Supports backup reliability and remote management while integrating smoothly into local and cloud workflows
Pros and Cons
  • "This server was priced more cheaply than other options such as IBM and HP, making it quite cost-effective."
  • "The services of Dell are good, and the performance of Dell PowerEdge R-Series is also good; I didn't face any problems, and the issues I did encounter were resolved by their excellent support services, even though they're based overseas."
  • "Regarding improvements, due to the cloud area and cloud platform, the on-premises server, Dell PowerEdge R-Series, might become less prominent. However, it won't disappear, as the cloud platform will remain the primary concern."
  • "For storage, I find that Dell PowerEdge R-Series is not useful."

What is our primary use case?

My role in using and managing Dell PowerEdge R-Series is focused on Veeam backup for local storage. The Veeam application is installed on this server, which is the primary use case where I utilize it as a backup server.

Currently, I am using a Dell PowerEdge R-Series server solely as a backup server to manage growing data, including a large amount of metadata that we also back up and transfer to the cloud for another repository.

What is most valuable?

I appreciate the iDRAC management for Dell PowerEdge R-Series, as it is a nice management tool that I'm using frequently.

Everyone in my organization believes Dell PowerEdge R-Series will play some role in AI initiatives in the future. Currently, we are discussing the potential of Dell PowerEdge R-Series for AI initiatives step by step.

In my company, we have a developer department that develops programs for our products. The management and CRM systems we are developing will be supported by AI.

What needs improvement?

For storage, I find that Dell PowerEdge R-Series is not useful. Regarding improvements, due to the cloud area and cloud platform, the on-premises server, Dell PowerEdge R-Series, might become less prominent. However, it won't disappear, as the cloud platform will remain the primary concern.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have utilized Dell PowerEdge R-Series for about five to six years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The services of Dell are good, and the performance of Dell PowerEdge R-Series is also good. I didn't face any problems, and the issues I did encounter were resolved by their excellent support services, even though they're based overseas.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I may plan to scale the usage of Dell PowerEdge R-Series in the future.

How are customer service and support?

If I were to rate Dell support on a scale of one to ten, I would give it an eight.

I would not rate it a ten as I sometimes struggle with communication while speaking with support representatives in English. I believe it would be beneficial if Dell opened a support branch in Israel to support Hebrew language.

How was the initial setup?

I didn't face any challenges with deployment.

What was our ROI?

I've seen a return on my investment into Dell PowerEdge R-Series as it's still working.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This server was priced more cheaply than other options such as IBM and HP, making it quite cost-effective.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have looked at IBM and HP and understand the pricing differences. Although price was not the primary reason I chose Dell PowerEdge R-Series over competitors, a recommendation from a colleague influenced my decision.

What other advice do I have?

For anyone looking at Dell PowerEdge R-Series, I recommend ensuring to have lots of memory and high-speed SSD disks when purchasing their server.

I rate Dell PowerEdge R-Series an eight out of ten. I didn't face any main problems with my server, and the few issues I encountered were resolved through support.

Reliable servers have saved time on office workloads and have supported long-term investments
Pros and Cons
  • "Dell PowerEdge R-Series improves my organization mainly as a time saver and in terms of reliability, so we know we have equipment that is reliable."

What is our primary use case?

The main use cases for us are office applications, office servers, and messaging. On Dell PowerEdge R-Series for the office services, it is mainly storage.

    What is most valuable?

What distinguishes Dell PowerEdge R-Series servers for me compared to others is the robustness and the longevity. The features I find most useful and that I like the most are the fast server restarts. Few failures save time; we gain time. Dell PowerEdge R-Series improves my organization mainly as a time saver and in terms of reliability, so we know we have equipment that is reliable. We are not afraid to refresh the ranges by going with the same thing again, but we know we are on hardware that is reliable, so we go for it with our eyes closed.

    What needs improvement?

I think the power consumption part could be improved if we want to develop the Green IT aspect.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerEdge R-Series servers for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We look at the server downtime rate to measure the success of Dell PowerEdge R-Series. The server downtime rate is almost zero; we have almost no failures. We also analyze CPU consumption depending on what is running, to see if we are using a lot of RAM. I have had no problems.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell PowerEdge R-Series adapts well to our organization's growth. We can add servers; it is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I have not used technical support at any point, but some colleagues have.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I did not consider another solution before choosing Dell.

    How was the initial setup?

I would describe the server deployment experience as very easy. Once it is racked and the network connections are plugged in, it starts up by itself; almost nothing needs to be done.

    What was our ROI?

We can see a return on investment in general because we keep the servers for at least five years. Between five and eight years, we have a return on investment practically every time.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Dell is a long-standing partner with whom we have good relations, and we know the hardware is reliable. For the moment, for certain workloads, they are not put in competition. For others, they are. The price and the licenses work for us.

What other advice do I have?

We are just starting AI initiatives in our organization now. For the moment, Dell PowerEdge R-Series does not play a role in that because we are not at the infrastructure stage. We are more in the thinking stage about what use cases we can develop, and for now, the hardware part is not taken into account. There is the possibility of going with that on Dell PowerEdge R-Series. I would rate this product a 9.

Centralized virtualization has simplified administration and has ensured consistent uptime
    Pros and Cons
    • "I chose Dell PowerEdge R-Series because of the ease of administration, the simplicity, and the continuity of administration over the years."
    • "The only growth complexity with Dell PowerEdge R-Series is that the cost of adding memory after the first purchase is always high."

What is our primary use case?

My main use case is virtualization servers running VMware. I use it to host all the business applications and the servers needed to run the group's ERPs.

    What is most valuable?

My favorite feature is the iDRAC features, particularly iDRAC administration for everything related to updating the server's internal firmware. I prefer iDRAC because after that, I mainly install VMware ESXi, so I have access to all the useful information about the server in there. For now, I'm not using a centralized PowerEdge console server, but I know it exists. I don't need it at my level.

    What needs improvement?

Dell PowerEdge R-Series servers could be improved in certain aspects. Lately, I really appreciated the tools that explain how to replace parts inside the servers, the detailed server documentation, the upgrade aids, and the auto-upgrade of the server.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerEdge R-Series for thirteen years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I confirm significant stability, reliability, and durability.

We had just one problem a few years ago, due to a type of Dell PowerEdge R-Series we bought with integrated SD cards that were no longer compatible with how VMware works. I don't think it was a Dell PowerEdge R-Series issue, but a VMware-on-SD-card issue.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The only growth complexity with Dell PowerEdge R-Series is that the cost of adding memory after the first purchase is always high. It's better to size properly from the start than to add memory afterwards.

How are customer service and support?

I have had to use technical support. On a scale of one to ten I would rate it an eight, it went well. They stepped in when needed and provided great service.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I considered another solution fifteen years ago.

    How was the initial setup?

I can describe the system deployment experience as very simple since we always deploy the same types of servers with the same types of virtualization environments. Once we've configured iDRAC, we just have to install the VMware operating system and then we can quickly use the server in the existing cluster.

    What was our ROI?

I can say that I have seen a return on investment from having Dell PowerEdge R-Series since the administration is always the same and therefore simple. It saves us the time employees would spend learning new machines.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My impressions of the price and the cost of licenses are that the price is good, but I don't challenge them much with other solutions because I'm happy with the solution and therefore they're not being challenged at the moment.
The only growth complexity with Dell PowerEdge R-Series is that the cost of adding memory after the first purchase is always high. It's better to size properly from the start than to add memory afterwards.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I chose Dell PowerEdge R-Series because of the ease of administration, the simplicity, and the continuity of administration over the years. My teams master the subject and there's no need to relearn something new.

What other advice do I have?

I have been working in my field for twenty years. I have integrated them and might need them if something breaks. I don't have performance metrics that tell me and allow me to measure the success of Dell PowerEdge R-Series for me because I'm fully on Dell PowerEdge R-Series, so I don't have a comparison with other hardware. It hasn't been necessary to put metrics in place. The measure of success with Dell PowerEdge R-Series for me is the uptime of the servers, the fact that they don't go down. My overall rating for this product is eight.

Reliable servers have reduced downtime and supported our AI workloads and operational flexibility
    Pros and Cons
    • "Dell PowerEdge R-Series has absolutely enhanced the overall flexibility of our operations and business without a doubt."

What is our primary use case?

Dell PowerEdge R-Series serves as the main platform to run our internal activities, including internal applications, and to run services for our external clients as well. This was more about managing the team. Currently, we are utilizing the servers for AI purposes, and we procured approximately 60 R670 servers for AI purposes.

How has it helped my organization?

Dell PowerEdge R-Series has helped me reduce unplanned production downtime, as there is no downtime. We have premium support from Dell, so in the event of an issue, they are very quick to get it resolved.

Dell PowerEdge R-Series has absolutely enhanced the overall flexibility of our operations and business without a doubt.

      What is most valuable?

The benefits I have seen from running AI workloads on Dell PowerEdge R-Series include a reduction in our in-person time when we shifted operations to AI on the PowerEdge.

The servers have helped reduce the total cost of ownership because there are fewer failures and no downtime. Time is money, and if a breakdown happens, someone has to go on-site, we have to pay for that, and all the associated costs. This has been significantly reduced.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerEdge R-Series for around 11 to 12 years now.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate the customer service and tech support for Dell PowerEdge R-Series as 10 out of 10 without any doubt because we have a dedicated account team and a dedicated power storage team. Whenever an issue happens, they are just available without any doubt.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to adopting Dell PowerEdge R-Series, we were using Oracle servers, which we have upgraded and replaced with Dell.

What other advice do I have?

My role in using and managing Dell PowerEdge R-Series involves technical inspection and the evaluation process until the date of buying and installing it into the data center.

Dell PowerEdge R-Series has developed significantly from the R640 to the R670. The speed has increased substantially, the functionality has increased, and the capabilities have increased. When I compare the R640 that we procured in 2016 versus the R670 now, it has been a flexible upgrade. The size of the product has been reduced, making it very easy to rack and stack in the cabinet. Overall, things have improved significantly.

I would rate this review as 10 out of 10.

Remote management has reduced downtime and simplifies daily virtualization operations
      Pros and Cons
      • "From my point of view, the biggest return on investment when using this product is the reliability and low downtime that I have had with them, the ease of management, and automation."

What is our primary use case?

My role in using or managing Dell PowerEdge R-Series is procurement and then management of the server itself. My main use cases on a day-to-day basis are hypervisors, so they host our VMware environment.

        What is most valuable?

I have appreciated the easy iDRAC management solution of Dell PowerEdge R-Series, including doing firmware updates through that interface and being able to manage it remotely without having to go into the KVM and doing it manually.

The iDRAC feature benefits the company at the end of the day as it allows me to manage it remotely, and if there are any issues or anything I need to troubleshoot, I do not have to run into the office; I can do it from home, so I do not have to worry about it going down and taking an extra 30 minutes to resolve an issue.

Using Dell PowerEdge R-Series servers has helped reduce unplanned production downtime at my company. I am not exactly sure by how much, but it saves us the trip, so it cuts down on going back and forth. Additionally, I feel that they are very reliable, so we do not have many occurrences of downtime at all.

        What needs improvement?

I cannot think of any improvements for Dell PowerEdge R-Series; honestly, they are doing great and are on the bleeding edge of everything that I am trying to do or deal with. I do not know what could be worked on further since the interface is great, their automation is great, and I really cannot think of improvements.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerEdge R-Series for three or four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I do not believe I have ever had to reach out for customer service and technical support from Dell, but I have never heard anything bad from other coworkers who have used them, so I think they would be more than helpful and great.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Using Dell PowerEdge R-Series servers has not affected the overall flexibility of my operations or business; they are about the same as other servers.

How are customer service and support?

I do not believe I have ever had to reach out for customer service and technical support from Dell, but I have never heard anything bad from other coworkers who have used them, so I think they would be more than helpful and great.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to adopting Dell PowerEdge R-Series, I was using the HPE ProLiant series for my ESXi hosts, and we noticed the price difference between Dell and HPE. There is really no huge resource difference, so we just wanted to go with the Dells and found they had many more features and niceties to them, so we are happy with the swap.

        How was the initial setup?

I think the pricing, the setup cost, and the licensing of the solution are all fair. As I mentioned, they are more competitive than HPE, and the iDRAC solution comes with the server, whereas with HPE, their iLO solution was an extra license on top of that, so I did not have to worry about purchasing an extra license.

        What about the implementation team?

If they can make it cheaper, I would love that, but cheaper is always better.

        What was our ROI?

From my point of view, the biggest return on investment when using this product is the reliability and low downtime that I have had with them, the ease of management, and automation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Using Dell PowerEdge R-Series servers has helped reduce my total cost of ownership. I do not know by how much, but they were competitively priced against HPE solutions, and that is why we chose to go with the Dell ones.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I am not considering right now or did I ever consider switching to another solution after getting Dell PowerEdge R-Series. I actually just purchased a couple more Dell servers before coming to this review, so I received a discount code to help with it.

What other advice do I have?

Dell iDRAC and their features of certificate management on them are really helpful using Acme, whereas the HPEs did not have as much bleeding edge technology to manage and automate. My review rating for this product is ten out of ten.

Adopting a new hardware platform has supported financial goals and enabled exploration of alternative support models
        Pros and Cons
        • "The Intel processor handles my workloads well; it is just Intel, and it just works."
        • "Where it would take an hour to set up an HPE server, for example, it took almost two working days for the first Dell PowerEdge to get it running."

What is our primary use case?

Dell PowerEdge R-Series is used for edge services in our company. We are testing whether Dell PowerEdge is on par with HPE, because we have been using HPE for more than 20 years, and it has been serving us very well. However, we still have doubts about some Dell aspects, particularly support. We are using a few Dell PowerEdges in the field to test if it is working and if it is mature. If it is not mature, then we will need to switch back to HPE. We are running two servers in a Citrix platform together with eight HPE servers to see if the performance is on par, if it is working as expected, and what the administrative overhead for the system engineers is. It is another platform that works in another way, so there is a learning curve, but I wonder if the end user notices anything. From my standpoint, I also consider the financial aspect of it.

        What is most valuable?

Not really have I appreciated any feature about Dell PowerEdge R-Series so far because we are running a hypervisor on it, making it just a server in a rack. However, iDRAC is nice, although HPE iLO is better.

In terms of the interface, HPE is cleaner. Dell is more like a website, requiring us to search everywhere to find a feature to turn on or off, and sometimes it is hard to know where it is set. Of course, that is based on experience, as we are experienced with HPE, but HPE's management interface and their website are cleaner than Dell's. Dell has too much bloatware, too many settings, and it varies with updates, but overall, it is okay, just another way of working.

I have realized benefits so far from running Dell PowerEdges just from a financial standpoint.

The Intel processor handles my workloads well. It is just Intel, and it just works.

        What needs improvement?

Dell PowerEdge could be better by having a cleaner interface, especially for iDRAC, as well as improving the support website of Dell in general, making it easier to find firmware and drivers. This is feedback I am getting from my engineers, as they find it difficult to locate settings or download items. It needs to be easier and cleaner.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Dell PowerEdges for almost two or three years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

So far, the stability and reliability of Dell PowerEdges is good, but we are only running it for almost three years now, so I cannot tell over the long term.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability question depends on the outcomes of our experiment, making it not applicable at this time.

How are customer service and support?

We have utilized Dell support to help us, but of course, it takes time for them to start analyzing and determining the cause of the issue. Support is fine. We used to believe it was better, but that is what we are experimenting with. We are not only looking at cost but also support.

I cannot tell you the exact rating for their support; I would have to ask my engineers, but it would be around a six or seven.

What is lacking for me to make it a ten in terms of support is having a clear support system. Reachability should be better, with native-speaking Dutch engineers available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week instead of being transferred to India, for example.

How would you rate customer service and support?

        Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Of course, I considered HP ProLiant before deciding on Dell PowerEdge.

We are only running HPE, specifically HPE Incorporated and HPE Enterprise, not Lenovo.

        How was the initial setup?

It is difficult because it is new and looks different from what we are used to. That is the problem. When something is not working as expected, finding documentation becomes an issue. Where it would take an hour to set up an HPE server, for example, it took almost two working days for the first Dell PowerEdge to get it running.

        What about the implementation team?

I have not deployed Dell PowerEdges myself, but for my engineers, it is difficult.

        What was our ROI?

The ROI from purchasing Dell PowerEdges versus HP or any other vendors is close, although it really depends on what the account manager is doing and whether they want an extra customer or not.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing was nice, otherwise it would not be Dell, so I am only looking at pricing.

It is a little bit cheaper than HP, although that depends on the sales process. Sometimes HPE wants to do more than Dell, which makes it interesting from a financial perspective. From an operational perspective, it is just equipment.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Not specifically do I think Dell PowerEdge has features that cater to the needs of my company. It is just another hardware vendor. I see it with more transparency because you can have IBM, Lenovo, or HPE, but they all include an Intel chip, and they all include chips from NVIDIA. For me, it is just equipment, and whether it is Lenovo, Dell, or HPE does not matter much. The support behind the equipment is more important, and financially it is just comparing HPE versus Dell versus Lenovo.

What other advice do I have?

I do not know at this time what model or functionality of servers or rack servers are being used.

I think it is the R model, specifically R660 or something similar, and I think they were invested last year.

I do not have any other differentiators to mention about the benefits of HP versus Dell solutions, as we are only running Dell PowerEdge and ProLiant.

My overall review rating for Dell PowerEdge R-Series is eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

        On-premises

Has supported seamless growth and dependable infrastructure for long-term business success
        Pros and Cons
        • "Dell PowerEdge R-Series supports the growth and operational success of my company in an amazing way, as we had several meetings with Dell representatives who came to our office, understood our forecast, and helped us build infrastructure that would support our goal."

What is our primary use case?

My primary use cases for Dell PowerEdge R-Series in my company mostly focus on production use, for all the servers and systems inside the company environment. I prefer not to go into details, but we have Active Directory concepts, databases, SQL, and similar systems running on them.

Dell PowerEdge R-Series does not yet play a role in my company's AI initiatives.

          What is most valuable?

Dell PowerEdge R-Series supports the growth and operational success of my company in an amazing way. We had several meetings with Dell PowerEdge R-Series representatives who came to our office, understood our forecast, and managed to help us build infrastructure that would support our goal.

Since then, we have definitely scaled up as we purchased several more servers.

          What needs improvement?

I need to think about in what areas Dell PowerEdge R-Series could be better and what additional features I would want to see included in the next releases.

I have no suggestions about room for improvement regarding Dell PowerEdge R-Series. Everything is fine with Dell PowerEdge R-Series; we enjoy it. It's a server, and I don't have any current pain points or features that I would want to see. We simply enjoy it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have almost 20 years of experience working in my current field. I have been using Dell PowerEdge R-Series for almost all my professional years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I can say that Dell PowerEdge R-Series is a reliable and stable solution for me, and if any issues arise, they know how to solve them.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have definitely scaled up as we purchased several more servers since our initial deployment.

How are customer service and support?

On a scale of one to 10, I would give their support a rating of 10. I don't remember a situation where I was furious as I've been with other vendors, so they are better than others.

How would you rate customer service and support?

          Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have evaluated other vendors before choosing Dell PowerEdge R-Series, but I started as a junior with Dell PowerEdge R-Series, and as a senior, I continue doing good. Dell PowerEdge R-Series has proven itself as a reliable solution, and the service is great; you don't want to take a risk with something else.

          How was the initial setup?

The setup cost for Dell PowerEdge R-Series was fair enough.

          What was our ROI?

I have definitely realized a return on my investment in Dell PowerEdge R-Series, as even old machines are still working as robust systems. We can use them in the DR or at least in the laboratory environment as a second generation.

What other advice do I have?

I am the IT Manager managing Dell PowerEdge R-Series. With VMware and Veeam, they worked perfectly and smoothly for backups. When we had accidents and situations that required restoration, it worked perfectly and the service was fine.

As I'm in a security company and most of the systems are on-prem, we're trying to migrate most of the systems to something that will collaborate between systems, and the next step we will start to implement AI. I want AI to help with basic tasks, including helping developers, procurement, inventory, and regular day-to-day operations.

The performance metrics I use to measure success with Dell PowerEdge R-Series include the service as one of the first things, the salesperson, and all the surrounding aspects. The server itself is similar to HP and other vendors, but when you have a problem and the service is better than fine, this is a win-win situation.

My advice to someone evaluating Dell PowerEdge R-Series is that cost is not always the most important factor; sometimes you need to consider other benefits when buying a product. We can speak with potential customers if Dell PowerEdge R-Series wants our recommendation. Dell can be in touch with me if they have any questions.

On a scale of one to 10, I would rate Dell PowerEdge R-Series solutions between 9 and 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Harness reliable performance while seeking enhanced support
          Pros and Cons
          • "The main benefits we receive from Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers are stability and reliability."
          • "Dell's support is an area that needs improvement as their product reliability is good, but the support is not as strong as HP's."

What is our primary use case?

Our use case mainly involves running our exchange server 2019 on the SimpliVity, along with other healthcare-related servers that are also on HP, including the domain controller. We are moving away from HP because of their support issues and solutions.

          What is most valuable?

The most valuable function we found in Hyper-Converged is the application version we are currently using, which is HP SimpliVity version 4.1.0.266, although we are not fully satisfied with it. We have been using Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers without issues. We occasionally replace one or two servers, but the majority are still functioning well. We've relied on Dell's EqualLogic storage for over ten years, receiving many alerts but overall having a perfectly functioning setup in the back end.

          What needs improvement?

Dell's support is an area that needs improvement as their product reliability is good, but the support is not as strong as HP's. I suggest that Dell should include a built-in backup solution in VxRail, similar to what we find in Sangfor, where the backup feature is integrated.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been working with HP Hyper-Converged for around five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have never faced unplanned downtime with Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

After HP SimpliVity, the hyper-converged solution, we are not using any more HP servers. We are working with Nutanix and Sangfor, and previously we also worked with Dell. Initially, these servers were with Dell, but we moved them to HP SimpliVity after the hardware expired. Our reason for this shift was based on a technical and financial comparison, as we got a better price from HP.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Dell's pricing has been high for us, which led us to move to SimpliVity.

What other advice do I have?

We are still working with Nutanix products, and we also moved to another vendor called Sangfor. We are using HP SimpliVity as our hyper-converged solution, but we are not satisfied with their services and support. We have 24 nodes of HP SimpliVity, and this year we decide not to renew the contract as we plan for one more solution which could be Nutanix to replace the SimpliVity.

We use Dell's EqualLogic storage technology and Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers R740, R730, R740, and R750 servers. We are also using some applications and one or two servers from HP for Cisco operations. We have been working with Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers for maybe ten years. We use Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers for our healthcare applications and for running an old version of the exchange server.

The main benefits we receive from Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers are stability and reliability. While we occasionally receive complaints about hard disk failures, overall, we find the solution satisfactory. We could not continue with Dell due to high pricing, but we have transitioned to HP and are now moving to Sangfor and Nutanix.

Flexibility-wise, both Dell and HP solutions are okay for us, as we run VMware on Dell hardware, managing around 120 to 130 virtual machines. In the past, we primarily used Dell while paying to Dell and VMware, but given the changes in VMware's pricing after Broadcom's acquisition, we are now transitioning to HCI solutions that provide similar features.

We cannot give a proper estimation of power consumption due to high cooling and availability in our data center, but our HCI solutions consume less electricity now compared to older Dell servers, which had high energy consumption. We are not familiar with AI workloads, as no one has presented this feature to us. We purchased the product from a third-party business partner.

When comparing Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers with HP SimpliVity, we see that they serve different purposes; Dell operates standalone on VMware, whereas HP is a hyper-converged solution. Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers stands out as a better option in this context. Overall, we give Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers a final rating of six out of ten.

Centralized backups have simplified document sharing and have supported reliable daily operations
          Pros and Cons
          • "The biggest benefit my company gets from having Dell PowerEdge R-Series is that they work as we expect and deliver the performance that we expect."
          • "Even though there is some downtime, they are durable."

What is our primary use case?

We choose Dell PowerEdge R-Series to perform backup and to store multiple data for our team in our businesses. We do not do much with it. We mainly use external management for our business applications rather than internal management. For Dell PowerEdge R-Series, we primarily use it for backup and for network shares for the different people and staff.

          What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of having Dell PowerEdge R-Series is the iDRAC, and the ease of administration is nice too; they are quite easily manageable.

The biggest benefit my company gets from having Dell PowerEdge R-Series is that they work as we expect and deliver the performance that we expect. We mainly look at what is in the hardware when we buy servers; that is what interests us. If we buy servers from Dell, it is because they meet our expectations.

          What needs improvement?

There is a little margin for improvement. I would appreciate more facility to open the server and remove the pieces, such as the CPU, hard drive, and RAM but overall, the product is good to me.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerEdge R-Series for three years, my company has been using it for around 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

My impressions of the stability and reliability of Dell PowerEdge R-Series are good, as we still have some servers from Dell that we use for secondary purposes that are more than 20 years old.

Even though there is some downtime, they are durable. We had to tinker with them a little, change some parts, and repair them.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell PowerEdge R-Series does expand with my company's needs in a way, but we are not too dependent on it. Everything that is important for our company is hosted externally; we just have everything for network sharing of documents locally that staff need on the spot. We do not have large needs on the local server that we store at our place.

How are customer service and support?

I have not used Dell's customer support service; I do everything myself.

How would you rate customer service and support?

          Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have previously used other solutions, including HP and other brands of servers, but not many.

          How was the initial setup?

The best part about using Dell PowerEdge R-Series for a small company like mine is the simplicity of setup; it is simple to set up and fast, with no particular problems during setup, unlike certain other types of servers from other brands.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Comparing Dell PowerEdge R-Series to HP, HP is already much more complicated, notably on the part of their equivalent of iDRAC, which is much more obscure and less intuitive to understand.

What other advice do I have?

While we have not yet deployed AI initiatives on our Dell PowerEdge R-Series infrastructure, these projects are firmly on our future roadmap. We are currently in the early discussion and planning stages, and we expect to evaluate our hardware requirements more concretely as these projects progress.

I have no specific criticisms regarding the product. When compared to competitors, I highly recommend the PowerEdge R-Series for its streamlined setup and deployment. While I don't claim it is the only solution on the market, its simplicity and reliability are perfectly suited to our current environment. I rate the solution an 8 out of 10; it is a consistently strong performer, though there is always room for minor iterative improvements.

Delivers operational success and supports seamless growth through reliable infrastructure
          Pros and Cons
          • "I have realized a return on my investment with Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers in terms of cost savings."
          • "I rate Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers as a nine out of ten overall."
          • "From a Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers perspective, I would prefer to see them just keep up with the latest processors, with more power."

What is our primary use case?

We use Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers primarily in a virtualized environment for our company. Our company performs all different types of functions, from finance to healthcare, to all kinds of different business lines. We run all the internal proprietary applications on our Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers.

How has it helped my organization?

I would say Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers have supported growth and operational success for my company. It's a little outside of PowerEdge. Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers work with Dell's PowerFlex, a hyper-converged infrastructure.

The compute side is Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers with PowerFlex storage. We are in the middle of a lifecycle management where we're refreshing a lot of our new infrastructure with the Dell PowerFlex, which includes Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers.

One of our latest acquisitions is in the healthcare business, and we're buying all new Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers with PowerFlex storage.

          What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers for me are ease of management and connectivity to the large storage systems.

Flexibility and sizing of Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers, from compute to memory, cater specifically to our needs.

We use a storage platform that is outside of the box, so it's really about flexibility and what we need from various processors and available memory.

          What needs improvement?

From a Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers perspective, I would prefer to see them just keep up with the latest processors, with more power.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers for a long time, over five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have realized benefits from using Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers because we have a good partnership with Dell. Since we buy a lot, they give us good pricing. In my opinion, it's very stable, reliable hardware with minimal failures.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers scale perfectly with the growing needs of my company. We can throw in a new rack, add it to our VMware cluster, attach it to our SANs storage, and we're often running.

How are customer service and support?

Their support for their solutions is one of the best aspects of Dell.

How would you rate customer service and support?

          Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

At different companies, I have used IBM as a different solution to address similar needs before adopting Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers. Though they're a decent hardware vendor, I cannot say if their reliability is as good as Dell.

          How was the initial setup?

The deployment is pretty straightforward. In terms of a rack mount server, they have all the things we need to get them up and running.

          What was our ROI?

I have realized a return on my investment with Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers in terms of cost savings. The value of uptime to us is critical. We can equate in minutes of millions of dollars of lost revenue. Any type of failure or lost revenue can add up very quickly.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing for Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers has been very competitive. You get what you pay for. If you go with a cheaper vendor, you get what you pay for. My company has had a long relationship with Dell for good reasons. We have some equipment that's over ten years old that's never been turned off, still running strong. The partnership we have with Dell has been key to our success.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at IBM and HP as other solutions before Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers. From a hardware perspective, we considered Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers and physical servers. We looked at various virtualization products, however, that goes outside of Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers. We primarily considered HP and IBM.

What other advice do I have?

My role in using or managing Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers involves managing the compute and the servers specifically.

Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers do not currently play a role in my company's AI initiatives. We do have plans, however, for Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers to play a role in our future AI initiatives.

Performance, reliability, and cost stood out to me in my evaluation process of Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers. It's really a combination of those factors.

I rate Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers as a nine out of ten overall.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
