We automate our vMotions, so it has helped us keep congestion on our hosts way down, and has been more effective than DRS.
What is most valuable?
Automated and intelligent vMotions, VM right-sizing, storage capacity optimization, reporting, and planning.
How has it helped my organization?
We automate our vMotions, so it has helped us keep congestion on our hosts way down, and has been more effective than DRS. We also have used wasted storage report to reclaim over 2TB of storage from orphaned files that would have had to have been manually located before. Turbonomic has also helped with workload and capacity planning, allowing us to be more accurate with requesting expansion during budgeting.
What needs improvement?
I'd like to see an improvement in the reporting, from including more canned reports, to being able to more easily customize the existing ones (without needing to write SQL queries).
For how long have I used the solution?
About one year.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
None.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Here and there, during some older revisions. Since the 5.7 update (I believe) it's been pretty solid. Our issues seemed to relate to the discovery process and inventory, but we haven't had issues for several months now.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Nothing so far.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
Very good. When I've opened cases, I get contacted quickly, and am able to work with an engineer fairly quickly. I've also posted questions and non-critical items on the Green Circle community (Turbonomic's user community), and many times I've gotten quick response from our account manager and engineers.
Technical Support:Very good as well.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
No.
How was the initial setup?
Very straightforward. It was as simple as loading an OVA, setting the networking, and pointing it at our vCenter. Tweaks have been made over time as needed, but the initial setup was quick and painless.
What about the implementation team?
In-house team, with some recommendations from Turbonomic engineers.
What was our ROI?
I don't have an exact number, but we have saved lots of time on troubleshooting performance issues.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Nothing specific, just to only license what you need. For us, we license only our production environment. It would be at least a 25% increase if we licensed our development/test environment too.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We evaluated Foglight and SolarWinds Virtualization Manager before deciding on Turbonomic (or VMTurbo at the time).
What other advice do I have?
No.

We love the custom dashboards. We use them on the TV above our desks and it helps us keep an eye on the environment.
What is most valuable?
We love the custom dashboards. We use them on the TV above our desks and it helps us keep an eye on the environment.
How has it helped my organization?
We no longer have to worry about our hosts being over/under provisioned. Turbonomic just evaluates the VMs and moves them for us. It's one less thing that we have to worry about.
What needs improvement?
Continued development for Hyper-V and additional storage vendor integration too.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have had the solution for about a year.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
We didn't have any issues with deployment.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We did see a few issues on a previous version with reporting. However, their support team was great and had a solution from the developers quickly.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have not had any issues with scalability.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
Customer service has been excellent. We did a very lengthy PoC and they were always willing to answer questions quickly and to offer up ideas about how to tackle issues in our environment.
Technical Support:Technical support has also been excellent. Any time we have a question or concern, we always get a quick and thorough response. We don't dread calling for help like with other solutions we have.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We didn't have a previous solution in place.
How was the initial setup?
The install was very straightforward. I don't think it took more than an hour to implement.

The implementation was in-house.
What was our ROI?
I don't have numbers at this time for ROI, but I do know that we have been able to utilize our hosts more efficiently, and that's huge.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution was well worth the cost for us. It allows our admins to function on the other pieces of our environment.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We didn't evaluate any other options.
What other advice do I have?
If you want to keep a detailed eye on your environment, and also pass off some of the administration to automation, Turbonomic is a great reliable platform for you.

The automation of vStorage migration, ability to create dashboards and the rightsizing recommendations.
What is most valuable?
The automation of vStorage migration, ability to create dashboards and the rightsizing recommendations. We also like the planning and forecasting features.
How has it helped my organization?
We have used the planning feature to retire ESXi hosts and move hosts from one datacenter to another. The planning feature told us how many ESXi hosts we needed to move based on the needed VM resources. We have also used the rightsizing recommendations on some VMs and plan on using it more extensively.
What needs improvement?
We have an instance of Turbonomic for our Azure environment that we're working with Turbonimic on. Many of the current recommendations are inaccurate. We've also experienced some issues with setting our storage up in Turbonomic with our "on prem" environment. In both instances, Turbonomic has been diligently working with us.
For how long have I used the solution?
About six months.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
Deployment for our on-prem solution was straightforward and easy to install. Our Azure deployment was not as easy, but I wasn't involved in that installation.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The platform has been stable during our involvement with it.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
No.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
We have had great experience with Turbonomic customer service.
Technical Support:We have had quick response for any technical support that was required. So far, I'm satisfied with the level of technical support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
No.
How was the initial setup?
Straightforward. Upgrades are easy as well.
What about the implementation team?
In-house, with assistance from Turbonomic.
What was our ROI?
We have been able to decommission some older hardware. We expect more ROI as we continue to right-size our environment.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I wasn't involved in the pricing or licensing.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
No.
What other advice do I have?
None at this time.

The dynamic and autonomous optimization provided by Turbonomic virtual machine placement is impressive.
Pros and Cons
- "With over 2500 ESX VMs, including 1500+ XenDesktop VDI desktops, hosted over two datacentres and 80+ vSphere hosts, firefighting has become something of the past."
- "Since the introduction of a HTML 5 based interface, our main - but minor - criticism of a less than intuitive operation managers' GUI would be the area of improvement."
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature would have to be the out of box automation of VM placement. Without too much configuration, the dynamic and autonomous optimization provided by Turbonomic virtual machine placement is impressive.
With over 2500 ESX VMs, including 1500+ XenDesktop VDI desktops, hosted over two datacentres and 80+ vSphere hosts, firefighting has become something of the past.
All eight of our vCentre clusters happily run hot at 90+% utilization with n+1 redundancy.
How has it helped my organization?
With over two and a half years of Turbonomic in operation, we are now using the planner functionality for an ongoing datacenter consolidation project. The accuracy of our initial planner results again have been impressive, and this will allow us to project investment costs in detail and with confidence.
What needs improvement?
Since the introduction of a HTML 5 based interface, our main - but minor - criticism of a less than intuitive operation managers' GUI would be the area of improvement.
For how long have I used the solution?
Including a four month pre-sales led PoC, Turbonomic has been in production just under three years.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
Some minor reporting related issues with our initial production versions, which were promptly resolved by Turbonomic support.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
No issues with stability, since we moved Turbonomic into production.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Again, we have not come across any issues here.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
Customer service is very good and proactive, with the customer experience team keeping in touch regularly.
Technical Support:With only some minor issues, technical support for us has been very good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
SolarWinds Virtualisation Manager, more of a reporting engine, and lacking any preventive optimization functionality.
We moved to Turbonomic for its performance automation. The included reporting and alerting ability is a nice to have, but more or less obsolete.
How was the initial setup?
The initial OVA based setup, including setting up one or two service accounts, took less than 20 minutes. I believe that our vSphere environment was discovered in less than an hour.
What about the implementation team?
After registering for an extended trial license, the implementation was done by our in-house team under continuous support from Turbonomic consulting.
What was our ROI?
As part of the implementation, Turbonomic provided our business with detailed ROI projections based on our "live" Turbonomic data. By now, cost savings, by guided hardware consolidation and freeing up engineering resources, are very favorable, as projected.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
What I can advise is to trial the product, taking advantage of the Turbonomic pre-sales implemention support and kickstart training.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Yes, we ran a short trial of Dell Foglight for Virtualisation.

For our organization, the key feature/benefit is allowing us to better utilize available resources.
What is most valuable?
For our organization, the key feature/benefit is allowing us to better utilize available resources. Prior to Turbonomic, rightsizing a VM could be tricky. Often the software vendors or application owners overestimated specs. This left us with wasted resources.
How has it helped my organization?
It allows us to rightsize VMs. While scaling down is critical, it is also important to scale up when needed. Turnbonomic monitors your environment and reacts automatically. If a VM needs more vCPU or memory, it gets it automatically. No need for manual intervention. When Turbonomic observes a downward trend and it appears that your VM no longer needs those resources, they can be taken away automatically.
What needs improvement?
We would like to see more integration with storage platforms. Our vendor of choice is not supported.
For how long have I used the solution?
Six-plus months.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
None.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
None.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
None.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
They're great. We haven't had many issues, but when we do they have been very responsive.
Technical Support:Excellent.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Not at this level. We evaluated other solutions and chose Turbonomic.
How was the initial setup?
We opted to have trainers come onsite. They first worked with us remotely to set it up.
What about the implementation team?
We worked with the vendor's staff. They helped with training and setup. They are really top notch.
What was our ROI?
TBD.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Pricing is a bit high IMHO. Our hope is that this solution will delay some planned hardware purchases by allowing us to resize according to true demand.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
SolarWinds and Veeam One.
