A stable and stable solution which is easy to set up and allows for real-time hardware changes
Pros and Cons
  • "A great feature involves real-time hardware changes."
  • "USB dongle-based licenses do not allow us to directly locate the USB ports on Nutanix."

What is our primary use case?

The solution allows us to make use of high IOPS requirements.

How has it helped my organization?

We used to go with a traditional architecture, storage and server. Now, with Nutanix, we have 30,000 IOPS, up from 1,000.

What is most valuable?

A great feature involves real-time hardware changes. There is no need to shut down any VM during the hardware changes.

What needs improvement?

The solution does not lend support when we connect with a few dongle licenses. There is a need to make use of certain third-party USB switches through which we can have USB access. USB dongle-based licenses do not allow us to directly locate the USB ports on Nutanix. Other than this, I have no complaints.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Nutanix Acropolis AOS for the last four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is certainly stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I do not recall contacting Nutanix's support within the past four years. Nutanix sends us daily alerts and messages. A year-and-a-half ago I encountered a RAM failure, but there was no need for me to log a case with Nutanix, as the call was automatically logged and an engineer was sent to deal with the problem.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously made use of Scale Computing and HPE SimpliVity.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was quick. Previously, the operations involved three days of downtime but, with the solution, the initial migration from traditional architecture to Nutanix lasted three hours, instead of three days. It was so much quicker.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the implementation on our own.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is quite good in comparison with HPE SimpliVity, Nutanix Scale, and even traditional architecture. We found Nutanix's pricing to be the best. We did not incur license fees as we did with HPE Simplivity's VMware licenses, so this kept the costs down.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Nutanix Acropolis AOS as a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Best support, good performance management, and good availability and failure debugger
Pros and Cons
  • "There are a lot of features in Nutanix that are different from other hyper-converged solutions, such as site-to-site replication. VM-based site-to-site replication is bundled with the software licensing. For the DR, it has the availability groups, which is one of the key features that Nutanix provides."
  • "The only problem is that not many operating systems are supported on the AOS hypervisor. They need to probably increase the support on multiple operating systems. As of now, a very limited number of operating systems and patch levels are supported on AOS."

What is our primary use case?

We have three clusters of Nutanix. We are using Nutanix Clusters for all of our Intel-based workload. The majority of applications are Oracle databases, application servers, our file services, email hosting, etc.

How has it helped my organization?

The machines provisioning times have reduced drastically. The single pane of glass management provides ease of management.  Storage

What is most valuable?

There are a lot of features in Nutanix that are different from other hyper-converged solutions, such as site-to-site replication. VM-based site-to-site replication is bundled with the software licensing. For the DR, it has the availability groups, which is one of the key features that Nutanix provides.

Its performance management is pretty good, especially the software-defined storage that Acropolis provides is pretty good.

As far as the availability is concerned, it has RAID nodes, so the availability is pretty good. In case of failure, the system automatically shifts machines from one node to another. Their failure debugger is very good.

What needs improvement?

The only problem is that not many operating systems are supported on the AOS hypervisor. They need to probably increase the support on multiple operating systems. As of now, a very limited number of operating systems and patch levels are supported on AOS.

In terms of additional features, a lot of backup solutions have integration with AOS, but not many backup solutions provide a solution for VM backup. So probably, in the next release, they can make the backup solutions compatible with AOS for VM backups. It would be great.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using this solution for the last three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is rock solid, no software issues or compatibility issues may be because we are using it over

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is primarily a scale out solution. New nodes can be added pretty easily and workload can be divided on the fly including that of Software Defined Storage that comes with Nutanix Hyperconverged Solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

I am very satisfied with their support. Nutanix has probably one of the best support in the hyper-converged industry. Whenever there is a problem, they usually fix it within hours.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

VMWARE and Hyper-V are good alternate solutions but if you are using AOS on a Nutanix Hyperconverged solution, than AOS provides better integration with the solution. If the requirement is to fully leverage Nutanix Hyperconverged solution than AOS is the go to hypervisor.

How was the initial setup?

Its setup is very straightforward. You just have to plug in the nodes and power them up. That's it. It will automatically rebuild itself and be available. It is shipped pre-configured.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are three variants in AOS pricing.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

The Evaluation included VMWARE and Hyper-V. The software defined features required including software defined storage, Performance throughput, scale out architecture etc which were not directly related to hypervisor selection but more geared towards Software Defined Data Center put Nutanix Hyperconverged and to fully leverage its functionalities put AOS in front.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Nutanix Acropolis AOS a nine out of 10. It is pretty good.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Fair pricing, well-equipped customer support, scalable and plenty of tools
Pros and Cons
  • "In terms of scalability, adding a number of nodes, I find that it will not be any issues."
  • "The ability to create clusters faster would be nice to see in a future release."

What is our primary use case?

We have a lot of homegrown applications using the solutions within the generation and distribution within the company. These internal teams that develop that software, they are primarily on a different architecture. The ones we use are Java and Oracle with Weblogic as the application server and the other one used is Lan Stack. We have been using this configuration for more than 60 years.

What is most valuable?

The solution has single-window management, the ability to create VMs and monitor their usage on the fly, and the ability to add more resources if required. There are a lot of tools the solution comes with and the performance is good.

What needs improvement?

The ability to create clusters faster would be nice to see in a future release.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for more than one year.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of scalability, adding a number of nodes, I find that it will not be any issues. Upgrades are very easy, I can run compatibly check and then download the upgrades that are available. It is just a mouse click.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have been quite happy with the support from Nutanix during the past year. They have well-equipped support staff always on the phone when I am in contact. They know my architecture, subjects that are important for me, and the staff is quite conversant with the tool that they use.

How was the initial setup?

The implementation was straightforward and we are currently only using a fixed node cluster.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is fair for the package.

What other advice do I have?

In terms of the solution overall, there are positive responses from my side.

I rate Nutanix Acropolis AOS a nine out of ten.

These Must be the most oldschool applications out there of you have them since the roaring sixties!

But I think there is a typo, right?

Agree on support but your review is quite generic. Would comply with other solutions out there(vmware   with ops).

Dont feel the nine you are giving. Do you use other products too? Like Files, Karbon?

Please elaborate a bit more.

Feature-rich, good data protection that is easy to set up, and it has improved our overall performance
Pros and Cons
  • "The virtualization environment is now much easier to manage and maintain, there is only one vendor to call in case of issues and one single console to manage everything."
  • "I think some of the tasks that must be done using CLI could be added to the web interface."

What is our primary use case?

We've implemented Nutanix as part of a hardware refresh project. We've replaced two chassis with 28 Server blades, two storage devices, and four SAN switches by 12 Nutanix nodes.

First, we had moved some development and test workloads before sending production workloads. The first wave was successful and we couldn't wait until moving more workloads to Nutanix. We were anxious because this HCI was something we have never experimented with before and at the end of the day, it was the best thing we've done in our infrastructure.

How has it helped my organization?

We couldn't have chosen better, as we were able to reduce our data center footprint by two-thirds, reduced the management tools and teams, eliminated the SAN complexity, increased the IOPS metrics, and increased the overall performance by 40%.

We were also able to reduce our support contract with a third-party vendor that manages our environment due to the footprint reduction and also the SAN and Storage decommissioning.

The virtualization environment is now much easier to manage and maintain, there is only one vendor to call in case of issues and one single console to manage everything.

What is most valuable?

There are lots of great built-in features such as the one-click upgrade, data protection, data locality, very fast and non-disruptive snapshots, single pane of glass, etc.

We are applying patches and upgrades every quarter using the one-click upgrade feature and we have never run into an issue. The updates go smoothly with no outages at all, and we do everything including firmware updates, AOS updates, foundation updates, hypervisor updates, all at once and it goes perfectly fine.

The data protection is also a great feature that is very easy to set up and includes lots of options for snapshot retention. The consistent snapshots are great for Windows application and database servers.

What needs improvement?

I think some of the tasks that must be done using CLI could be added to the web interface.

I think it is kind of frustrating, opening a CLI session going through all the CLI commands you have to run to accomplish that task and then get back to the web console to continue doing what you were doing. It would be much easier to have that same setup option available on the web console.

Also, I believe that running several different commands through a CLI can increase the chance of typos/mistakes, resulting in a bigger issue.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Nutanix Acropolis AOS for one year.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used a different product before this one, and we moved to reduce complexity.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The setup cost, pricing, and licensing are very competitive and TCO is very low compared to three-tier solutions.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated VMware vSphere with VSAN and NSX, as well as Azure Stack.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Good interface with easy onboarding and simple to customize
Pros and Cons
  • "It's easy to use and has a very smooth onboarding process."
  • "The cost of the solution is too expensive. There are other options, such as VMware, that are offered for less money. In Latin America, it seems to be overpriced for the market."

What is our primary use case?

In most of the cases, the clients use the solution as a file server or database with data and another solution. Mostly, there is hyperconversion with Acropolis and its hypervisor.

What is most valuable?

My experience with the Nutanix Acropolis is good from both a reseller and end-user experience.

The automation is excellent.

The product offers a quality hypervisor.

The solution offers very good customization.

The administration with the prem solution is very good.

Overall, it's quite a comprehensive solution.

The user experience is very good.

The product has a very nice user interface.

It's easy to use and has a very smooth onboarding process.

We find the performance to be excellent on this solution.

What needs improvement?

The cost of the solution is too expensive. There are other options, such as VMware, that are offered for less money. In Latin America, it seems to be overpriced for the market.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the solution for one year at this point. It hasn't been too long.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We've found the stability to be excellent. There aren't any issues around its reliability. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's not buggy at all.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Nutanix scales better than VMware, however, the pricing is an issue. As you scale, it costs more.

Typically, the customers that use Nutanix are larger organizations as the cost is quite high and an SME would not necessarily be able to afford it.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is very good. We're quite satisfied with the level of service we receive.

We also find that the documentation is very good and quite easy to understand, which helps with the usability of the product.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also deal with VMware. There's some competition between the two as VMware is less expensive.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex at all. it's very easy and straightforward. The onboarding process is also nice and simple. We've had a good experience.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Between VMware and Nutanix, the price of VMware is lower. In comparison, Nutanix is pricey.

What other advice do I have?

I work for a distributor of Nutanix that also handles VMware. However, I market the Nutanix solutions primarily. We're resellers and we're a partner of Nutanix. We use both on-premises and cloud deployment versions. We tend to use Google and Amazon clouds when we use cloud deployments.

The platform is very easy to use and the administration functionality is good. Even in relation to VMware, which is cheaper, I like Nutanix best. It's easy to learn and the processes of configuration and onboarding are fantastic.

Overall, I would rate the solution eight out of ten.

It works and has good scalability and support
Pros and Cons
  • "In general, being able to patch and not having to pay for SanDisk is the best thing about hyper-converged."
  • "We had a few problems with the foundation machine that you can use to build your systems out. We've got it working now, but it should be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We mainly use it for virtual machine workloads on Application servers. We want to use it for disaster recovery and the way they replicate between sites. It has already got these features, but we just haven't implemented or tested them yet.

How has it helped my organization?

We have just put it in, so I can't say anything about that yet.

What is most valuable?

In general, being able to patch and not having to pay for SanDisk is the best thing about hyper-converged.

What needs improvement?

We had a few problems with the foundation machine that you can use to build your systems out. We've got it working now, but it should be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for two weeks.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable so far. It is pretty new, and there are no issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. I can add or take nodes away really easily. We did that, and it works great.

It is only two weeks old, and there are probably hundreds of people using it.

How are customer service and technical support?

They are very good. They know what they're doing. I would rate them a nine out of ten. We had a couple of different guys trying to help get us set up. One said one thing, and the other one said another thing. Neither of them was wrong, but they weren't on the same page. That's why they don't get a 10 out of 10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use any hyper-converged solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. Nutanix pretty much brings somebody along for the foundation of your system, which makes it really nice. This is one of the features we liked in Nutanix.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Its price is fine. I can't really complain about that.

What other advice do I have?

Take a look at the network requirements for the solution. It tells you a lot about the efficiency of it.

I'd give it a nine out of ten because it works. It does what they say it does. It is hard to get a 10 out of 10 for me, but it is a pretty good solution. If I rated other companies I've worked with, they'd get sevens or sixes. I like Nutanix. They're doing a good job.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Good lifecycle management functionality and technical support, but many features need improvement
Pros and Cons
  • "Nutanix does a superb job with technical support."
  • "It's lacking in some features but overcompensating in others."

What is our primary use case?

We have had customers who wanted new hardware and new software with a certain price point in mind, and didn't want to pay the VMware licensing. We switched them to Nutanix Acropolis.

What is most valuable?

Our clients like several features including the micro-segmentation flow, the one-page management through Prism, and the LCM (Life Cycle Management) that Prism offers.

What needs improvement?

There are several features that need improvement. Some of the areas are:

  • The Nutanix flow is only for micro-segmentation functionality.
  • It doesn't integrate with their cloud solution.
  • It's only for on-premises, even though they have micro-segmentation, it doesn't extend it through the cloud.
  • It (Flow) doesn't work with the XI frame.
  • Life Cycle Management is very simplistic for the HPE DX.
  • Some of the applications are not supported yet.

We have to look at the ecosystem that Nutanix is trying to create. It's lacking in some features but overcompensating in others. They are trying to be holistic, but they have a lot to catch up on when it comes to VMware. For example, they only support Citrix, and if you run Nutanix Acropolis you can't run VMware Horizon. There are limitations and the Kubernetes solution is limited.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been dealing with Nutanix Acropolis for quite a while. I have many certifications with Nutanix.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is fine, as it is advertised, but I can't attest to any performance indicators because I haven't stress-tested it.

How are customer service and technical support?

Nutanix does a superb job with technical support. Technicians who work your case answer their phones.

What other advice do I have?

It's a good alternative, but it doesn't have all of the features. It's not on par with VMware but it is a potential alternative. It's similar to comparing Apple to Oranges.

If you are invested in the infrastructure and that is what you have to consider, but it's not easy. Overall, it's good software.

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

Within a short span of time we can increase the capacity of the RAM or the hard disk
Pros and Cons
  • "We like that the size of the box is 1U or 2U only, and all the servers are fit into that box. The ease of operation is there. All the servers and the SAN storage are inside the box."
  • "Pricing and varieties of options could be better."

What is most valuable?

We like that the size of the box is 1U or 2U only, and all the servers are fit into that box. The ease of operation is there. All the servers and the SAN storage are inside the box. So there are no wires, cables to manage. Secondly, since it is a hyper-converged infrastructure, we can scale up very easily. Suppose, for example, we were using 24 TB SAN last year, and now we are increasing up to 96 TB SAN. That is very easy to do with Nutanix. Just install the hard disk, enterprise-grade SAS or SSD, and expand that particular SAN. So within a short span of time, we can increase the capacity of the RAM or the hard disk. With how compact the equipment is it saves us a lot of space in the racks.

In previous years we had six to seven server rooms, those are consolidated to only one server room now. We have only one server room and the space of that server room is hardly is 200 square feet. Cooling is easy, the amount of cooling needed is also reduced, so the administration becomes very easy. Reports are generated very easily. Additionally, we can configure the machines, we can create the VDI, for example, at a fast pace. Within four, five minutes, we are able to create the machine.

What needs improvement?

Pricing and varieties of options could be better. I represent an educational Institute, higher education. So, the cost is a major concern. Secondly, we have the 1000 and 3000 series. So we would like to see that graphic virtualization. It should support all the open standards as well as Nutanix. If the other vendor brought some SAN or NAS, it should be very compatible with that. I would rate it at a nine on a scale of ten.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Nutanix Hyper-Converged Infrastructure for three years. We use the 1000 series.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable and scalable also. So even if we are facing the power problems, the machine restarts immediately after the power is resumed, and the machine is a rugged one. So definitely a stable machine.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is very scalable and easy to scale quicly.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is also very nice. They have partner support and direct Nutanix support. We are getting better support from Nutanix. So I can rate them with an A grade.

How was the initial setup?

The Nutanix Hyper-Converged Infrastructure is easy to install. Initially, it took around one and a half days to understand the complete setup, but now once we understand the setup, we can install the complete setup within two to three hours.

What other advice do I have?

I strongly recommend the product.

I would rate it a nine out of ten.
