Easy to use, stable, and good price, but its integration with third-party solutions can be better
Pros and Cons
  • "I am not a direct user of this product, but my technical guys tell me that they like the product, and it is easy to use. We don't have any issues with it."
  • "It would be nice if it could be integrated with third-party solutions like ours. It has been supporting just Windows and virtual machines."

What is our primary use case?

We develop our own replication solutions for the IBM i platform. Our product is called Maxava. We have 500 customers using that for disaster recovery, data replication. We use Veeam in-house for our Windows replication.

What is most valuable?

I am not a direct user of this product, but my technical guys tell me that they like the product, and it is easy to use. We don't have any issues with it.

What needs improvement?

It would be nice if it could be integrated with third-party solutions like ours. It has been supporting just Windows and virtual machines.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for about five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable. I am not aware of any issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. We're just using it in-house. We have maybe 20 to 23 users that we support on it.

How are customer service and support?

Our guys have probably talked to support from time to time, but I haven't seen any issues raised about it or anything like that. So, I presume it's all pretty good.

How was the initial setup?

It was pretty easy and straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Its pricing is really good.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution. From my point of view, I haven't had any issues with it.

I would rate Veeam Backup & Replication a seven out of ten.

High scalability, powerful stability, and best monitoring and performance
Pros and Cons
  • "Its stability and scalability were the main reasons for going for this solution. It is highly scalable, and its stability is also powerful. It has a friendly interface, and its monitoring and performance are the best in the market."
  • "The orchestration feature can be improved. They can improve the virtual machine orchestration to make it similar to VMware. They can also provide an option to automate the backup and recovery and schedule a backup."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for deploying machine backup and for recovery from a disaster recovery site. We also use it for file backup. For the database backup, we use the software embedded in the SQL Server.

What is most valuable?

Its stability and scalability were the main reasons for going for this solution. It is highly scalable, and its stability is also powerful.

It has a friendly interface, and its monitoring and performance are the best in the market.

What needs improvement?

The orchestration feature can be improved. They can improve the virtual machine orchestration to make it similar to VMware. They can also provide an option to automate the backup and recovery and schedule a backup.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable. This is the main reason why we chose Veeam for this client and not VMware.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is very scalable. This is another reason why we chose Veeam for backup and recovery for this client. It allows us to scale to many other projects. This project is very big. It involves more than 70 virtual machines in the production environment, and it is possible to scale to more than 100 virtual machines.

How are customer service and technical support?

We didn't face any problems with this solution.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

In the past, we also used VMware orchestration for VMware backup and recovery. Veeam is more stable and scalable, and its price is more attractive than VMware.

How was the initial setup?

It was easy for our deployment engineers. The deployment took a maximum of one week. In my company, probably seven engineers are in charge of this. My company has been a large integrator in Romania, and we have expertise in many areas of IT. We have five to seven people for each subdomain in IT.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Its price is reasonable for a big company or a big client. It is not too much. It is cheaper than VMware.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We tested VMware and Veeam solutions, and we chose Veeam for this project because our client is a public institution and required a very stable solution. Veeam is more stable than VMware, and our client preferred Veeam.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Veeam Backup & Replication a nine out of ten. There are some features that they need to improve in Veeam, but it is perfect for most of the companies in Romania.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

We utilize the integration with VMware. Reporting via PowerShell is useful for our daily checks.

Valuable Features

The overall backup tools, as we use this to prevent data loss.

Improvements to My Organization

Coming from tape backup environment to using Veeam and cloud upload dramatically changed and improved our backup process. The increase in backup speed was truly amazing, backup windows shrunk, we can also perform more frequent backups if more protection is required. There is obviously also the integration with VMware (which we utilize) and administration via PowerShell. All this, together with CloudBerry allowed us to fully automate our backup and offsite upload process. Reporting via PowerShell is extremely useful too i.e. for our daily checks.

Room for Improvement

Below, you’ll find various suggestions from both my admins and myself that would improve Veeam Backup

  • Built in upload to external storage. Using apps like Cloudberry, even though it can be automated, just adds unnecessarily complexity and one more point to break
  • Integrated and intuitive orphaned snapshot management. When things go wrong during backups, you can be left with orphaned snapshots consuming more space on your storage than is immediately visible. This can be very problematic under certain conditions. Integrated visibility into this would be very helpful in these cases.
  • Ability to shrink VRB files as servers are removed from jobs
  • Ability to reconnect VRB’s in the chain
  • Ability to attach and backup physical servers
  • Better visibility of deduplication percentages

Deployment Issues

Only issues were with licensing. Mixed versions across sites made licensing a bit difficult. Also, having to use Cloudberry to upload to AWS S3 is not ideal, although it does work OK.

Stability Issues

The product is very stable.

Scalability Issues

It is highly scalable.

Customer Service and Technical Support

I haven’t dealt with Veeam support, but my team say that tech support is decent and the skill varies significantly from tech to tech. We've discovered more solutions from the user forums than through tech support.

Initial Setup

Setup is very straightforward. Creating backup jobs and remote storage learning curve is not intuitive, but a quick scan of the documentation allows for quick study. Difficulty level is low.

However, having to use a separate application (Cloudberry) to upload to AWS S3 is very cumbersome and seems like something that should be integrated into the core product.

Implementation Team

We performed it in-house and did not use a vendor team or a consultant.

Other Solutions Considered

I wasn’t part of that project, but I believe at the time we also looked at AppAssure and Veeam was more flexible for us and more economical too.

Other Advice

This is perfect backup solution for small to medium businesses that have an onsite VM environment. If you’re using AWS S3 for off-site then look elsewhere. This does not support it natively despite what their marketing might lead one to believe.

We're able to restore entire virtual machines in under 15 minute, although I'd like to see the virtual-environment concept or technology applied to backup physical servers.

Valuable Features:

  • Support for VMware Virtual Volumes (VVols) that allows direct backup from snapshots of storage systems that support VVols and VMware Virtual SAN 2.0
  • Granular recovery of objects from MS SQL, Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange
  • Backup and replication of Fault Tolerant (FT) VMs
  • Cross-vCenter vMotion awareness
  • Hot-Add transport mode of SATA virtual disks
  • Support for Veeam Cloud Connect that allows customers to backup their offsite backups into the cloud

Improvements to My Organization:

This product has really reduced our recovery time objective considerably because we are able to restore entire virtual machines in under 15 minutes whenever that has come up.

Not just that, though, as we are also able to restore individual objects requested by customers, e.g. deleted messages from an Exchange server. The Veeam product has reduced the time it takes to configure and monitor backups.

Room for Improvement:

Although this product is technically designed for virtual environments, it would be very useful if the same concepts or technology is applied to backup physical servers.

That is what I would love to see Veeam implement or add as a feature to a future product.

Other Advice:

Veeam is a good product that is easy to deploy and manage and it just really works.

If you want physical backup you can always try the Endpoint Backup product as it does physical servers. We use it on our Veeam servers which are physical and I am testing on Exchange servers too. Great product and can use Veeam repositories too.

We've reduced the time it takes to manage backups, which can be done without offsite infrastructure. Like with all technologies, however, there's the constant need for updates, patches, replacements.

Valuable Features:

  • With Veeam Cloud Connect and Azure Storage you can get your backups offsite.
  • With it, you don't have the complexity of managing an offsite infrastructure.
  • It may even help to reduce your DRC strategy costs.

Improvements to My Organization:

For us, it's a simple solution for our complex environment. It has helped us reduce the time to manage backups.

Room for Improvement:

Everyday technology needs updates, patches, replacements. The challenge for us is to have resources up to date so that our skills and technical knowledge are up-to-date. Such is the case with all products, so it is as well with Veeam Backup.

It's easy to restore from a backup and, as it's an OS-aware solution, I can also recover deleted objects to Active Directory.

What is most valuable?

As a backup solution, the de-duplication and direct-to-tape functions are very valuable. It also has WAN acceleration, though I've yet to use that feature.

How has it helped my organization?

  • In various ways, we are using an Active Directory OS-aware backup, and I can recover deleted objects to AD.
  • When I need to duplicate a machine for test purposes, it is very easy to restore from a backup.

What needs improvement?

Managing snapshots during the backup.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used it for two years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues encountered.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues encountered.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues encountered.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

I don't have any experience as I've never needed to contact them.

Technical Support:

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I was using a VMware built-in backup solution, but it wasn't at all friendly to operate.

How was the initial setup?

It is straightforward and very easy.

What about the implementation team?

I did it myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is higher than other similar products.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Only a VMware backup solution.

What other advice do I have?

Go ahead, it is a very good choice and will give you peace of mind. I've found that it's the best backup solution for a virtual infrastructure.

Expandable and a well-respected solution that has a lot of technical expertise available in the market
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a global major solution for quite a lot of people."
  • "The initial setup can get complex."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for backup replication - mostly for Office 365 Backup and sometimes as a cloud backup.

What is most valuable?

It is a global major solution for quite a lot of people. That makes it easy to find somebody who knows how to work with Veeam Backup.

The scalability is good.

What needs improvement?

The solution needs to have the capacity to address more legacy workloads. For example, things like integration with tapes.

The initial setup can get complex.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been working with the solution for a while.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution can scale. It's a solution that is enabled me to 500 VMs.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup can be complex.

Some environments can become really complex and big environments are often difficult.

For a small environment, deployment can be four days, including what must be done to achieve a real project. For a big environment, it depends, but it can be much longer.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We were evaluating Spectrum Protect Plus, but we are not really using it and we are not selling it.

What other advice do I have?

I'm a reseller.

We are always working with the latest upgrade.

I'd advise users to feel free to do a proof of concept to verify that it covers every use case that they need at least.

I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

What is our primary use case?

My primary use of the solution is for virtual machines backup and physical servers backup.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution has improved our organization because it's very fast in backup recovery. In case of emergency, the instant recovery is very fast, and that's made everything better.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the instant recovery.

What needs improvement?

Physical servers backup should be improved in the product.

An additional feature I'd like to see would be more cloud solutions. They need to focus more on cloud backup.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I switched to this solution because it is more for virtual machines.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward, and only takes half an hour.

What about the implementation team?

I did the implementation myself. To implement, you have to prepare servers, prepare storage, and prepare virtual machines.
