We can know exactly what happened in what time with PurePath
Pros and Cons
  • "We can know exactly what happened in what time with PurePath."
  • "I would like to know if classes and methods selected in "Method Sensor Rules" were changed in the applications, and not depend on the developers to warn us."

What is our primary use case?

To discover the root cause of problems and improve our applications or environments based on very specific and detailed informations that AppMon brings to us.

How has it helped my organization?

Developers have started to consult us (the Application Support Team) more than before AppMon had been implemented.

What is most valuable?

PurePath lets us see the steps of a transaction and the time of each one, then we can know exactly what happened in what time.

What needs improvement?

I would like to know if classes and methods selected in "Method Sensor Rules" were changed in applications, and not depend on the developers to warn us. Today, if the name of a class or method that I previously selected in "Method Sensor Rules" or in "Sensors" were changed, I am not aware of this. I will not know until I need some information on Dynatrace AppMon. Maybe just a warning if a specific method or class in "Method Sensor Rules" does not exist anymore in the application is enough.

Facilitates tracing and pinpointing bottleneck issues so we can fix them
Pros and Cons
    • "I would like to see Dynatrace be more user-friendly. Sometimes there are too many options to use from, which is good, but it can become confusing on how to proceed."

What is our primary use case?

We use it to identify and trace bottleneck issues, pinpoint them, and fix them.

How has it helped my organization?

One example is that we were able to identify a SQL query which ran multiple times (redundancy) and fix the issue, improving the overall system.

In addition, we are able to look for errors in the logs so we know what is wrong with the system, and then get a developer to fix the issues.

There is also a lot of information, such as a user satisfaction index, to learn about the customer experience regarding page load times or errors encountered on different pages. This information is valuable for the design team.

    What is most valuable?

Although there are many useful features in Dynatrace, I personally find PurePaths to be the most useful. This is the key element that I will use when trying to identify a problem.

    What needs improvement?

I would like to see Dynatrace be more user-friendly. Sometimes there are too many options to choose from, which is good, but it can become confusing on how to proceed.

For how long have I used the solution?

    Less than one year.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our experience with Dynatrace is pretty good. We were using another monitoring software but Dynatrace has far more comprehensive and useful details to help us to identify bottleneck issues and fix them.

The ability to drill down from an alert into a problem and pinpoint the source of an issue saves my client teams hours of time
    Pros and Cons
    • "Dynatrace makes it so much easier to proactively solve problems before they become big headaches, and easily pinpoint the root cause of an issue."
    • "Transparency and visibility into application performance, errors, incidents, etc. helps to foster a collaborative environment."
    • "The ability to drill down from an alert into a problem and pinpoint the source of an issue saves my client teams hours of time."
    • "The user interface is complicated, but recent web versions are getting better all the time."

What is our primary use case?

I recommend Dynatrace to all of my clients for Server Monitoring/APM. It makes it so much easier to proactively solve problems before they become big headaches, and easily pinpoint the root cause of an issue.

How has it helped my organization?

Transparency and visibility into application performance, errors, incidents, etc. helps to foster a collaborative environment.

    What is most valuable?

The ability to drill down from an alert into a problem and pinpoint the source of an issue saves my client teams hours of time.

    What needs improvement?

The user interface is complicated, but recent web versions are getting better all the time. The improvements and new features in each release are great.

For how long have I used the solution?

    More than five years.

It provides deep insight to code, quick root-cause analysis and quick bug fixing.
    Pros and Cons
    • "Quick root cause analysis"

How has it helped my organization?

At the moment, we are focusing on internal IT processes covering the entire application lifecycle. Later, we would like to work on EUE.

      What is most valuable?

      • Deep insight to code
      • Quick root cause analysis
      • Quick bug fixing

Dynatrace provides a clear view to application code; it reviews code to decide where to place check points to collect information. Based on that, it is able to specifically identify where in the code it is experiencing either an error, issue or performance trap. This also provides third-level support with a clearly specified place for resolution without needing to re-create the error. It reduces the amount of time required for communication between all of the support layers, as they can share the same info - what has happened, what was result, where it happened - so in the end, it leads to quicker issue resolution.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is well-skilled and competitive.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Dynatrace was chosen as our first solution.

      How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was quite easy and straightforward. The solution by itself assigns a place for sensors. You just need to properly set ports and IPs.

      What about the implementation team?

We implemented it almost entirely in-house, with some remote vendor support.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is based on the number of servers monitored, so for big applications, it is a bit expensive.

What other advice do I have?

First, make a detailed analysis of the purpose for such a tool, and then define detailed requirements they plan to achieve.

Helps to find and repair performance bottlenecks before they get out of control
      Pros and Cons
      • "The most valuable features for us include problem detection, root cause identification, Smartscape, and integration with cloud infrastructure like AWS, Azure, GCP, etc."
      • "Most of the time, chat support is not good enough for answering queries."

What is our primary use case?

We get APM requirements from various customers raising concerns about poor performance for their application. They do not know what is wrong and, most importantly, what is causing it. Dynatrace has helped a lot to identify performance bottlenecks and helped to fix them before the impact is increased.

How has it helped my organization?

Partnership with Dynatrace has given access to training, their knowledge base, etc. This has given us awareness about the latest trends in technology and how we can utilize Dynatrace to align with it. We have gained customers’ trust that we can provide them the best value from the Dynatrace solution.

      What is most valuable?

The most valuable features for us include problem detection, root cause identification, Smartscape, and integration with cloud infrastructure like AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.

This solution supports integration with Gen 3 solutions.

The following features are also valuable:

      • PurePath and stack trace details
      • UEM (User Experience Management)
      • Service flow mapping
      • Ease of deployment
      • Kubernetes monitoring

      What needs improvement?

The chat support definitely needs to be uplifted. Most of the time, chat support is not good enough for answering queries. Local support should also be increased.

There also needs to be more frequent training for partners, so teams can be enabled on product features and enhancements.

PurePaths, where you can see the stack trace, is helpful in finding problems
      Pros and Cons
      • "RCA (Root Cause Analysis) and the PurePaths, where you can see the stack trace, are helpful in finding problems."

What is our primary use case?

We're using it for monitoring our infrastructure, product reservation, so we're making sure that it's up 99% of the time.

We've been using it less than six months. As of now, it's working well.

How has it helped my organization?

Because we have a 15-minute SLA, we have to see the root cause of the problem or the alert, what's the issue. It helps us to determine, quickly, as much as possible, to know what the issue is, what the problem is, and where it is. Also, it's helpful when there is a correlation on all, on the whole service and applications.

        What is most valuable?

        • RCA (Root Cause Analysis)
        • PurePaths, where you can see the stack trace and everything; that helps.

        What needs improvement?

I haven't used it long enough to know what additional features might help. But I am looking forward to the Davis AI feature. That's exciting.

For how long have I used the solution?

        Less than one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Right now, stability is okay. We haven't had any downtime.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

        Scalability is good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using some old tools but we're decomissioning them and transferring to Dynatrace. We're also using currently using SCOM. So Dynatrace is an additional tool.

We brought on Dynatrace because it's an in-depth monitoring tool; we needed that. SCOM is not enough for our products, so we took another one for the troubleshooting.

What other advice do I have?

Regarding a single solution that could provide real answers, Dynatrace will help because it will give you a lot of data, based on what I've heard at this Performance 2018 conference. Because we have not yet been using Dynatrace for a very long time, at this conference I have seen that it will be very helpful because of all the data and information that it will give you. It's an end-to-end solution.

When selecting a vendor the most important criteria are, of course, the cost, the usability, and if it's successful in the market. Also, if it will give us what we need.

I rate this solution eight out of 10 because I'm seeing you don't have to update everything. Once you've applied the one agent, it will be automatically updated if you turn on the automatic update.

I would advise that you check it out and try it.
