It is a backup solution. We use it for small file restores.

Good deduplication feature, but the speed of large restores is rather slow
Pros and Cons
- "One of the things that I do like about it is that it has a very good deduplication feature."
- "The speed of restores should be improved. We have found the speed of large restores rather slow."
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
We don't always have volume shadow copy enabled on various products. If someone deletes a file, this is what we use to restore the file.
What is most valuable?
One of the things that I do like about it is that it has a very good deduplication feature.
What needs improvement?
The speed of restores should be improved. We have found the speed of large restores rather slow.
It should also back up Office 365 mailboxes. It would be nice to be able to restore PST files. It might already be there in version 8, which is a new version, but I haven't looked at it.

For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for five or six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It has been very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is fine. As long as you have storage and licenses, you can throw it out to as many virtual servers or physical servers as you have.
In terms of its users, it is really just me. They call me when they have deleted a file.
How are customer service and support?
They're decent.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We hadn't used a previous solution. We tend to use Arcserve backup and the UDP together. So, we had nothing like UDP.
How was the initial setup?
It was pretty straightforward. It wasn't bad.
What about the implementation team?
We are the consultants who implement it. In terms of staff required for deployment and maintenance, it is really a nice one-person solution.
What was our ROI?
We just give people their files back.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The retail fee is $1300 for a year for one server. Other than that, there is just the cost of your hardware.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We didn't really evaluate other solutions. We were an Arcserve shop at the time.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise others to do large test restores and see if that's going to do it because we have had trouble with doing a restore of large amounts of data, and it takes too long.
I would rate it a seven out of 10. It is good.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Private Cloud

What other advice do I have?
I rate the product a ten out of ten.

Speedy backup features, fast technical support and good ROI
Pros and Cons
- "The ROI is very good because of the speed of the backup."
- "The initial setup was complex."
What is our primary use case?
Our customers use Arcserve UDP for backup and recovery. Our customers are schools, universities, banks, finance and insurance sectors.
What needs improvement?
Customers do not like when there is a price increase, but it is understandable as everything in the economy is getting more expensive. Customers eventually get comfortable with the increased price and stop complaining.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using this solution for three years and are using the latest version. We provide a license link to our partner, and the partner gives it to the customers to install.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable. We have not heard any issues or complaints from customers installing it.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is great and better than the competitors. In addition, it takes just a few hours to install.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support is great. When there is an issue, we open a ticket, and the technical support from Singapore or Arcserve directly deals with the problem. The technical support is very fast. I rate the technical support a ten out of ten.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was complex, but with the help of our IT and engineering staff, it was quite straightforward. Compared to other solutions, the setup of Arcserve UDP is fast. Someone new to the solution can take tutorials and training.

Quick backups, highly reliable, and fast setup
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature of StorageCraft ShadowProtect is the speed and the compression of the backups. The compressed backed-up files do not take up as much storage. Additionally, the incremental backups can be done in one minute and be backed up on a disc very fast."
- "StorageCraft ShadowProtect can improve by making one console that can control backups of all desktops and servers in one place. Additionally, the recovery process of the backups is very slow and could improve. It's very slow when we went to recover a complete disc but to recover one file is very fast."
What is our primary use case?
I am using StorageCraft ShadowProtect on servers and desktop computers.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of StorageCraft ShadowProtect is the speed and the compression of the backups. The compressed backed-up files do not take up as much storage. Additionally, the incremental backups can be done in one minute and be backed up on a disc very fast.
What needs improvement?
StorageCraft ShadowProtect can improve by making one console that can control backups of all desktops and servers in one place. Additionally, the recovery process of the backups is very slow and could improve. It's very slow when we went to recover a complete disc but to recover one file is very fast.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using StorageCraft ShadowProtect for approximately seven years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of StorageCraft ShadowProtect is good.
We are using the solution on a daily basis.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
StorageCraft ShadowProtect is scalable, it can be expanded.
For larger enterprises, Veeam or Nakivo is best because of the centralized console.
How are customer service and support?
We have not had issues that we needed to contact support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have previously used Nakivo and Veeam backup solutions. The main differences between StorageCraft ShadowProtect and the other two are in StorageCraft ShadowProtect we do not have a centralized console for backups of desktops, servers, or virtual servers.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of StorageCraft ShadowProtect is simple and can be done in five minutes.
I rate the setup of StorageCraft ShadowProtect a five out of five.
What about the implementation team?
We did the implementation of the StorageCraft ShadowProtect in-house.
The solution does not require a lot of maintenance, but we have two people that can do the maintenance. We update it approximately twice annually.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The price of StorageCraft ShadowProtect is competitive in the market.
What other advice do I have?
I recommend StorageCraft ShadowProtect to others because it's a very fast backup solution, quick one-file recovery, and the price is reasonable. However, for people who need backup servers and desktops, there is not a central console, it has to be done separately.
I rate StorageCraft ShadowProtect a nine out of ten.

Backs up pretty much everything that we've got, but needs a more intuitive interface and more integrations
Pros and Cons
- "The standard backup and restore feature is most used."
- "Its interface can be improved. I find it unintuitive."
What is our primary use case?
We use it to back up pretty much everything that we've got in our system. We've got a 13-terabyte license. We back up HyperV servers, files, and SQL. You name it, and we pretty much back it up.
What is most valuable?
The standard backup and restore feature is most used.
What needs improvement?
Its interface can be improved. I find it unintuitive.
It could have some integrations. It doesn't have some of the integration and some of the monitoring features that I would normally utilize. Some of the solutions have got integrations with different storage and things like that.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've had ArcServe for as long as I can remember.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is overall rock-solid. It does what it says it is going to do, and it does it well.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We're pretty small. We've been able to scale it out for what we needed to do with it. We could do multiple sites when we needed to.
We have only one backup guy who uses this solution. I pop in once in a while if he is not available and restore something, but overall, it is a one-man show.
It covers all our bases in the entire organization, and we aren't planning on expanding any further.
How are customer service and support?
I have not dealt with them, but I know that the person handling the backups has not been super happy with the technical support on that side.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I don't recall using anything else prior to it.
How was the initial setup?
It was pretty straightforward. We've had it for a long time. It was set up a long time ago, and it has been migrated over the years. The person handling the backups has spent quite a few months fine-tuning it.
What about the implementation team?
The person handling the backups did it pretty much on his own. He also takes care of its maintenance.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Its price seems reasonable. Its price is average as compared to the other products I've looked at.
We have a three-year license right now. There are no other costs beyond the standard licensing fee.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise making sure that you have your strategy planned.
I would rate it a seven out of 10. It is a good, solid product, but it doesn't do anything special. It just does what it is told.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Responsive technical support, plenty of backup options, and scalable
Pros and Cons
- "There are many backup options available in this solution. For example, you are able to do backups of servers, email, OST files, and users. This is a complete backup solution which is very good."
- "The solution can use a lot of bandwidth when the scheduling is not done, it should auto-schedule itself. For example, if there are 50 users connected in the network at 12 o'clock and the backup is not scheduled. At this time the network offices are going to have performance issues when it is doing a backup. Having a feature to auto-schedule a time when the network is not being used often would be beneficial."
What is our primary use case?
We have many servers at our branch head office that are on our premises. A few of those servers and many other user systems are completely being backed up by Arcserve UDP. Approximately 75% of the backups are handled by Arcserve UDP.
What is most valuable?
There are many backup options available in this solution. For example, you are able to do backups of servers, email, OST files, and users. This is a complete backup solution which is very good.
What needs improvement?
The solution can use a lot of bandwidth when the scheduling is not done, it should auto-schedule itself. At this time the network offices are going to have performance issues when it is doing a backup. Having a feature to auto-schedule a time when the network is not being used often would be beneficial.
The solution has a deduplication feature but while sending the data over the network it is not utilizing this feature. This could be improved in the future.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution within the last 12 months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Approximately two years ago in the previous version of the solution, it was not stable. However, in the new releases, it is quite stable and we have increased the user count from 100 to 250.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable, we have 250 users using the solution.
How are customer service and technical support?
The customer support has been responsive to the issues we were facing, such as bandwidth usage. They have been very good and helpful to our needs.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was not complex and was straightforward.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There is an annual license required for this solution and it is priced well.
