We use Mimecast specifically for email security purposes. It is useful for all organizations that require secure email. It makes a significant difference by saving bandwidth and redirecting mail to an external partner. It also safeguards if a virus gets through. Their plans are reasonably priced, which is beneficial for customers.

We are our business is a nonprofit medical, dental, behavioral health, and optometry.

We have HIPAA in the United States. This is, basically, a patient privacy protocol. We have to stay compliant with HIPAA. Therefore, we have to monitor the content of the mail, both in and out, on a very basic level to make sure that it doesn't give outpatient information. This product has a built-in HIPAA dictionary, So that it will automatically scan inbound and outbound emails, based on a set of parameters that we feed into the system. It will stop anything it thinks might be a problem. It will let us know, and then we can review the mail and release it or reject it as needed. That's extremely important for us so that personal health identification information doesn't get out there for any patients.

We also use it to track messaging. If someone says, "I didn't get a message," we can confirm or deny that based on what we see.

We use URL protection inside emails so it will potentially block what it thinks is a bad URL. Those are often false positives. However, it's better safe than sorry.

We do all our spam filtering through it so that it will block any spam. If it's on the borderline, it will let the user know and ask them if this is a legit email; however, mostly, it's just blocking things, and we review. A couple of times every day, we'll look just to see if anything's getting held there that shouldn't be.

We have a client using the Mimecast tool. We observe multiple information sensors, such as default information, mismatched data, unknown IPs, and various user activities.

They use Mimecast to monitor outbound traffic, including impersonation and mismatched data. All these activities are managed within Mimecast. Companies use Mimecast to enhance network security within their budget. For outbound communication, emails go to Mimecast, where they are scanned and delivered to the user.

Mimecast security in general, it's a SaaS service so they have their servers; they have everything on their side and we're just quote-unquote, passing the traffic through them, the email traffic through them.

Mimecast has multiple different solutions, all linked to the email. They recently added user info security training, but we're not using that. We, however, are using the archive piece and we're currently using their security threat protection. Regarding the threat protection — that does just fine. As far as the security goes — they had a big hiccup earlier this year where they were giving a false positive to a bunch of attachments. I'm not sure what happened on their side but for one week at least we had that issue. It took them a little over a week to resolve the issue. We also had some minor incidents after that, that they resolved.

Generally speaking, other than that event, it has been good. It doesn't block a hundred percent of the security threats received, but you have a lot of options to tag or even further analyze the messages received through Mimecast, either to a third-party solution or through an endpoint solution.

Everyone uses this solution at our company, whether they know it or not because you can leave it as transparent as you want it, or as user-demanding as you want it. There are specific items that only IT uses, but in general, this solution is used by one hundred percent of the company.
