Alteryx is one of our primary tools in our company and we use it mainly for future analytics. We are primarily trying to determine what the past has looked like and then apply predictive analytics.
Logistics improvement Analyst at a manufacturing company with 5,001-10,000 employees
Complicated to use for advanced tasks, although good for simple data mining and data extraction
Pros and Cons
- "I like the fact that you can easily blend data from different platforms."
- "Alteryx is just as complicated as coding, in my opinion."
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
I think that our success with this product is mixed. It has probably gotten some people started easily or fairly easily on extracting data. But I also think that to some extent, it puts a limitation on us, because I don't think that we really realized the training that you need in order to be really strong in the product.
What is most valuable?
I like the fact that you can easily blend data from different platforms. That is one nice feature.
Additional comment: You can connect multiple input tools to different platforms and use joins/union to either concatenate or blend data in a seamless fashion.
What needs improvement?
Alteryx brands itself as a tool that you can use to avoid having to code. In reality, however, as soon as you start with your task, it gets just a little complex. Alteryx is just as complicated as coding, in my opinion. It is great for relatively simple data mining and data extraction type tasks, and I sure that it can do very advanced things, in particular when you look at the tool installation. That said, as soon as it becomes advanced, it is not very easy to use. In fact, it's quite complicated, so when persons with a coding background attempt to use it, they fall back on trying to code something, instead.
The biggest complaint that I have is that the online help is not very comprehensive. It is very formal, but there are not a lot of examples and use cases, and there are many signs there are difficult to understand. I think that it's a challenge.
In the future, I would like to see improvements made to the machine learning capabilities such that they are comparable with Python.

For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Alteryx for three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
My impression is that it's quite stable. You can easily make small mistakes that have an impact. For example, we use Alteryx gallery and sometimes it seems what when you have a relative path versus an absolute one, it is tricky to keep track of.
How are customer service and support?
I have never spoken with technical support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
This is my first job in analytics where I have used a dedicated tool. Prior to that, I did some work that involved coding.
What other advice do I have?
Although I use this product regularly, I used to code for many years and I am not a big fan of tools like Alteryx. I don't think that it's a good product, and the reason is that when the use cases get more complex, the models get exponentially larger and more complex to put together.
My advice for anybody who is implementing this product is not to underestimate the need for training, in particular, when your use cases get a little more complex.
I would rate this solution a five out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Our in-house team deployed this solution; it was a quick process.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I don't know much about the licensing, but there are some additional costs for certain features.
What other advice do I have?
I would definitely recommend this solution to other interested companies. The real question is: do you really want people doing self-service analytics?
On a scale from one to ten, I would give Alteryx a rating of eight.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Product Manager at a tech services company with 201-500 employees
Scalable, easy to set up, and has a simple GUI
Pros and Cons
- "The GUI is simple and it integrates with Python."
- "We are hoping that the NLP features will also support Chinese characters."
What is our primary use case?
We are mainly using Alteryx for data preparation and processing data.
We are also monitoring for some of our customers, in product analysis, regressions or customer segmentations, and column correlations analysis.
What is most valuable?
The GUI is simple and it integrates with Python.
What needs improvement?
For the area in Alteryx, such as the server the prices are high and it would be better to reduce the fees.
Some of the new tools in the intelligence Suite are the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and the Natural Language Processing (NLP) language for English characters. We are hoping that the NLP features will also support Chinese characters.
For how long have I used the solution?
We started carrying Alteryx in February of this year, 2020.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Alteryx is a stable product.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
This is a very scalable solution. For every organization or company, there are a few data scientists working with Alteryx. For some of the enterprise, they have a team of five working with this solution, whereas others have two.
How are customer service and technical support?
Community support is good, but I have not yet contacted technical support. I am not able to assess them.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
As a Data Scientist Platform, Alteryx is the first platform that we have worked with.
I have worked with IBM and some other vendors from Hong Kong.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is easy, straightforward, and simple.
Within hours, I can have the designer up and running.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The price for Alteryx Designer is reasonable but the price of the Alteryx Server for universal collaborations is too expensive.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I am currently doing a comparison between Data IQ and Alteryx.
What other advice do I have?
Most of our clients in Hong Kong are on-premises because they don't want to share the data on the Cloud.
We use several other products because we want a unified platform for our customers.
If you have experience with Excel, macros, or VBA then you have a great foundation to use Alteryx.
I would rate Alteryx an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Solutions Consultant at a tech services company with 1,001-5,000 employees
A complete solution with very good user experience and a nice user interface
Pros and Cons
- "The solution has a very strong community that is involved in the product. It helps make the usage easier and helps us find answers to our questions."
- "There's a big jump in terms of pricing between license tiers. I'm not sure I understand why the price jumps are so high."
What is our primary use case?
We're using the solution primarily to clean up some of our customer CRM data and to integrate it with some of our Salesforce requirements.
What is most valuable?
The UX (user experience) is quite good on this solution. The UI (user interface) is also excellent.
The solution has a very strong community that is involved in the product. It helps make the usage easier and helps us find answers to our questions.
What needs improvement?
For the most part, the solution is very complete, and there isn't much missing.
The designer license lacks a few features that the server has.
There's a big jump in terms of pricing between license tiers. I'm not sure I understand why the price jumps are so high.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for just over a year at this point. It hasn't been too long.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of the solution is very good. It's reliable. We have not experienced issues like bugs and glitches. It doesn't crash.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Only a small number of people use the solution in our organization. There are about four people on it. They are a mix of engineers, architects, and some data integration specialists.
There is a possibility to scale the solution. For the designer license, it's quite possible. Another server may be required, however.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support has been very good. I'd rate it ten out of ten. We're quite satisfied with the level of service we've been provided. They are helpful.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We did previously use R and Python solutions before we switched to Alteryx. They were okay, but a bit difficult to work with.
Alteryx is easier to set up and implement. It allowed us to also focus on different aspects of the business.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is simple. It's very straightforward. I wouldn't describe the implementation as complex.
Deployment takes about an hour if a user is installing the regular application.
The solution does not require maintenance.
What about the implementation team?
In terms of the installation, I had to request the process from IT. However, it was fairly simple. I did the initial implementation of the platform. That said, I did require the help of some of our data scientists. It was all in-house. We didn't require the help of an integrator or consultant.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I don't have any idea how much the solution costs. I don't deal with that aspect of the solution. I do believe the pricing is publicly listed on their website.
What other advice do I have?
We're simply users of the solution. We don't have a professional relationship with Alteryx.
We're currently using the designer license, however, I'm not sure of the exact version I'm currently on right now. I believe it is the latest version.
There's a 14-day free trial for those organizations that would like to try the solution before they commit to anything.
I would recommend the solution, 100%. It basically has everything we need. While we don't have all the features on offer in our particular license, it does have everything we need, and if our needs change, we can always move up to the next tier.
I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Director, Innovation & Analytics at a tech services company with 1-10 employees
Advance analytics with code-free usage, and a user-friendly interface for non-users
Pros and Cons
- "The design portion of this tool is easy to use without code, which his something that something we can appreciate."
- "There are no ready models to use in analytics."
What is our primary use case?
We are using this solution mostly for ETL purposes, and we have just started using advanced analytics, demand forecasting, and some supply chain optimization tasks.
What is most valuable?
The design portion of this tool is easy to use without code, which his something that something we can appreciate. We can say it's code-free usage.
What needs improvement?
There are no ready models to use in analytics. There is no content. You have the tools but you don't have the content.
In the next release, I would like to see Auto Machine Learning.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for three years.
We have just upgraded to the latest version.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This is a stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
This solution is scalable.
We have ten users in our company, who are engineers and business analysts.
How are customer service and technical support?
Team members have contacted technical support for troubleshooting purposes. The technical support is sufficient.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Previously, we were using Microsoft System Servers. Alteryx has a more user-friendly interface allowing more non-users to use it.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was simple. Just connect to a couple of data sources and transform the data. It took about three months to deploy.
We do the maintenance of what has already been developed.
What about the implementation team?
We did not use a vendor, we did the implementation on our own.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There are some implementation services and internal effort costs at the beginning but there is nothing else.
What other advice do I have?
This is a product that I recommend.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
Director at a non-tech company with 11-50 employees
Stable and very fast with good scalability options
Pros and Cons
- "The product is very stable and super fast, five-star. It's significantly more stable than it's nearest competitor."
- "The only area where the product lags is documentation and videos on the analytical app and the batch macro."
What is our primary use case?
Our clients buy the product license and then ask us to configure and set it up for them. We also provide training on product use and act as troubleshooters if customers have problems. The company has a 15-member team that provides training and consulting on multiple technologies.
We have clients who are from tax, audit, and automation. They also use Automation Anywhere and Robotic Process Automation Application.
There are three primary use cases for this product.
Firstly, we have a case study that involved lot of buy and sell transactions in Dubai (real estate). We wanted to create a model that takes up all the data sets that are frequently upgraded, and then be able to extract a ballpark transaction value based on multiple parameters. A big task was to sanitize the data including how to handle incomplete data sets.
Secondly, it is used to automate reconciliation of tax related system entries. For example, or for tax reconciliation such as a client in India where there is something similar to VAT called GST, a requirement to reconcile different transactions and make sure both party's accounting books match.
Finally, there is a case where you have your own accounting software such as SAP and it has to talk to another software application, which is not SAP compatible so we use Alteryx.
What is most valuable?
There's no single feature I can think of that stands out as being the most valuable, but we've worked on multiple areas such as analytical apps, especially to connect with Facebook, LinkedIn, and multiple other online data APIs. We also use batch macros to automate and repeat steps many times over. These two features help us a lot. They are slightly more advanced, so it's not for a regular user, but these are the areas where people ask for assistance.
What needs improvement?
I think the only area where the product lags is documentation and videos on the analytical app and the batch macro. We have learned the hard way, but I see people struggling there. Secondly, the tools for data science are not as user-friendly as KNIME.
Additional features that could be included would be improved documentation, more user-friendly data science, and the pricing should be more competitive.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been working with the product for 1.5 years. My team has been working with it for 3+ years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The product is very stable and super fast, also five-star. In fact, the reason people use Alteryx is that it's fast. It's significantly more stable than the nearest competitor.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability is excellent, five-star.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support is very forthcoming in helping people out.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We use several solutions for our clients. The two main ones are Alteryx and KNIME. Probably 90% use Alteryx and 10% KNIME.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is straightforward.
What other advice do I have?
I would suggest that the decision to purchase the product should be based on a company's level of deployment. If it's for a process for a pharma company, which is a smaller enterprise. then I recommend starting with KNIME. As the data gets bigger, switch to Alteryx.
I think they should have a student version just like Tableau does. Not all the tools, but the basic top 10 or 15 tools. The reason I suggest this is because there's a huge need for Alteryx users, but because of its 14-day trial period, a lot of students cannot get a handle on it so a scaled-down light version would be good.
I would rate this product an 9 out of 10.

Technology Sales & Cybersecurity Professional at a computer software company with 51-200 employees
End-users can complete analysis projects without knowing the code but there should be both cloud and on-premises options
Pros and Cons
- "The ease-of-use allows non-technical business users to directly create their own solutions without the use of additional development resources."
- "There is currently no cloud solution and this would be valuable for many clients."
What is our primary use case?
The team uses Alteryx for many things because they code various algorithms to create different dashboards. These are used as solutions for various things from sales to customer experience to whatever else the customer needs. So there are many areas where the team is using the product. There is not one, but as of now, there are some 30 different use cases that we have.
How has it helped my organization?
The ease-of-use has allowed our business users to directly create their own solutions without the use of additional development resources.
What is most valuable?
I think the most valuable feature is the ease of use for my business scientists. They do not need to be experts in R and Python coding, and they can do their complete analysis projects without knowing the code. I think that one of the biggest reasons we are depending on Alteryx.
What needs improvement?
I'm sure there is always development happening with the product, but I think there should be both cloud and on-premises options. We have not seen a cloud deployment and have not heard they will be making one available. I think if there is the cloud deployment available, it would definitely be more convenient for some users to engage with and use while lowering the implementation costs.
Cloud deployment would be easier for us and our clients because a lot of services that we push to the clients are through the cloud only. It is expensive to buy additional licensing, and it is time and resource consuming to install onto our own hardware — which itself requires maintenance and administrative attention. On-premises can raise the cost of deployment over just using a cloud enrollment option.
For how long have I used the solution?
We are one of the main solution providers in the region and we have been using this solution for almost two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable. We experience no bugs, glitches or crashes.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We can scale usage of the product as much as we want and we do that depending on the instructions that we have from the client. It is quite scalable in that regard.
We have more than 50 users who are using this solution within our company. They are a mix of data scientists, administration and business users as well.
Alteryx is used quite extensively in our organization and we are planning to increase the usage in the short term.
How are customer service and technical support?
We are sometimes in touch with Alteryx technical support. If I had to evaluate them, the waiting times are not long, the response, in general, is pretty good. So we are satisfied with their support work.
How was the initial setup?
I would say the initial setup is straightforward. It takes the technical team just a few days to deploy this solution. It is deployed in days, not months or weeks.
In terms of deployment, you only really need one person to complete it and that is good enough. You might use two technicians depending on the skill set, the scale of the deployment and the business areas the client focuses on. The maintenance is pretty cheap. The same people that do the deployment manage it for us.
What about the implementation team?
We do not use an integrator, seller or consultant for the deployment as our team has training and they do these things.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We have a yearly cost that we pay for the licensing. We do not pay any costs in addition to the licensing fees. The technical support is included as part of the fees that we pay.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before we choose Alteryx, we did weigh other options from different vendors. In fact, we still use other technologies. We cannot properly service client needs by just using Alteryx as the only solution we offer. Because client needs differ, we are using other products that we evaluated and determined were also serviceable technologies to deliver for client use.
What other advice do I have?
Advice that I would give to people considering Alteryx as a solution depends on the real needs from business to business and in accord with what use cases they have. I think Alteryx definitely takes away the potential problem of having to have a lot of technical expertise. Any business user can use Alteryx to develop their business case and use the program's options much quicker without having the technical knowledge and programming know-how. It really depends on the skills and resources of the individuals in the company. They should use Alteryx if they want users to be able to walk through the process and deploy their own use cases without having a deeper technical knowledge and skills that other products may require.
What we have learned from using the product is that it is definitely a great advantage for the business users to not need to have great technical skills and programming knowledge to complete their analysis. The business users can build their own analytical use case, visualize what they want to do more easily and quickly, and revise it without any dependencies on other staff and additional communications.
On a scale from one to ten where one is the worst and ten is the best, I would rate this product as a seven-out-of-ten.

The solution could work on the BI side of the tool to make it a bit better.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been working with the solution for five or six months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I've liked working with Alteryx so far.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is totally scalable. Users can work with the data at all levels and determine if you want to scale it. You just have to choose the product model with the larger amount of data.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support is very good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I've worked with other solutions such as Knime, among others, however, in a corporate environment, I've only worked with Alteryx.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is very straightforward. You just need to go through the manual. Reading it makes everything easy.
Each deployment is different. Some jobs seem easy, but then the back end is complex. Other times it can be deployed in practically one click. It all depends on the customer requirements.
What other advice do I have?
We're Alteryx partners. We handle various deployment models, depending on the client's needs.
I've worked with other solutions such as Knime, among other tools for data science and data prep. It's great that this solution is just drag and drop and easy.
I'd recommend the solution. I'd rate it 9.5 out of ten.
