Offers very good data transformation with good scheduling and a straightforward setup
Pros and Cons
  • "The scheduling within the solution is excellent."
  • "It's a technical product and those that don't have proper training will have to deal with a steep learning curve."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for data processing and ETL.

What is most valuable?

Overall, I'd have to say the tool is pretty awesome.

The solution offers very good data transformation.

Users are able to read in from any source, combine heterogeneous sources, and providing output or input to the next downstream step. You can put these things together or you can create very complex or simple flows and then tie them together.

The scheduling within the solution is excellent.

The initial setup is straightforward.

What needs improvement?

I can't recall a feature that may be lacking. Overall, we've been happy with the solution.

It's a technical product and those that don't have proper training will have to deal with a steep learning curve.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for over five years now. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is reliable and quite durable. We haven't dealt with bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's very stable. We're happy with it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution scales quite well. If a company needs to expand it, it should be able to do so easily.

How are customer service and support?

We don't deal with technical support often. We typically have had other people to do that for us within our organization. That said, the support has been there to accommodate us in terms of the different and pretty stiff information security policies and standards. We're mostly satisfied with the level of service.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex at all. We found it easy. It was straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't handle the licensing aspect of the product. I can say that we have to have an enterprise license. Currently and periodically that gets challenged and they try to take it away and we honestly have a hard time finding a tool that could replace it. Therefore, we wind up keeping it. It's happened several times.

What other advice do I have?

We're a corporate user and end-user of the product.

While I don't know the version number off the top of my head, I can say with certainty that we are using the latest one.

The solution is going to be best for technical users or people that have hands-on experience with data such as data scientists or people that can be creative and deal with multiple different databases and different permutations in the structured query language right across those different databases.

It's fairly standard, however, not completely, and so, people in that realm tend to be able to function well, people that are analysts may struggle and have a bit of a learning curve that they have to deal with. I've been doing this throughout the information life cycle - about 35 years plus. Therefore, for me, it's my second nature. Others that haven't been exposed to technology over that timeframe may struggle.

I'd rate the solution ten out of ten.

Nice dashboard and good customizations but can be complex
Pros and Cons
  • "There are a lot of good customization capabilities."
  • "The solution can be quite complex in some aspects."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for all machine learning projects, including perspective molding. We're using it for our marketing efforts.

What is most valuable?

It keeps on upgrading, which is nice. It's always updating with new releases.

A majority of people at our organization like the drag and drop features.

The database is very good.

Overall, the solution as a whole is extremely useful.

The initial setup is easy.

The security on the solution is pretty good.

It has a very nice dashboard.

There are a lot of good customization capabilities.

What needs improvement?

With some of the features in the database, they don't offer certain things, like Keynote or transposing. I'm not sure, if, with the latest update, they've added these capabilities in or not.

The solution can be quite complex in some aspects.

For some specific coders, it's still is a kind of concern that they don't have coding options available. We're moving to Dataiku due to the fact that it caters to both coders and clickers (those who prefer drag and drop).

For how long have I used the solution?

I'd say I've been working with the solution for two to three years now. I've been using Alteryx for all my data scientist projects.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution, for the most part, is pretty stable. We don't seem to have too many issues with it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution can scale to some extent.

We have about 200 to 300 users on the solution currently.

How are customer service and technical support?

While the community support offered by the solution is great, if you need to directly contact technical support, it's not so good. Often there are long queues and it takes a while to get help.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I've been using Alteryx for all my data scientist projects up until recently. However, now I'm shifting to Dataiku, which my organization is offering instead.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not too complex. It's pretty straightforward. We found it to be rather easy. However, there are certain implementations that can be a little more complex.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the implementation ourselves in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'm not sure of the exact cost of the solution. It's not an aspect of the product I deal with directly.

What other advice do I have?

We're just a customer. We don't have a business relationship with Alteryx.

I haven't updated to the latest version yet. I'm unsure which version of the solution I'm currently using.

We are, as an organization, shifting and moving away from the solution. We are now going to utilize a new tool that is being selected. Due to some complexities in Alteryx, we are moving away from it.

Overall, I'd rate it seven out of ten. It has a lot going for it, however, we need a solution that's less complex and offers more coding capabilities.

Great performance and modelling features; very user friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "The modeling features are very good."
  • "There are a few imputation techniques which they really need to include."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is for ML related and deep learning related things like data cleaning and and then later we work on machine learning. I'm a business analyst and we are customers of Alteryx.

What is most valuable?

The modelling features are very good in Alteryx and better than what you'd find in open-source software. Python and R rule the market. Although Alteryx is a paid software, it is equally able to provide better performance without writing a single line of code. That's the USP of the software as such. It's very user friendly.

What needs improvement?

There are a few imputation techniques which they really need to include. Things you'd find in Python. And there are advanced techniques coming in every day there. Alteryx needs to update more quickly. There are also a few things from geospatial or updating perspectives that are still better in open-source software than what you find in Alteryx.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In terms of stability, we haven't had glitches or issues with the software.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have had contact with technical support in license related things, but it's more community based where you can learn and resolve things if you have hiccups. If there are any issues, the technical support will resolve it for us. We have seven people in the company using this solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex.

What other advice do I have?

I think Alteryx is a good software to work with. It's user-friendly and more accurate than other products in terms of the predictions and modelling.

I would rate this solution an eight out of 10.

Stable, scalable, and offers excellent drag and drop features
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution has excellent drag and drop functionality. There's no need for coding."
  • "The solution just lacks in terms of data visualization. That is why we use Tableau and Qlik in our organization. They help to pick up the slack. If data visualization was added, Alteryx would be a very good tool, and much more complete."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for ETL purposes and also for a lot of our modeling and scheduling.

What is most valuable?

The solution has excellent drag and drop functionality. There's no need for coding. There are nodes ready for us to use as well. It makes everything extremely easy. The user-friendliness is a big draw for us.

What needs improvement?

The solution just lacks in terms of data visualization. That is why we use Tableau and Qlik in our organization. They help to pick up the slack. If data visualization was added, Alteryx would be a very good tool, and much more complete.

The solution could maybe use a connector as a direct input for MySQL or something like that. Right now, we use ODBC connectors for MySQL. If a direct connector was available on this product that would be very helpful, especially for our organization.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good. We don't have issues with the product crashing and we don't find there are bugs and glitches that affect its quality. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is very smooth. If a company needs to expand the service, they should be able to do so easily.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is great.

There's a very good community that surrounds the solution. However, you can also reach out to Alteryx directly as well. They're just a call away if you need them. I would say our organization is satisfied with the level of service they provide.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of the solution is a bit on the expensive side. We use an Alteryx Server and Designer as well. The server itself is a bit pricey.

What other advice do I have?

We're just a customer. We don't have a business relationship with the company.

Our organization is dealing with large amounts of data, yet we do not have the money to buy a Microsoft product like SQL. Alteryx is a pretty good alternative to handle the ETL part of the workload.

We've been largely satisfied with the solution.

I would rate the solution eight out of ten overall. We've been happy with the results that have been provided to us so far. If the solution offered a connector as a direct input for MySQL, or better data visualization, I'd rate it higher.

Good data preparation and machine learning capabilities have helped improve decision making
Pros and Cons
  • "Alteryx has made us more agile and increased the speed and effectiveness of decision making."
  • "The server is too expensive for what you get and it really a designer desktop on a server."

What is our primary use case?

We have many use cases for this solution.

For example, we used it for data prep and blending as well as machine learning. We built customer 360, have used it for labor optimization, and demand forecasting.

How has it helped my organization?

Alteryx has made us more agile and increased the speed and effectiveness of decision making.

What is most valuable?

All of the features are valuable to us.

The data prep and blending are great but so is the machine learning functionality.

We used spatial analysis, which is a good feature.

What needs improvement?

The server is too expensive for what you get and it is really a designer desktop on a server. It is not worth the money.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Alteryx for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is fairly stable and we have had no major issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

With respect to scalability, it is rather good at handling large data sets.

How are customer service and technical support?

Grazitti Interactive is very responsive and very helpful.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use another solution prior to this one.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy.

What about the implementation team?

We used Grazitti Interative. They are excellent!

What was our ROI?

We did not calculate a specific ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The server pricing is high.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate other options before choosing Alteryx.

Does a good job of end-to-end integration as well as accessing data from multiple sources or email modes
Pros and Cons
  • "This is a drag-and-drop tool which is easy-to-use and yet can be customized by creating your own components."
  • "The GUI interface functions but it could stand to be updated to a more modern look and feel."

What is our primary use case?

I am using the product for making machine learning models for particular uses that we have to focus on analytics.

What is most valuable?

I didn't like the data analysis features at first, but they were actually quite good. The built-in machine-learning models that they have are quite extensive and useful. There are a few models that are normally not found in any other drag-and-drop interface platforms. For example, when I was using and testing other tools, I could not find vector autoregression models. I also could not find the rather complicated tentative models and other model types that I find very useful. Those are built-in to Alteryx as cubes. On top of that, the capability of writing Python commands and creating our own tools and our own models for machine learning make the solution customizable and quite interesting.

What needs improvement?

There are a few ways the solution could be made better. The graphical user interface could be made more friendly. I mean from the GUI point of view, it is a little dated. But from a functionality point of view, I think even for people who do not know the coding part and who are more business users than programmers, they would not have a very hard time using  Alteryx for creating machine learning models. It is quite good and quite useful already without improvement to the GUI. It could just stand to be more modern-looking.

I would like if they could make some type of free license for the product. Not a free full license but a limited edition or limited capability free version. The limited-time version is a little restrictive. A free, open-term desktop version like Power BI and Tableau and KNIME might help users more with discovery and utility.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used this solution for about five or six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We were using Alteryx from a development point of view. We did not use it to test it to its breakage point. So it handled our demands and was quite stable.

The response time was quite good. Even running on a laptop, it was like using it on my desktop. The response is consistent, fast and stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

From my experience and from my point of view, the solution is quite scalable. We did not use it for the production system yet, but from my experience of using it on a laptop more recently, it runs with a few hundred thousand rows and columns without a problem.

The other good side of the scalability is the number of connectors available for data sources. They have more than 200 connectors, which allows access to well more sources than anything I have needed.

How are customer service and technical support?

I did not contact the technical support at Alteryx directly. When we initially got the license, they had us talk to the local support here in Singapore. We went to them for a small issue to see what exactly the product can do and then we did not need any support from their support at all. We are quite adept with this solution and modeling. We called up the Alteryx local support to show us how to do that one thing but it was very easy. Once we saw it, we did not have additional reasons to contact them again.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Alteryx we tried of KNIME. The learning curve for KNIME is steeper than Alteryx. Alteryx is much more user-friendly than KNIME, at least from our experience on both products. Also, KNIME functionality is limited for the free version so it was harder to explore the full capabilities. When we tried the free license for Alteryx, we got the full use of the client license for 14 days and then we were able to get an extension to explore our testing of it for some time. But we did use KNIME before that for long enough to be familiar with the differences. My impression of Alteryx is that it is more user-friendly than KNIME and the built-in modeling in Alteryx is much better than KNIME.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward. I was able to install it and get it running up and running quickly and the process was very simple.

When I started doing a machine-learning model in a project writing my own code, it took me in-all about three or four days to complete it. For my initial experimentation, I decided to replicate that model in Alteryx. As someone who understood models but did not know the program at all, it took me two hours or less than that to complete the test. Once you learn how to drag-and-drop things in the interface, it is very easy to start on development as long as you know what you want to do.

What about the implementation team?

We did not use any help as far as an integrator, reseller or consultant. We did the deployment ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Our approximate cost as we understand from the company is that the total is $5,000 per user per year for the desktop production license. So, for us and the ten licenses we need, that means the production license would be around $50,000 per year. That might not be the exact number, but I think it is close enough to be correct. With that, there are not any additional costs. Probably you can pay for support and for training if you want something like a dedicated workshop. That might cost more as an add-on but there is no additional cost for using the tool itself.

What other advice do I have?

I have a really good impression of Alteryx at this point in time. So I would suggest to people who are considering this type of solution to go ahead and try it. If you are looking for a self-service data analytics tool, Alteryx is a good solution. It does a good job of end-to-end integration as well as accessing data from multiple sources or email modes. Then you can push data out to Tableau and Power BI or tools like that if you need other capabilities. So, 'go ahead and try it' would be my recommendation.

On a scale from one to ten where ten is the best and one it the worst, I would rate Alteryx as easily a solid eight. From my use case and considering the point that I'm not seeing and using everything, I can't give it more or less. But from our use case and what we have in our company, it is pretty good for several purposes.

A data integration solution with great data engineering features, but the configuration is low
Pros and Cons
  • "The three data signs and data engineering are great features."
  • "Configuration is very low."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution mostly for data integration.

What is most valuable?

The three data signs and data engineering are great features.

What needs improvement?

Configuration is very low and is not good for the customer end.

They should be focused more on regulation. They need to come onto the cloud as soon as possible.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for about a year, and have been supporting it both on cloud and on-premises.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution because it works on multiple platforms. The petabyte of solutions they have been considering can be handled.

How are customer service and support?

I rate the technical support an eight out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward because they had a suite. They have packages that need to be integrated and can be set up easily. They have different strategies for cloud and on-premises. For on-premises, they have a suite based on the license.

The deployment and maintenance require only about three technical staff. We have about three clients using this solution and plan to pitch more plans.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

They have the complete licensing package. There are yearly licenses and other combinations.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution a seven out of ten. We target different domains because Alteryx is a product that can fit all kinds of domains.

For the next release, they should focus on the cloud. They should be platform agnostic so they can be easily integrated with multiple cloud systems. It should have the capability to work as a SaaS product.
