Arcserve UDP Room for Improvement
What I have noticed is that UDP can support some test versions of the OS like Linux 6.0 and macOS also 10.0, and 12.0, but sometimes with customers that are using older infrastructure, the UDP doesn't support the infrastructure. It's very challenging for the deployment aspect. The solution can improve by allowing older versions to support the latest version of the OS.
I would like to have the three licenses for Arcserve appliance, Arcserve Cloud, and Arcserve UDP bundled into one license.
The solution could improve by being more user-friendly. It can be difficult to assign destinations and choose which files and folders we need to back up. There are some aspects that are unclear.
When we access the source panel, we can view the scheduling and destination panels. To select source files or folders, we use the source panel. However, if we unintentionally uncheck a folder, we won't receive a notification. Similarly, if we mistakenly check a folder, we won't be notified, leaving room for errors. The green tick box must be checked to proceed.
There is room to improve the security of the solution and it would be helpful to provide training for the end users. Other vendors provide training to the end user which is helpful.

The solution's reporting could be improved and should provide customized reports. There are some steps to set some parameters on the console. For example, when creating a weekly report, we need to select, customize, and put the parameter over there. Arcserve UDP should have the option to create and select bullet points to generate a report.

Secondly, the troubleshooting part needs improvement as well. Presently, one needs to plug into the computer and then extract the logs in case of a problem.

The product is not user-friendly. Younger users prefer tools that are very intuitive and more graphical. The users operating the system must be trained properly. It is not a plug-and-play solution. It will be really useful if the solution provides disaster recovery features.

We are looking at scaling up to the cloud and using immutable copies on the cloud. Arcserve UDP 8.0 does have the immutable feature supporting AWS, but I'm looking for multi-cloud support. So, I'm waiting for Arcserve to release that in the next release.
I would like to see support for SAP HANA in UDP. We are looking for block-level backup or byte-level backup of SAP HANA because we are looking at migrating from the existing SQL to SAP HANA.
I had an issue with Arcserve UDP during the failover and the secondary machine didn't get back online, even though it ran automatically. I faced the issue during a crisis situation. However, I haven't faced such a problem again.
View full review »More than Arcserve UDP, the product acquired by it, which is ShadowProtect SPX, has certain shortcomings when it comes to areas like tape library. ShadowProtect SPX's ability to provide backup to disk and backup to the cloud is okay, but it fails to provide backup to tape.
The technical support of the product is an area of concern where improvements are required.

View full review »It is complicated for me to discuss features to improve since I don't use it regularly or don't check all products within the ArcSoft portfolio. They could work on their marketing approach. I don't see many people leveraging it. Veeam seems to have better marketing distribution and communication across different types of social media and you just don't see this solution anywhere.
View full review »The problem with Arcserve UDP stems from some green lights in the backups. The problem was the green light in the backup part, and when you tried to restore some data, the green light was showing up, but the restoration couldn't be done. With the problems in the green light, which is affiliated with the backup part of the solution, users can't be sure if they can take care of the restoration part, making it one of the areas where improvements are required.
I want the security features and the stability of the product to be improved.
The support could be more knowledgeable and faster.
We have to use a Microsoft hypervisor for installation which is expensive.

Customers do not like when there is a price increase, but it is understandable as everything in the economy is getting more expensive. Customers eventually get comfortable with the increased price and stop complaining.
View full review »There are two products under Arcserve. There are no single consoles for Arcserve. Arcserve introduced a backup solution and UDP, because of which there are still issues since our customers use the legacy agent-based backup, like SQL backup or Oracle backup, and when our company uses the backup from Arcserve, we need to select two consoles, which becomes an issue. Arcserve functions perfectly only if you use a basic virtual environment or a fully virtualized environment. One of the biggest drawbacks of Arcserve UDP is that it does not have a single console, making it an area that needs to be considered for improvement.
Arcserve doesn't consider its own backup tool, which is a very powerful product, and it may be because most people know only about Arcserve UDP and don't know how to work on the backup product from Arcserve.

We do our backup to tape and data protection over the weekend and it's very slow. I have issues when I do a Snapshot for VMware to a machine and spend time working on it, and I have a problem and want to go back to the snapshot, Arcserve does a full backup all over again.

The speed of restores should be improved. We have found the speed of large restores rather slow.
It should also back up Office 365 mailboxes. It would be nice to be able to restore PST files. It might already be there in version 8, which is a new version, but I haven't looked at it.

In the most recent version of premium plus the replication has been removed, and it should re-added to the solution. It is a big selling point.
It would be nice to have more features included with the ransomware protection.
The interface needs to be more user-friendly.

A lot of their new technologies are not very good.
The older products were fantastic. They invested in ShadowXafe, OneBox, and other companies, where they purchased hardware and attempted to reinvent product offerings that I do not use because they were difficult.

The only problem with the solution is that when I change the drive capacity, it has to do a full backup. It's a problem when I have five servers to backup. When I only want to change the size of the drive, I have to do a full backup that can take one week.

Its interface can be improved. I find it unintuitive.
It could have some integrations. It doesn't have some of the integration and some of the monitoring features that I would normally utilize. Some of the solutions have got integrations with different storage and things like that.

It should be easier to switch between backup locations. We have multiple data storage locations and sometimes one of those storages need to be replaced. It would be nice if they made it easier to reconfigure the backup configuration.
I would like to see an integrated solution from Arcseve to replicate it to the Azure environment of Arcserve itself, an environment set up by Arcserve ready to connect to the UDP software. It should be a plug and play to replicate the data to an Azure of Arcserve itself.

The product could be improved. For example, on Veritas, you can see a particular file, when it was backed up, on what particular archive it exists, et cetera. We were unable to retrieve that specific information from Arcserve for our requirements.
There could be additional features added based on the practical concerns we had. If I have backed up a certain amount of data, I want to know, if I give the path of the data, how much of data has been backed up, and the sizing information with regards to data. That information could be included in the features.

The solution can use a lot of bandwidth when the scheduling is not done, it should auto-schedule itself. For example, if there are 50 users connected in the network at 12 o'clock and the backup is not scheduled. At this time the network offices are going to have performance issues when it is doing a backup. Having a feature to auto-schedule a time when the network is not being used often would be beneficial.
The solution has a deduplication feature but while sending the data over the network it is not utilizing this feature. This could be improved in the future.

I think that the price could still be a bit cheaper and I do not like that they have been purchased by Arcserve.
View full review »Arcserve needs to add the Linux appliance for the setup, which should be available as the software appliance with an automated install on Bare Metal, as it is available for the OVA on VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V that supports KVM.
What I would like to see available in Arcserve is:
Virtual appliance for VMware, Hyper-V and KVM.
A software appliance that is ISO so you start installation on an approved server (from HPE, DELL, Cisco whatever as long as it is Tier 1 vendor available in every country today) and you create appliances without much thinking regarding how to lay down configuration.
The reason for this is that the support network for Arcserve appliances is not available in most of the countries outside USA or EU to replace broken units in less than 15 days.
So you stay without backup for a minimum of 15 days. With the software appliance, you avoid virtualization overhead and you create appliance according to best practice from Arcserve. This is something we do with Sophos UTM often.
Finally, I would like to see better integration with HCI (Nutanix, Scale Computing, and SimpliVity).

Use of RAM memory. I see no way to improve this without a SSD disk. I could not explain this more technically on a development level. The high use of RAM memory is a headache for those who wants to implement the system WITH all the resources in use. The RAM is used to cache data and make the deduplication process possible.

- We cannot restore each user's mailbox. Each user's mailbox should be independently restorable.
- This solution is very slow. If you select all of the servers, it runs for a long time. Even a full night is not enough to perform a backup. It needs to be faster.
- We are using a Linux server and a Windows Server, and those servers should be supported, as well as SQL Database, mail databases, and file servers.
- If anything happens to one server we should be able to switch to another server.
Many features that Arcserve proposes in its documentation and marketing material actually don't work properly in practice.
Veeam is the most comparable solution, considering features and capacities. They are very similar, but Veeam works fine most of the time.
With Arcserve, we have a lot of problems in implementing and getting compatibility, especially with legacy systems. We also have mysterious problems that no one can solve. The performance is not as planned or as intended. Our experience has been shaky. It's not very reliable as a tool, especially in critical cases like disaster recovery.
So we've been working on migrating all our projects to Veeam and other similar solutions that offer comparable features. Reliability is not Arcserve's greatest strength – implementation is rocky, and sizings never work as planned.
Plus, their cloud service is very slow and relatively expensive compared to Veeam.

Customer service and support need to be improved. Based on my experience, whenever we need support, there are difficulties with communication when trying to resolve the issue.
We have also had trouble with the tape sorter.
We have complaints about the simplicity of this product. They have the agent-based and agentless setup options, and there have been issues that meant we could not utilize Arcserve after a catastrophe with our network.

For the next release, I'd like to see
- SIFS (NetApp or EMC) support from the UDP console.
- In the current version we need to integrate with Arcserv backup 16.5 NDMP module
- Tighter integration with tape.
- Better Integration with RHA.
- Multi-Tenancy
- Virtual Stand by Seamless Integration form hyper v VHDX source to VMware VMDK
