What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Microsoft Project Server is a scalable solution. We have 25 people using it.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward if you are familiar with the Chatbot solution of Microsoft.

The initial deployment took about six months because I was working on other projects at the same time.

What about the implementation team?

We deployed the solution ourselves. Our team consisted of four engineers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Microsoft Project Server is an expensive solution. Small businesses will not be able to afford it.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate Microsoft Project Server at six out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

reliable with a good user interface but needs faster support
Pros and Cons
  • "It's fine to navigate for a layperson."
  • "It is not updated in real-time. Sometimes it, therefore, is not accurate."

What is our primary use case?

I primarily use the solution for plans and projects. I use it to handle timelines and scheduling. It's primarily used for project implementation. We use it to improve and keep track of project status.

What is most valuable?

The user interface is okay. It's fine to navigate for a layperson.

As an end-user, I haven't gotten too technical with it.

It is stable.

The solution can scale.

What needs improvement?

I don't have any specific notes for improvement. I do not require any more functionality.

I've had some issues with Project Server from time to time. It is not updated in real-time. Sometimes it, therefore, is not accurate.

Technical support could be more efficient.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is okay. It has some issues with lagging. I'd rate the general stability eight or nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is good. I'd rate it nine out of ten. It extends well.

At my previous company, many people used the solution, including managers and coordinators.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support often asks the same questions over and over. We'll get referred to a new person, and they will ask the same questions, which can be frustrating.

While problems do get solved, sometimes the response time is slow, and the process is repetitive.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of the solution was something I did not take part in.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is affordable. It's not overly expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I've only used Project Server and have not compared it to others.

What other advice do I have?

I did work for a Microsoft gold partner.

I keep the solution up to date. I recently updated it in February.

I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Good resource management and cost management capabilities with helpful support services
Pros and Cons
  • "It can scale well."
  • "The solution needs to be much more stable."

What is our primary use case?

When it comes to enterprise projects, we need a consolidated environment where we can interlink all project management activities, including the cost, resources, timeline, and the whole landscape of project management and portfolio management. We needed enterprise resource planning, and we implemented this for the organization.

How has it helped my organization?

It helps us integrate the projects. We can handle cost analysis, resource analysis, task analysis, and all the basic factors that should be covered and are important for any project.

What is most valuable?

Resource management and cost management are very critical features for us.

It can scale well.

Technical support is helpful.

What needs improvement?

The solution needs to be much more stable.

The project support is missing. We tend to use Primavera as opposed to MS Project when we are doing engineering or large-scale projects.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for six years or so.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It isn't stable enough. This is something Microsoft needs to work on.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is quite scalable. It extends well.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support has been very good. We are pleased with their level of support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have used Primavera in place of Microsoft Project on a few projects.

How was the initial setup?

It is not too complex to set up. It is actually pretty straightforward.

What was our ROI?

We have noted an ROI while using the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is moderate. Something like Primavera is more expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I am not using the latest version. I'm on the 2017 version.

If you have a Microsoft environment and aren't working on too complex a project, it is quite good and a solution.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Highly detail dependencies information, useful tracking, but lacking accessibility
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of the Microsoft Project Server is the level of detail with which I can break down a task and check the dependencies."

What is our primary use case?

I am using Microsoft Project Server for managing projects, such as all the tasks-related activities are tracked.

How has it helped my organization?

When a project is complicated this solution monitors every task allowing us to have better control of the projects.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of the Microsoft Project Server is the level of detail with which I can break down a task and check the dependencies.

What needs improvement?

The solution could improve the ease of access could improve. It can be time-consuming.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Microsoft Project Server for approximately one year.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Microsoft Project Server a seven out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have approximately 100 to 500 users using Microsoft Project Server.

How are customer service and support?

The support we have received is good.

Good project scheduling and collaboration but needs better reports
Pros and Cons
  • "It's stable and reliable."
  • "This provides an enterprise version and a centralized environment, where every project manager is contributing and we are getting clear visibility of the projects we are running."
  • "We are on the on-prem version. The cloud, however, gives more regular updates that we can take advantage of."
  • "It's very expensive to scale out."

What is our primary use case?

We are basically using it for project monitoring, scheduling, and resource utilization. We have some custom reports, in which we have used SQL server reporting services.

How has it helped my organization?

Before, we were doing project management and project management activities. However, it was siloed. This provides an enterprise version and a centralized environment. Everybody, every project manager, is contributing. We are getting clear visibility of the projects we are running.

What is most valuable?

We like the project scheduling and collaboration, as well as the rule optimization.

It's stable and reliable.

What needs improvement?

We are on the on-prem version. The cloud, however, gives more regular updates that we can take advantage of. On-premises needs more regular updates.

The Project Server reporting is not very powerful unless you have another tool or other thing integrated with it.

Collaboration potential can be increased.

It's very expensive to scale out.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the solution for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. It's reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution isn't highly scalable. We do not have plans to scale due to the high cost.

We have 30 to 40 people using the product. It's a mix of project managers and some management or reporting. We also have some general team members.

How are customer service and support?

Support is available. It's a very popular kind of solution so you can get help easily.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I may have used a different solution, however, I cannot recall which solution. We're a new department. We didn't switch from something per se.

How was the initial setup?

It's not straightforward to set up - unless the person knows it. Then they can set it up with ease.

The deployment took about one week.

You only need about two to three people to maintain the solution, however, they do not have to be fully committed. It's only a few hours a week.

What about the implementation team?

Our team handled the deployment with some IT involvement.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

A different department handled the licensing. I can't speak to exact costs.

There is expense in the case of maintenance. If you need some person to maintain it, since it's an on-prem solution, that's a cost. You can't measure it, however, it's a cost. It's also expensive to scale.

What other advice do I have?

I'm a customer.

If you don't want to go to the cloud, this is a good solution.

I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Project management solution that offers valuable gantt charts but could be simplified in its task management
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are the gantt charts. It's easy to use for me."
  • "The most valuable features are the gantt charts."
  • "Project Server could be improved by simplifying how tasks are assigned and reviewed on a daily basis."
  • "I don't think it's very scalable. It's not that easy to navigate or scale up and down according to your needs."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for project management for the whole company different teams in different locations.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the gantt charts. It's easy to use for me.

What needs improvement?

Project Server could be improved by simplifying how tasks are assigned and reviewed on a daily basis. This solutions integrations could be made more user friendly.

The reporting and visualizations could also be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I don't think it's very scalable. It's not that easy to navigate or scale up and down according to your needs. It has some limitations.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was difficult, especially when it comes to resource assignments. We had issues because we have a lot of other software.

If one is complex and five is straightforward, but I would rate the initial setup a two out of five.

What about the implementation team?

It was done by in-house.

What other advice do I have?

Microsoft Project Server is more suitable to small, medium size businesses instead of enterprises. I would advise others to work with a project management consultant as it is not that easy to integrate within a company.

I would rate this solution a five out of ten.

Provides a clear visualization of the action plan but could be more user-friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution has easy integration with Excel."
  • "Project Server allows us to have a clear visualization of the action plan and the milestone to be reached; to know which resources are dedicated to what."
  • "The user interface looks quite old and needs to be improved."
  • "There are more user-friendly products on the market that I would suggest using in preference to this one."

What is our primary use case?

We mainly use this solution for project management planification. I'm an external consultant and manager in enterprise transformation.

How has it helped my organization?

Project Server allows us to have a clear visualization of the action plan and the milestone to be reached; to know which resources are dedicated to what.

What is most valuable?

One of the good features is the easy integration with Excel. It's easy to use. I don't use all the functionalities, but it suits my needs.

What needs improvement?

The user interface needs to be improved. It looks quite old and nowhere near as good as the Jira UI. I also think they should allow the delayed monitoring of the task. For now, there's only the planification of the whole program, and it's not possible to do daily monitoring of the task layer which is a natural extension of the planification of the project. The whole solution could be more flexible.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for less than a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I believe the solution is stable. All the project managers use it so there would be around 100 users.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is rather complex and not user-friendly.

What other advice do I have?

There are more user-friendly products on the market that I would suggest using in preference to this one.

I rate this solution six out of 10.
