Global support personnel, even without expertise in market data, can now easily and quickly run respective market checks and escalate with pinpoint data.

What is most valuable?

Geneos enables customized aggregate views and alerts for both related and disparate components. This flexibility and insight facilitates proactive and prompt causation analysis. Simply put, you can easily see everything at once. If there’s an issue, you’ll know why within seconds, rather than spend precious time trying to find out.

How has it helped my organization?

Global support personnel, even without expertise in market data, can now easily and quickly run respective market checks and escalate with pinpoint data.

What needs improvement?

The Geneos configuration has greatly improved since the nascent version 1.0 days, but still requires specialist knowledge and convoluted config debugging when something’s not monitoring as expected. A hierarchical variable/component reference tree and more readily accessible examples would be welcome.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used it since the early 2000s, in the halcyon days when it was branded as ITRS NetAgent. I had led its feasibility test and global rollout for my previous company’s Triarch and TIBCO platforms. ITRS was new to TIBCO at the time, so we had worked closely to add the necessary platform-specific features; ITRS has always been easy to work with.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We had no issues with the deployment.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

One original glaring issue had been the lack of fault-tolerant Gateway Servers, but that had been remedied in a release a few years ago. We also had issues with slow Gateway startup and high CPU usage, but subsequent releases and reducing the number of config include files resolved the issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There have been no issues scaling it for our needs.

How are customer service and support?

ITRS support personnel are generally top-notch, with a technical account manager who personally sees through each query or ticket.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Various iterations of TIB Hawk, Traverse, and in-house written apps had sufficed, but never truly provided centralized, customizable, easy to use, and market data specific monitoring available via ITRS Geneos.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup itself is straightforward. There’s a single server (two in fault-tolerance) running the master “Gateway” process, and each monitored server runs a “Netprobe” process. Each tarball is extracted to a single folder, rather than strewn all over the file system. Upgrades are likewise easy.

To not run Netprobes as root, some network monitoring features necessitated writing in-house scripts to feed alongside into Geneos, but that’s also its flexibility in action.
Rather than a cookie cutter setup, you will likely find yourself continually tweaking features and adding new alerts to suit your needs.

What about the implementation team?

Since ITRS was introducing a totally revamped Gateway version 2, ITRS provided a consultant to advise on the initial configuration template, which we then customized and expanded upon.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The insight into finding the weakest links in the infrastructure has enabled us to proactively upgrade servers and networks in measured phases, rather than in a big bang approach.

ITRS has recently streamlined its pricing model to be a bit less granular (computation engine is now standard, for instance), which may or may not benefit your needs. The accounts team is amenable, so try to strike a deal, whether in cost, free training, and/or onsite consultancy.

What other advice do I have?

There’s a reason even Thomson Reuters retired their own monitoring product, in favor of licensing ITRS Geneos.

This is a great tool to automate the manual day-to-day checks, but the dashboard can't provide different status levels.

What is most valuable?

The dashboard is a valuable feature.

How has it helped my organization?

The 'start of day' (SOD) and 'end of day' (EOD) checks were automated by using this tool, thus reducing the amount of manual work needed by almost two hours per day.

Its use of SNMP provides valuable information without affecting performance.
Pros and Cons
  • "ITRS uses SNMP to communicate with our devices as well as SNMP net probes installed on our servers."
  • "I would also like to see suggested guidelines to accomplish a monitoring task. The issue is that ITRS is so flexible that there is more than one way to complete a task, each with benefits and disadvantages."

How has it helped my organization?

With ITRS, we are able to monitor in real time our infrastructure, whether it is hard disk failures, number of or failure of processes, and switch port packets being dropped.

What is most valuable?

ITRS uses SNMP to communicate with our devices as well as SNMP net probes installed on our servers. ITRS’s use of SNMP provides a lot of valuable information from the device without affecting performance.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see a user community established to assist with implementing and supporting the product.

I would also like to see suggested guidelines to accomplish a monitoring task. The issue is that ITRS is so flexible that there is more than one way to complete a task, each with benefits and disadvantages.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is 9.5/10.

The Technical Support Specialists know the product very well but not the client environment. I would recommend that a copy of the ITRS configuration for each client reside within a Technical Support Library to assist them in diagnosing and solving each client’s issues. I have no issues with utilizing SFTP to transfer my configuration to an ITRS secure server when I make a change; of course, a Save Online button would help.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Tivoli was used prior to my start. I personally used PRTG and ITRS is significantly better.

How was the initial setup?

As stated, the issue is that ITRS is so flexible that there is more than one way to complete a task.

What about the implementation team?

An in-house team implemented it with assistance from ITRS.

What was our ROI?

This product saves us a lot of time in development.

What other advice do I have?

Plan and implement the initial framework for the enterprise size as reworking for growth would be a challenge.

I like the Toolkit module which allows flexible scripts to be created and inserted into Geneos without having to log onto the server.

What is most valuable?

The Toolkit module which allows flexible scripts to be created and inserted into Geneos without having to log onto the server.

How has it helped my organization?

We now get more detail about the servers than before and thus it helps us to maintain a good service for our customers.

What needs improvement?

I would like it to have a better Dashboard viewer for report building. Having something like Crystal Reports embedded with the Active Console or active console would help to build reports.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used this solution for years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

There were no issues with the deployment.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We had no issues with the performance.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I had issues scaling it and ended up having to distribute the load over seven gateways.

How are customer service and technical support?

6/10

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Sentinel which was awesome but it did not provide metric views.

How was the initial setup?

It's straightforward. You take it out of the box and it's simply plug and play, but it really depends on what you would like to use the product for. My advice before setting up would be to plan on what you want to achieve the product, what you would like to view without logging on to the server, what you need to know from the server, and what your customer would expect from you.

What about the implementation team?

We did the implementation in-house.

What other advice do I have?

It's a great and powerful tool. You can input anything you like into the tool, including a database for analysis.

Adding new monitoring nodes is quite straightforward.
Pros and Cons
  • "Tons of default modules which are available out of the box"
  • "The main feature that needs work is the Dashboard designer."

Valuable Features

  • Scalable
  • Fast
  • Extremely customizable
  • Reliable and powerful
  • Tons of default modules which are available out of the box

Room for Improvement

The main feature that needs work is the Dashboard designer. Although it has lots of features included we would like these visualization capabilities to be improved. Currently we have to export metrics data in real-time into some other visualization tools in order to get better picture and have a bit more functional dashboard.

Stability Issues

We have had no issues with the performance.

Scalability Issues

Adding new monitoring nodes is quite straightforward.

Customer Service and Technical Support

The ITRS central Help Desk is absolutely awesome. You can receive a reply within a few minutes even if your query is not urgent or critical. Specifically with ITRS, if you need to configure basic monitoring - it is simple and straightforward too. If you require complex systems monitoring, tickets workflow, alerts, etc. it will require certain skills and experience.

Initial Setup

Every popular monitoring tool has a pretty straightforward installation workflow. Configuration might be more complex though.

Implementation Team

All ITRS installations we implemented by local TR Solutions team here in Moscow. There is no particular implementation advice, you have free training materials, a very detailed Active Console, Gateway and particular modules documentation, and the Help Desk are always ready to help.

Other Solutions Considered

We’ve used some popular and well known open source tools for some research purposes. There are the same pros and cons comparing to other open source and proprietary tools. We had to get ITRS usage skills and experience as we use it internally as well as our customers.

It allows us to monitor each stage of the production lifecycle and allows real-time monitoring of key services.
Pros and Cons
  • "Real-time log monitoring with desktop alerts is valuable as it tells us immediately when there is an issue."
  • "It needs to be easier to configure, especially with the JMX plugins."

Improvements to My Organization

It allows us to monitor each stage of the production lifecycle and allows real-time monitoring of key services.

Valuable Features

Real-time log monitoring with desktop alerts is valuable as it tells us immediately when there is an issue.

Room for Improvement

Real-time log monitoring with desktop alerts is valuable as it tells us immediately when there is an issue.

Stability Issues

We had no issues with the performance.

Scalability Issues

It's been able to scale for our needs.

Customer Service and Technical Support

It was very good, the support staff were well trained on the product and helpful with their responses.

Initial Setup

It was simple as the set up is well documented and available across different operating systems.

Implementation Team

We performed it in-house. It is great to set a few hours aside a week to dedicate to playing with the application to make it perform as you want and make it aesthetically pleasing. It is also well worth mentioning that it is a constant process of refining and tweaking the alerting and monitoring settings as the application changes.

Other Solutions Considered

It was more fit for purpose in terms of real-time monitoring with dashboard metrics than other monitoring applications.

Other Advice

Understand the different types of alerts and customize it to meet the needs of your application. It can do as little or as much as you set it up to do, and building out a front-to-back solution is a big project, but can provide great benefits.
