Reasonably priced, good anti-malware, stable, and scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "Along with the anti-malware, it has a built-in device control and DLP."
  • "The product is very good; it's stable, and if you are not looking for a cloud based proxy then you should go for Trend Micro."
  • "It should have a single agent as competitors are offering."
  • "The only concern that I have is with Trend Micro not having Cloud Proxy integrated into the same agent and the same console."

What is most valuable?

It's a good product. The software is good.

We have not been faced with any issues as far as antivirus, or anti-malware is concerned.

Along with the anti-malware, it has a built-in device control and DLP. We have been using that and found it to be very useful.

Previously, we were using OfficeScan and now it is Apex Central. The Smart Scan feature and the update frequency have improved. The antivirus updates used to be once or twice a day, now it's in real-time. Every two hours there is a new definition or there is a new pack, which is a good thing.

We also like that it has Advanced Threat Protection because it is a good feature.

What needs improvement?

The driving force behind Trend Micro is not wanting two different agents on the same machine. If the cloud proxy could be on the same agent, it would increase our footprint on the client machine. Instead of running two agents, we think it would be better to run a single one.

The only concern that I have is with Trend Micro not having Cloud Proxy integrated into the same agent and the same console.

They have two different products, Cloud Proxy, and Anti-malware with DLP, which the only reason we are considering replacing it.

It should have a single agent, as competitors are offering.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Trend Micro Apex One for four and a half years.

Presently, the version we are using is Apex Central.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This product is quite stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Trend Micro Apex One is very much scalable.

We have 1,000 licenses.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Trend Micro, we were using McAfee.

We switched because of the price difference. There is a huge price difference between Trend Micro and McAfee.

What about the implementation team?

Our local partners deployed this solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are not required to buy new licenses. The existing licenses will expire and we have to renew the license.

The issue is that we have requested a web proxy, cloud proxy feature, but the cloud proxy, with Trend Micro, has a different console, it's a different agent.

But I understand other competitors like CrowdStrike and Sophos, have a single agent for anti-malware that includes the DLP, the device control, and the cloud proxy.

The price for Trend Micro is reasonable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Because it is time for renewal, I have been evaluating other solutions to see if I should stay with Trend Micro or if I should replace it. We are evaluating products such as Crowdstrike, Sophos, and Cloud Proxy, but the prices are quite high.

What other advice do I have?

The product is very good. It's stable, and if you are not looking for a cloud based proxy then you should go for Trend Micro. The pricing is very good, but Cloud proxy pricing is very high.

I would rate Trend Micro Apex One a nine out of ten.

Good technical support with a great complexity and the capability to scale
Pros and Cons
  • "We've found the technical support to be very helpful overall."
  • "We believe in the solution and we see the value in it."
  • "The solution should adjust its pricing for the smaller market we are in."
  • "The solution should adjust its pricing for the smaller market we are in."

What is our primary use case?

Next month, we will implement the solution as our own primary endpoint solution. Currently, we have clients that are using it for the same purpose.

What is most valuable?

We've just started the distribution of Trend Micro Products. We're at the start of the process. However, it's my understanding that it is a very complete solution.

With the DLP addition, it's quite a good product.

The complexity of the product is very good. It has a lot of features. It covers many items and different parts of intrusions.

The solution can scale quite well.

We've found the technical support to be very helpful overall.

What needs improvement?

We're still in the early stages of using the solution. We need more time to do some installations and work with the product to really be able to evaluate it completely.

We had some challenges with the initial setup.

The solution should adjust its pricing for the smaller market we are in.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've only been using the solution for about six months - or half a year. We haven't used the solution for that long just yet.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very easy to scale and quite flexible. If a company needs to scale, it can do so with ease.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have our own global distributor, a local provider, and they have some technical personnel that covers the lower level of support queries. For a big issue, we contact the Trend Micro team directly.

It's very easy to contact both. They are very quick and responsive, They are quite knowledgeable and helpful. We're very satisfied with the level of service we are provided with.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup can be difficult. We had some issues, however, we worked with a local provider here in Bulgaria, and successfully performed this type of installation previously.

What about the implementation team?

We had the assistance of a local provider that was well trained in implementation. They sorted out any problems we had and helped us set everything up. We were very satisfied with the results.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have a small market in Bulgaria and the price is always the leading issue and the leading decision point. Trend Micro is a big vendor, one of the best vendors, in my opinion. For a couple of years they've been in the top three and top five as an antivirus solution. Therefore, the quality comes at a price. I try to explain to our customers and our clients that they are paying for quality. That said, due to the fact that Bulgaria is such a small market, the pricing doesn't match the expectations.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I am currently comparing this solution with ESET.

What other advice do I have?

We are both a distributor of this product as well as a customer.

I'd recommend the solution to other companies. We don't just offer it to clients. We use it ourselves. We believe in the solution. We see the value in it.

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten. Although there are some improvements to be made, it's a very complete product with good flexibility and a good level of flexibility.

Can be used to easily update policies on the cloud
Pros and Cons
  • "I'm using the cloud solution, which I really like. I like being able to update policies on the cloud so that when users who are working from home connect to the internet, their laptops will be updated automatically. I also like that this solution is easy to use and is stable and scalable"
  • "Trend Micro Apex One has enabled us to easily update policies on the cloud so that they will be drilled down or updated automatically on the laptops when the users connect to the internet."
  • "More integration with different platforms would be great, as everyone seems to want the solution to integrate with each team."
  • "More integration with different platforms would be great, as everyone seems to want the solution to integrate with each team."

What is our primary use case?

We currently have limited users, less than 100. We have found it difficult to manage users who are working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Trend Micro Apex One has been a good option to update policies. I change the policy on the cloud so that it will be drilled down or updated automatically on the laptops when the users connect to the internet.

How has it helped my organization?

It has been very useful, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when so many users are working from home. Trend Micro Apex One has enabled us to easily update policies on the cloud so that they will be drilled down or updated automatically on the laptops when the users connect to the internet.

What is most valuable?

I'm using the cloud solution, which I really like. I like being able to update policies on the cloud so that when users who are working from home connect to the internet, their laptops will be updated automatically. I also like that this solution is easy to use and is stable and scalable.

In the case of ransomware files, artificial intelligence is used in some places to start encrypting the files. I like the fact that Trend Micro Apex One has an option to restart the process and back up the files that are being encrypted.

What needs improvement?

More integration with different platforms would be great, as everyone seems to want the solution to integrate with each team.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for a couple of years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I feel that it is a stable solution that is easy to use as well.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I think Trend Micro Apex One is scalable. Right now, we have limited users, under 100.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have been using Symantec End-User Endpoint Security and added Trend Micro Apex One to our environment.

How was the initial setup?

Installation is very simple when a web portal is available. You can log in and create the policy. The initial setup process took about one to two hours.

What about the implementation team?

I was able to implement it myself with the help of the vendor.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The setup is easy, and if your servers are managed on the cloud, you won't need to hire additional staff for deployment and maintenance.

What other advice do I have?

On a scale of one to ten, I would rate Trend Micro Apex One at nine. If you are looking for a data solution along with the end point, this would be an option to consider.

Also, Trend Micro Apex One has DLP options.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

An easy initial setup with good technical support and great security
Pros and Cons
  • "Technical support is quite knowledgeable and helpful."
  • "Trend Micro in that sense is a very good product as it allows us to have access to the database all the time."
  • "The solution could use signatureless detection."
  • "The solution could use signatureless detection."

What is our primary use case?

Trend Micro Apex One is a nine-point security solution from Trend Micro. We primarily use the solution for all of the scanning of our endpoint devices.

What is most valuable?

Trend Micro ensures the number of signatures is updated on time. If you have updated versions of signatures, they are built into the database quickly without wasting time.

If you don't update your database in real-time, the problem is there can be zero-day exploits. Hackers or malicious attacks might get through. Trend Micro in that sense is a very good product as it allows us to have access to the database all the time. The security is excellent. That is the most valuable aspect.

Technical support is quite knowledgeable and helpful.

What needs improvement?

The solution could use signatureless detection.

The EDR capabilities should be built into the solution. In my opinion, the native endpoint product should have the capability of EDR also. The product should be capable of actually building some behavior-based analytics so that it can actually detect signature lists.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for about three months. However, I had been using a previous version of the solution, known as Office Scan, for the last two or three years or so.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

We currently have 2,000 users on the solution.

We intend to increase usage in the future.

How are customer service and technical support?

We've reached out to technical support in the past and we've always gotten the help we needed. We're satisfied with the level of support we receive.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn't previously use a different solution. We've always used Trend Micro.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex. It's pretty straightforward.

The deployment doesn't take much time, however, it depends on the size of the organization. It's very slow to deploy the product to multiple clients. If your organization has a 10,000 user base, sit will take longer than if you have a 2,000 user base. It just varies according to the number of machines to which it will actually be deployed.

We have about 2,000 users and we have a team of three or four people that handle maintenance.

What about the implementation team?

I am the security manager on the end solution security team in the organization. The deployment was actually done by the IT team within my team. We didn't need the assistance of consultants or integrators.

What other advice do I have?

We're just a customer.

On a scale from one to ten, I would rate this solution at a nine. It's been very good. We've been happy with the results so far.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Advanced all-in-one endpoint security
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup was very straightforward."
  • "Trend Micro is both scalable and stable."
  • "They should include easy-to-use connectors to make it easier to connect to SIEM."
  • "They should include easy-to-use connectors to make it easier to connect to SIEM."

What is our primary use case?

We use Trend Micro to build our entire, CI/CD pipeline. In short, I check out the code from my VCS (Version Control System), then I run a static code analysis as the first job in the pipeline.

From that point onward, I can do multiple scans in multiple environments. For example, I can have the code checkout from my Dev environment, run the static code analysis, then I can do a folder scan. I perform the scan in my Dev environment, in the integration environment, and in the UAP environment. These are the multiple scans that you can run and enter on your application.

All the static code analysis is on the application-side, and the rest of the workflows can be triggered in several places throughout the pipeline and on the infrastructure side as well. I can use it to do VAPT (vulnerability assessment and penetration testing) throughout the entire pipeline.

Broadly speaking, it means adopting the DevOps culture of Trend Micro. DevOps culture is well adopted in Trend Micro. It's very comparable to Prisma Cloud. Palo Alto has recently informed me about their Prisma Cloud offering regarding CI/CD deployment.

We develop and deploy the CI/CD pipeline in the free workflow, using various tools like GitLab.

Palo Alto is a big competitor of Trend Micro.

Within our organization, there are roughly 1,000 plus users, using Trend Micro.

We definitely plan on using Trend Micro in the future. They are one of our preferred vendors, along with Forescout.

Forescout handles the initial stages of threat discovery and it integrates with SIEM.

If we are going to continue with Trend Micro as our endpoint security solution, then we need to have a SIEM solution, like IBM QRadar, ArcSight, Forescout, Micro Focus ArcSight.

What needs improvement?

Trend Micro does region-based scanning — the threats are shown in different regions.

I did some workshops based on tracking zero-day vulnerabilities, etc.

Trend Micro's coverage and scans can be broadened to encompass different types of classified threats based on different parameters.

For example, say I want to filter out all of the threats in The United States. In this case, I will see the US region and I will see the number of threats that are present on my infrastructure. This is referred to as threat intelligence.

When I was in this workshop, the filters always recommend that we start with the region as a first parameter. Once you get into the region (the US region), you might look at the different data centers within the US, then within the different data centers, you can drill down on the folder — on the number of hosts.

The host can then be extracted from the region and the region can be marked red. Red means there are a lot of vulnerabilities in a particular region. If Multiple hosts have multiple vulnerabilities, then the entire region will be marked red. Trend Micro somewhat shows this on their dashboard. In other words, the parameters should be improved, including zero-day filtering.

They should include easy-to-use connectors to make it easier to connect to SIEM. The integration environment has to be available so it can easily connect to SIEM.

Also, you should be able to perform more scans.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Trend Micro for two years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Trend Micro is both scalable and stable.

How are customer service and technical support?

We are satisfied with the technical support. They are available 24/7.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward. I did the installation by myself.

Regarding deployment topologies, whether it's on-premises, a hybrid cloud, or a public or private cloud, installation is quite easy. It will be up and running within a couple of hours.

Once we deployed it, we had to connect the console to the dashboard. Once the dashboard was up and running, we could filter out threats by connecting to the Trend Micro Data Security Operations Center, which has a threat intelligence ability that highlights all of the threats. The data comes from the CMDB database and It shows us the CVS4 of each threat.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you buy Trend Micro, you will also need to purchase a SIEM solution which is often quite expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I would definitely recommend Trend Micro to other potential users.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Trend Micro a rating of eight.

Good as a general anti-virus but needs more depth and sophistication
Pros and Cons
  • "The general anti-virus on offer is the solution's most valuable aspect."
  • "The solution is very stable; it doesn't crash or freeze, there aren't bugs or glitches, and we find it to be very reliable at all times."
  • "We're actually looking to upgrade to more sophisticated ADL products. We need a more sophisticated endpoint. We need to have the ability to automate those instant response processes."
  • "OfficeScan offers basic anti-virus security, but if you're looking for more advanced security features, you really need to look at more sophisticated and modern services."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for our endpoints. We do occasionally use it for some servers as well.

What is most valuable?

The general anti-virus on offer is the solution's most valuable aspect.

What needs improvement?

We're actually looking to upgrade to more sophisticated ADL products. We need a more sophisticated endpoint. We need to have the ability to automate those instant response processes.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for about a decade. It's been about ten years at least.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. It doesn't crash or freeze. There aren't bugs or glitches. We find it to be very reliable at all times.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have between one and 2,000 users on the solution at any given time.

We haven't needed to scale up in the past few years, so I can't speak to its ability to do so.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have a separate team in-house that handles tickets, therefore, I've never been directly in touch with technical support myself. I can't speak to the level of service they provide.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Since I have been working at the organization, the company has always used Trend Micro. I don't know if they used anything else prior to that. That said, we use a number of other services as security in depth. We have other gateways and firewalls and a bunch of other items that we use.

How was the initial setup?

I wasn't part of the team that implemented the solution. I wouldn't be able to say if it was complex or straightforward.

It's pretty low-maintenance. We do continuous updates and we also update the backend security appliance that goes with it, which probably happens three or four times a year.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The costs of the service fluctuate for us; I can't really say how much it costs our organization in general. I do know that it's not expensive. cost-wise, it's on the lower end of the spectrum. The licensing we have is all-inclusive; there aren't any extra costs involved. If we decide to stay with Trend Micro and upgrade to a better service, we'll be paying a higher price.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We're currently looking for another solution that may be a bit more sophisticated than Trend Micro, so we are currently evaluating other options. We're down to two or three other vendors. Those we've looked at include an upgraded Trend product, Microsoft Defender ATP, XDR, Crowdstrike and MacAfee.

Some of the other products give the capability of virtual sandboxing, endpoint threat detection, automated response, that kind of service.

What other advice do I have?

We're just a customer. We don't have a business relationship with Trend Micro. We're using the latest version of the solution.

OfficeScan offers basic anti-virus security, but if you're looking for more advanced security features, you really need to look at more sophisticated and modern services.

I'd rate the solution five out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Antivirus and Malware scanning with reporting that allows you to report back with information
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are reporting and where we have the ability to report back and provide information when an item is quarantined or not quarantined."
  • "Every solution has its problems, but it is a solid product."
  • "The CPU usage when scanning is too high and we have run into bottlenecks were it consumes a lot of CPU time."
  • "We spent the last two months chasing ghosts and trying to troubleshoot. It was frustrating."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case is for antivirus, and antimalware scans.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are reporting and where we have the ability to report back and provide information when an item is quarantined or not quarantined.

What needs improvement?

The CPU usage when scanning stays too high and we have run into bottlenecks where Apex One consumes a lot of CPU cycles.

The on-premises set up is daunting.

It's been five years of this where they (Microsoft) have two updates a year, sometimes three. By now Trend Micro should have come up with a solution where they don't have us block the updates and wait for them to be fixed.

There are times where Trend applies an update and that update doesn't fully apply. We then have to go in and run a manual VBS file that they have provided to us to do a proper uninstall of the application which is painful to do as we have a huge distributed workforce and many remote users. It isn't always easy to chase down remote users.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the Trend Micro product line for at least five years. The Apex One is their newest incarnation, which we have been using for the last year.

It seems to be an evolution of their current platform.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability of this solution a seven or seven and a half out of ten. We had several issues where it had crippled user's machines and we had to uninstall and reinstall the application to get it working. We have had to hold Windows updates. I think that it is the fault of the Microsoft deployment strategy. When they release a new feature update you can not deploy it right away. For example, when they go from 1903 to 1909, you have to wait for Trend to apply fixes to the application, otherwise, it won't work.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It seems to scale quite well. We have no issues from that perspective. We are able to onboard all of our users fairly quickly and them online. That was positive.

We have approximately 400 users in our organization.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have had some challenges where sometimes it takes a while to get a solution.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have always been using Trend Micro. We followed them through their evolution from OfficeScan to Office XG to Apex One.

I think with the evolution of Windows 10, and how Microsoft does deployment, it has made using this application a lot more challenging. With the manageability and when Microsoft does an update, we sometimes struggle with the updates because of how they happen.

The result being that Trend will block or pause an update on the Microsoft side and Trend will release the update. We deploy that update but the machine won't get those fixes and doesn't allow the update to happen, so we have to manually troubleshoot the machines, uninstall the app, and do several things to push the Windows update. We have always been playing a game of whack-a-mole with it. This can be extremely frustrating when you have a small IT team.

How was the initial setup?

Initially, we tried to set up on-premises and there were huge pain points. Trend offered us their cloud solution.

We tried the cloud solution and it seemed to work much better.

The on-premises was daunting to set up, as there were a lot of issues and several challenges. We ended with their hosted solution, which addressed many of our pain points.

We had the cloud solution up and running within a day or so. The cloud solution is far quicker because you don't have to do all of the heavy lifting of installing it on-premises and all of those other features.

We have an IT team with five of us to maintain this solution, but it's generally done by two individuals.

What other advice do I have?

It seems like there is a disconnect between the Trend Micro Team and Microsoft. Microsoft is constantly pushing updates and builds, and there is a delay from the Trend side when updates are released.

As of now when we start reading that Microsoft's finalizing a build we start scrambling and reading Trend Micro blogs trying to figure out if it supports it.

Every solution has its problems, but It is a solid product. The question becomes one of whether there is value in it for the dollar. Does it do what it needs you to do? Has it been working and providing defense? The answer is yes on those fronts.

They have tried very hard to develop a cohesive product that supports us, that offers the ability to scan for viruses and scan for malware. It doesn't hit everything, but the more that I look at different solutions, no solution is a panacea and a magic bullet, and anyone who tells you there is, is not being truthful.

The question becomes, is the manual work outweighing the value that the solution adds? For us, we can handle the updates but when we started to really have a lot of issues where users, especially now in COVID times, working remotely have their machines crippled by the scans  and taking a long time, chewing up a lot of CPU,  users become frustrated with the solution.  We spent the last two months chasing ghosts and trying to troubleshoot. It was frustrating.

As the leader of our IT organization, I need to ensure the stability and usability of all systems for all users.

I still think that the product has value, but I've just experienced a lot of pain points to realize that it's becoming cyclical for us, and the pain points are becoming too much.

We are in POCs with other products but we may find that they are just as bad and may stick with Trend.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
