Regular backup/recovery is the main feature, but I really like the Exchange mailbox recovery tool, and the ability to isolate test environments.
It is really easy to use as well, and it's a powerful backup/recovery solution.

Fortunately, we have not had to use the restore functionality (touch wood), but it does give us the reassurance that we can perform a restore if needed, in a real situation as well as performing regular testing in our virtual lab. The other functionality that has really had an impact is being able to granually restore Exchange mailboxes.
I really cannot think of any areas that stand out as needing improvement right now, to be honest.
We've used Veeam for two years. We started with the free version of Veeam ONE, then we paid for Backup Essentials because we were so pleased with it.
Not at all, we found it to be extremely intuitive to install, really clearly letting us know of any issues across network at each stage so could easily remedy.
Not at all, we've had no issue with stability.
Absolutely no problems with scaling.
Really highly, we did have an issue with type of license purchased (we accidentally ordered Hyper-V version instead of the one we needed) and the customer service team who resolved it was top notch. We were issued with a temporary full license to cover the period that they took to sort it out so we could continue to use the software. Brilliant.
Technical Support:We have not really needed technical support as we have found it to be really easy and intuitive to install and use. The documentation, when needed, has also been very comprehensive.
This is the first product that we have used to back up VMware ESXi. VM servers so do not have anything to compare against. Having said that, we have no reason to look for an alternative.
It's really easy, if there are any issues with things like firewall/ports that should be open, the software tells you exactly what the problem is and what's needed to fix it. Very impressed with this.
It was all done by our in-house IT team.
The ROI is difficult to calculate but the product has returned our original investment many times, in terms of insuring systems uptime across our business.
The original set-up cost was only the license fee (£636+vat), plus minimal internal IT costs to set up.
We did try Unitrends backup solution but really preferred Veeam’s offering.
My advice would be to go ahead with the implementation as I think it's the best product on market today for VMware ESXi disaster recovery. It really is straightforward to install and use, with some really nice features.
Ease of use, ease of setup, and ease of recovery.
This product is for virtual environments only. Which means it cannot backup physical servers. Most, but not all, software support VMWare and VMWare environments but on the rare occasion (like with us) when a vendor requires a physical machine to operate, it means we have to have a different backup process.
I have used this product for 4 years as my primary backup solution for my VMWare environment.
No. The deployment was very easy and self-explanatory.
One of the great things with this software is that it is designed to do one job: backup virtual machines. It isn’t trying to manage anti-virus, or deploy images, it is strictly a backup process. I have no issues with stability.
As we grew, it handled the workload marvelously. As long as it has enough space to store the backups, it will work without any issues.
Very friendly and very responsive.
Technical Support:I am going to say great, but the truth is, I have never had to use them. They sold me the product 4 years ago, I installed the software, and haven’t had any issues.
Yes. I used the Symantec suite of products. I switched because it became bloated with different items and it tried to manage more things than what I wanted it for.
Very straightforward. You put in your ESX or vCenter information and you are connected and ready to go.
In-house.
The software itself was less expensive than Symantec. But it is kind of hard to put an actual number on it because when you recover a document or a server for someone and it makes you look like a hero, it is priceless.
Management of Veeam is easy. It notifies me everyday of the progress of the backups. The setup costs were normal. Cost of OS, Veeam Software, and shared hardware (virtual environment).
Yes. We also evaluated Barracuda’s cloud product.
I cannot speak highly enough of this product. It has made backup and recovery so much easier. Veeam’s motto of “it just works”, is 100% accurate. It is quite literally a point and click product that doesn’t require special client installs to servers.
It is important that a backup product delivers what it promises. As backup features are important, so are restore features. The ability of Veeam Backup & Replication suite to restore various items in a granular and fast way (RPO & RTO importance) is key for our customers.
Veeam B&R software is transparent and easy to use, which improves usability and manageability for the daily operations a backup/system administrator performs. Setting up a backup application/infrastructure is one thing, but to keep it operational without having to deal with big issues is another. I barely encounter situations where Veeam B&R setup disappoints our customers.
Two months ago, I would have said the integration of Veeam Endpoint Backup with Veeam B&R, but this is covered by now with Veeam 8 U2. The feature that a few customers are waiting is SharePoint item restores via redirected SQL, instead of having to install a staging SQL instance on the Veeam B&R backup server.
I've been installing and configuring it for three and a half years.
Every IT environment has it's specific needs and caveats. Of course I encountered some minor issues when deploying Veeam, but this is mostly related to the IT environment itself. Rare issues are logged with, and solved by Veeam support.
No issues encountered.
No, Veeam B&R provides a flexible way of working and scaling with the breakdown of different functionalities (proxies, repositories etc.).
In all the cases where I had to contact Veeam customer service, a solution was delivered within a short timeframe.

I have experience with Backup Exec. The backup/restore capabilities are far away from the Veeam Suite.
It's straightforward.
We are installing/configuring Veeam in customer environments.
As system integrator we offer various backup/replication products. I have no personal hands-on experience with other products except Backup Exec, and Veeam.
It's important to make a correct design which maps on your IT environment needs. A simple Veeam POC can be setup to validate the product.
The instant recovery and quick boot of the replicas. Ability to boot replicas from a de-duplication storage device (degraded performance).
During a "zero day" virus outbreak that caused several critical systems to fail, the ability to boot and run a "replica" that hadn't been infected yet kept the business running and productive.
Performance of the replica when booting during an emergency. Only a few critical systems can be booted this way due to the loads on secondary storage appliances. This isn't really a problem, more of a limitation of the hardware devices we used for implementation.
I used this product for Virtual Machine replication to a D/R site and also as a secondary backup and recovery over two years.
Deployment went smoothly and without and major sticking points or issues.
Occasionally, we would experience slowness on our network that would cause Veeam to get "out-of-sync" with the replicas. This was easily corrected, but seemed to be overly sensitive to bandwidth and connection speed.
No issues.
Excellent. Very responsive, patient and professional when needed.
Technical Support:Excellent.
No, this was a new build-out where no previous solution had existed.
Very straightforward and intuitive.
We collaborated with a vendor but did 70% of the implementation with internal personal.
Excellent. The savings to lost work time during the virus outbreak alone saved the company work loss time for 150+ employees for two days.
Initial setup was under $3,000.00 including consultants and employee time. Day to day costs are very minimal with simply adding a new VM to one of the replication folders after deployment.
Yes. Backup Exec and Zerto were considered, but Veeam was chosen for better recoveries and easier administration.
Do your research and comparison studies that are specific for your business. Not all products are best for every business, no matter how good they are. Veeam is an excellent option and was ultimately the best choice for our environment.
The ease of use and intuitiveness of the interface are excellent. Ability of the software to work reliably and consistently is very important. The instant restore option to mount backups and read data from them in a matter of seconds/minutes is very helpful. Ability of Veeam to replicate backups cross-site is critical to my DR strategy.
Veeam allowed me to eliminate the need for tape backups and replace legacy backup software. The reliability of Veeam is amazing compared to the solution(s) I was using. I am now able to spend 2 minutes a day reviewing backup logs instead of hours troubleshooting errors and calling vendor support. The ability to replicate backups off-site disk to disk also saves a ton of time compared to swapping tapes and manually moving them off-site.
1 year.
I used a 3rd party consultant to aid in the deployment however after watching it done I was sorry to have paid someone else to do it. The deployment process appeared to be very straightforward.
None.
No.
Excellent customer service. I have mostly dealt with tech support.
Technical Support:Excellent. Always responsive and quick to resolve issues. Though there are rarely issues to resolve.
Yes I previously used Symantec BackupExec which had been in place for years. The product was full of bugs, completely unreliable, and required weekly calls to tech support. I switched to Veeam because of these reasons primarily. The cost of Veeam also came in lower than our previous system.
The initial setup was very straightforward. I was able to follow the implementation guide and get the trial setup very quickly. The GUI is intuitive, I've never had an issue figuring out how to use a feature.
I implemented the production instance through a vendor. The vendor was competent and able to configure Veeam properly. However I do not see the need to use a vendor for future Veeam implementations. The Veeam install and setup process if easy to figure out.
Invaluable in time saved managing backups. The time I spent managing backups, failed jobs, software errors etc has been almost eliminated by Veeam. I have recovered at least 5 hours a week by switching to Veeam.
I do not recall the exact setup costs. I believe I paid the vendor ~$1,500 to implement Veeam, plus the cost of the Veeam licenses and support. Ongoing cost is simply the cost of renewing support and about 5 minutes of my day.
Yes, I evaluated CommVault. Veeam was much better priced for the features we needed.
Veeam is an excellent and reliable VM backup tool at a great value compared to other products. I strongly recommend deploying the free trial to get familiar with the product. After using the trial I would be surprised if someone doesn't purchase Veeam.
I use Veeam ONE in testing environments. I don't use it in the production environment. I only use it for demo and testing tasks.
We have on-prem installations. In Belarus, it's not popular to use cloud features due to government regulations, and our customers use only on-prem environments.
It has been useful for monitoring, troubleshooting, and assessing our environment, as well as for investigating bottlenecks.
Sometimes, it's a little difficult for me to use its user interface. Its scope is very big with a lot of tuning, settings, and so on. If it's difficult for me, it must also be difficult for our customers.
I have been using it since 2020 when I started preparing for the certification examination for Veeam. Now, I don't use it that much. I run Veeam ONE only for demo purposes.
Our environment is stable, and we are not into scaling and sizing our environment. It is very static for us.
I have not used their support for Veeam ONE, but I have used it for Veeam Backup and Replication tasks. I have had communication with Russian support, and they are very fast in communicating with us. They were very good. I would rate them a five out of five.
The initial setup is not so difficult, but other functions and customer settings for monitoring are sometimes difficult. Its initial installation is not difficult for me.
We are an integrator. We have two or three engineers for maintenance activities.
I have not used the resale license in our testing environments. Sometimes, our customers used the trial license for 30 days and so on.
I would advise implementing Veeam Backup and Replication and Veeam ONE together in your environments.
I would rate it an eight out of ten. It is useful for me, but sometimes, it is very difficult to use.
Our primary use case of Backup & Replication is for Linux systems. We are partners of Veeam and I am the CDO.
This is a good solution for the virtual environment; it's easy to use with a simple restore feature.
Unfortunately, the software only runs on Windows and can't take backups of Linux or other operating systems. It would be helpful if it would run on Linux. There are also some issues with support response times.
I've been using this solution for four years.
This is a stable product, it works well.
We haven't yet tried to scale.
The customer service is good although there can be a delay in response times.
The initial setup is straightforward.
In comparison with other solutions, licensing costs are fair although still a little high. Veeam is not as expensive as Commvault or other backups.
Micro Focus Data Protector has the advantage of supporting legacy operating systems like HP-UX or IBM X. Veeam doesn't have that. I prefer Veeam in terms of its VMware.
I highly recommend this solution and rate it nine out of 10.
We have scheduled the backup to be done on our side. At certain intervals, depending on the capability of Veeam, we are doing the replication at a remote site on the same cluster that we use Nutanix as a backup. Basically, we have a Nutanix cluster taking backup of another Nutanix cluster. Outside of this, we are also using Veeam, which is on another machine, or basically another storage.
We have 19 Veeam running on a four-node cluster. Currently, we are using 80% of our RAM capacity and have more CPU and storage available, we still have capacity.
Before using Veeam and HCI, we were performing the functions physically. We used physical machines to run our services. Hardware failure leads to the pillar of our services. Now we have high organization and we can sustain any failure.
We have found the Veeam function very useful because it saves us a lot of storage.
Veeam Backup Replication's snapshotting and cloning are the most valuable features.
I have been using Veeam Backup for a year and a half.
Veeam is a stable solution.
Veeam is scalable. We can add nodes to scale up, it's a scale of architecture.
We receive very good support from Nutanix.
Prior to Veeam we had physical machines that required manual backup.
The initial setup of Veeam is very straightforward. It took one month to get the production. After the initial deployment, we had to migrate our Veeam from physical to virtual so that took another two months.
We received help from the OEM. After set up it is easy to manage ourselves without help from OEM or any system user.
We have seen a return on our investment within two years. Prior to Veeam, we were doing the work physically, which is costly. We had to buy hardware every time we needed a new service to go to production. Now we have the cluster and can immediately deploy a new Veeam and be up and running immediately.
Veeam Backup Replication is a one time subscription for five years.
We evaluated other options from VMware, Cisco Hyper-V and Nutanix.
The cost needs to be considered.
I would rate Veeam Backup Replication an 8 out of 10.
Your one comment about the SQL staging server has now been resolved with the addition of the guest interaction proxy in Version 9
