It improves performance and addresses issues between the nodes of clusters for private IPs
Pros and Cons
  • "Oracle is valuable for improving performance and addressing issues between the nodes of clusters for private IPs. It provides a private connection between the client and the security cluster."
  • "Oracle is valuable for improving performance and addressing issues between the nodes of clusters for private IPs."

  • "Sometimes when we install something, we need to partition and maybe rebuild the index. This can cause some issues for performance."

What is our primary use case?

Our clients are the maritime projects in Arab countries. They have Oracle 12C and 19C plus Data Guard deployed. We use Oracle for backup and some simple administration tasks, like creating more space to extend or resize the files.

The main purpose is to improve performance and provide high availability for the projects. We install the Oracle cluster between the client and the Data Guard— from the cluster to the nodes and the primary database to the standby database, which is also three nodes.

What is most valuable?

Oracle is valuable for improving performance and addressing issues between the nodes of clusters for private IPs. It provides a private connection between the client and the security cluster.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes when we install something, we need to partition and maybe rebuild the index. This can cause some issues for performance. In the future, I would like to see more stability and fewer bugs.

For how long have I used the solution?

Good solution for databases
Pros and Cons
  • "Initial setup of databases is not a problem."
  • "Initial setup of databases is not a problem."
  • "In general, the systems application needs improvement."
  • "In general, the systems application needs improvement."

What is our primary use case?

I move databases to the public and private cloud.

My company has a big project to move all databases into the cloud and construct new sited in OCI. We have four to six huge databases amounting to 100 terabytes to move in OCI.

What is most valuable?

We specifically use the Oracle data guards because of the site disaster recovery. We have situations, one database has all the transactions all the time, while the other is positioned 6 hours ago. We have spent six hours to apply the transactions into the other database.

What needs improvement?

We have a lot of challenges with OCI because we need to build functions in the application. In my data center, if we have problems we change it in the cloud so part of the applications changes making it very complicated.

In our system, we have some private dates and we need to use cryptography data, however, some of the cities are very old and we need to build all the social functions in the system, again making it very complicated to put all the information into the database.

In general, the systems application needs improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with OCI for four years.

How was the initial setup?

The complexity of the initial setup depends on the solution in the system. In our case, it was not very complicated because I used the new technology of excavators and I put all my databases into this solution. With the features, the security, and others. The initial setup is not a problem for databases.

What about the implementation team?

We used some partners to help with the deployment. They are high level technicians that specialize in the service.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Registry an 8 out of 10.

Stable data center with endless resources
Pros and Cons

  • "It isn't easy to get qualified people who know how to work on this tool."

What is our primary use case?

I am an IT infrastructure manager for an aerospace engineering company in Saudi Arabia. This solution is where we host our data center.

What is most valuable?

The main benefit is that you're getting all of the resources you require on a subscription basis. You get to pay as you go instead of having to have a CAPEX, you convert your CAPEX to OPEX to cover the data center cost.

What needs improvement?

It isn't easy to get qualified people who know how to work on this tool. All my administrators are learning as they go. Since this is the only cloud solution provider in Saudi Arabia, and it has only been around for one year, I am sure that this will change with time.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously were using an on-premise data center.

How was the initial setup?

I would rate the setup a medium in terms of difficulty as there is some level of training required.

There are not six to eight people maintaining the tool.

What about the implementation team?

We utilized a partner team of OCI to do the initial setup and configuration. It took about one month to complete.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is an annual and a subscription option.

What other advice do I have?

This solution is a bit more complex than other options, and there are not as many qualified engineers, administrators, etc. out there. It may take you some time to find qualified people to work on it for you, or you will need to train your own people to work on it.

I would rate this an eight out of ten.

Seamless deployment, good documentation, but support for integrating with non-Oracle solutions is unclear
Pros and Cons
  • "Oracle does well when it comes to data privacy and security, which are critical."
  • "Oracle does well when it comes to data privacy and security, which are critical."
  • "Specific to the Oracle Cloud; while they have been able to showcase inbuilt features for Oracle applications, what doesn't really come across clearly is what happens when you want to host, work with, or integrate with applications outside of the Oracle stack."
  • "The roadmap from Oracle is quite unclear."

What is our primary use case?

We have been using it for HR use cases, typically in two spaces. One is analytics, and the other involves the Oracle digital assistant that is hosted on the Oracle Cloud. It involves a set of conversational layers for HR use cases. Typically, the use cases are for payroll, employee absence, and performance.

What is most valuable?

The Oracle Cloud integrates well with other applications from the Oracle stack.

There is a lot of documentation available.

Oracle does well when it comes to data privacy and security, which are critical.

What needs improvement?

Specific to the Oracle Cloud; while they have been able to showcase inbuilt features for Oracle applications, what doesn't really come across clearly is what happens when you want to host, work with, or integrate with applications outside of the Oracle stack.

They do an okay job of releasing use cases within the stack, but I would like to see more features released outside of the stack.

The roadmap from Oracle is quite unclear.

Technical support from Oracle needs to be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the Oracle Cloud Platform for approximately 12 months.

We have been using this product but not very much to this point. It's pretty much nascent but we've now started ramping it up.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Since our deployment, it has been fairly stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is absolutely scalable, as long as they can provide integrations to external stacks. We have fewer than 2,000 users with varied roles in the organization.

How are customer service and support?

Not necessarily as an Oracle Cloud user, but as a general Oracle user, the technical support definitely has room for improvement.

Our experience has been that the response time is poor, escalations are the norm, and things are tossed around without a direct response. I'm not sure where the issue is but that's the general experience.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is pretty straightforward. Deploying it was seamless and it has been a good experience. End to end, it took us approximately three weeks to deploy.

What about the implementation team?

Our implementation was a combined effort. We used an integrator as well as a consultant. The consultant knew more about the product.

What other advice do I have?

The biggest lesson that I have learned from working with Oracle Cloud is that using other applications from the Oracle stack works well. It's a linear job to finish. However, if you are trying to integrate with Salesforce, for example, there are quite a few unknowns for which you don't really have any reference. You're primarily running it by trial and error rather than knowing what that involves. There is a lot of documentation and information available when dealing with the Oracle stack, but the rest of it seems to be a little hazy.

From the limited experience that we have with this product, I would rate it a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A stable, powerful database but needs more high availability areas in Africa
Pros and Cons
  • "They seem to be more readily integrating with Azure, which is great."
  • "Oracle is a more powerful database than Azure or AWS."
  • "The initial setup can be a bit complex."
  • "In the market, they are still not the best, however, they are working on it."

What is our primary use case?

I'm mainly focused on autonomous databases.

What is most valuable?

Oracle is a more powerful database than Azure or AWS.

Recently, they have been offering free certificates, which is a good way to distribute their solutions and to showcase their cloud services.

They seem to be more readily integrating with Azure, which is great.

So far, I have found the solution to be stable.

What needs improvement?

In the market, they are still not the best, however, they are working on it. They want to be more popular than AWS or Azure, which dominate right now.

The initial setup can be a bit complex.

They need to build up their DevOps.

They need to increase their high availability regions. They need more data centers in Africa. It risks services when high availability isn't available.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've only really used the solution for four months. I've just begun to focus on it in the last three weeks.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is good. They have very good SLAs.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

While the scalability is good, only two or three have high availability domains. This is something they need to work on.

We have 15 users who are using Oracle in our organization.

Recently, we started work on a project with HPC, high-performance computing. We'll be using this on the cloud. However, we may use AWS for this as they are a bit more powerful still.

How are customer service and support?

In terms of support, sometimes we open some cases if we find any issue, however, everything is stable and working well. We are satisfied with their level of service.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously worked with Excel databases.

I'm also familiar with AWS and Azure.

AWS was based on high-performance computing and their infrastructure is more powerful than Oracle infrastructure.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup can get complex. The network aspects are still a little bit complex, however, their cloud services are pretty straightforward.

The deployment times vary. It depends on the type of system we are deploying. It takes two to three days to deploy typically.

We have two or three people that can handle any maintenance tasks.

What was our ROI?

While we haven't seen an ROI yet, that I know of, we likely will see some sort of ROI in the future.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

They have an OpEx model that is pay-as-you-go.

We have a yearly contract subscription.

What other advice do I have?

I'm just a customer and an end-user.

We are using the most recent version of the solution.

If anyone is curious to learn more about Oracle, they have opened all of their courses on Oracle University for free. Those interested in adopting the solution should take advantage, and learn as much as they can about Oracle before they go ahead and deploy any services.

I'd rate the solution at a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

Good availability with low implementation costs but needs better scripting methodology
Pros and Cons
  • "The pricing isn't too bad."
  • "The solution has improved our organization's implementation and running costs; it's saved us money already, in just a few short months."
  • "The solution could always be less expensive."
  • "The solution needs to improve the creation process for server fonts and the usability and scripting methodology."

What is our primary use case?

We have an application and run this application on this Infrastructure element. That's our primary use case for this product.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution has improved our organization's implementation and running costs. It's saved us money already, in just a few short months.

What is most valuable?

We plan to use the solution to service our databases.

The solution's availability is quite good.

The implementation costs are quite low. The pricing isn't too bad.

What needs improvement?

The solution needs to improve the creation process for server fonts and the usability and scripting methodology. There's a lot of room for improvement so far.

Technical support is pretty good, however, it could be improved upon.

The solution could always be less expensive.

If the product could add HSM services to the infrastructure service, that could make it better.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the solution for about six months at this point. It hasn't been a year yet. It's still relatively new.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

If we're just speaking about the database, it's a very stable solution. In terms of the cloud aspect, we are still at the very beginning. It's still quite new to us as a product. We will see when we have relevant experience with real operational statistics. Therefore, it's difficult to make a statement on stability in general. I don't have enough information.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We don't have the relevant experience yet to really discuss scalability. It's not something that we have attempted yet, with the product still being so new to us. We need more time to really figure that part out.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support has been pretty good so far. I'd give them a rating of eight out of ten. We're mostly satisfied with the service they've provided. They are knowledgeable and responsive. That said, it could be slightly improved.

How was the initial setup?

While the installation was relatively easy, there is some complexity involved when you get into the scripting methodology. To create at least 10 or 40 databases with the same scripting is not really easy.

The deployment took around two or so weeks.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In terms of pricing, as far as I've heard from my colleagues and the management, it is an acceptable price. However, they would still be interested in a cheaper solution.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

If they did attempt to evaluate another solution, at the time, I was not at the company. Since I have been around, they have only been interested in the Oracle solution.

What other advice do I have?

We are a reseller partner.

In general, I would rate the solution at a seven out of ten. We're mostly happy with the solution, however, there are aspects that can be improved upon.

I would recommend this product to companies who are really familiar with the earlier version of Oracle databases.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Eases the deployment of Oracle Linux server instances and provides good database performance
Pros and Cons
  • "I like having the ability to easily run Oracle Linux server instances and to deploy Oracle Middleware and WebLogic servers. Oracle's Infrastructure as a Service products are also very useful, and we're using those right now within Oracle OCI."
  • "Especially when it comes to the Database as a Service, which we use a lot, I can easily vouch for that if you are looking for good database performance."
  • "I think that there could be a more user-friendly environment when it comes to the options that Oracle presents through the Oracle Cloud Platform."
  • "I think that there could be a more user-friendly environment when it comes to the options that Oracle presents through the Oracle Cloud Platform."

What is our primary use case?

Right now we're using two cloud platforms, one being Oracle Cloud Platform and the other Microsoft Azure. We've been using Oracle Cloud Platform since 2018 and Azure since 2015.

We use Oracle Cloud Platform with the OCI Infrastructure as a Service offerings, and we're essentially using it for the compute instances and nothing else. We have deployed some servers running Oracle Linux which are being used as our main development environment. Then, we also have servers for our UAT (User Acceptance Testing) environment. Neither of these use cases are for production environments, and they are only used for development and testing.

To access Oracle Cloud Platform, we have a VPN site-to-site connection from our site to Oracle Cloud. We don't have the FastConnect option because we don't have a very good reason to use it.

As for users, we typically have around 20 people who are connected to the Oracle environment and who do their work on it. Regarding maintenance, we have three people on technical staff for that, who are DBAs and architects.

How has it helped my organization?

It hasn't improved our organization in a direct, or highly visible, way because we only use it for development and testing. However, I enjoy the ease with which we are able to deploy Oracle Linux server instances and other Oracle products.

What is most valuable?

I like having the ability to easily run Oracle Linux server instances and to deploy Oracle Middleware and WebLogic servers. Oracle's Infrastructure as a Service products are also very useful, and we're using those right now within Oracle OCI.

What needs improvement?

I think that there could be a more user-friendly environment when it comes to the options that Oracle presents through the Oracle Cloud Platform.

Also, when you compare it to Microsoft Azure Marketplace, there aren't as many options to choose from, and some features are not available in some operating systems. In particular, I'd like to see more readily-available features such as Fusion Middleware as a service, in the same way that they have WebLogic as a service within OCI.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Cloud Platform for the last three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's very stable, especially when it comes to accessing the Oracle Cloud Platform through VPN.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's very scalable and we haven't had any issues in that regard.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have not previously used a similar solution to Oracle Cloud Platform. We started with Oracle Cloud Platform because we were already using Oracle products and we decided that deploying Oracle products on Oracle Cloud Platform would be a more sensible idea than deploying on other cloud solutions.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was very straightforward and it only took one to two days for the initial deployment.

What about the implementation team?

We used Oracle consultants through Oracle's ACS, along with three technical personnel including DBAs and architects.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

On a monthly basis, we pay around $2,500 for licensing fees, with no additional costs. We do pay extra licensing for other on-premises solutions, but these are not related to Oracle Cloud Platform.

What other advice do I have?

We're not using that many products within Oracle Cloud Platform, but nevertheless I can recommend it. Especially when it comes to the Database as a Service, which we use a lot. I can easily vouch for that if you are looking for good database performance.

In addition, if any companies or clients are currently using Oracle Database on-premises, I can certainly recommend that they migrate to Oracle Cloud Database.

I would rate Oracle Cloud Platform an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Scale Up Dependent Applications & Optimize Quickly

  • "With the Oracle Cloud Platform, they have to give first some proper documentation with a step-by-step process; nowadays, the Oracle Cloud Platform requires lots of floor work."

What is our primary use case?

We are using the LAN2 as well as the Oracle Cloud Platform. We running the Gen-2 which is called the OC2. We have a global company working with more than 185 employees.

We have customers around the globe and our company is located in 17 international locations. We needed solutions which could be good for our customers as well as our service applications.

We have decided to test the Oracle Cloud Platform. After the testing, we found that it was good for our use case. Thereafter, we have adopted it.

The POC for Oracle Cloud Platform is done. After POC, we have tested with various applications and found it is optimizing us with less time, so that's why we are using it.

How has it helped my organization?

Apart from the licensing, there's support from Oracle Cloud Platform which improved our day to day operations. Time is reduced. Based on this service, we are able to scale up dependent applications as quickly as we can.

There are many other various features of the Oracle Cloud Platform that we have used. It is very good for us in our business organization.

What is most valuable?

Oracle is an enterprise database technology. We have used Oracle products in our database department. That is why most of our testing was in regards to the database department.

What needs improvement?

With the Oracle Cloud Platform, they have to give first some proper documentation with a step-by-step process. Then the customer is able to use it properly.

Nowadays, the Oracle Cloud Platform requires lots of floor work. Things are level in the market and the Oracle naming conversion is something to make a difference between cloud providers.

Those hands-on sessions with Oracle Cloud Platform will be enough, i.e. for product improvement, hands-on sessions can be arranged.

Automation is something else that Oracle can do to improve the service. Apart from that, if you can arrange some hands-on sessions with Oracle to preview OCP, it would be good.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of OCP is great, it will scale. The solution is excellent. The only caveat is that you have to understand how to properly use it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of OCP is very good, more than 7,000 people are using it as of now. They are all in different roles. Other OCP applications, we are using mainly for reporting.

After the training for the deployment, there were 3 people who were taking care of all the core construction. Apart from the OCP side, we have another network expert.

We are planning to increase our usage of OCP. We have adopted e-licensing for the cloud environment. Now we are planning for the next stage of development of services.

How are customer service and technical support?

Most of the customer support was done from the Oracle side. Then we did it from our end also. This was good and they also did well. The technical support is okay.

Customer service representatives respond to your ticket whenever you have issues with the Oracle Cloud Platform. They respond on time.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have evaluated AWS. We have evaluated Microsoft Azure as well, but not for this purpose.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of the Oracle Cloud Platform is complex with some programming languages, domains, and the networking that we have to do. i.e. uploading our databases, etc.

Those all provide a little bit of a challenge on the Oracle Cloud Platform that we have to understand, and also as per the compliance rules. Then we chose it.

For the setup overall, it was taking not more than 40 days. Then for the next 3 months after implementation, we have done the same for the client sites and service applications.

The final implementation of OCP was not taking more than 20 days. All of our deployment is ready and everyone is able to use it with integration for all our systems.

What about the implementation team?

One consultant that we used was for the DV training. We have gone with a consultancy with them and they guided us in the proper way to get training.

That was very awesome and we understood the concepts for the cloud differences between AWS, Google Cloud, & OCP, as well as conducted one fitness evaluation for our introduction.

Implementation proceeded the way they described it and everything was very good.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

OCP is good, not too expensive. Based on the need you can say that there are other good options for people who can go with less time and other approaches to the services.

Both pricing and licensing are affordable with the Oracle Cloud Platform.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have tested with AWS, we tested with Google, but due to the limitation of AWS, we are not able to host our applications. We are not able to use the rack.

The AWS billing figures were not up to our requirements. That's why we have decided to go with Oracle instead of any other competitor.

What other advice do I have?

If people are looking for a cloud solution I recommend Oracle, but there is one thing which is very challenging to us: with Oracle, there are many options packages.

You can get extreme performance and other things, but it's really costly and that needs to be paid extra for on the plan.

Overall, I give Oracle Cloud Platform an 8/10. Because our consultant showed us how to use Oracle for our service, that was very beneficial.

From the team I come from for my product support also I can say 8/10 for OCP.
