Our company is transitioning to using the solution for monitoring and analytic services we provide to customers. Once fully rolled out, there will be 80-100 users companywide.
Site Reliability Engineer at a financial services firm with 1-10 employees
Straightforward setup is impressive and SaaS model works well in multi-cloud environments
Pros and Cons
- "The solution's SaaS model is easy to manage and works well in single- or multi-cloud environments."
- "Graph filters for logs need to be set manually which works well for JSON but not for unstructured logs."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The solution's SaaS model is easy to manage and works well in single- or multi-cloud environments.
The Saas format can handle heterogeneous or multi-language applications much better than using a combination of tools.
What needs improvement?
Graph filters for logs need to be set manually which works well for JSON but not for unstructured logs.
Making structured logs for high-performance applications is over our heads so we had to dump some technical streams for our logs.
For how long have I used the solution?
I recently started using the solution.

User friendly interface and integrations make it best in class
Pros and Cons
- "The interface and the integrations make it so easy to connect to the cloud or to the on-premise environment."
- "Datadog does not have the feature where you can monitor external websites or check the SSL secure for websites."
What is most valuable?
I like Datadog because it is so easy use, I can easily connect to public clouds, and I have a view of observability. In my opinion it's the best tool in the market.
I like the interface so much. The interface and the integrations make it so easy to connect to the cloud or to the on-premise environment. It has so many monitors for alerting. I like all the versions and especially the APM model, on which I did a lot more testing with my applications. I have made applications for testing the tool that is in the resource. The APM is the goal for me in the Datadog.
What needs improvement?
In terms of what could be improved, Datadog does not have the feature where you can monitor external websites or check the SSL secure for websites.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Datadog for the last 14 days.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
In terms of stability, I don't have any problem with its stability or the website data. They have a solid infrastructure. I don't have any problems with that.
How was the initial setup?
It was simple to configure and to set up this tool.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I have less experience with Zabbix than I have with Datadog, but I don't see Zabbix as a great tool for cloud specific monitoring because I cannot connect so easily to public clouds to gain all the information that I can in Datadog, which I can easily set up.
I have used Zabbix for 20 days for my personal tests and I really don't like it.
There is something that I liked with Zabbix, though. Zabbix is better for monitoring virtual machines. That's a feature that I liked. But everything else is awful. I can't have dashboards. I do not have integrations with some ITSM systems, like Jira or OTRS. It's awful because I need to have those integrations.
I would rate Zabbix a nine from one to ten for on premises environments. For cloud platforms, I rate this tool as a five, because of the complexity required to integrate it in other platforms.
What other advice do I have?
On a scale of one to ten, I would rate Datadog a nine, just because of the missing feature of checking websites.

Tech Lead & Solutions Architect at DXC
Customizable, attractive panel design, and gives broad insight
Pros and Cons
- "I have found some of the most valuable features to be the way things all come together that gives us a point of view that is useful. The panel is very beautiful and customizable."
- "The installation is easy for me. However, if you are new to this solution it might not be so easy."
What is our primary use case?
I implement this solution for clients.
What is most valuable?
I have found some of the most valuable features to be the way things all come together that gives us a point of view that is useful. The panel is very beautiful and customizable. The configuration file was really helpful, we were able to configure the solution in the way we needed. The portability of this solution is more flexible than other competitors, allowing us to change cloud services when we want. We are not locked into a particular one.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We have used CloudWatch previously and this solution is better at meeting all our needs.
How was the initial setup?
The installation is easy for me. However, if you are new to this solution it might not be so easy.
What about the implementation team?
I am an implementor, I did the implantation of the solution.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Datadog a nine out of ten.

Project Director at a tech services company with 501-1,000 employees
Valuable logs, pretty stable, and provides a single tool for architecture and infrastructure
Pros and Cons
- "Its logs are most valuable."
- "Its pricing model can be improved. Its settings should be improved for a better understanding of billing. They should also provide some alerts when there is an increase in the usage. For example, if there is 20% more increase from one week to another, the customer should get an alert."
What is our primary use case?
We use it for our infrastructure network and servers.
How has it helped my organization?
From our customer's and our perspective, it has not brought much change in terms of the process. Datadog did not change anything about the process. It only provided a single tool instead of having to use multiple tools.
What is most valuable?
Its logs are most valuable.
What needs improvement?
Its pricing model can be improved. Its settings should be improved for a better understanding of billing. They should also provide some alerts when there is an increase in usage. For example, if there is a 20% more increase from one week to another, the customer should get an alert.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is pretty stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The perimeter in which we worked was not big enough to get any information about scalability.
How are customer service and technical support?
Their technical support is fine.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
One of our customers was using another solution. They switched because of the scalability of the perimeter. Their previous solutions were limited in terms of the kind of servers and virtual machines. They had multiple tools, and Datadog provided them a single tool for architecture and infrastructure.
How was the initial setup?
Its initial setup is complex.
What about the implementation team?
We installed it ourselves.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I am not satisfied with its licensing. Its payment is based on the exported data, and there was an explosion of the data for three or four weeks. My customer was not alerted, and there was no way for them to see that there has been an explosion of data. They got a big invoice for one or two months. The pricing model of Datadog is based on the data. The customer was quite surprised about not being alerted about this explosion of data. They should provide some kind of alert when there is an increase in usage.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We evaluated various in-house and external options.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise others to take a step-by-step approach rather than a from-zero-to-everything approach.
I would rate Datadog an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud

Great observability, monitoring, and alerting capabilities
Pros and Cons
- "It brings in observability, monitoring, and alerting capabilities - all of which we need to operate at scale."
- "The current way accounts are billed could be vastly improved - especially when involving multiple organizations across multiple accounts in combination with reserved commitments."
What is our primary use case?
We are providing managed services to our customers across multiple industries. Datadog is key to delivering these services by bringing the observability, monitoring, and alerting capabilities we need to operate at scale.
We operate custom cloud native workloads as well as ISV products such as Atlassian Jira or Confluence.
Integrating Synthetics, infrastructure, and application performance monitoring, as well as piping all logs through Datadog allows us to operate more with less with good alerting right in time.
How has it helped my organization?
We are providing managed services to our customers across multiple industries.
Datadog is key to delivering these services. It brings in observability, monitoring, and alerting capabilities - all of which we need to operate at scale.

Integrating Synthetics, infrastructure, and application performance monitoring, as well as piping all logs through Datadog, help with getting alerts in real-time.
What is most valuable?
We are providing managed services to our customers across multiple industries.
Datadog delivers observability, monitoring, and alerting capabilities we need to operate at scale.
Operating custom cloud native workloads as well as ISV products such as Atlassian Jira or Confluence is also something we do. Integrating Synthetics, infrastructure, and application performance monitoring, as well as piping all logs through Datadog allows us to operate while grabbing alerts in real-time.
What needs improvement?
The current way accounts are billed could be vastly improved - especially when involving multiple organizations across multiple accounts in combination with reserved commitments.
Being able to have an automatic materialized report on certain dashboards that could be exported as PDF to be shared with non-Datadog users could help a lot.
Other than that, we are more than happy with the features we use regularly.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using Datadog since 2015.

Principal Engineer at a comms service provider with 51-200 employees
It has the ability to create dashboards and matrices with graphs
Pros and Cons
- "Using the data, our operation teams works with the dashboards to get their statistics, analytics, etc."
- "I would like testing for data in the future."
What is our primary use case?
We mainly use it to send metrics about CV and memory usage, in addition to the number of files descriptors on a socket.
How has it helped my organization?
We are working as an SMS segregator. Therefore, we send a lot of SMS message to customers. This product holds one of the most important dashboards for our traffic from each server or cluster on our Gateway. It gives us very good information, mainly for the operations team and other sales guys, about what each account is sending, how often, etc.
Using the data, our operation teams works with the dashboards to get their statistics, analytics, etc.
What is most valuable?
The ability to create dashboards and matrices with graphs. This information is useful to us.
What needs improvement?
I would like testing for data in the future. That would be really nice.
Also, I would like some additional enhancement in the visuals.
For how long have I used the solution?
One to three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is good. For every message that we send, we have a corresponding metric. We send one to two million messages per server a day.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is good.
We have over a 1000 accounts on three servers. There are other servers, which work as a helper server. However, the servers which help aid traffic or do the heavy lifting are three main servers, currently. They are hosted on Amazon: large machines with large instances.
How is customer service and technical support?
I have not used Datadog's technical support.
How was the initial setup?
The AWS integration and configuration is pretty good. It has multiple languages and platforms.
What other advice do I have?
Give it a try. It is a good tool for creating statistics and analytics with data.
Anyone who uses a large amount of data and want insights on the analytics of their data. They can just dump into the tool, and it will do all the heavy lifting.

Helps track incidents and integrates with Slack but needs better tooling integration within Slack
Pros and Cons
- "It is great that creating an incident is possible from Slack while having all the relevant data in Datadog."
- "I would like the tooling to have better integration in Slack, specifically sending out reminders to the relevant people to take breaks, do a retrospective, and specify with emojis which messages to log."
What is our primary use case?
We use Datadog incident management for our incident tooling. Whenever we run into an incident, we try to use it. It allows us to create a separate Slack channel for it.
How has it helped my organization?
Keeping track of incidents makes it possible to share learnings and follow-up. It is also required for SOC2 compliance.
What is most valuable?
It is great that creating an incident is possible from Slack while having all the relevant data in Datadog. It allows us to not think too much about organizing incidents, which is a highly stressful situation.
What needs improvement?
I would like the tooling to have better integration in Slack, specifically sending out reminders to the relevant people to take breaks, do a retrospective, and specify with emojis which messages to log.
Learning about the tooling could also be improved. It is a bit clunky to use, especially in an incident. It could definitely be more streamlined.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for about a year.

Security Engineer at a computer software company with 11-50 employees
Great dashboards, helpful visualizations, and has the capability to scale
Pros and Cons
- "The Datadog suite has allowed us to easily integrate log collection into all of our services and quickly detect unexpected changes in system data to declare security incidents."
- "The ease of implementation needs improvement."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution for security monitoring and anomaly detection.
How has it helped my organization?
The Datadog suite has allowed us to easily integrate log collection into all of our services and quickly detect unexpected changes in system data to declare security incidents.
What is most valuable?
The dashboards are great. They allow for the visualization of log data over time to detect anomalous behavior.
What needs improvement?
The ease of implementation needs improvement. I did not personally experience the initial deployment of Datadog in our environment, however, after some conference workshops, some of the pain points with deployment and turning on certain settings or features were revealed. I would not know how to deal with these issues (or sometimes where to begin) if I were starting from scratch.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Datadog is very easy to deploy at scale when implemented early in the deployment process and if made a deployment requirement.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We did not previously use a different solution.
How was the initial setup?
I was not involved with the initial setup.
What about the implementation team?
What was our ROI?
What other advice do I have?
The solution is deployed as a SaaS.
