For how long have I used the solution?
One to three years.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
It collects data, manipulation and some Geo-spacial mapping.
Pros and Cons
- "The tools are built-in. You just plug and play, drag and drop, once you understand how to use the tools, it is easy."
- "I think better visualization would be helpful to this solution."
- "It is a little bit pricey."
- "It seems to me that it is not always user friendly."
What is our primary use case?
It collects data and manipulation and some Geo-spacial mapping.
How has it helped my organization?
It provides opportunities to do some pretty complex tasks easily, without having to worry about the Java. The tools are built-in. You just plug and play, drag and drop, once you understand how to use the tools, it is easy.
What needs improvement?
I think better visualization would be helpful. In terms of data extraction, during the sequel queries of servers as an example, you can structure your sequel query and it's fine, very readable, but once you run it, it crashes into one complex single line, and makes it very difficult. Then you you almost have to go back to management studio, and run it through management studio and put it through restructuring, and it just seems to me that that's not very user friendly.
For how long have I used the solution?
One to three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is a very stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
For our purposes, the scalability is fine. But, I think that scaling it for a big enterprise would probably be an expensive endeavor.
How is customer service and technical support?
I would rate the tech support a 7.5 out of 10. They do not necessarily provide lots of hands on support themselves, instead they farm it out to partners and forums.
How was the initial setup?
The learning curve for implementation was a bit steep. You pretty much have to teach yourself as you are setting up the solution. Once you do that, you are OK.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It is a little bit pricey. The desktop version is cheaper, it is on a one year license. And, if you want to do anything on an enterprise name it is quite expensive. The current pricing model may get to be too much in three to four years time.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We also considered DataBricks.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise that you should ask yourself what you need and want, and do a one-month trial.

Provides a single source of truth to help us see the bigger picture
Pros and Cons
- "The value add of Alteryx is the agility for making changes, and speed of deployment."
- "The learning curve is long, and there is lack of e-learning; the tool is not user-friendly to a non-technical user."
How has it helped my organization?
We can now provide a single source of truth and build a bigger picture.
What is most valuable?
The data preparation. We have high reporting needs and the data is stored in many different tools. We are moving to predictive analysis too. Still, we need an easy to deploy solution until the IT department finds a better solution to connect all data sources.
What needs improvement?
The learning curve is long, and there is lack of e-learning; the tool is not user-friendly to a non-technical user.
For how long have I used the solution?
One to three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
No stability issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
No scalability issues, if it is accompanied with centralization or the organization has a strong top-down culture.
How are customer service and technical support?
I would rate tech support five out of five. The team is willing to work with you and help with any difficulties.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We were using Oracle BI, and we are still using it. The value add of Alteryx is the agility for making changes, and speed of deployment.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The seat is too expensive.
What other advice do I have?
I am using the desktop version. The only issue is it supports only a 64-bit system so I have to use an earlier version.
My advice to regarding this product is to keep learning and not rely too much on the support team.

Provides spatial tools for geographic analysis and data enrichment
Pros and Cons
- "One-stop shop for data preparation, blending, prediction, and optimization in a single workflow."
- "More statistics tools: We can use to compare SPSS statistics with some automated advisory."
What is most valuable?
- One-stop shop for data preparation, blending, prediction, and optimization in a single workflow.
- In-database analytics native to SQL Server, Oracle, Teradata, and SAP HANA
- Spatial tools for geographic analysis and data enrichment
How has it helped my organization?
We provided the whole consulting delivery on a single tool with reporting and automated PowerPoint presentations.
What needs improvement?
- GPU or multi-core CPU utilization
- WYSIWYG reporting with interactive filters and graphics
- Mobile integration: Triggers analytic apps through mobile phone and gets results interactively.
- More statistics tools: We can use to compare SPSS statistics with some automated advisory.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using this solution since 2014.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
There were no deployment issues, and it went pretty fast. You sometimes need a license file if you are behind a firewall.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
When the workflows are huge and complex, it may take some time to refresh it.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
There were no issues with scalability.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
Customer service is pretty responsive, based on the UK and US time zones.
Technical support is pretty responsive and knowledgeable. The community support is exceptional, too. It is a very crowded community with lots of practical solutions.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
- SPSS modeler: Not easy to prep features. It needs data enrichment using spatial features. Deployment is not straightforward.
- SAS Analytics, EG, EM, DataFlux forecasting: Very expensive solutions with steep learning curves
How was the initial setup?
The setup was simple. It was pretty much "next, next, and next".
What about the implementation team?
We did the implementation in-house.
What was our ROI?
With a $5K USD designer tool, we already did some big data. There were lots of fruitful projects. I would estimate a six of seven times ROI in a few months.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
A designer and scheduler for $13K/year in total is pretty much earning you the money back in time and in other resources.
The server is a big bet and you need at least 10-15 people with designers or 60-70 people for the continuous use of analytic apps. Otherwise, it's too early to scale up and out.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
- KNIME: A modeling tool not easy to learn, track/audit, or deploy quickly.
- RapidMiner: Good analytics capabilities, deep learning. However, not good for ETL, data quality, or spatial enrichment.
- SAS: Extremely expensive, archaic, and no need to take the risk.
- SPSS modeler: Second best for modeling, but not enough spatial. It is hard to deploy and has a lack of vision.
What other advice do I have?
This solution has a very bold vision.
Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer. Started using the tool for consulting purposes in 2014. During my tenure at Experian, I founded the Istanbul Alteryx users group in 2015 to share knowledge. We have 290 subscribers as of today. I started my own consulting business and became a referral partner in late 2015. I sold the first Alteryx license in MENA. In 2016 we started a reselling agreement with Alteryx.
I'm now a beta tester and volunteer at Alteryx for Good Co-lab helping NGOs and NFPs with Analytics propositions.
