OpenText LoadRunner Enterprise Valuable Features

KM
Senior Performace Engineer at Yolandi,miller@multichoice.co.za

For me, LoadRunner stands out, especially with its reporting capabilities, the graphs that can be generated, and the unique feature of measuring our application's response alongside our infrastructure metrics, such as CPU, memory, or disk usage, all presented in graph form. This is something other applications struggle to match.

The real-time monitoring and analysis feature improved our test accuracy. It significantly enhances test accuracy by providing a holistic view of the testing process. Real-time monitoring allows us to see not only the front-end response times but also what's happening with the back-end systems or infrastructure, making it much easier to identify and troubleshoot bottlenecks.

The tool is user-friendly and easy to learn, which is great for newcomers to performance testing. The challenge comes with scripting, especially for those without a programming background. Understanding code and modifying scripts with conditions requires some coding knowledge. Without it, it's less likely to fully utilize the tool.

It is pretty easy to do test execution and results analysis. When it comes to scenario settings, LoadRunner Enterprise has an extra edge over other testing tools in the industry. The scenario setup is easy, and in terms of execution, we have a clear idea of what is happening. When it comes to analysis, it is easy to download the analysis file and see all the analysis. We have many filters available, and it is easy to customize according to our needs.

I find the runtime settings beneficial for creating realistic load scenarios, which allow me to combine different actions into realistic workload scenarios. So, runtime settings and the features in there.

The real-time test analysis and reporting feature has very much enhanced the testing processes for me. In terms of reporting, I have a controller that must be used all the time to make the most out of that license. So, basically, the server that has the controller installed is used window after window of testing.

I use it for two hours, another colleague's test for two hours, etc. Now, if my test lasts exactly one hour and a half or two hours, I do not have the necessary time to analyze the results on the server.

So I take it offline on my computer, where I have the Analyzer for free, due to OpenText's license system. And then I can analyze it offline for as much as I want so I can draw my conclusions.

Features inside the Analyzer that I use are overlapping graphs or correlation of graphs, all these kinds of stuff which allow me to see the results much faster than in other tools.

For me, the test coverage and the performance and load testing aspects are valuable. I have a test management team that works for me. They are the guys who are writing JMeter and Selenium scripts and custom labs to do all the testing. I do not get overly involved in that. My role is more about whether the overall solution is going to work. Is the overall platform going to work? Are we within SLA? Are we within functionality? Also, when we do any upgrades or releases, I have to certify to the client. I need to know how many scripts we have run. If we have done only fifty because we only got two weeks, I need them to do more. Having automated testing that we can run and have it consistent every time, and that can run quicker and more efficiently is very important. I get that level of performance, load, and regression functional testing that makes it easier for me to sleep at night.

The host performance testing of any application using a host/controller is the most valuable feature. This feature helps to replicate virtual users, configure multiple test scripts, and configure multiple simulators from various geographic locations to run a single test. There are a lot of configurations available to replicate browser cache/with no browser cache and network-related features prior to triggering any test.

The beauty of the host is that any tester can launch it and check the status of runs, monitor test statistics, etc.

The type of application support Micro Focus LoadRunner Enterprise has is very good. The solution does support a wide range of technologies and protocols. Plus, two features, network virtualization, and service virtualization, are really helpful. Apart from that, the way they have their billing scenarios, like the execution, is very good. We can also have a lot of flexibility in building various scenarios or a load test which is one good thing. I like the way they have made their reporting area. We have a different option. We can schedule our scripts to execute at a specific time based on the requirement with a specified number of users. LoadRunner offers such facilities which other tools lack.

OpenText helps us identify the amount of load testing impacts on overall performance. We can measure metrics like hits per second and detect deviations or issues through graphs. We can filter out response times based on timings and identify spikes in the database or AWS reports. We can also analyse long-running queries or reasons behind response time degradation. By filtering out details like 90th or 95th percentile response times, we gain insight into when and why transactions degrade, providing detailed information.

What I like most in Micro Focus LoadRunner Enterprise is the comparison between two different exhibitions which gives value to my company. I also like that the solution is user-friendly, especially in terms of making specific changes. For example, in the past, you can't see the changes when you upload scripts into the Performance Center, but now, it has that visibility, so whenever you want, you can change the script in the Performance Center.

I also like that Micro Focus LoadRunner Enterprise is the only tool you can utilize for all your needs, even for different protocols and scripting. The solution also has the latest features, for example, networkability, where it can, within the UI, follow the waterfall model. You can use the insights in the Performance Center of Micro Focus LoadRunner Enterprise to address or test URLs that usually take up much time.

We have a centralized delivery team and we are able to meet enterprise requirements, which include different types of protocols that are involved, including scripting. The technology supports that and enables us to have a wider range of testing. Enterprise-level testing is something that we are satisfied with.

LoadRunner helps to facilitate sharing of best practices and skills. That's the way we expect any enterprise tool to work. It helps us to follow best practices and share them with other teams as well. It's quite important to have that consistency in terms of the quality of deliverables. It plays a key role. It enables us to have that benchmarking in terms of quality and is one of the crucial requirements for us.

The cross-project reporting and business views are among the valuable features because a huge platform can have multiple projects that are being executed in parallel. In that scenario, the reporting provides a holistic view for the stakeholders.

One of the most valuable features of this solution is recording and replaying, and the fact that there are multiple options available to do this. For example, a normal web application can be recorded and replayed again on many platforms. Moreover, it can be recorded in different ways.

An application can be recorded based on your user experience, or just the backend code experience, or whether you want to record using a different technology, like a Java-specific recording, or a Siebel-specific recording. All of these different options and recording modes are available.

The scheduling feature is very helpful because it shows me time slots in calendar format where I can view all of the tests that are currently scheduled. It also displays what infrastructure is available to me to schedule a load test if I need to.

It provides a different platform for testing in an organized fashion. One of the big things is data warehousing, data analytics, you want to get from being reactive to proactive to predictive. Those are the progressions that we want to make. It's going to be extremely difficult when you start to incorporate testing platforms, testing techniques, to tooling, into pipeline, into any of these DevOps pipelines. If we can't collect the data, if we don't really know what's going on, then it becomes very hard to make testing decisions from tooling to technique to platforms.

Performance Center innately provides you the ability to manage those assets. And it's also a different type of testing, independent of something that might be more unit based. We want to be able to test at the integration or the system level, which is a completely different approach to testing compared to a developer who may be doing something very, very low-level. Instead of changing the class.

We want to make sure that all these areas of testing are not just being done, but they're also able to be audited. Because, without access to the data, it makes it very difficult to implement solutions going forward. Whether they're new or they may be something that's up for modernization to keep up with DevOps and pipelining.

What I really like is our team's core competence in building good tests that really do find issues, because of our full-time dedication to it. We have Performance Center as a platform to share with others that don't do performance testing full-time, so that they in an agile fashion, on demand can go ahead and get real issue-finding testing done; then to go ahead and have that pulled into trending reports so that even subtle differences or trends over time are found and not just game-changing defects. Again, it's a platform to get expert level things done for the masses.

Performance Center, in our company, is used for important applications where we have a lot of users, or special needs for performance that are important.

We have a central team that implements the scripts and executes the tests. It depends on the years of experience of the users. The investment goes down, then we have more issues. Then money is spent and then investment goes up. So it is a curve. Everything is going up, as it is in ALM. ALM is still a growing market.

ALM centralizes everything. It allows you to work out how well you are doing project-wise because you see the number of scripts done, the number of tests run, and whether you have mapped all your requirements to it. You can produce metrics there fairly easily for your line management and higher. So, overall, it is better than people using Excel spreadsheets.

Performance Center is good because it allows you to share resources, which wasn't happening with Load Runner. With Load Runner, everyone was very specific. I've just got these controllers and their mine and I might only be using them five percent of the time but I need them tomorrow. And I can’t allow anyone else to use them because it will disrupt my schedule.

With Performance Center, you start to get into position where people can say, "I need to run a test, how many assets are available? When can I plan to do it?"
It also provides discipline because you stop getting people saying, "We're ready to do performance testing," because they've got to schedule the test. They've got to use that period when they've scheduled it. If they don't we pull it back and somebody else can use it. You get a lot of people screaming they've lost their slot but what you've proven to them is that they're not ready for performance testing.

It's very good from that point of view. It focuses people's minds on actually using their time effectively.

  • It helps you to build custom design application simulation models that enable the performance test engineer to assess an enterprise, multi-tier, heavily-distributed, high-traffic application on how the application for that particular release meets its non-functional test requirements and SLA thresholds, which are key business-transaction response times.
  • It tell you your applications' CPU computational power usages under various conditions such as stress, volume, and scalability.
  • Its distributed nature will let you choose load generators that can be geographically located anywhere, thus traffic simulations from multiple locations make it possible to create a real production scenario.
  • The true advantage of Performance Center is the ability to enable multiple engineers to do design and validate their script locally, but to execute them globally by using global resources spread across an organization.
  • The other advantage is the integration with HP SiteScope which lets you to perform deep-dive monitoring of your application under test during your test execution for live health analysis using several readily available monitoring templates.

One of the things in the airline business, we see that our number of users varies on a day to day basis, from season to season. So, from an airline business standpoint, we are looking at scalability as one the major things and how can we adapt the solution in an agile fashion. If we want to ramp up the "Our Views" account, from, let's say 10,000 to 50,000, how can we do that? That kind of scalability is the main key thing we are looking at.

High scalability. Web-based testing. The interface. If you're familiar with the days of using LoadRunner, when you had to have the 32-bit client, using a web-based client is fantastic. You can spin it up relatively quickly despite the fact that it's enterprise software. You can test a huge variety of applications, not just web-based systems, but SAP, Oracle, web services, pretty much anything out in the market place, but it's mobile-based testing.

Performance Center is actually run by a performance engineering group so in every release you have a performance engineering phase that runs at the same time as UAT. That's pretty much used to ensure that we're going to hit our production stability, scalability, etc., when a product finally goes in.

That is used in a phase gate, it's not continually run. That's one of the things we're eventually going to get to, that you continually run it.

I think, for me, the most valuable part of the product is the way you can do the basic testing. You can create the test script and then simulate thousands of users very, very easily. Instead of having to have lots-and-lots of systems that would emulate users, you just needed a couple to emulate tens of thousands of users. So the scalability of LoadRunner while it was testing scalability is really valuable.

I think the number one feature everybody likes is the capability to easily generate virtual users as well as the reporting. Recently, we are starting to look at things more from the diagnostic perspective as well as from the troubleshooting perspective. It gives us many more options for troubleshooting and presenting reports. The other reason why LoadRunner is quite popular for us is that it has a long track record. We know if we need to look for a solution we can still search and find a use case or a solution quite easily.

I like the new pricing model. It helps us to ramp up much better, especially when we were trying to use this for SaaS applications. They have a much more practical pricing model now. It allows us to break it down smaller and also build-up towards a price model that works for the client. I think that was a big bottleneck in the past — now it looks much better.

From a technical perspective, LoadRunner has always been good. You can trust that it can deliver. The big bottleneck in the past has always been the pricing model. Now, with the new approach, with the use of SaaS, we are currently in proposals to recommend LoadRunner as a solution for one of our government clients. We are doing an implementation there.

It is a very powerful tool. They pitch it as the market leader and it kind of is. It's that big “one-tool-fits-all” kind of option.
