Offers good protection, and has a wide variety of features
Pros and Cons
  • "They have a wide range of products, including a couple for virtual patching, which is very important."
  • "Trend Micro Apex One is very stable."
  • "I would like to see the initial setup simplified to make it less complicated, and the price reduced."
  • "The price is very high in comparison to EDR, XDR, and MDR. When compared to Symantec, Kaspersky, and others the price is higher, they are more expensive."

What is our primary use case?

We use Trend Micro Apex One for endpoint scanning.

What is most valuable?

They have a wide range of products, including a couple for virtual patching, which is very important. They also have, cloud-based sandboxing options.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see the initial setup simplified to make it less complicated, and the price reduced.

Normally, I've seen the price of any antivirus for the first year where they will give you a free price comparison and a discount of 30%, 40%, but the second year, after renewal, they'll give you the normal standard list price.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Trend Micro Apex One for more than three years.

We work with on-premises solutions. There is no option for cloud solutions by default.

We are using the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Trend Micro Apex One is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have a very small network of 152, and I expect it to be scalable. People are using it at 3,000. You go as you need more.

We had 140 to 170 or 200 users, but have had to cut back due to the pandemic. It's now between 140 and 150.

We intend to increase our usage by another ten or fifteen percent in the future.

How are customer service and support?

There will always be problems to fix, but once it's stable, it's stable. For the first three months, there is always the fixing of problems and getting updates.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I am also working with Symantec Endpoint Security. I started using Trend Micro Apex One because Symantec was acquired by another company, and I was looking for a change.

How was the initial setup?

It is not as simple as it appears, but there are numerous options available. They include mobile security, as well as many other features. So you'll need some tricky options such as the use of servers and other such things. It isn't as straightforward as Symantec.

When I use Symantec, it's simple, but Trend Micro has a lot of features, such as DLP, security, cloud sandboxing, and more. It requires the use of three or four servers.

The initial setup and consult will take one or two days, but the deployment for the branches will take five to seven days. In total it can take up to 20 days to move the package.

We have a technical team of two administrators who maintain this solution,

What about the implementation team?

We completed the implementation ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is very high in comparison to EDR, XDR, and MDR. The pricing is quite high.

When compared to Symantec, Kaspersky, and others the price is higher, they are more expensive.

It is possible that it is more expensive because they only provide the solution on-premises.

Licensing fees can be paid yearly or with an option for three years.

We have a three-year perpetual license that is set to expire in May. We are considering renewing the license or exploring other market options.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

My three-year contract expires in May, and I am just looking into other endpoint and EDR solutions.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others.

I would rate Trend Micro Apex One an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Effective zero-day threat detection, good performance, and plenty of features
Pros and Cons
  • "Trend Micro Apex One is good at detecting zero-day threats. When the solution was in operation I did not notice any system performance problems. Upgrades of the solution were simple to do and there are plenty of features."
  • "If certain alerts could be translated into day-to-day English with some action plans, a few points, what to do, and how to do it, that would help me personally as IT Manager. They have some recommendations regarding the vulnerability of the endpoint. They take you to some very technical information and if you are not a security engineer or security-trained you might not understand what they're talking about. We are a small company and it would benefit if things were explained better, we cannot afford a dedicated Trend Micro Apex One engineer."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Trend Micro Apex One for security.

What is most valuable?

Trend Micro Apex One is good at detecting zero-day threats. When the solution was in operation I did not notice any system performance problems. Upgrades of the solution were simple to do and there are plenty of features.

What needs improvement?

Trend Micro Apex One can be at times heavy on resources, but I did not notice any difference as an end-user.

If certain alerts could be translated into day-to-day English with some action plans, a few points, what to do, and how to do it, that would help me personally as IT Manager. They have some recommendations regarding the vulnerability of the endpoint. They take you to some very technical information and if you are not a security engineer or security-trained you might not understand what they're talking about. We are a small company and it would benefit if things were explained better, we cannot afford a dedicated Trend Micro Apex One engineer.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Trend Micro Apex One for approximately eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution has been stable. We have not had any problems with ransomware or anything else.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We are a small company and I am not sure how scalable it is. It has worked fine in our usage.

We have approximately 200 endpoints.

How are customer service and support?

I have not contacted the support from Trend Micro.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have used other solutions in the past, such as Kaspersky, but we currently are migrating to a Microsoft solution. Since we use many Microsoft solutions and wanted to consolidate the organization it seemed like the natural thing to do to move from Trend Micro Apex One to Microsoft.

How was the initial setup?

The installation of Trend Micro Apex One is straightforward. Once we added the endpoints to the console the installation was not problematic in any way.

I would rate the migration and implementation of Trend Micro Apex One a five out of five.

What about the implementation team?

We receive weekly maintenance reports. If we receive any report of something causing issues for us here in the IT department, we look into the issue, but I do not remember the last time we had any alerts.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of Trend Micro Apex One was reasonable. There is a license required to use the solution and we have upgraded the solution to include some additional features, such as XDR.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

When evaluating Trend Micro Apex One and Microsoft Defender I didn't find any major differences. The benefit of Microsoft Defender is it is well integrated with Azure, Intune, and other Microsoft solutions. Trend Micro is not as straightforward where everything is in place.

What other advice do I have?

I didn't have any hands-on experience with another system to compare the metrics too. However, I have found the solution to work well.

Trend Micro Apex One gives you a lot of features. You will make good use of it if you have somebody who can attend to the dashboards and do deep security scans. In larger organizations, you would have somebody dedicated and well-trained to oversee the solution. It is important and an advantage to have somebody well-trained and who can receive the value from the information they are able to provide. Otherwise, it will be similar to what we are doing. The solution is sitting on the endpoint, and we are happy that we are not being infected.

I rate Trend Micro Apex One an eight out of ten.

Provides good protection, is simple to use, has a user-friendly interface, and is reasonably priced
Pros and Cons
  • "One of the better features, in my opinion, is that it also makes use of a web reputation. For example, if someone accidentally clicks on a link in an email that leads to a malicious website, they will block it."
  • "It is very easy to use."
  • "The only thing that I would like to see changed or improved in the next release is when it reports C&C callbacks, to make it easier to trace, to see what's doing that, whether it's a program checking for updates or a malicious program."

What is our primary use case?

Trend Micro Apex One was an upgrade for a desktop virus scanner, web reputation, and a firewall.

What is most valuable?

It is very easy to use.

One of the better features, in my opinion, is that it also makes use of a web reputation. For example, if someone accidentally clicks on a link in an email that leads to a malicious website, they will block it.

The interface is good.

It's an excellent product for a desktop.

What needs improvement?

The only improvement I can see is that it occasionally warns us about callbacks, and there's almost no way to trace it back other than a Windows service, making it difficult to completely eliminate it, or know what program is creating the callback.

The only thing that I would like to see changed or improved in the next release is when it reports C&C callbacks, to make it easier to trace, to see what's doing that, whether it's a program checking for updates or a malicious program. At this time, all it says is that it's a C&C callback and then traces back to a Windows Service.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Trend Micro Apex One for approximately 20 years.

We upgraded to Apex One, between four and six months ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Trend Micro Apex One is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Trend Micro Apex One is very scalable.

It's on everyone's desktop on their computers.

We don't have any plans to increase our usage.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we used the OfficeScan version.

We are currently using Carbon Black as well.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward.

We gradually upgraded everyone from the previous version to the new version. If I add up all of the time we spent getting everything done, it probably took us a couple of weeks.

There are two of us that manage this solution as well as Carbon Black.

What about the implementation team?

We completed the installation in-house.

What was our ROI?

We have never calculated the ROI. It may be difficult to calculate, but all it has to do is keep you safe once or twice and it has paid for itself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is good.

Licensing fees are paid on a yearly basis.

If I remember correctly, the cost is approximately four and a half thousand per year.

There are no additional fees.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Trend Micro Apex One a nine out of ten.

The cloud model allowed us to decommission our servers and consolidate
Pros and Cons
  • "Before Apex One, we used OfficeScan, which Trend Micro acquired, but it was on-prem. We were managing three or four anti-virus solutions. Apex One's cloud model allowed us to decommission the on-prem servers and consolidate. We get all the same features, and everything is upgraded automatically, so we only need to use the software."
  • "I don't give it a perfect 10 because of the Active Directory integration. It would make things easier if the Active Directory were integrated more seamlessly."

What is our primary use case?

We use Apex One for endpoint security on our laptops, desktops, etc.

How has it helped my organization?

Before Apex One, we used OfficeScan, which Trend Micro acquired, but it was on-prem. We were managing three or four anti-virus solutions. Apex One's cloud model allowed us to decommission the on-prem servers and consolidate. We get all the same features, and everything is upgraded automatically, so we only need to use the software.

For how long have I used the solution?

Trend Micro only launched Apex One maybe two or three years ago, and we've been using it for about a year or so.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Apex One is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Apex One is scalable.

How was the initial setup?

Setting up Apex One was straightforward. When we moved from on-prem OfficeScan to Apex One, that migration was also smooth. We didn't need to do much. Usually, on-prem to cloud migration takes a lot of research and planning. Apex One installation is practically automatic, so it didn't take that much effort. We migrated the endpoints from on-prem to the cloud without much manual work.

What about the implementation team?

We had the help of an integrator. Our in-house team has about eight to 10 people plus Trend Micro's account manager and the integrator.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We renew our license for Apex One annually.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Trend Micro Apex One nine out of 10. I don't give it a perfect 10 because of the Active Directory integration. It would make things easier if the Active Directory were integrated more seamlessly.

Solid endpoint security with zero-day vulnerability.
Pros and Cons
  • "The features that I have found most valuable are the endpoint security with the zero-day vulnerability, and they have an on-premise sandboxing solution which prevents any of those zero-day vulnerability issues."
  • "The main thing they need to improve is their reporting functionality and the forensics for their on-premise consult. They do not have very good reporting features or forensic functionality in the on-premise version. They need to improve that."
  • "Their support needs to be improved. We need to wait for a long time to get even a quick fix - this needs to be addressed on the Trend Micro side."

What is our primary use case?

We are using the Trend Micro Apex One in two scenarios. One is for endpoint security and the other is for endpoint management. We are also using the restricting USB tool, taxes, and application control.

What is most valuable?

The features that I have found most valuable are the endpoint security with the zero-day vulnerability. They have an on-premise sandboxing solution which prevents any of those zero-day vulnerability issues.

What needs improvement?

The main thing they need to improve is their reporting functionality and the forensics for their on-premise consult. They do not have very good reporting features or forensic functionality in the on-premise version. They need to improve that. They have a cloud version called Trend Micro XDR. It has that functionality, but they do not have that kind of thing on the on-premise solution.

The things I would like to see improved in future releases are better price and support, and the reporting functionality in the on-premise solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Trend Micro Apex One for a very long time. We are a long-term customer with Trend Micro - more than five years. We have the latest version of Trend Micro on-premise with EDR support.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable, that is why we are a long-term customer. Right?

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Trend Micro Apex One is scalable.

We have approximately 1,500 plus users using it and we require only two people to manage it.

In terms of increasing usage, that depends on the number of employees. We are marginally increasing this year by year. It all depends on the business bracket.

How are customer service and support?

Their support needs to be improved. We need to wait for a long time to get even a quick fix -  this needs to be addressed on the Trend Micro side. Their support is not as good as expected. The people are knowledgeable but they take a long time.

How was the initial setup?

I cannot tell you exactly if it was straightforward or not because it was very long back that we installed it. At that time we faced some issues because we needed to identify what was missing. Those kinds of issues were there, and slowly, we sorted that out.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented with a Trend Micro implementation partner.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Previously, we had the three years package. Now, we are just renewing every year.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Apex One to other people. But it is a little bit of a pricey product. If they are able to pay this costly price, then definitely, I can recommend it.

On a scale of one to ten, I would give Trend Micro Apex One an eight.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Responsive technical support, plenty of features, and high performance
Pros and Cons
  • "Some of the valuable features of Trend Micro Apex One are DLP, encryption, and patch management."
  • "Trend Micro has an edge over other solutions in technical support because they have local support."
  • "All the features in Trend Micro Apex One are not compatible or functional for all the different operating systems. For example, they have fewer features in other operating systems compared to what they have for Microsoft Windows. It would be nice if they could have one solution which all functions work on all kinds of operating systems. It would be much easier for those who have different operating systems in their environment to have one solution."

What is most valuable?

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Trend Micro Apex One for approximately three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable with high performance.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Trend Micro Apex One is scalable.

We have approximately eight customers using this solution.

There are is a total of between 100 and 200 users using the solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

Trend Micro has an edge over other solutions in technical support because they have local support.

How was the initial setup?

The installation is very easy and quick, it takes approximately five to six hours to complete.

What about the implementation team?

We have one technician that deals with the implementation and maintenance of the solution. However, if you are going to implement the solution in an enterprise-level company then you will need a team of two to three.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have evaluated other solutions, such as Kaspersky.

Integrates well, stable, scalable, and has good support
Pros and Cons
  • "The main benefit is the threat intelligence network of Trend Micro."
  • "We are very satisfied with Trend Micro products, and the main benefit is the threat intelligence network of Trend Micro, which checks all signatures to ensure they are the latest and most up-to-date with the latest vulnerabilities and integrates well with different products."
  • "The DLP model needs improvement."
  • "The integration needs to be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution as our endpoint security solution.

What is most valuable?

We are very satisfied with Trend Micro products.

The main benefit is the threat intelligence network of Trend Micro. It is very good.

It checks all signatures to ensure they are the latest and most up-to-date with the latest vulnerabilities.

The threat intelligence network is very good in Trend Micro.

It integrates well with different products. We are currently using three or four different versions of this endpoint. We use it in the security sector, we use Deep Security and it is working very well.

What needs improvement?

The integration needs to be improved. We are using the IDLP models and DLP models.

When integrating we are having some issues with the customization of our DLP policies.

The DLP model needs improvement. When compared to other market DLP products it is not as strong.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Trend Micro Apex One since 2018. Prior to this, it was known as OfficeScan.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Trend Micro Apex One is quite stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable product.

We are an enterprise business with approximately 1300 endpoint users.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is fine. When we raised issues or complaints they would respond and resolve the issues in a timely fashion.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Earlier, I was working with OfficeScan, which was the previous brand.

We also use Trend Micro Endpoint, and Trend Micro Deep Discovery Inspector, and Deep Security.

I have been using Trend Micro Endpoint for the last five years.

With Trend Micro Deep Security and Trend Micro Apex One, the use cases are different. One is directly designed for server security and the other is for endpoint devices, which are mostly Windows 10 and Windows 8.

We are using Deep Security for our server and Apex One for our endpoints.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Trend Micro Apex One is easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

From a commercial aspect, it is a bit higher compared to other market products.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Trend Micro Apex One a nine out of ten.

Feature-rich, easy to install, has good performance and good support
Pros and Cons
  • "Trend Micro Apex One has good features and is lightweight."
  • "Trend Micro has very aggressive pricing, but it is also very good."
  • "There are some things that could make Trend Micro Apex One better. They could improve the integration with Active Directory."

What is our primary use case?

We have 1,000 machines or endpoints that we need to protect. We use Apex One to protect them.

What is most valuable?

Trend Micro Apex One has good features and is lightweight.

It has good performance.

When I compare it with other solutions, it's good. There are no other features that I haven't been able to find.

What needs improvement?

There are some things that could make Trend Micro Apex One better.

They could improve the integration with Active Directory.

As Apex One has its own structure it is very difficult to click on files. Once integrated, it can import the OE structure of the Active Directory. It will make it very easy to click on files and get back to control.

We also use the device control, which is host named. I have to either lock or allow a hostname. By default, it is locked. For example, USB access and drive access will be blocked in the organization. If you need to allow some endpoints, we have to allow that particular hostname. Now anybody can log in to that host and use that USB access, but it should be user-based.

I would suggest that Trend Micro Web Proxy, TMWS a proxy solution that has a separate function integrate into one single agent.

Currently, you have one endpoint with one agent for the anti-malware DLP and another agent, for the proxy. If they could integrate both into a single agent. That would be great.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using OfficeScan for the last six years.

Apex One was previously OfficeScan.

We are using the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Overall, the product is good. I don't have any issues with the stability of Trend Micro Apex One.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have contacted technical support several times.

Technical support is good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Earlier I was using McAfee and changed to Trend Micro Apex One. McAfee was also very good but Trend Micro provides more features and is more lightweight.

We are in the process of implementing XDR.

How was the initial setup?

The installation process was not much of a challenge.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Trend Micro has very aggressive pricing, but it is also very good. It is one of the reasons we chose to use Trend Micro.

What other advice do I have?

If you are looking to use this solution, I would definitely recommend it, especially if you are not satisfied with the solution that you are currently using.

I would rate Trend Micro Apex One a nine out of ten.

Straightforward to set up, knowledgeable support, and the web reputation and user behavior monitoring features help to mitigate careless user actions
Pros and Cons
  • "We really like the ability to have different policies to keep servers and endpoints unique to their own policy."
  • "Apex One has streamlined our AV."
  • "I'd like to see the different interface components combined into one, or be allowed to get to the agent management portion without having to log into the main console."

What is our primary use case?

We use Apex One for Antivirus only.

Our company currently has more than 8,500 machines with the Apex One agent installed, including servers and workstations. We are a 100% Microsoft Windows environment.

Being a financial institution, data integrity is paramount to keeping our customers' information safe, as well as the well-being of the bank. We use the Apex One web console to review logs and triage any infections that may be occurring or that have occurred.

We really like the ability to have different policies to keep servers and endpoints unique to their own policy.

How has it helped my organization?

Apex One has streamlined our AV. We use the SaaS instance in the cloud.

We use real-time scans, manual and scheduled scans for viruses, malware, grayware, ransomware, etc. We also use other modules like Behavior monitoring and predictive machine learning, malicious web tracking, and blocking.

We were previously using the Trend Micro OfficeScan antivirus product, so it was only natural that we upgraded to the Apex One product when we decided to upgrade. The SaaS instance in the cloud was right for us.

What is most valuable?

We really have found the web reputation monitoring and the behavior monitoring portions to be highly valuable. These modules really cut down on careless user impact.

Behavior monitoring keeps ransomware from taking hold.

Real-time scans also monitor files as they are accessed, downloaded, sent, etc.

We have our environment set up to alert our security department not only when endpoints are infected, but for anything that is considered a low risk that may need further investigation.

A daily check of the logs helps us keep an eye on those things.

What needs improvement?

The console is divided into two parts. One for the policy and configuration, another for agent management. I'd like to see the different interface components combined into one, or be allowed to get to the agent management portion without having to log into the main console.

Another item that I would like to see change is the fact that, on occasion, the console will be updated and items that I once knew the location of have moved to a different location. I would like to see a model where we are alerted to the changes as they happen.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Trend Micro Apex One for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, we have no complaints. We have had zero downtime with our SaaS instance.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

From what I've seen, we would have no issue adding more policies, endpoints, etc. to our environment.

How are customer service and technical support?

Our account manager and lead tech were essential in setting this up and getting everything the way we needed. They were quick to answer our questions and very knowledgeable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were an OfficeScan portion, which was rebranded and upgraded to Apex One.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward.

Go to the site, answer a few questions and within five minutes, you're up and running.

What about the implementation team?

We did the work in-house, with support from our Trend team if needed.

What was our ROI?

Our ROI is yet to be determined, as we have not had the product long enough.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The SaaS version is competitively priced and amazingly easy to set up.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated CrowdStrike, Carbon Black, and FireEye.

What other advice do I have?

We have really had a good experience so far with Apex One.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Reasonably priced, good anti-malware, stable, and scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "Along with the anti-malware, it has a built-in device control and DLP."
  • "The product is very good; it's stable, and if you are not looking for a cloud based proxy then you should go for Trend Micro."
  • "It should have a single agent as competitors are offering."
  • "The only concern that I have is with Trend Micro not having Cloud Proxy integrated into the same agent and the same console."

What is most valuable?

It's a good product. The software is good.

We have not been faced with any issues as far as antivirus, or anti-malware is concerned.

Along with the anti-malware, it has a built-in device control and DLP. We have been using that and found it to be very useful.

Previously, we were using OfficeScan and now it is Apex Central. The Smart Scan feature and the update frequency have improved. The antivirus updates used to be once or twice a day, now it's in real-time. Every two hours there is a new definition or there is a new pack, which is a good thing.

We also like that it has Advanced Threat Protection because it is a good feature.

What needs improvement?

The driving force behind Trend Micro is not wanting two different agents on the same machine. If the cloud proxy could be on the same agent, it would increase our footprint on the client machine. Instead of running two agents, we think it would be better to run a single one.

The only concern that I have is with Trend Micro not having Cloud Proxy integrated into the same agent and the same console.

They have two different products, Cloud Proxy, and Anti-malware with DLP, which the only reason we are considering replacing it.

It should have a single agent, as competitors are offering.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Trend Micro Apex One for four and a half years.

Presently, the version we are using is Apex Central.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This product is quite stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Trend Micro Apex One is very much scalable.

We have 1,000 licenses.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Trend Micro, we were using McAfee.

We switched because of the price difference. There is a huge price difference between Trend Micro and McAfee.

What about the implementation team?

Our local partners deployed this solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are not required to buy new licenses. The existing licenses will expire and we have to renew the license.

The issue is that we have requested a web proxy, cloud proxy feature, but the cloud proxy, with Trend Micro, has a different console, it's a different agent.

But I understand other competitors like CrowdStrike and Sophos, have a single agent for anti-malware that includes the DLP, the device control, and the cloud proxy.

The price for Trend Micro is reasonable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Because it is time for renewal, I have been evaluating other solutions to see if I should stay with Trend Micro or if I should replace it. We are evaluating products such as Crowdstrike, Sophos, and Cloud Proxy, but the prices are quite high.

What other advice do I have?

The product is very good. It's stable, and if you are not looking for a cloud based proxy then you should go for Trend Micro. The pricing is very good, but Cloud proxy pricing is very high.

I would rate Trend Micro Apex One a nine out of ten.
