Performance of the replica when booting during an emergency could be better. Veeam is an excellent option.

What is most valuable?

The instant recovery and quick boot of the replicas. Ability to boot replicas from a de-duplication storage device (degraded performance).

How has it helped my organization?

During a "zero day" virus outbreak that caused several critical systems to fail, the ability to boot and run a "replica" that hadn't been infected yet kept the business running and productive.

What needs improvement?

Performance of the replica when booting during an emergency. Only a few critical systems can be booted this way due to the loads on secondary storage appliances. This isn't really a problem, more of a limitation of the hardware devices we used for implementation.

For how long have I used the solution?

I used this product for Virtual Machine replication to a D/R site and also as a secondary backup and recovery over two years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Deployment went smoothly and without and major sticking points or issues.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Occasionally, we would experience slowness on our network that would cause Veeam to get "out-of-sync" with the replicas. This was easily corrected, but seemed to be overly sensitive to bandwidth and connection speed.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues.

How are customer service and support?

Customer Service:

Excellent. Very responsive, patient and professional when needed.

Technical Support:

Excellent.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No, this was a new build-out where no previous solution had existed.

How was the initial setup?

Very straightforward and intuitive.

What about the implementation team?

We collaborated with a vendor but did 70% of the implementation with internal personal.

What was our ROI?

Excellent. The savings to lost work time during the virus outbreak alone saved the company work loss time for 150+ employees for two days.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Initial setup was under $3,000.00 including consultants and employee time. Day to day costs are very minimal with simply adding a new VM to one of the replication folders after deployment.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes. Backup Exec and Zerto were considered, but Veeam was chosen for better recoveries and easier administration.

What other advice do I have?

Do your research and comparison studies that are specific for your business. Not all products are best for every business, no matter how good they are. Veeam is an excellent option and was ultimately the best choice for our environment.

Definitely when using a Dedupe appliance performance is lacking as we have this issue with a Data Domain prior to upgrading it. It is still slow but manageable. As noted always research options.

Useful for restoring and scheduling jobs; very user-friendly and efficient
Pros and Cons
  • "A quick-working solution that is very user friendly."
  • "The solution needs more detailed reporting."

What is our primary use case?

The solution provides backup for my virtual infrastructure. We are customers of Veeam and I'm an IT manager.

What is most valuable?

The interface is user-friendly and the solution works quickly. It's also quite helpful for restoring. If there's an instance where I don't need to restore, I can easily copy-paste and that is a useful feature. It's simple to schedule jobs on Veeam and get whatever details you need, it really fulfills all our requirements.

What needs improvement?

It's sometimes difficult identifying the resources for backup and I think that could be improved. I'd also like to see more detailed reporting.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for almost four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

We haven't really needed to contact customer service.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used a different solution and switched to Veeam because it works faster, the recovery process is very quick, and it's easily scalable.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup wasn't too easy or too difficult. We had an integrator who helped us and it was a seamless process. Deployment took less than a day but integrating and customizing took some time, not only because of Veeam but as a result of the process involved in migrating from the previous solution. We have one person dealing with maintenance. We're using Veeam on 10 servers.

What was our ROI?

We have been using this product for the past three to four years now, and we have well and truly recovered the cost of implementing it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing costs are reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution eight out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Simple and easy to use and manage
Pros and Cons
  • "One of the most valuable features is the simplicity of the solution's administration."
  • "While the Veeam Backup Replication tool can mostly back up all the data in the environment, the AIX from IBM backup capabilities nowadays could stand improvement as they are not featured on a single pane of glass."

What is our primary use case?

We are familiar with all the versions. As resellers we can sell any version of the solution.

Our use cases involve  Veeam or Hyper V infrastructure. They concern physical servers, Office 365, complete solution specs, a mold self, the Como workloads and Oracle SAP.

What is most valuable?

One of the most valuable features is the simplicity of the solution's administration. I like its rental capabilities, as well as the backup data, replication abilities, in respect of the current Veeam or the backup servers to the Cloud provider. Disaster recovery is also simple and very easy to manage.

What needs improvement?

While the Veeam Backup Replication tool can mostly back up all the data in the environment, the AIX from IBM backup capabilities nowadays could stand improvement as they are not featured on a single pane of glass. A consultation is required for its administration. As such, the integration of AIX would be welcome.

While Veeam Backup & Replication is a complete solution, it would be nice to have the Veeam server on Linux. The availability of the Server Manager only on Windows installation should be addressed.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for around two or three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable and allows for ease of use.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very scalable. Once the license is attended to, there is not much need to concern oneself with new implementations or changes to the installation process. As such the solution is scalable, stable and very friendly to use.

How are customer service and technical support?

I rate the technical support as a ten out of ten. Veeam boasts a wide documentation forum in which most issues can be resolved. When there is a need to engage their support services, we have found them to be straightforward and very quick to resolve the issue.

How was the initial setup?

Taking into account the setups and boss configurations, the deployment takes from two to three days and is very simple to do. With the right partner it can be accomplished pretty quickly and simply.

What about the implementation team?

Deployment and maintenance involves two or three people. It is quite easy.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated ARC server and Capizec. We are a reseller and implementation company, so we handle both of these aspects as concerns the software of many different back up tools, but Veeam lags far behind the competition. The others use WAN and are our first choice.

In comparison with Veeam Backup & Replication, the license form and attendant specs of the competitors make things quite easy.

What other advice do I have?

I truly like the solution. It is easy, fast and reliable when it comes to growth.

While our parent company has the solution on-premises, we also sell it as a service, as we are Veeam partners.

We have a variety of client types and sizes.

Top-notch replication and reporting
Pros and Cons
  • "The replication feature has proven to be the most valuable feature for us."
  • "Sometimes Veeam is not that effective when it comes to legacy environments."

What is our primary use case?

We use Veeam to back up our customer's processes. We use it to save and store data and to replicate it from one site to another for data replication and disaster recovery.

In total, about 30 employees use this solution.

What is most valuable?

The replication feature has proven to be the most valuable feature for us.

The backup feature is good, but the replication as a technology at the time we chose Veeam was really effective.

Also, this solution is extremely user-friendly. They recently added a new reporting feature which has been really good.

What needs improvement?

Overall, it's a great technology; it's a great product. But Veeam has always been dedicated to the virtual environment — mostly the Intel virtual environment. In our market, the Italian market, there are many companies that have legacy environments that need to be backed up, and sometimes Veeam is not that effective when it comes to legacy environments.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veeam Backup & Replication is very stable and reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We installed it on-prem according to our customer's specifications. I would say it's a good product with fine scalability. I've never tried it in a very large environment, so I can't speak for large enterprises; however, I do know that some large companies use it.

How are customer service and technical support?

The customer service is good and reliable.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We resell perpetual licenses. We sell monthly licenses, too. Although the pricing could always be better, I'd say it's fair — it's not overpriced.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam Backup & Replication is a great product for a virtual environment — it's really effective.

From a technical point of view, it's very effective — I think they're doing great. Year after year, they announce many new features; they are definitely keeping up to date with the times. Many of their competitors have also released some sort of hardware as a repository together with their software. Still, I think that Veeam will stay software-only, which is fine. I think they're doing good.

Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give Veeam Backup & Replication a rating of eight.

Easy to set up with good features but file copy jobs result in errors
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup was very easy."
  • "I only ever found one error. It was when we were doing a file copy job. After using it for ten minutes, it would slow down and cause a bottleneck error."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily used the solution for backups and replication.

What is most valuable?

For the most part, all of the features are very good.

The initial setup was very easy.

What needs improvement?

I only ever found one error. It was when we were doing a file copy job. After using it for ten minutes, it would slow down and cause a bottleneck error.

It would be ideal if the product can reduce the number of errors we received.

For how long have I used the solution?

I had been using the solution for about six months or so. It hadn't been that long.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We do seem to get many errors, especially during file copies.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Not too many people are using the solution. It was basically just myself and my colleague, and we were using it in order to evaluate it. It hasn't been used widely yet.

How are customer service and technical support?

I've never used technical support. I cannot speak to how helpful or responsive they are, having never spoken with them directly. I wouldn't be able to evaluate their services.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before working with this solution, I did not use any other similar products. In the past, I simply used a bit of HP products for certain tasks.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex or too complicated. It's very easy and quite straightforward. A company shouldn't have any issues with the process.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is only one license that you can purchase. My colleague was handling the licensing details. I was looking at it more from a technical perspective and therefore can't speak to the pricing or licensing agreements that are possible.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We were basically evaluating Veritas and Veeam. We've just been evaluating both of them.

What other advice do I have?

I used the solution at my previous company. Currently, our organization is considering Veeam and Veritas and we are evaluating both to see which would be best for our company.

I would advise other users to not do file copy jobs from Veeam. It's best to just use it for replication purposes.

I'd rate the solution at a seven out of ten overall.

Offers a strong performance and a high level of compatibility with other applications
Pros and Cons
  • "Strong performance with a high level of compatibility."
  • "Device backup could be improved."

What is most valuable?

The solution offers a strong performance, higher than Acronis. It has a high level of compatibility with the majority of applications such as Nutanix and others.

What needs improvement?

The backup of the device could be improved and it's also quite an expensive solution, more expensive than Acronis.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for five years.

How are customer service and technical support?

Veeam provides decent customer service.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I've used HiQ and Quest NetVault, and like them both.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution a nine out of 10.

Easy to set up, supports file and image-level restore, and offers on-the-fly migration
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup was very easy."
  • "If a single file is corrupt then the restoration of the entire backup will fail."

What is our primary use case?

We use Veeam to back up our virtual machines, software, and data.

We also use it to replicate data that is on the cloud, outside of the company.

What is most valuable?

It is very easy to restore files and images.

It supports migration on the fly.

What needs improvement?

If a single file is corrupt then the restoration of the entire backup will fail. This type of dependency is a problem.

I would like to see some customized backup functions that allow the end-users to make copies of files.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Veeam Backup & Replication for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veeam is a stable solution and we haven't had any problems with it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not needed to scale yet, but if required, I think that it is scalable.

We have one group who is using it. Our end-users do not run backups themselves.

How are customer service and technical support?

This product is supported well.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are happy with the pricing and we pay for licensing on a subscription basis.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Commvault as a backup solution but settled on Veeam.

What other advice do I have?

For users who are interested in folder backup, I recommend Veeam.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

The WAN accelerator feature has been the most valuable for me. We evaluated many tools, but this was clearly better.
Pros and Cons
  • "The WAN accelerator feature has been the most valuable for me. That feature reduced the time needed to complete the task from 25 days to less than a week! This is compared with the original tools used: ntbackup, robocopy and Windows Server Backup."
  • "Some support replies for a broken backup task have been "rebuild the job from scratch" and this is a bad thing to do if you have many VMs and repositories."

How has it helped my organization?

Before Veeam our customer used to backup data with obsolete tools and had no central console management, so every site had single task to be checked everyday. Now, he receives the full backup report as an email attachment everyday.

What is most valuable?

The WAN accelerator feature has been the most valuable for me. My customer was in trouble because he found a huge quantity of data to be moved from foreign countries sites to the HQ in Milan. That feature reduced the time needed to complete the task from 25 days to less than a week! This is compared with the original tools used: ntbackup, robocopy and Windows Server Backup.

What needs improvement?

I think user support can be more analytic. Some support replies for a broken backup task have been "rebuild the job from scratch" and this is a bad thing to do if you have many VMs and repositories.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

During a WAN copy we found an issue that if the connection drops and the program reaches the retry limit, sometimes this damages of the backup chain. Strangely, the program runs the day after but it looses the retention points number. For instance, if I set up a 30 day retention point, instead of deleting the oldest file and merging the new one, it keeps going on till the repository is full.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I did not encounter any issue with scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

I would rate support 7/10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used many other tools: Acronis, vSphere Data Protection, Symantec BES. I moved to Veeam because I initially found many high level features missing in the other tools. Now the gap is thinned, but I feel more confident with Veeam.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup has not been simple due to the complexity of the customer's infrastructure and the number of features to be aware of. Veeam initially can be complex. If you want to enable all the modules, you must know how Veeam organizes its console and where to find a feature.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I think the price is good when you choose the Essentials Suite, but when you buy a full featured version (for instance the Enterprise Plus) the price is a little bit expensive. This is typical when a company becomes an industry leader.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Veritas Backup Exec, Acronis and many others, but Veeam was clearly better. That is the reason why we switched.

What other advice do I have?

If you have a complex environment, first study well how Veeam works. Having some days of training before is better than loosing some weeks after to rebuild the logical structure and jobs many times.
