Flexible and scalable, supports physical systems and VMs, integrates with major applications, and has a free edition
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a flexible, simple, and scalable software-based solution. It has agentless functionality with specific hypervisors and agent-based functionality with specific operating systems. It gives you the flexibility to use your own hardware and back up physical Windows, Linux, IBM AIX, and Oracle Solaris systems as well as VMware VMs, Hyper-V VMs, and Nutanix VMs from one console. It also has integration with major applications that most companies are using, such as Active Directory, SQL, Exchange, or SharePoint. It has integrations, not just for the backup on the image, host layer, or hypervisor, but also for performing an application-consistent backup. It is helpful in backing up to the tape, cloud, DR site, etc. It is really flexible. It is really amazing that you can restore any backup on VMware, Azure, or AWS. As compared to the other solutions in the market. Veeam has really integrated a lot in the past years. It has the best performance and perfect replication."

We should be able to schedule, control, and deploy them from the backup server rather than relying on scripts and/or the system you are backing up to perform the backup. What is most valuable?

It is a flexible, simple, and scalable software-based solution.

It is helpful in backing up to the tape, cloud, DR site, etc. It is really flexible. It is really amazing that you can restore any backup on VMware, Azure, or AWS.

As compared to the other solutions in the market. Veeam has really integrated a lot in the past years. It has the best performance and perfect replication.

What needs improvement?

Veeam Backup Replication has agents for Linux, but they are not supporting Cluster Shared Volumes. It would be great to have agents for Linux be cluster-aware, just like the Windows agents. That's the main pain point.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for the past three years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. We have many users of this solution.

Veeam doesn't focus on a particular segment. Small, medium, and large businesses can use it for backup. Solutions such as Veritas, Commvault, and Rubrik are more focused on the enterprise segment, and they are not really SMB friendly. Veeam has really excelled on that part.

If you are a small business today, you'll grow tomorrow, and Veeam will grow with you. There are certain scenarios where Veeam is not a perfect fit, but for a vast majority of scenarios, Veeam is basically the number one solution in the market, especially now with their new release in which they have a new feature to conduct beautiful backups to Linux repositories.

The main challenge for small and medium businesses has been the investment in backup storage that can provide such features. Most of the solutions that can provide such features are pretty expensive, and they weren't an option for small and medium businesses. Now, they can just install Veeam on a Windows Server, Linux, Ubuntu, and other systems and configure the backups and store the backups on that storage itself.

How are customer service and support?

Their support is perfect for the Veeam Backup Replication for VMware and Hyper-V workload because Veeam started as a backup company for backing up VMware and Hyper-V environments. Now they have agents all over the place. They have lots of products and plug-ins. If you have an issue with a specific item of a pretty new product and the team behind is not so big, you can run into issues in terms of the response time and resolution in a timely fashion.

In certain situations, you need to contact a specific team, but they don't have a unified support model in which you just open a support case, and then they figure out internally which team to assign it to. You have to pick the team to which your issue belongs. So, if your problem is with VMware or Hyper-V backups or restores, you can open a case with the Veeam Backup Replication team. If you have an issue with the Agent for Windows, you need to open a case with the Agent for Windows team. If you have any issue with Nutanix backups, you need to open a case with the respective team. Sometimes, you get into a loop between teams because an issue can be complex and applicable to multiple teams. When a case is going from one team to another team, you get a lot of emails. Other than that, their support is great.

How was the initial setup?

The installation doesn't take much time. It also depends on the customer environment, but installing the software is pretty much "next, next, next", and then you just have to wait for the installation to complete. It relies on your CPU, memory, and disk resources, so the faster your server is, the faster it can happen. Some installations can take one hour, and some installations can take 15 minutes. It really depends on the environment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

They have a free edition that can back up up to 10 VMs or physical servers. Small and medium businesses can use this edition until they can afford to get a license, and after they get a license, they just activate it on the same console. That's the amazing thing about it.

What other advice do I have?

I would definitely recommend this solution to others. It can be deployed on-prem or on the cloud. They also have a new cloud-specific product. They have an agentless backup for Azure Cloud, AWS Cloud, and Google Cloud, but you can still use Veeam Backup Replication on the cloud.

I would rate Veeam Backup & Replication a nine out of ten.

Easy to install with good incremental backup capabilities and works for companies of various sizes
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution can work for companies no matter the size or scope."
  • "They've gone ahead and improved 90% of the tool."
  • "There needs to be more integration with VMware and the virtual machine."
  • "For my client, bandwidth is a problem."

What is our primary use case?

I primarily use the solution for replication, backup, and disaster recovery.

It's basically BaaS, Backup as a Service in in physical and virtual environments,

and DRaaS, Disaster Recovery as a Service. It allows for backups on-premise.

What is most valuable?

The solution allows for incremental backup and incremental reverse. It's very helpful.

Overall, it's a good product. The tool is very important to our organization.

They've gone ahead and improved 90% of the tool. They have the software that we need and we've really enjoyed using them overall.

The solution is easy to install and the programming is pretty basic.

The solution can work for companies no matter the size or scope.

What needs improvement?

In the future, I would like to see the product offer a full backup, virtual machines, and point systems as well as database and application power in the Veeam Backup. There needs to be more integration with VMware and the virtual machine.

For my client, bandwidth is a problem. We do not know the sizing of the environment and it's a problem in every RPO in the time of sizing. This is a big problem.

If the solution could offer a backup for SAN as part of its functionality, that would be a major advantage in comparison to other software companies. It is made for VMware. This is a specialty tool for VMware virtual machines. It would be ideal if it could also be for Veeam and you didn't have to leverage it via VMware.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for about three years at this point.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We handle all sizes of company. It doesn't matter if it is medium, large, or small - including government organizations and banks, which can be quite sizable.

How are customer service and technical support?

I don't have too many tickets with Veeam, however, I do find it hard to communicate with them. They could be better in that sense. I do use them rarely, although I do have an open ticket right now.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm also using CloudConnect, as well.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not overly complex. It's pretty easy to install. For us, the implementation is straightforward, as it is what we do. We handle implementations for a variety of clients.

What about the implementation team?

We handle the implementation ourselves for our clients. We don't need an implementor or consultant to help us.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have looked at other solutions in the past - for example, VMware.

The difference is in licensing. Veeam is licensed via a virtual machine or a physical machine. Other companies have a different setup.

However, VMware is very easy to use in terms of functionality, and the console makes it easier to create jobs from a backup.

What other advice do I have?

We are partners with Veeam.

We have the solution on-premise in our data center. I have platforms in VMware and Hyper-V.

I'd recommend the solution to other organizations. I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this product for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is pretty stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is great. It offers a lot of options from the scalability point of view.

We have many users of this solution. Most of the workers are using this solution for backup.
We use it daily, and we are planning to keep using this solution.

User-friendly and quite stable with a straightforward setup
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup is pretty straightforward."
  • "The solution is extremely user-friendly."
  • "Although the solution offers documentation, it has it only in English, which doesn't help us much in Belarus."
  • "The backup jobs and the scheduled tuning are not as convenient as compared to a solution such as Data Protector."

What is our primary use case?

We use Veeam in our company for demo purposes to present to our clients and our customers. We have some keys in production implementation in the production environment, in our clients' infrastructure.

What is most valuable?

The solution is a very convenient instant crypto machine. It's great for virtual machine recovery, mass storage, data immigration, restoring backups of physical service to mutual environments, et cetera.

Some features of Veeam will work in cloud environments, such as Azure.

The solution is extremely user-friendly.

Overall, the product has proven to be quite stable.

The solution has extensive documentation.

The initial setup is pretty straightforward.

What needs improvement?

I just started working with version 11 in January and I am still looking at the changes. I haven't come across areas of the solution that are lacking just yet. I still need to explore it more.

Although the solution offers documentation, it has it only in English, which doesn't help us much in Belarus. It would be much more helpful if they provided their documentation in multiple languages.

The backup jobs and the scheduled tuning are not as convenient as compared to a solution such as Data Protector. They should work on these aspects to make them more convenient.

Veeam can not do some backup jobs. yOu can only arrange it on a daily basis and no more than that. You can't, for example, do a backup twice in one day, even if you need to.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with the solution for a while. I just started using the latest version in January.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's excellent.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. If a company needs to expand it, it can do so.

How are customer service and technical support?

We've never had to open a ticket for Veeam. I've never dealt with technical support directly. I can't speak to how knowledgable or responsive they are.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Up until two years ago, I worked with Micro Focus Data Protector, version 9.5. It's more for enterprises and has more capabilities for working with tape libraries, replication between the sites, data trends, or working with virtual tape libraries, and so on. It is more expensive, however, in comparison to Veeam.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not overly complex. It's rather straightforward. Specifically, when it comes to small environments, deployment is very easy. You don't have to be overly skilled to do an implementation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't know the exact pricing of the software. I can't speak to its direct costs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I haven't properly evaluated Commvault, however, I've attended webinars on the solution and have a bit of familiarity with it.

What other advice do I have?

I'm an integrator. Our organization is a Gold Partner with Veeam.

Overall, I would rate the solution at an eight out of ten. It's pretty good.

Reliable backup that is easy to install and deploy, with good support
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of this solution is the recuperation of the weaker machines."
  • "It is a very good product; it does what it takes to backup virtual machines, it is easy to set up, and it is very quick."
  • "Pricing can be improved."
  • "Pricing can be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We also provide services to our customers.

We use this solution to backup virtual machines.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of this solution is the recuperation of the weaker machines.

What needs improvement?

Pricing can be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for between six and seven years.

We are using version 11.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We can deploy as many virtual machines as we have in our environment.

We have approximately 25 users in our company.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is good.

How was the initial setup?

Once you know the concept, it is very easy to install and setup.

The deployment time varies on how many machines you have.

In one week, you can have a very good installation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

They could work at providing a better price.

What other advice do I have?

It is a very good product. It does what it takes to backup virtual machines. It is easy to set up and it is very quick.

So far, there isn't anything that I don't like and we are very happy with it.

I would rate Veeam Backup Replication a nine out of ten.

A reliable backup, disaster recovery, and intelligent data management solution
Pros and Cons
  • "Its backup capabilities in general are great."
  • "Its backup capabilities in general are great."
  • "I prefer a software backup solution that allows me to easily define my origin data, including data files, folders, and virtual machines."
  • "I don't really like the proprietary file system or file structure, I always prefer the most simple functionalities where I can define this server, this file, these folders, backing up for this target, etc."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution to backup our files and virtual machines.

We use this solution to backup information for our customers. We back up our customers' servers and store the information on local networks. This way, if something goes wrong, we can easily recover the information from our backups.

We have 40 machines that we backup with this solution.

What is most valuable?

Its backup capabilities in general are great.

What needs improvement?

My problem with backup software is the following: The main advantage that all of this software strives for is the ability to store data on a proprietary file system. When you look at the backup files stored in Veeam and other solutions, you cannot directly see the real files. Instead, you see a file structure where the backups are stored inside. This means if you lose the configuration of your backup machine, you only have files stored in a kind of file system that you just cannot get data from. I prefer backup solutions that allow me to regularly look at my backup files — to see the actual files.

I prefer a software backup solution that allows me to easily define my origin data, including data files, folders, and virtual machines. On the targets, they are stored exactly how they are. If it's a virtual machine file, I can find the virtual machine file stored somewhere. I cannot find my folders in a file structure that I don't understand what's in it. I understand why many backup solutions have this kind of file structure; however, this means I also have to have a full backup of the recovery system of my definition configurations.

I don't really like the proprietary file system or file structure, I always prefer the most simple functionalities where I can define this server, this file, these folders, backing up for this target, etc. I am not a fan of cloud storage for backups. Otherwise, I have to have another backup solution or my SAS backup cloud. In short, I am making backups of backups of backups. For me, that's a nightmare.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for roughly two years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Both the scalability and the stability of Veeam Backup & Replication are good.

How are customer service and technical support?

Normally, I never need to contact technical support. I guess I would need to if I were using Azure cloud storage, but I don't use Azure for storing backups. As I said, I don't trust the cloud for backups.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also use some other solutions, but they are open-source, not commercial solutions. We still use a lot of open-source backup solutions because they actually do what we need. They grab data from one place and they store it where we want without storing it in a special data structure. They store the files exactly as they came from the origin; they go to the target and that's it.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We don't pay for this solution, our customers do.

What other advice do I have?

One thing that I enjoy with some open-source solutions is that they're normally the fastest to implement.

With open source solutions, if I have a server and I need to backup something into a folder, either an internet folder, a shared folder on the local network, or a local storage folder, I do not have to have these folders open on the origin system. I only open these folders at the time of transmitting the files, and then they are closed automatically. This means I do not have these folders open if I don't need them because it's safer that way to prevent ransomware attacks and so on.

As I said, don't trust the cloud. If you use the cloud, be sure to have a backup of the cloud. Testing is much more preferable on-premises. This on-premise location can be the local office of the company where you are doing it from, and also remote offices. Just don't use a cloud where you don't know where the server is.

On-premises, when I say "cloud", I mean the internet. I can have an office in London, and if I want to back up on-premise, I do it on the local storage. I don't use general clouds like Azure. I have a server where I know where it is in some location and I remotely back up into that server. I don't buy storage on clouds. I'm really not a good customer for that. I don't trust them. They're excellent, they are really what people say are the future, but I have experienced too many disruptions on clouds. If I go into a software solution where I have to move the cloud, this obligates me to also have a solution to backup the cloud. I don't want to have these two solutions going from the office to the cloud and then also backing up the cloud — it's a nightmare.

Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give this solution a rating of eight.

  • "They have an integration with MS SQL, and you have to license MS SQL. This is something they need to change."

What is our primary use case?

We use it to guarantee the uptime of our services and servers. We are using its latest version.

What is most valuable?

The peace of mind of the backup is very important. Incremental backups make it fast and easy to use.

We can recover from any failures in case of any hardware failures or malware attacks. We can do a rollback and recover our services with a little downtime. We can rollback even in the case of unsuccessful updates.

They have an integration with MS SQL, and you have to license MS SQL. This is something they need to change. They should go for an open-source database or a free SQL because you're already buying this product, and you shouldn't have to buy another product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for a little over a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. It is just a complaint about MS SQL, but with everything else, it is really scalable. You can just add resources and use what you need. It is really flexible. We have six analysts who use this solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have never used their technical support.

How was the initial setup?

It is fairly easy to set up the solution. The deployment took just a few hours. Generally, two business days would be enough.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise planning your deployments ahead of time and predicting space refinements so that you can set up everything correctly. If you need to change it later, it is a little more complicated.

I would rate Veeam Backup & Replication a nine out of ten.
