What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
I have found the most valuable feature of Fortinet FortiOS is the low maintenance.
What needs improvement?
The central management can improve in Fortinet FortiOS. It is sometimes difficult to manage all the devices.
I wrote my opinion about changes to the SSL-VPN authentication directly on the Fortinet forum, and they said that right now they will not change it. Hopefully, in the future, they will change the SSL-VPN authentication for groups and users.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of Fortinet FortiOS depends on the operation being done. If we are using the basic functions I would rate the stability of Fortinet FortiOS a five out of five. If we are using the advanced functionality I would rate the stability a three out of five. Overall the solution is stable.
How are customer service and support?
The support from Fortinet FortiOS is good. However, there are times they give a five out of five level of support and whereas other times they give a one out of five.
How was the initial setup?
Fortinet FortiOS's installation is easy.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The scalability of Fortinet FortiOS is good. However, central management is intuitive for the end-users. We had a lot of questions about central management, and sometimes they didn't use it and did their firewall management directly on FortiGate instead of using Fortinet FortiOS.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to others is for them to read the instructions on how to use the solution.
I rate Fortinet FortiOS a nine out of ten.

Performs better than competing solutions
Pros and Cons
- "Performance-wise, I think FortiOS is much better than its Juniper counterpart. Based on our actual experience and performance metrics, FortiOS-based products are much better than Juniper."
- "They're using a lot of application-specific IC, so that may be causing some performance issues. And whenever a Fortinet adds new features, it can affect performance."
What is our primary use case?
We use FortiOS for the internet router and firewall for our customers' offices. In some of the smaller offices, there is only one FortiGate, but the hub site may have a pair of firewalls in an HA configuration.
What is most valuable?
Performance-wise, I think FortiOS is much better than its Juniper counterpart. Based on our actual experience and performance metrics, FortiOS-based products are much better than Juniper. We've experienced some trouble with Juniper in the past and some unstable, unpredictable performance on Juniper devices.
What needs improvement?
They're using a lot of application-specific IC, so that may be causing some performance issues. And whenever a Fortinet adds new features, it can affect performance. I don't handle implementation, so I have to ask my frontline engineers to implement new features, like software-defined WAN service. But I'm not sure these are stable and acceptable because this project is still in progress. FortiOS and all the other firewall products are adding SD-WAN service, and this kind of service needs a lot of resources from the fabrics, the hardware, and the software. Still, I think we have more confidence deploying this service with FortiOS than using the other brands, like Juniper.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using FortiOS for more than 15 years.
How are customer service and support?
Fortinet provides sufficient support, and their response time is reasonable.
How was the initial setup?
We have a team of around 10 engineers that manage FortiOS-based devices and all other firewall brands.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
FortiOS has a UTM feature, for which you have to buy an annual subscription. Most brands of firewalls will also have such a subscription.
What other advice do I have?
I rate FortiOS at least eight out of 10, and we recommend it to our customers.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Also offers email filtering and data loss prevention
Pros and Cons
- "All networks are security-driven, we get throughputs and security. We feel that the people at Fortinet are easy to deal with from a support standpoint. If they need to jump in and help us, they're very willing to do that. Their email filtering, their data loss prevention, their intrusion prevention, type of products in the newest OSs has been outstanding."
- "It could more scalable for the lower end users."
What is our primary use case?
It's a security device. We use it to keep the bad guys away.

A firewall is a security appliance. FortiGate also does email filtering and does data loss prevention.

For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Fortinet FortiOS for ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is excellent.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability is wonderful. Affordability is really good.
Everybody's being protected by the firewall. The firewall device is using the operating system. And so, in that sense, you could say everybody is using it. The people that are actually technically working with the Fortinet devices are a handful, six to eight technicians.
How are customer service and technical support?
We feel that the people at Fortinet are easy to deal with from a support standpoint. If they need to jump in and help us, they're very willing to do that. Their email filtering, their data loss prevention, their intrusion prevention, type of products in the newest OSs has been outstanding.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We've used other solutions in the past. But we've settled into FortiGate for around 10 years.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was straightforward. It's pretty much just plug and play. It takes hours.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
They're very competitive and easy to work with in terms of pricing. I can't say, that's why we chose them, that's why we've stuck with them. It's a very well-respected name in the industry.
Everybody wants to go to Cisco for different things and everybody loves to hate Cisco. Cisco is a great product for large companies. They're low income, they're low-end products and their support for their low-end products leaves a lot to be desired. That's hence why SonicWall, Extreme Networks, and Fortinet are in business. There are these other smaller companies that are getting involved with the smaller companies, taking market shares away from Cisco because Cisco's support for their product is bad.
The support contracts are usually about $100 - $200 a device. The support contract usually includes software upgrades, hardware maintenance, and hardware break-fix. And they very seldom break.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I am looking at replacing some SonicWalls for a customer. I think SonicWall is its competition. SonicWall is got a good product, but I still believe that FortiGate is the best product for the people that we deal with.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to someone implementing this solution is not to take shortcuts. Shortcuts aren't good. Don't hesitate to use FortiGate's technical support.
Always buy support. Always buy FortiCare. You can buy it for one year, two years, or three years with the initial purchase. We always buy it and sell it to our customers for three years. And the product will last more than three years.
Fortinet competes in the big companies as well. We just don't. Our marketplace is the smaller users two or three, maybe four locations, 150 to 300 endpoints. So we're not dealing in the 10,000s of users trying to get into 100 of servers. We're dealing with tens and fifties and a hundred, trying to get into a few servers.
I would rate it a nine out of ten. It could more scalable for the lower end users.

It has high availability features so we can have one box on hot standby to take over when another one crashes
Pros and Cons
- "FortiOS allows us to set up alarms for blocked websites and SSL verifications. When someone tries to access a blocked site, the solution sends a notification to the IT manager's mailbox."
- "FortiOS could provide a more detailed analysis of the network and connected devices."
What is our primary use case?
I was working at a bank where internal information security was strict, so I needed to block a lot of websites in Fortinet. For example, we needed to block Gmail, WhatsApp Web, porn, and violent content.
What is most valuable?
FortiOS allows us to set up alarms for blocked websites and SSL verifications. When someone tries to access a blocked site, the solution sends a notification to the IT manager's mailbox.
The user interface is easy to use. Fortinet has high availability features, so you can have an active and hot standby box. We can have two boxes in Rio and two in São Paulo. When a box crashes, we can transfer all the operations to the second box.
FortiOS tells you exactly what is happening in the first box, so you can quickly understand what went wrong and troubleshoot. Users rarely notice an impact on the daily operations.
What needs improvement?
FortiOS could provide a more detailed analysis of the network and connected devices.
For how long have I used the solution?
I used Fortinet for about nine months.
How are customer service and support?
We have a support contract with a third-party company, but Fortinet provides the licenses, so we update the solution ourselves using the license code.

Offers good protection and control of traffic, with better deep packet inspection than Azure Firewall
Pros and Cons
- "I like that the firewall gives me a lot of control in terms of outgoing and inbound traffic, and it scores better in deep packet inspections when compared with the Azure Firewall."
- "The support could be improved, Fortinet's response time is very slow. Setting up the VPN could be made much easier, especially when deployed with Azure."
What is our primary use case?
We are consultant architects so our role is to set up firewalls for our customers, who are usually small and medium-sized companies.

How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of this solution is relatively easy.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing could always be lower.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
If I'm going with Azure data center, my first recommendation would always be Azure Firewall with the newly launched premium services. Otherwise, Fortinet is pretty good.
What other advice do I have?
I rate this solution an eight out of ten. I advise users to go through the documentation very thoroughly as it's not the same as your on-premises Fortinet Power. It's slightly different. Setting up the VPN is a bit tricky in Azure, deploying the Fortinet firewall and Azure is somewhat tricky.
