Fast restore performance, priced well, and helps us to recover from accidental changes
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is that I can back up the whole machine and then restore it relatively fast."
  • "When you want to restore files, you first need to restore the machine, and then you have to mount it, and then restore the files."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Veeam for SQL and file server backups.

How has it helped my organization?

This product helps because when something has changed that we didn't know about or didn't want to be modified, and we find out about it the following day, we can go back to exactly where we were and when it worked perfectly.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is that I can back up the whole machine and then restore it relatively fast. The restore can be done in a few minutes.

What needs improvement?

When you want to restore files, you first need to restore the machine, and then you have to mount it, and then restore the files. I wish it were like Symantec, where I can search for a file and it will give me the latest version, no matter where it is. It could be on tape or on disk, and it still restores the latest version.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for between five and six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veeam has 100% stability and I have had no problems with it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have not needed to rely on scalability, although it can scale relatively easily. It is only a matter of licensing. The applicability to different sizes of organizations depends on the use cases.

How are customer service and support?

I haven't had any issues with technical support. I'm using a third-party for support and it is working well. In addition, Veeam checks in with me once a year to ask how things are and see if there is anything that needs to be improved.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of this product is very good. In fact, this is why we acquired it in the first place. It was relatively cheap and also good.

What other advice do I have?

I do not use the entire package with all of the features. However, there is nothing I need that isn't in the product. My advice for anybody who is considering Veeam is that for a small or medium-sized business, it is enough. However, for a larger organization, I would suggest Commvault.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Has simplified administration, simple installation, and a simple interface
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup for a simple environment is very easy. We just do next, next, next, next for the installation. It can be complicated in a complicated environment. It can be simple for a simple environment. I enjoy installing it. It has a lot of features."
  • "I have a problem with the VM. When we started doing a backup, it takes a snapshot for our virtual machines, but when we try it two or three times, in some cases, our virtual machines go to a consolidated state. I don't know why this problem happens. But I still think Veeam is a top-ranking solution."

What is our primary use case?

In most cases, we use Veeam Backup Replication for backup and recovery. In some literal cases, we use it for replication and statics.

What needs improvement?

I have a problem with the VM. When we started doing a backup, it takes a snapshot for our virtual machines, but when we try it two or three times, in some cases, our virtual machines go to a consolidated state. I don't know why this problem happens. But I still think Veeam is a top-ranking solution.

I don't know why this VM problem happens. Sometimes, I think it's because of our environments and performance. I have a little bit of a performance problem when VMs back up. I don't think it's optimized in our environment because of that.

It doesn't have any reporting in it. The reporting and GUI interface can be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam for three to four years.

How are customer service and technical support?

We don't have support in my country because of sanctions.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for a simple environment is very easy. We just do next, next, next, next for the installation. It can be complicated in a complicated environment. It can be simple for a simple environment. I enjoy installing it. It has a lot of features.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's very expensive.

What other advice do I have?

It's important that the IT staff had training for VMs. There are many webinars and training courses. My staff doesn't think there is much of a need for training. They just do next, next, next.

I would rate Veeam Backup Replication an eight out of ten. It's the best. It has simplified administration, simple installation, and a simple interface.

I would recommend Veeam Backup Replication. It's good for our virtualization environments.

We needed to switch to Veeam because almost all our systems are virtualized and this was not the focus for our previous solution.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature for my organization is the ability to perform replications to a DR site with minimal impact to our bandwidth and production environment. On some systems we run near constant backups and replications on a 24/7 basis.

How has it helped my organization?

This product has significantly reduced our backup windows as backup times have been significantly reduced, as well as the speed at which we can recover systems if needed.

What needs improvement?

There are some features that are lacking compared to other backup solutions, specifically around the use of tape libraries, and this is the largest area for improvement. As it is a fairly new feature, I do fully expect improvement in the future as they continue to refine the ability to backup servers to tape media.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have had the entire Veeam Backup and Recovery Suite in production for 18 months. Over that time we have continued to transfer more and more jobs from a legacy system to this solution.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We only experienced minor issues with deployment mainly related to permission issue, as we strive to keep account permissions to a minimum. As far as the actual install of the application, and even upgrades, we have had no issues related to either. When we did experience issues, the support was outstanding.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have had no issues with stability of the Veeam software since the initial deployment. Any minor issues that we have experienced did not affect the ability to perform backups, and they were resolved quickly by support.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

To date, this system has been able to scale to all our needs without any noticeable issues. This has been a strength of this solution in the eyes of management since the initial purchase.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

The customer service has been outstanding. We typically use a reseller for most purchases, including the Veeam Backup solution, and when needed the sales team has been available for questions or concerns.

Technical Support:

The technical support has been phenomenal for this product. All issues we have experienced have been resolved in less than 72 hours. We have not experienced any critical issues, but I would anticipate that they would be resolved in far less time.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used a backup solution from another vendor which was not as focused on the virtual environment. As almost all our systems are virtualized the switch to Veeam made sense as its primary focus is a virtual environment.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was fairly straightforward. No issues should be seen if the recommendations in the documentation is followed in regards to server setup and account permissions.

What about the implementation team?

This was deployed through an in-house team with assistance from Veeam support when needed.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

$30,000 was the initial investment for purchase and setup, and it has minimal day to day costs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did a minimal evaluation of other products as Veeam has been one of the top-rated backup solutions for virtual environments. The field of vendors specializing in virtual environment backups has been limited compared to standard backup solutions which made review of possible solutions much easier as well.

What other advice do I have?

When looking at purchasing this product, I would recommend that you purchase the full suite, which includes Veeam One for monitoring of the environment. The products complement each other and can help ease burdens of administering both the virtual environment and data backup.

Easy to operate and restore
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a stable and scalable solution that's easy to operate and restore."
  • "Could be improved with hybrid cloud integration backup."

What is our primary use case?

It's used for all of our virtual environment backups. We use it in all kinds of IT, with over 3000 employees.

What is most valuable?

I like that it's easy to operate and restore.

What needs improvement?

For additional features, I'd say having integration backup through hybrid cloud.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the solution for more than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

If we need support, we call the Veeam branch office in our country.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup is straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

It was deployed by the reseller.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have a yearly license.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We were approached by Commvault and Veritas solution vendors, but for now, Veeam is good enough.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Maintenance is done with the SI (System Integrator).

Very user friendly with a straightforward implementation
Pros and Cons
  • "This is very user-friendly."
  • "Lacks online training."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for backup. Our company is a customer of Veeam and I'm the assistant manager and provide risk advisory services.

What is most valuable?

This is a user-friendly solution and I'm very comfortable with it.

What needs improvement?

I'd like to see better training offered online.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward and our deployment was done in-house. We have three people using the solution.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend this solution and rate it nine out of 10.

I can really trust the virtual machine backup

What is our primary use case?

We replicate data between servers on our site and we back up to external media, which we take offsite.

How has it helped my organization?

It really helps secure our data.

What is most valuable?

It does a pretty good job of what we ask it to. What I find most valuable is probably the virtual machine backup. I can really trust those copies.

What needs improvement?

Their licensing model could use some improvement. In the version we're using, they license per core and up to six cores, so you can't use the one for small business anymore. You have to upgrade to the enterprise carry-on, it's a bit ridiculous.

I'd like to see more flexible licensing or to be consumed as a service.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for five years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is very scalable. Just my only issue is from a licensing perspective. If you want to add more servers, they push you up into a much more expensive licensing tier. Technically it's very scalable; financially, it's not that scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The product is so good that I haven't had to call support.

What was our ROI?

In the global scheme of things, it's pretty inexpensive software as far as what we spend per year. If you factor in hardware and all sorts of other things, it's probably a good value for your money.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are no additional costs other than the standard licensing fee per year. It's pretty straightforward.

What other advice do I have?

i give this solution a nine out of ten. I think it's a good product for small to medium businesses. It serves our needs. Unless your needs are very particular, it probably covers most use cases.

Responsive technical support, straightforward installation, and reliable
Pros and Cons
  • "My customers find the backup and recovery ease of use is the most beneficial feature."
  • "The recovery and integration features of Veeam Backup Replication could improve. For example, all VM integration could improve, such as with Hyper-V and VMware."

What is our primary use case?

Veeam Backup Replication is used by my clients as a backup and recovery solution.

What is most valuable?

My customers find the backup and recovery ease of use is the most beneficial feature.

What needs improvement?

The recovery and integration features of Veeam Backup Replication could improve. For example, all VM integration could improve, such as with Hyper-V and VMware.

There is not any kind of archiving feature that is provided and in a future release, there should be an archiving feature in this platform. They would be better able to compete with the other archiving solution. In the current scenario, if the customer wants to have an archiving feature, they will have to purchase another solution because we cannot have this archiving feature with Veeam Backup Replication.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup Replication for approximately five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veeam Backup Replication has been stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of Veeam Backup Replication is good.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is good and responsive.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used Commvault.

How was the initial setup?

The initial installation is quite easy and not very cumbersome. It's easy if you have a basic understanding of the architecture of the Veeam.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The subscription-based pricing of Veeam Backup Replication is competitive.

What other advice do I have?

The solution that we recommend more often depends on the use case. If there are other use cases that include bare metal recovery and archiving features then I would recommend another product, such as Commvault.

I would advise before implementing a solution such as Veeam Backup Replication that you have the training and skillset before implementation. This allows for proper implementation, best practices, and stability. It is helpful to have someone that is certified.

I rate Veeam Backup Replication an eight out of ten.

We have been using it in small environments, and it is stable, straightforward to deploy, and scalable for our needs
Pros and Cons
  • "The backup and replication features are most valuable."
  • "I would like them to move back to host licensing."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for backup and replication in small environments.

How has it helped my organization?

It has not improved anything. It is just a backup solution. Our customers needed something for disaster recovery in case something bad happens. It is something they needed, and it is something they have got.

What is most valuable?

The backup and replication features are most valuable.

What needs improvement?

I would like them to move back to host licensing.

Everything should improve over time as new functionalities come along. The product needs to follow new technologies and integrate them.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for about 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable. It is almost fire-and-forget.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We don't have experience with large environments. We only have small environments with a host of virtual machines. It is scalable for our use. There is no problem.

Its users are system administrators. Any increase in its usage would depend on the pricing. Veeam has changed its licensing policy. With their universal licensing, things have become a bit expensive. It is a free market, so we'll see.

How are customer service and support?

It should be good, but we have not used it.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also use other products. This is not the only one. We use Micro Focus Data Protector, Arcserve UDP, and Microsoft Data Protection Manager.

Microsoft Data Protection Manager is more windows-oriented. It is not as good as Veeam for sure, but it is good enough for certain environments.

How was the initial setup?

It was quite straightforward. We are using it in relatively small environments. These are not big installations.

It took a few hours. The deployment is quick, but you have to test everything and make sure everything works.

What about the implementation team?

We are an integrator. For its deployment and maintenance, one system administrator is enough.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We try to use perpetual licensing, and there are no additional costs.

They have recently moved to universal licensing, which is more expensive, and I would like them to go back to host licensing.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others to decide for themselves if it checks all the boxes.

I would rate it an eight out of 10 because it is now more expensive with universal licensing.
