It has allowed us to focus less on optimizing VM workloads.

What is most valuable?

The automation piece is one of the most valuable features. It has allowed us to focus less on optimizing VM workloads. Custom dashboard has also been helpful with upper-level management.

How has it helped my organization?

Turbonomics is DRS on steroids. Our clusters have been perfectly balanced.

What needs improvement?

VM level granularity on some of the automation actions such as adding memory/CPU. That would allow an admin to schedule the exact time for the specific action for any given VM.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have had this solution running since mid 2016.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Customer service is fantastic.

Technical Support:

Five stars.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Nothing else in the market can compare.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was very simple. Deploy a simple OVA, give it an IP and sufficient rights, and voila.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented in-house.

What was our ROI?

TBD.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Not sure.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

It continually gives me a solid look at my virtualization environment. It gives me a second set of eyes on our VMs.

What is most valuable?

I like the dashboard. I don't have to search around or create reports for issues or items I should be looking at it. It all just comes to the front.

How has it helped my organization?

It continually gives me a solid look at my virtualization environment. It gives me a second set of eyes on our VMs.

What needs improvement?

The UI is a little dated. I'm not a huge fan of the fact it runs on flash. Something HTML5 based would be nice.

For how long have I used the solution?

About one year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

A little. We run AHV (Acropolis Hypervisor by Nutanix) as our hypervisor, and it took a little tweaking to get it to recognize everything. However, support was great, and we quickly figured it out.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

None.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

None.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Support has been great, both technical and sales.

Technical Support:

Tech support has been great.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No, we did not. Previously, on vSphere, we just used what we could get out of vCenter.

How was the initial setup?

Straightforward. It was just a virtual appliance.

What about the implementation team?

It was just in-house combined with support from sales/tech support.

What was our ROI?

We haven't calculated it, but I can tell you that it's something we've relied on and must have saved us money, if only in time not having to go look for the information this tool provides.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It was reasonable. Also, they've been very forgiving on the trail end of things, as we only bought licensing for our "new" infrastructure, but monitored the whole (old and new) throughout our transition.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

None.

It has increased the utilization of our hosts without sacrificing performance.

What is most valuable?

  • Automating migrations and implementing storage recommendations
  • Reporting
  • Planning tool

How has it helped my organization?

It has increased the utilization of our hosts without sacrificing performance. We can run more VMs over a longer period of time without needing to purchase additional hardware. The Plan tool is great as you can create a plan and save it for the future. It allows you to configure the plan however you need it to determine what is needed. For example, I use the Plan tool for capacity planning throughout the year, where it used to be a manual process. I now have plans that I can run and within minutes; the report will let me know what we need and where.

I no longer need to keep a watchful eye on the environment. Turbonomic provides assured performance. Anything that we don't yet have automated, it will make a recommendation to improve the performance of that particular server.

What needs improvement?

There is a lot of information and to get a plan or report correct is a little trial and error. Once you get used to the interface and how it works, it does get easier.

For how long have I used the solution?

For about four years

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

None. It's very easy to implement. Deploy the OVA, connect to your environment(s), configure your custom settings particular to your company, and your done.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I've never encountered issues with stability. We did need to increase the memory on the appliance because we have a very large environment.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

None.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Their customer service is second to none. Any time I've had to contact support, they've answered it immediately and correctly.

Technical Support:

Excellent!

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

At a previous place of employment we used vFoglight which was just a terrible product. Turbonomic doesn't even compare because it doesn't monitor your environment and send alerts. It prevents alerts from ever happening.

How was the initial setup?

Very straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

I implemented it myself.

What was our ROI?

It was within 12 months of deployment. It would have been sooner had we been able to enable all recommendations.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

N\A

We now have a perfectly balanced load across our clustered hosts.

What is most valuable?

I'm primarily using Turbo for rightsizing VMs and to prove to application owners that the software vendor's system requirements for reserving huge amounts of resources aren't necessary.

How has it helped my organization?

With VMware's DRS aggressiveness turned down and allowing Turbo to manage the load, we now have a perfectly balanced load across our clustered hosts. These could otherwise easily be off by as much as 30-40%, even on the very aggressive settings in VMware before Turbo.

What needs improvement?

The reporting module has very big potential, but really lacks predefined reports for all kinds of purposes. I often find that the report I need doesn't exist, even though I know the data for it is available.

For how long have I used the solution?

One and a half years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues. Even upgraded to the new CentOS appliance and went through backup and restore of the database without any issues along the way.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's best used in a clustered environment, and a bit cumbersome to maneuver around in when installed in a single host environment.

How is customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Excellent!

Technical Support:

Excellent!

I have had several WebEx sessions where their techs very professionally addressed some questions or issues I had.

What was our ROI?

It has saved us from purchasing new hardware in four regional offices and had us extend the service for two years, instead of buying new servers (HPE Gen8 and Gen9 servers running on fifth year). It has easily returned the investment we made in purchasing Turbo.

Helps us rightsize workloads highlight bottlenecks and effectively plan for capacity.

What is most valuable?

Migration planning, VM rightsIzing reports, performance assurance dashboards, workload placement rules and planning.

How has it helped my organization?

Helps us rightsize workloads, highlight bottlenecks and effectively plan for capacity.

What needs improvement?

Can't wait for the new GUI (which is due soon) as the old interface can be difficult to navigate.

For how long have I used the solution?

Two years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Nope.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Nope.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Nope.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Really good, all the account management I've spoken to understand their product and how we can improve and progress our environment.

Technical Support:

Also really good. All the support staff I've spoken to understand their product and what we're trying to achieve.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No.

How was the initial setup?

Very striaghtforward.

What about the implementation team?

In-house.

What was our ROI?

No exact figure, but the aim is to extend the lifespan of our hypervisor host before adding capacity.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In order to get the most out of the product cost, you need to drive the rightsizing of workloads. Trust in what it recommends.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No.

What other advice do I have?

Nope.
