They started their cloud journey a lot sooner than other solutions
Pros and Cons
  • "I like how Veeam intuitively integrates with Zerto."
  • "Restoration takes about two to four hours with Veeam. Zerto can restore in about 10 seconds. That's the restoration speed I'm looking for now that we're dealing with ransomware."

What is most valuable?

I like how Veeam intuitively integrates with Zerto. They started on their cloud journey a lot sooner than other backup software, and Veeam has a lower footprint on your Commvault.

What needs improvement?

Restoration takes about two to four hours with Veeam. Zerto can restore in about 10 seconds. That's the restoration speed I'm looking for now that we're dealing with ransomware. This is one area where Zerto has an edge on Veeam.  However, both are easy to use.

The only thing I would like to see from Veeam is a calculator for estimating the costs on all the different cloud providers. I don't think any product has this. So if I go into Azure versus AWS, it would be nice to have some way to calculate what I will end up paying.

One thing I've noticed is that both cloud providers will say it's going to cost you X amount to do a backup, and it's simple to compare costs between them. But if you want to do a site recovery, it will cost more to start up all the servers you were backing up in that cloud. Even though one cloud provider might save you money on backup, your total costs will be higher when you factor in restoration. I want the transparency to say Azure is more cost-effective than AWS for backup, but Azure will cost you 2 percent more than the other one to provide that visibility to my client.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Veeam Backup for about 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For traditional environments with physical servers, Veeam isn't as great as combos or traditional backup systems like TSM. However, if you are looking at virtualization or shifting to the cloud, Veeam is stable and quite progressive in those spaces.

Absolutely stable, doesn't involve a lot of management, and does what we need it to do in the background
Pros and Cons
  • "Its simplicity and the fact that it just works are most valuable. We kind of set it up and generally forget about it. It does what we need it to do in the background, and it doesn't involve a lot of management."
  • "It is always nice to get products cheaper."

What is our primary use case?

We use it internally for our own systems, and we have slightly less need on our clients' side, just because they rarely need that kind of system. We can achieve it with other tools.

What is most valuable?

Its simplicity and the fact that it just works are most valuable. We kind of set it up and generally forget about it. It does what we need it to do in the background, and it doesn't involve a lot of management.

In terms of functionality, it's pretty good, There is a lot of variety in what it can do and how it can back up. We probably use only 10% of what it is kind of capable of, so we're not really pushing the boundaries of it and having any problem.

What needs improvement?

It is always nice to get products cheaper.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been dealing with this solution for maybe five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is absolutely stable. We tend to set it and forget it. It has been a very reliable solution.

How are customer service and support?

We don't really have much experience with their support. Over the five years, we've maybe put in one or two tickets, and that's about it.

How was the initial setup?

It is very simple. It is pretty self-explanatory as long as you understand the virtual environments that you're working with. Veeam itself is pretty easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is always nice to get products cheaper.

Technically, it saves you a lot of money. If you wanted to buy the same functionality out of vSphere, you would spend thousands to essentially get the same functionality.

What other advice do I have?

I would highly recommend it, but it also depends on whether or not it all fits in with the clients and the pricing model. It is like any backup solution. You have to consider what you're trying to get out of it before you go ahead and configure it, but for backup and replication across hosts, it works really well.

I would rate it a nine out of 10 for what it does. I don't know anything that does it as well.

Stable, easy to install and user-friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "I'm satisfied with tech support, because the solution is so stable that I haven't had the need to engage any of the engineers yet."
  • "The ability to do more backups should be addressed."

What is our primary use case?

I am using the latest version of the solution.

We use the solution for backing up data to disk.

What is most valuable?

The solution is very user-friendly.

There are no surprises when it comes to the licensing, as we are not on the front-end TV licensing model.

What needs improvement?

The ability to do more backups should be addressed. This process would require us to increase the storage or do concurrent backups on tapes, necessitating changing the number of drives that can be used to write on tapes.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for the past four or five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a very good solution. I would recommend it. It's stable and I have not had any issues with it. An issue which we might encounter would involve us running out of space on the tapes. To me, the solution is perfect for use.

How are customer service and support?

I'm satisfied with tech support, because the solution is so stable that I haven't had the need to engage any of the engineers yet. That's the best thing about it.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to going with the solution, I used NetBackup.

How was the initial setup?

Installation is easy and even the management of features is. I rate installation as an eight-point-five or nine out of ten for its ease of use.

What about the implementation team?

The installation was through a third party. It was handled by one of our partners.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are no surprises when it comes to the licensing, as we are not on the front-end TV licensing model.

When I did a tech refresh, we took out a subscription for the coming five years.

What other advice do I have?

The regulations require that we hold onto the data for several months, so we do the feedback that's on Sands and then move it on tapes. This is why we need to move feedback from the disks to the tapes.

I was pretty surprised by the compression rate, because it does a pretty good job. I would say the only disadvantage that I have on my end is the fact that we are limited in the number of backups that can be run concurrently, in respect of backup tapes, because this is limited by the number of clouds. This is not a commentary on the solution itself, as it has more to do with infrastructure.

The number of backups that can be done concurrently is dependent on our attached hardware. Solution-wise, I would rank the solution as being up there with the best.

As we are responsible for our Veeam backups and service, I would say that the solution is being used by the whole company, around 40 people.

I would definitely recommend this product to others.

I rate Veeam Backup & Replication as a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Scalable, reliable, and consistent
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution just works consistently. I never have issues with it."
  • "I have issues with the licensing."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is primarily used for disaster recovery, replication, and stacking up all the endpoints using the product's endpoint component.

What is most valuable?

Setting up the replication is very simple.

The solution just works consistently. I never have issues with it.

The product is stable.

The scalability is excellent.

What needs improvement?

I have issues with the licensing.

The solution isn't ideal for small companies or systems. It's much more geared towards larger entities.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been dealing with the solution for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is excellent. The solution just runs. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze It's extremely reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability has been great. I can pretty much do whatever I need to. The problem is the licensing. Scalability equals licensing and that costs quite a bit.

The solution is best for businesses that are larger - those that have got multiple systems, and by that I mean about 20-plus systems, that need to be protected.

How are customer service and support?

I have no issues with technical support. They have been helpful and responsive and I am satisfied with the level of service I get.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of it has a learning curve that is a little bit steep, however, you quickly get a hang of it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is quite expensive, and that becomes an issue if you need to scale. Costs add up quite quickly. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how good your product is, if it's not affordable, you're not going to get people behind it.

What other advice do I have?

I'm an end-user.

My company uses both private cloud and on-premise deployment models.

The solution is a very good product for what it does.

I'd rate the product at a nine out of ten.

If this is a good solution or not for a company depends on the company size and what it wants to achieve. If your company is about 15 to 20 people and you just need to have backup and recovery and not have to worry about 24/7 uptime, then I wouldn't recommend Veeam for you. However, if you need something that is up 24/7 and you can quickly recover, then I would say go with Veeam. For big systems, I'd say you'd go with Veeam, and that it works best as an onsite system. When you start moving to the cloud, and when you need to back up the data for the company, you've got other systems that also can handle it.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Multiple functions, simple to use and install, and well-documented
Pros and Cons
  • "I'm pleased with the ability to search for documents; it's very useful."
  • "Scalability, as well as licensing costs, need to be improved."

What is our primary use case?

This solution is used to backup, restore, and replicate our data.

What is most valuable?

It's an easy-to-use tool with multiple functions.

The replication is easy.

It provides good findability of the missing documents.

I'm pleased with the ability to search for documents; it's very useful.

There is a lot of documentation available online. The Veeam forum is a great place to start because it contains a great deal of information.

What needs improvement?

Scalability, as well as licensing costs, need to be improved.

I like the idea of a web-based version or a web console. That is the top priority for us.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for more than five years.

We are working with the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Some features are missing, such as web-based versions.

I only have the software on the machine, and I must log in to use the software. There are some features that are missing in terms of stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability needs to be improved.

In our organization, I am the only user from the IT department.

How are customer service and support?

I contacted technical support in the middle of last year. There was an issue with our Veeam account that was resolved in a matter of days.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward.

It is just a small installer. That was all there was to it, we just needed to fill in some options.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing cost needs improvement.

We have a yearly perpetual license.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I was comparing Veeam to Dell DPS, and I was looking for information on products other than Veeam or Dell but were somewhere in between.

What other advice do I have?

My advice is to determine whether the version they have is the correct one that they require, as Veeam has three different versions. As a result, you must determine which version is appropriate for your organization. That is a mistake that we have made in the past.

I would rate Veeam Backup & Replication an eight out of ten.

Works well for failover and disaster recovery, has good replication, and is relatively cheap
Pros and Cons
  • "Replication is most valuable."
  • "The cloud part of it can be improved. There should be an option for Veeam in your own cloud, as compared to the Veeam cloud offering that's currently there. The rest of it is easy."

What is our primary use case?

It is for backup and replication.

How has it helped my organization?

We use it for failover and disaster recovery. There have been times when our primary systems have failed, and we've been able to run virtually until our primary systems are available again. From a business continuity experience, it has worked fairly well.

What is most valuable?

Replication is most valuable.

What needs improvement?

The cloud part of it can be improved. There should be an option for Veeam in your own cloud, as compared to the Veeam cloud offering that's currently there. The rest of it is easy.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I am not trying to scale it up.

How are customer service and support?

I didn't have any issues with technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We use Zerto for the main part, and Veeam for a little part. We use them for different things. I prefer Zerto because I get a better RTU and RPO. It may be not as easy to set up, but once it is working, the RPO is in a region of 10 seconds. As compared to Veeam, its replication is currently two or three times.

How was the initial setup?

It is of medium complexity.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is relatively cheap.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others to use it. It is a good system.

I would rate it an eight out of 10.

Reliable with helpful technical support and competitive pricing
Pros and Cons
  • "It's a pretty complete product."
  • "During the initial setup especially, there's a bit of a learning curve."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is primarily used for backups.

We're a managed service provider and we use it to back up our own stuff. We use it to backup all of our client's data. Obviously, depending on the client, they're very much siloed. We've got multiple backups and multiple instances of Veeam deployed in their particular partitioned-off networks. Those are daily backups. We do full backups and we do incremental backups. Exactly what that schedule depends on the client itself, however, on a daily or a weekly basis, we have the typical things that end users do where they delete files and we have to go recover them.

How has it helped my organization?

We've had catastrophic failures at sites due to our location in Florida. Over the years, hurricanes come through and things happen, and we've had to deploy backups to get clients back up and running.

What is most valuable?

The most important features of backups are them being able to make sure they're reliable, and that whatever you need to restore you have access to. Veeam offers us that. You can easily restore everything to get the data back in the event of an emergency.

It's a pretty complete product.

For the most part, it is competitively priced.

Technical support has always been very helpful and responsive.

What needs improvement?

Pricing is always an issue. The less it costs, the better for us and our clients. Therefore, if they can lower the costs, that would be ideal for us.

The ease of usability and a learning curve to get up to speed are usually important. If they can continue to streamline and simplify their product, that would help us a lot. During the initial setup especially, there's a bit of a learning curve.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been in the business for 30 plus years and have health with multiple backup solutions, including Veeam, for many, many years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is reliable. It's stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support has been good. We haven't had any issues really.

How was the initial setup?

There's a learning curve you need to deal with when you are implementing the product. Once you're implementing it and figuring out everything configuring the features, it's okay, however, it's not exactly straightforward.

We go through some training first from our more senior-level people that have already been using it when we train new people, and obviously, that has helped when it comes to implementation. We're finding it's getting easier to cross-train folks.

We're generally able to support it, in terms of maintenance. We've got thousands of users, and therefore, we've got several people on the team at various stages. We have two or three senior guys and then we have several of the mid-tier folks, and obviously, we've got new folks coming on every month that we're cross-training for the entry-level positions.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In terms of pricing, our marketing department handles that. I don't really deal with that area. However, I can say that I would assume that the solution is competitive or else we would not be using the product.

I'd advise those considering the solution to first make sure they take the vendor training and get at least one or two on the team up to speed from people that know the product. Then, use them to cross-train the rest of your staff.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I'm always researching and downloading information, and recently, I was looking at that Cloud Backup Report.

We've looked at other options. They're all pretty similar. With Veeam, the interface seems to be fairly easy to use and the price points are good. I don't know exactly what it is off the top of my head, however, I know that we've had several conversations about it being price competitive.

What other advice do I have?

I've done lots of backups in the past, both onsite offsite, and for DR.

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten.

Pros and Cons
  • "Veeam Backup & Replication is a great alternative to what is out there. Some of the backups just allow an agent backup to the cloud. You can back up a thousand different ways, but this is a great way to keep a customer and a company in compliance in that they've got their data secure onsite and offsite. The data being transferred to the NAS at the customer's location and also the data being sent to the cloud is encrypted in transit and it's also encrypted at rest so that nobody is going to be able to hack into that. No one will have the keys to do that."
  • "Veeam is good up until 300 VMs."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case with Veeam Backup & Replication is to backup critical data. We would recommend that a person put on a Veeam backup service so that in a disaster recovery scenario you set what has to come back up first because that is going to be the critical information that has to go back up as quickly as possible. You can put anything on critical servers, but we recommend that you use it for critical data that it is going to be restored within a four hour timeframe.

Veeam Backup & Replication can be deployed as agent-based or you can set it up to replicate back to a NAS, some sort of device onsite, so that a copy of your data goes to the device onsite and another copy goes to a data center for a backup as well. Then, if that server crashes, the device that's at the location has the latest copy of the good data from where they get the backup.

How has it helped my organization?

Veeam Backup & Replication has most definitely improved our organization because it saves the IT a lot of headache.

What is most valuable?

Veeam Backup & Replication is a great alternative to what is out there. No one will have the keys to do that.

The dashboard is very, very easy to understand. We do demonstrations all the time with customers just to show them. If they've lost particular files because of a server going down, we can retrieve those files for them and quickly bring those files back up. So in a disaster recovery where you've got a location that's either been hit with a tornado, a hurricane, an earthquake, or whatever the disaster might be, this company and customer has to be up, then this data is secured offsite as well, and can be pulled down either to a VM, a virtual machine, or to another physical server. It is just a matter of how fast your internet connection is.

What needs improvement?

Until internet connectivity becomes standard all over the country and all over the world, as far as minimum speeds, the main thing would be just making sure that your data is being transferred as quickly as possible, that the data transfers are seated correctly, and that the replication takes place and is monitored. The service can be managed or unmanaged, it just depends on the customer's IT ability as to how much or how little we can help.

There is always room for improvement on anything, but at this point I think it's perfect. But I'm sure there are other things that customers are wanting that Veeam could probably put in their next update or patch. But at this point I don't have any information on that.

As companies grow, it just depends on what their needs are as to what we can help them with as far as the recovery is concerned. Larger businesses with more than 300 VMs would be a perfect scenario for Rubrik. Veeam, I think is good up until 300 VMs. With other services that we have, it could be lower than a hundred VMs, but it seems that Veeam is in a good spot.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for probably the last four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution runs very smoothly unless there is a server that goes offline on a customer's site that we don't know about, but other than that, the service is rock solid.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is pretty much straightforward. It's just like updating software. For anybody that has a little bit of sense about how to update services it is pretty straightforward and simple.

Our clients are a mixture of small, medium and large businesses and they are all over the country.

How are customer service and technical support?

I do sales, so I'm the one that is responsible for selling the sizzle. My IT folks, my engineers, are the ones that face Veeam the company. I would say that the majority of the companies that we deal with in backup and recovery are very, very responsive and I feel Veeam is the same way. It's a great software package, it is inexpensive and it does a lot of things that IT companies and people in general want to see.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We use EVault software and Carbonite backups, it just depends on the customer. If you can tolerate 12 to 24 hours of being out of service, then we have other backup services that are right in the ballpark in pricing, but just older technologies. Nowadays everything is like McDonald's and I want it now. I want my hamburger now and I want my data now. It is getting to where customers want that faster RTO and RPO so that they can have their company back up and making money as quickly as possible.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is pretty straightforward if you've got a person that knows how things go. Most midsize and large companies will have an IT person on staff that would understand that. If they don't understand it, of course our guys, our engineers, can train them for that and show them which way to go. But normally IT people are pretty familiar with dashboards.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to anyone considering Veeam Backup & Replication would be to definitely demo it and see what you think about it because you can't try it before you buy it, and see how it works in your environment. I'm not too sure if there are any trials that go on for a month at a time, but it depends on the customer. If they decide that this is something good for them, then we move forward with it and adjust as we go. But the majority of our customers know what Veeam is and have seen the product out there, because I send a lot of information out via LinkedIn and send emails to my customers about those services. It would just depend on whether it was an attorney's office, a hospital, whatever he is, but those folks would want to have their data as quickly as possible.

On a scale of one to ten, I would give Veeam Backup & Replication a 10.
