Planisware Valuable Features

Avinash Padmanabhan - PeerSpot reviewer

The features of Planisware that I have found most valuable are project management and resource management.

Project management in Planisware has the ability to create projects and then track them by creating events, schedules, and tasks. You can assign resources, create budgets, baseline the cost amount, track how much you have incurred, and how much you have planned—essentially, you can manage it all the way to closure. It includes a complete project life cycle.

The resource management feature in Planisware has helped me and my customers optimize the allocation of resources across various projects because it has the supply and demand concept. Project managers can raise the demand through the plan generation for their project or task. When it gets published, there will be a resource manager for each group or pillar who reviews the raised demand. They can look into the available resource pool and then provide the supply accordingly.

Planisware is a beautiful tool that is very efficient, clear, well-designed, and more robust than any I have used. I started my project management with Primavera, which was the biggest at the time, and I have worked through various tools across the globe, but Planisware is the most robust and has the best stable features that are beneficial for small and medium projects. Since I really only run large projects, it is easy for small projects, and the size of this particular project would have been nearly impossible to manage in other tools like Microsoft Project or Smartsheet or any of those others.

A powerful feature was the resourcing and resource leveling. The SPI and KPIs built in were fantastic for keeping the schedule performance identified. Furthermore, the resource capacity analysis was beneficial. We managed risk in SharePoint, identifying RAID: risks, actions, issues, decisions, and dependencies. We tracked those numbers inside of another custom flex field, where those would be reported on as well, with direct links to manage those RAID items.

The features of Planisware that I find most useful are the ones I use all the time because whenever I have a new action, I enter it and make modifications.

The most important feature of Planisware is when you begin a task, you can make modifications, delete tasks, or add new ones. I work with Planisware all day long because I have many IT infrastructure projects.

I utilize Planisware's resource management feature. The tools are already optimized, and I don't have anything more to optimize for Planisware since it's a SaaS solution, which is better.

The tools communicate with other tools, making it effective, and when we have a new resource, we can add it and send it to the resource management team, who can view it in Planisware.

Scenario planning in Planisware is good for detailed planning, but the design planning tool needs optimization. The positive impact I have seen from working with Planisware is due to its efficacy and speed; it has very few updates and is easy to use.

Planisware offers integration with multiple tools and provides a good level of customization. However, a noted advantage for some users is the user interface, although I personally do not find it very user-friendly. Additionally, its ability to scale easily is valuable.

It establishes a centralized repository of data, offering the ability to keep information confidential while maximizing the potential value of the data. It stands out by automating the intricate mechanics of project execution, eliminating the need for highly technical individuals to manage and reconfigure models. It not only handles the essential aspects of project management but also accommodates executive decision-maker operations such as portfolio management, strategic objective prioritization, and stage-gate approvals.

It has an inbuilt BI tool, which can be compared to Power BI or Tableau. We don't need to export Planisware data to an external application, and we don't need to create any reports. We can use the in-house tool. I really like it.

We are on a journey of rolling out the Planisware tool for our entire organization. For now, it will be too early for us to call it a victory and say that a particular feature is prominent in Planisware.

Overall, our company has all disintegrated systems, and with Planisware, we are getting a very integrated view of my portfolio reporting, cost and load, and everything else. That is definitely an advantage of the Planisware PPM software we are using.

Strategic Portfolio module offers an OKR page (objectives and key results) to connect specific company strategy with defined measurable actions.

1. Planisware Enterprise is a flexible fusion of project, product, portfolio, resource, cost modules and much more. It successfully enables prioritization of business cases, resource capacity planning and utilization, extensive scheduling, and multi-national monetary costs with individual rate escalations. Planisware can handle and display concurrent complex projects with long time horizons and intensive resourcing (such as R&D). User-adaptable views of data can be tailored to a variety of user classes.

2. Planisware has depth of capabilities to enable a given organization to address solutions according to most pressing need, whether that be resource planning, time card administration, project scheduling, or portfolio prioritization. Moreover, each solution can flexibly embrace local business processes. Within widely accepted project management principles, Planisware genuinely offers, "Have it your way."

3. Planisware excels in resource planning, especially with providing depth for an extensive set of algorithms in parametric estimation. For example, large R&D pharma organizations can exceed the limits of available database columns with locally defined attributes (or fields). Planisware makes provision for defining "drivers" (e.g., project complexity) in separate database tables from attributes used for sorting or filtering in order to remain within Oracle or PLSQL for needed specificity (what Planisware development uses instead of Microsoft product).

4. Granting the need for planned, prioritized deployment and making ample provision for competent operational maintainability, Planisware offers unsurpassed empowerment to business users to extend and adapt the deployed configuration, particularly when application expertise is governed and embedded in the business rather than controlled exclusively within IT. Reducing day-to-day dependence upon IT is a hidden distinctive of Planisware.

5. Planisware thoughtfully builds additional capabilities into virtually every major release for enhanced functionality. In practice, Planisware, as an array of integrated, critical planning tools, will not become obsolete any more than comprehensive financial suites such as SAP. Planisware is a revitalizing "blank canvas" for enterprise project/product portfolio management that keeps conforming to organizational needs.

Locally created standard project templates enable project managers to duplicate the core of a project quickly with a few mouse clicks. Templates maintain consistent project components, including activity types, inter-activity project links.

Planisware Explorer (PEX) offers enhanced capabilities for reporting and charting that goes beyond the functions in the Report Builder module, such as dynamic queries and advanced dashboards. PEX requires extra training for operational proficiency, such as studying Help Center documents and making use of practice sessions. Fee-based Planisware Academy courses will accelerate mastering PEX.

Administration module grants superuser(s) control of module visibility for regular Planisware users. The Data page shows available Object types.

Creating and using formulas in Planisware Enterprise is now streamlined, with integrated formula validation. In my judgment, having more extensive "offline" documentation would benefit new users.

Historically with Planisware, the load array, a feature that has been available since the 1990s with improvements, enables very flexible time slicing that surpasses such reporting capability via Excel. In concert with native and composite cost curves, the load array charts provides thoughtful, adaptable consolidation and drill-down for time-phased data such as capacity (resource availability) and demand (planned or archived hours on tasks).

Planisware Explorer (PEX) offers enhanced capabilities for reporting and charting that goes beyond the functions in the Report Builder module, such as dynamic queries. PEX requires extra training for operational proficiency, typically from multiple fee-based Planisware courses.

Administration module enables super-user to control visibility of modules for regular Planisware users. The Data page shows available Object types.

E7 improves documents management to centralize communications among project users and stakeholders. Because the documents are included in each Planisware environment/configuration, messaging and documents associated with projects are easier to access than being spread through normal corporate email. Planisware stores project related documents and messages in a single database. Snapshots (backups) at a given point in time are easy to make and restore to alternate environments, even on an automated nightly basis.

Program and project roadmaps integrate well with PowerPoint. Slide elements are editable and dynamically linked (if so specified) to detail projects. Capability to drill down into project specifics is mature, native functionality.

Strategic Portfolio module offers an OKR page (objectives and key results) to connect specific company strategy with defined measurable actions.

Overall, I would say this software deserves an 8/10 given the overall balance of features it provides and its flexibility to adapt to organisations.

Planisware integrates in a powerful way project scheduling, resource & costs management amongst other things. Such a mix is extremely useful in R&D matrix organisations. It is not a surprise if PLW is a market leader amongst Pharma companies, which struggle to maintain product portfolios with decreasing resources.
