Our primary use case of this solution is for our invoice project. We wanted to capture the sales and use tax data from our invoices. I'm a senior manager and we are currently customers of ABBYY, hoping to become resellers in the future.

Great machine learning capabilities, the software works well
Pros and Cons
- "The machine learning capability is pretty good."
- "I think the machine learning capability of ABBYY is pretty good."
- "Quite complex, particularly for those who are not tech savvy."
- "I think that the tool is really complex. It works well, but in terms of rolling it out to a large audience that is not very tech savvy, this tool might be a little too much for them to handle."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
I think the machine learning capability of ABBYY is pretty good. You can create your small frame model and then the software works well, applying that training to extract the data out of other invoices.
What needs improvement?
I think that the tool is really complex. It works well, but in terms of rolling it out to a large audience that is not very tech savvy, this tool might be a little too much for them to handle. I think there needs to be some sort of simplification for that kind of user. ABBYY has the FlexiLayout Studio tool which is used for creating layouts for semi-structured and unstructured documents. It's pretty complex and we'd like to see some simplification there.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using this solution for four months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I think that once it is installed, the solution is stable. There are no issues that come up.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
When it comes to scalability, you might need to install multiple instances of these stations. It comes in two pieces, one is a server and one is the stations. The stations can be scaled up, and can connect to the centralized server and work well, but I think that if you wanted to have it scaled for a large number of users you might have to think about creating some wrappers around it.
We have a user base of around 50 to 100 people but we are gradually rolling it out, so I think right now we only have 20 users who are actively using it, but down the road we expect that to come close to 100.
How are customer service and support?
In general, the ABBYY support is pretty good. They are very responsive and try to resolve any issues.
How was the initial setup?
I think installation is pretty straightforward, except that if you are using a distributed version, then there are some prerequisites in terms of IAS that need to be installed beforehand. That makes it a little challenging, but I think if you have the right support from ABBYY you can manage that easily.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The ABBYY license is calculated by pages and it all depends on how you negotiate the licensing with them. If you have a pretty large use case, you might get some discounts, but if you have a pretty small use case, they might be firm on the price.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We did our due diligence on a number of solutions and we found ABBYY to be more widely known and they've received pretty good reviews. That's why we chose them along with the fact that their licensing is decent enough. The other solutions we looked at were not as good as ABBYY and were more expensive.
What other advice do I have?
I think each company needs to make a judgment as to whether you can handle a technically challenging solution, because ABBYY is challenging. If you need to have your people trained ahead of time to get some support built into your organization, you should do that. If your organization is not very tech savvy, this solution might not work for you very well.
We still need to carry out more evaluations. For example, the out of the box, SDK support. I'd like to know how much free SDK support we would get if we try to build a wrapper around ABBYY. I think those are the things that we need to evaluate on our end, but overall I think we are pretty happy with this tool.
I think this is a good solution and would rate it an eight out of 10.

Document workflow program capable of extracting and identifying specific fields and special characters
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature of this solution is its ability to extract content from documents. It is able to identify specific fields and special characters."
- "The most valuable feature of this solution is its ability to extract content from documents."
- "This solution could be improved by offering better integration with other platforms."
- "This solution could be improved by offering better integration with other platforms."
What is our primary use case?
We use this solution for invoice processing.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of this solution is its ability to extract content from documents. It is able to identify specific fields and special characters. We are able to train the tool to identify certain sets of fields based on specific definitions. This solution is also user-friendly.
What needs improvement?
This solution could be improved by offering better integration with other platforms. They have released the connectors for all other RPA tools such as Blue Prism UiPath, but this integration is quite challenging to use. It's not very straightforward or easy to understand for a non-technical person. The integration should be configured in such a way that anyone can understand it and use it.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for six to eight months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
ABBYY is a user-friendly and stable product. ABBYY is more flexible and stable compared to a solution like Kofax.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
This is definitely a scalable solution.
How are customer service and support?
The customer support team are knowledgeable and responsive. Their response depends on the license that you hold with them. Their licenses come with predefined response and SLA times. If you are a golden license holder, you will receive a response within three to four hours.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
There are different sets of initial configurations and this depends on the use case. We have standalone and multi-server setups. Being a consultant, I configured ABBYY FlexiCapture myself. I could easily go through their documentation and figure out what needed to be done and how it needed to be done. The documentation is user-friendly.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
They have a trial license that is limited to a certain number of pages. The paid license varies from six months to one year depending on the number of documents that need to be processed. We are a consulting firm and our license model depends on customer requirements.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

C Data and Documents For Automation at PRTi Digital
Great accuracy, trustworthy, with easy setup
Pros and Cons
- "I like that it has the capability of processing a high volume of documents with great accuracy."
- "There is no other IDP solution able to scale as ABBYY FlexiCapture; they not only have the OCR and the ability to contextualize it, but the ability to scale and process millions of pages, and I have not seen anything like it in the market."
- "I think that technical support should help instead of developing a solution from scratch every time you reach out to them."
- "I think that technical support should help instead of developing a solution from scratch every time you reach out to them."
What is our primary use case?
I work with document automation where we have to create settings to understand if all the documents are there to be processed or if there is something missing. I gather the data from these documents, making them available for any automation like UiPath.
What is most valuable?
I like that it has the capability of processing a high volume of documents with great accuracy, and also the possibility of creating layers with APIs and robotic process automation. We can use these layers to connect and create an automation for the data that are available from the paper source or document source.
What needs improvement?
They have a product called Mobile Web Capture that connects with ABBYY FlexiCapture and it is a separate feature. I think they should embed Mobile Web Capture as a standard feature.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using ABBYY Flexi Capture for the past ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
ABBYY FlexiCapture is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
There is no other IDP solution able to scale as ABBYY FlexiCapture. They don't only have the OCR and the ability to contextualize it, but the ability to scale and process million of pages, I have not seen anything like it in the market.
How are customer service and support?
When you reach technical support for some idea of writitng simple scripts, they want you to speak to professional services. There are two parts to technical support. One is the professional service team where you are charged every time you try to reach them. And the other is the support. The support should be able to give the most basic information to the customers like simple scripts. They are not allowed to provide simple funciotnalities scripts. You have to contact the professional sales team. Many of these small problems can be solved quickly by technical support.
Professional Services know everything you need about the tool.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Setup is easy. There are some specific jobs that need some scripts to call the functionalities of this solution. You do not have a map to follow how-to read some specific functionalities. But most of our processes, ninety-five percent of them, we were able to process and create from the tool itself, the user interface, and by adding some simple scripts.
What other advice do I have?
You can trust ABBYY FlexiCapture. It is a smart solution and has many functionalities. I can recommend instead other low-cost and no-cost solutions.
You can not compare ABBYY FlexiCapture with anything else on the market. On a scale of one to ten, I rate ABBYY FlexiCapture a ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Private Cloud

Software Engineer at a tech services company with 501-1,000 employees
Helpful documentation, good support, and performs well for document extraction tasks
Pros and Cons
- "The initial setup is not difficult. The vendor provides technical documents to assist with deployment."
- "The most valuable feature is the accuracy of document extraction."
- "The accuracy changes depending on the scenario so you need to test it before committing to this solution."
- "The accuracy changes depending on the scenario so you need to test it before committing to this solution."
What is our primary use case?
We are an implementor and we create solutions for our clients. One of the products that we use is ABBYY FlexiCapture.
We are currently implementing a use case for capturing bank statements. Using ABBYY FlexiCapture, we are working to capture the check statements with different fonts that include the value, payee name, and date of birth.
What is most valuable?
This product makes intelligent automatic documentation predictions, and for our use case and what we are targeting, the accuracy is 90%.
The most valuable feature is the accuracy of document extraction. If you compare it to other applications, such as IQ Bot, or products on AWS, FlexiCapture is much better.
What needs improvement?
The accuracy changes depending on the scenario so you need to test it before committing to this solution.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The is a stable product.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
FlexiCapture is scalable.
How are customer service and support?
I would rate the technical support a nine out of ten.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I also use IQ Bot and UiPath. ABBYY is easier to use than these other products.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is not difficult. The vendor provides technical documents to assist with deployment. It normally takes a few days to deploy but if there are a lot of configurations, for example with all of the network-related stuff, it takes more time.
For the deployment, between three and five people are enough. The maintenance can be handled by two people.
What other advice do I have?
My advice for anybody who is considering this product is to start with a PoC. They need to see whether it's feasible and can handle the documents that they want to capture. Before entering into an agreement to purchase the product, try different samples and different scenarios because the accuracy is different.
I would rate this solution a ten out of ten.

RPA Developer/Consultant at a tech services company with 1,001-5,000 employees
Supports on-premises installation and has good OCR engine, support, and scalability
Pros and Cons
- "Its OCR Engine is very successful, and it is the leading OCR Engine. It also has NLP support."
- "For an operational process, about 40 people were dedicated previously, but now, five people can do the same work by using ABBYY integrated with RPA."
- "Their tutorials are not enough. They can improve the tutorials and maybe add more examples in their tutorials. Currently, if you want to learn ABBYY technology, it is very difficult. There are just a few resources, such as YouTube channels and blogs. There are not many resources for learning ABBYY."
- "Its licensing price is high, and there are no training materials that you can use easily."
What is our primary use case?
We use it for document processing. We have PDF documents, and we need to extract tables from those documents. We use ABBYY FlexiCapture to extract tables.
How has it helped my organization?
We are able to extract tables from PDF files. Before ABBYY FlexiCapture, it was done manually. We had to manually input tables into our banking system. We could automate that with FlexiCapture. It is also integrated with RPA. So, FlexiCapture just extracts the information, and RPA takes that information and enters it into the banking system.
What is most valuable?
Its OCR Engine is very successful, and it is the leading OCR Engine. It also has NLP support.
In FlexiLayout Studio, you can create your own variables. It works great for semi-structured documents.
What needs improvement?
Their tutorials are not enough. They can improve the tutorials and maybe add more examples in their tutorials. Currently, if you want to learn ABBYY technology, it is very difficult. There are just a few resources, such as YouTube channels and blogs. There are not many resources for learning ABBYY.
It would be great if they can make a community edition to use ABBYY. Currently, if you want to try ABBYY, you have to contact a salesperson and take a trial license, which is complicated. They should just give a community edition or a free edition with a few features.
Its licensing is very expensive and should be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution since 2019.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We didn't encounter any crashing. It is stable, but it has some bugs. For example, the PDF quality is very good, and you can read the text easily, but sometimes, ABBYY FlexiCapture reads it incorrectly. It is not very frequent, but it can cause a problem for some of the documents.
For such bugs, we open tickets with ABBYY, and they try to solve the issue. If they are able to solve the issue, they send us the solution, and we apply that. Sometimes, they weren't able to solve it, so they took that ticket to their backlog, and after a new release, they notified us that they have solved a problem in the new release.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We don't have a problem with scalability. In the beginning, our volume of documents was small, but it has increased about 10 times. It works without any problems. If we want to increase its capacity, we put another machine, and it defines a processing station. So, we can increase its capacity easily.
Currently, I am the only one using it in my company. I do all the administration and create new templates. Its maintenance is also done by me.
We plan to increase its usage. At the moment, we are using ABBYY in just one project, but there are upcoming projects that require ABBYY.
How are customer service and technical support?
Their tech support was successful. I would give them a nine or a 10 out of 10.
How was the initial setup?
The deployment process was a little bit tricky for us. We didn't take professionals for the installation or deployment process. We learned how to deploy it from other sources such as YouTube or blogs, and we did it ourselves, but it took about a week to deploy. Now, if I want to deploy it, it will just take one or two days. At that time, we didn't have ABBYY expertise, so we learned how to do it and tried to deploy it. Three people were involved in its installation.
Its maintenance is done by me. It requires some manual effort. For example, for some templates, I do some updates, and there is some manual work. I go to document definitions and remove the other one. I then upload the new one and do some settings.
What was our ROI?
For an operational process, about 40 people were dedicated previously, but now, five people can do the same work by using ABBYY integrated with RPA. It is not just ABBYY; there is also the RPA part. ABBYY is used just for data extraction from PDF files.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Its price is a little bit high and can be lower. Its licensing is very expensive. I don't remember exactly, but for each page, it is about four or seven cents, which is too expensive.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before using ABBYY, we considered many products. We considered Ephesoft and other document processing engines, but ABBYY was the most successful one. There may be other successful vendors, but they don't have very strong support in our region. ABBYY's support is very strong in our region. Other tools also do not provide on-prem installation. They are cloud-based, so we chose ABBYY.
Their sales team was great. They were very helpful, and their technology is great.
What other advice do I have?
If you are looking for an on-prem solution, ABBYY would be better, but if you are looking for a cloud solution, you can use other platforms. Google and Microsoft have great data extraction tools that are cloud-based.
I would rate ABBYY FlexiCapture an eight out of 10. Its licensing price is high, and there are no training materials that you can use easily. There should also be a trial or community version.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
FlexiCapture is a stable product.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability has not been a problem.
How are customer service and technical support?
I would say that the technical support is average.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
This is the first data capture product that we have used.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup and preparing for our first capture was no so easy. The application used to create the database was not easy to use.
What about the implementation team?
We are the in-house team.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
For us, the price is reasonable for semi-structure and unstructured forms.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We did not evaluate other options before implementing FlexiCapture.
What other advice do I have?
My advice for anybody who is considering this product is that if they have many different types of documents that need to be captured, then this is a good option.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case is for invoicing. We use it for product licenses and reports about insurance policies and invoices.
What is most valuable?
It's a very useful and user-friendly product.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is very good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We use around 100% of data and the success rate is 90%.
We have around fifty users using this solution. The users are mostly engineers and developers.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was straightforward.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten. Not a ten because sometimes some documents have handwritten data. If this improved, I would rate it a ten out of ten.
The product is user-friendly. I would recommend it.

Technical Project Manager at a tech services company with 1,001-5,000 employees
Easy to deploy and for a non-technical person to use, with good handwriting recognition accuracy
Pros and Cons
- "The handwriting recognition is very good, as it can recognize handwriting done with pen and paper with at least 70% accuracy."
- "If you are having problems with handwritten text and the recognition of data then ABBYY is the place to go."
- "In the future, I would like to see integration with Google Sheets."
- "Our basic concern is that ABBYY does not allow you to use the product unless you are a trained professional."
What is our primary use case?
We are a solution provider and ABBEY FlexiCapture is one of the products that we implement for our clients. It is an OCR tool that we use as part of different automation solutions.
What is most valuable?
It is flexible and easy to deploy into any environment, be it on-premises or in the cloud.
The handwriting recognition is very good, as it can recognize handwriting done with pen and paper with at least 70% accuracy.
The interface is very easy for a non-technical person to use. For example, the fields that have been correctly identified are color-coded green, whereas the exceptions are color-coded red.
What needs improvement?
Our basic concern is that ABBYY does not allow you to use the product unless you are a trained professional. This has been a roadblock for some of our clients because they have been okay with the pricing, but because they are not an expert on ABBEY, they are not able to use it.
In the future, I would like to see integration with Google Sheets. That way, if somebody has data in another format then ABBEY can pull it out and work with it directly.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using ABBYY FlexiCapture for more than two and a half years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This is a pretty stable platform.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have not found any issues with scalability.
The majority of our clients are small to medium-sized businesses with less than $500,000 USD annual revenue. We do have some enterprise-level clients that have a revenue of more than $1,000,000 USD per year.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support is pretty good. The ABBYY support teams are very good and there is an open community, which is very supportive as well. We normally get a response within about six hours of creating a ticket.
How was the initial setup?
It is very easy to set up. The deployment takes around 48 hours, end to end.
What other advice do I have?
This is absolutely a solution that I would recommend. If you are having problems with handwritten text and the recognition of data then ABBYY is the place to go.
I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.
