even prevent them from happening at all. This way, we avoid "war-room" scenarios and focus on the things that matter.

    What is most valuable?

UEM (RUM): User Experience Management (real user monitoring) puts you in the "user's seat" and gives you insight into how they experience the application. Often, this gives a totally different view than just watching the backend calls.

24/7, all transactions: The fact that every transaction is captured gives us the possibility of acting on every exception. But it also shows us what happens when everything works well, so we can compare it with the moment something goes wrong.

    What needs improvement?

UEM/RUM works great for web clients and Android and IOS apps, but for other rich clients it's a lot more challenging.

The new Dynatrace solution lacks test-automation integration inside the CI pipeline. I hope that will arrive soon.

For how long have I used the solution?

    Three to five years.
