We have a lot more visibility on what is happening on a single pane of glass.

What is most valuable?

Starting from the reporting and recommendations, every feature has been very helpful. Even when we decided to not fully automate it, now we have a lot more visibility into what is happening, on a single pane of glass.

How has it helped my organization?

We use the tool to properly size the virtual servers and get a lot of resources back, while reducing the Ready time, so that was like winning twice.

What needs improvement?

I would like to have a report to see all the snapshots.

For how long have I used the solution?

About a year now.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues at all. That was the goal since the first call: please don't bring me something else to manage that will take forever to be in place. Thirty minutes on the phone and the tool was working.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and support?

Customer Service:

Excellent.

Technical Support:

Great too. Didn't go to anybody who didn't knew what was doing. Sometimes when you call to support, you get that feeling that the guy is not following you or does not have a clue what you're asking for. That never happens with their support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No tool before.

How was the initial setup?

Very straightforward. Thirty minutes on the phone and the tool was working.

What about the implementation team?

In-house.

What was our ROI?

Not calculated yet, but definitively positive, since we recoup a lot of resources.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

They are very flexible on how to make it happen.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No.

What other advice do I have?

Great tool, easy to recommend.

Turbonomic has a user friendly outlook making it easy for consumers to navigate within the web UI.

Interesting aspects of Turbonomic:

  1. Turbonomic is helpful in generating a variety of reports. In most cases these reports act as the baseline for maintenance activities that we carry out within our virtual environment.
  2. Turbonomic has a user friendly outlook making it easy for consumers to navigate within the web UI.
  3. I use the 'Plan' tab within Turbonomic to perform capacity planning and trending analysis thereby predicting growth/decline within the virtual infrastructure.
  4. Scheduling reports and creating dashboards (for subsets of the environment) are a few among many features within Turbonomic.

Areas for improvement:

  1. 'Supply Chain' tab within Turbonomic could be presented differently in an  effort to make it more useful for the customers.
  2. 'Group Management' allows you to create 'Custom Groups' but not all dashboards can be scoped to these 'Custom Groups'.
  3. Regular upgrades and patching requires a period of getting used to the new environment before getting hands-on with the tool.

I look forward to exploiting all the features available within Turbonomic and making our virtual environment stable, resilient, and adaptive.

One of the most valuable features for us was the automation aspect.

Valuable Features

One of the most valuable features for us was the automation aspect. Defining policies to automate the recommendation process helped us in saving valuable time and reducing manual workload. Going one step further we will be implementing the automatic deployment of hosts based on the desired state information coming from Turbonomic. This way we can have hosts dynamically installed and booted based on our workload.

Improvements to My Organization

We have been able to reduce manual labor in keeping our environment healthy performance wise.

Room for Improvement

One of the areas of improvement are the UI. The current UI feels a bit out dated. Although all information is readily available and easily accessible. From what I have heard and seen at VMworld 2016, a new UI is in development and will be released shortly.

Use of Solution

1 year.

Deployment Issues

Deployment is very simple and straightforward.

Stability Issues

Scalability Issues

Due to the ability to link multiple instance to each other, it can easily be scaled and segmented.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Technical Support:

Same as the customer service.

Initial Setup

Very simple and straightforward.

ROI

Less load.

Allows me to keep track of resource use across multiple sites.

What is most valuable?

The real time resource usage and capacity planning have been essential to my work.

How has it helped my organization?

As a one man IT department, keeping track of resource use across multiple sites has been complicated at best. With Operations Manager, I can see my entire infrastructure in one view, in real time.

What needs improvement?

Personally, I find the interface, especially for a new user, to be less than user friendly. I don't think this is an issue due to a poor product, but more because the product can do so much, finding the simple tasks can be difficult. After using for a while, it makes sense, and navigating becomes easier.

For how long have I used the solution?

Less than 1 year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

None, deployment was smooth and easy.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Top Notch. The one time I need to contact support, they were responsive and courteous.

Technical Support:

I have only needed support once, and the technician was knowledgeable and helpful in resolving my issue.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No.

How was the initial setup?

Very straightforward. It took me longer to identify a free IP address on my network than to get the software running.

What about the implementation team?

Direct from Turbonomic.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is quite fair, especially compared to VMware Operation Manager.

What other advice do I have?

My review is unbiased and true to my use, however I was promised compensation for my review.

Handles load balancing in VMware clusters.

What is most valuable?

Turbonomic does a great job of handling things like:

  • Load balancing in VMware clusters
  • Giving insights into how VMs are being utilized resource-wise
  • Giving insights into how virtualized applications are running inside of VMs
  • Offering suggestions (and that can be automated) to adjust clusters, host hypervisors, and VMs for the best performance

How has it helped my organization?

It has saved us a lot of time in keeping our vSphere clusters running smoothly.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have used this solution for four to five years.

How is customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

This is one of the areas that Turbonomic shines. Any issues we have with the product are handled quickly. Turbonomic has a great and knowledgeable support staff. There are no first-tier database reading techs here. (You know what I'm talking about!)

Technical Support:

Technical support is very professional, efficient, and knowledgeable.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was straightforward. Understanding how the application works in our environment and how to set up rules for different clusters, however, took a little longer. Turbonomic has great training materials on their web site and a really good user forum. They have a top-notch support and engineering team.

Nagios.

eG Innovations, Nagios, Cacti, openstack, vRealize SCVMM.

As a MSP, a hidden gem is the planning guide. I use it for sales guys to determine if they need to purchase any new CPU nodes, for quotes they are preparing for potential clients.

We are able to right-size VMs and host resources to save money and provide services to the business.

What is most valuable?

Turbonomics ability to present suggested improvements, and enact those changes upon approval, have been very helpful in our environment. We are able to right-size VMs and host resources to save money and provide services to the business.

How has it helped my organization?

We have saved money by not having to purchase Enterprise (including DRS) and no longer having to manually balance VMs in a cluster.

What needs improvement?

The interface has so much to offer, it is a bit complex and there is a learning curve. However, they are more than happy to spend time teaching you to use the product.
