How has it helped my organization?

The biggest improvement for us has been we have been more proactive when dealing with issues. We can even head things off before they cause any outages.

What needs improvement?

The biggest issue that I ever had was that the old interface was buggy sometimes. It doesn't always refresh without me logging off and on.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for two years.

We have been able to use the planning feature to consolidate VMs on few hosts and have been able to show savings of several hundred thousands.

      What needs improvement?

      • More insight into the OS and processes rolled into the dashboard natively.
      • Add a way to pull metrics from physical servers.

For how long have I used the solution?

      Two years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

The features most valuable are seeing over allocations and being able to automatically make changes.
      Pros and Cons
      • "Less downtime due to small issues becoming big because we didn't see them, and the VMs are running at their optimal performance."
      • "Like any software I use, I'm looking for the least amount of clicking needed to get to places. If I need to click 10 different windows to get a report, I'm done with the software."

      What is most valuable?

The features most valuable are seeing over allocations, being able to automatically make changes, and determining how much new VMs would allocate resources.

How has it helped my organization?

Basically if there were issues with our VMs, which account for 95% of our environment, we had to wait until one of the techs would look and react to the issue. We can set up triggers to automatically handle these issues before they get any worse.

      What needs improvement?

Like any software I use, I'm looking for the least amount of clicking needed to get to places. If I need to click 10 different windows to get a report, I'm done with the software. This software is very good with this, but there could always be improvements.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using it for about six to eight months now.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Deployment was very easy but I advise reading the manual.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

      No issue with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We've had no issues with scalability yet.

How are customer service and technical support?

      Customer Service:

Customer service is very good. They are knowledgeable about the product. If they don't have the answer they will get someone who has it.

      Technical Support:

I have no complaints about tech support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I did use something else and I was able to get the information I was looking for. If the data I'm looking for is 15 windows away, there's no way I'm using it.

      How was the initial setup?

If you are familiar with the VM product you're using, then setup shouldn't be a problem.

      What about the implementation team?

We went through in-house. Their knowledge was very good.

      What was our ROI?

Less downtime due to small issues becoming big because we didn't see them. Also, the VMs are running at their optimal performance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is a little on the high side but you get what you pay for.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I looked at some others but would like not to put names out there. Just know we though this was the best solution.

What other advice do I have?

This is not a set it and forget product. You will have to look at what is going on and have a plan.

Turbonomic has a user friendly outlook making it easy for consumers to navigate within the web UI.
      Pros and Cons
      • "Turbonomic is helpful in generating a variety of reports, which in most cases act as the baseline for maintenance activities that we carry out within our virtual environment."
      • "Regular upgrades and patching requires a period of getting used to the new environment before getting hands-on with the tool."

      Interesting aspects of Turbonomic:

      1. Turbonomic is helpful in generating a variety of reports. In most cases these reports act as the baseline for maintenance activities that we carry out within our virtual environment.
      2. Turbonomic has a user friendly outlook making it easy for consumers to navigate within the web UI.
      3. I use the 'Plan' tab within Turbonomic to perform capacity planning and trending analysis thereby predicting growth/decline within the virtual infrastructure.
      4. Scheduling reports and creating dashboards (for subsets of the environment) are a few among many features within Turbonomic.

      Areas for improvement:

      1. 'Supply Chain' tab within Turbonomic could be presented differently in an  effort to make it more useful for the customers.
      2. 'Group Management' allows you to create 'Custom Groups' but not all dashboards can be scoped to these 'Custom Groups'.
      3. Regular upgrades and patching requires a period of getting used to the new environment before getting hands-on with the tool.

I look forward to exploiting all the features available within Turbonomic and making our virtual environment stable, resilient, and adaptive.

Provides automation of cluster resource management.
      Pros and Cons
      • "This has saved us a great deal of expenses by better balancing workloads across ESXi hosts."
      • "Reports: Have a wider variety of canned reports ready to go."

      What is most valuable?

Provides automation of cluster resource management.

How has it helped my organization?

This has saved us a great deal of expenses by better balancing workloads across ESXi hosts. This allowed for higher VM densities.

      What needs improvement?

Reports: Have a wider variety of canned reports ready to go.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this for three years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We had a couple of minor version bugs, but support was excellent and quick to address these.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were no issues with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There were no issues with scalability.

How is customer service and technical support?

      Customer Service:

Customer service is excellent and very proactive.

      Technical Support:

Technical support is excellent and very proactive.

      How was the initial setup?

The setup was straightforward and quick.

      What about the implementation team?

The implementation was done in-house with assistance from Turbonomic's engineers.

      What was our ROI?

We achieved an ROI in less than three months.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

      The pricing was very reasonable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

      We considered VMware Operations Manager.

What other advice do I have?

It is an excellent product backed by a fantastic team of technical and customer service staff.

We use it for capacity planning and placement recommendations.
      Pros and Cons
      • "Comparing Turbonomic Support against HPE, VMware, and Cisco, is like comparing heaven and hell."

        What is most valuable?

        • Single pane utilization, reporting on UCS, 3PAR, and VMware
        • Capacity planning
        • Placement recommendations

How has it helped my organization?

Turbonomic's largest impact is that I no longer have to manually monitor VM/host performance across vCenter's and clusters. This has been replaced with a single dashboard, which highlights recommended actions and reasons.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution since 2014.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

I had one upgrade fail. I called support and it appeared to be a one-off problem. They had it fixed within 24 hours. This has been my one and only support call since deploying the application.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I never had issues with stability. It just works!

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I'm monitoring 6 UCS Domains, 5 vCenter servers, 23 ESXi clusters spanning 115 hosts, and over 900 VMs in six countries. This little appliance has no issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

        Customer Service:

I've had very pleasant experiences with customer service. Everyone with whom I have spoken has been prompt and knowledgeable.

        Technical Support:

I've only had one support call and it was a great. Comparing Turbonomic Support against HPE, VMware, and Cisco, is like comparing heaven and hell.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We evaluated SolarWinds Virtualization Manager. It was chaotic and took too much effort to truly see what was going on within the environment.

        How was the initial setup?

I think my six year old son could deploy it.

        What about the implementation team?

        The implementation was done in-house.

        What was our ROI?

I have never measured the ROI, but I would expect it to be massive since problem resolutions have decreased significantly.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Negotiate and analyze how you want to use the product (automate/analyze/both) and which systems you report against. You don't need to monitor all of your systems. I have a lot of small, remote locations that have two hosts and under 10 VMs, and it is not worth spending money for those sites. Let VMWare HA/DRS handle it, because you are probably not going to run into performance or scalability issues.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated vROps and SolarWinds Virtual Manager.

What other advice do I have?

Do a 30-day demo and actually use the product. You will quickly see how good or bad of a VMware admin you are.

If you use 3PAR, EMC, NetApp, and/or UCS, this will be invaluable to you, especially if you have junior staff.

It is a great way to give them visibility into those environments without granting them access.

Our clusters are more balanced now than relying on DRS to manage workloads.
        Pros and Cons
        • "This tool offers us the best mechanism we have had so far to implement this effort."
        • "Have plan data shared across user accounts within Turbonomic. Also more granular permissions."

        What is most valuable?

We have benefited from both the workload placement and analysis of our hosts via running plans. Soon we will embark on rightsizing. This tool offers us the best mechanism we have had so far to implement this effort.

How has it helped my organization?

Our clusters are more balanced now than relying on DRS to manage workloads. Also, with the plan data, we are able to have actual data behind what our clusters look like now, how to best optimize them, and if we can afford to remove hosts. This will help us run an efficient, high performing environment while also limiting out licensing costs.

        What needs improvement?

Have plan data shared across user accounts within Turbonomic. Also more granular permissions. We would benefit greatly from more flexibility than the current roles available. Finally, reduce the time to have the efficiency data repopulate into the GUI.

For how long have I used the solution?

        Less than one year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

        No.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

        No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

        No.

How is customer service and technical support?

        Customer Service:

9/10. I have received prompt and quality service.

        Technical Support:

9/10. I have received prompt and quality service.

        How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was with the "appliance" package but we decided to migrate to a RHEL server. Both the setup and migration were documented well and easy to follow.

        What about the implementation team?

Our initial build was done in-house and was followed up with a training session. The trainer was knowledgeable, but we have received a higher level tech advice, as we moved forward, from other resources at Turbonomic.
