Dell PowerProtect Data Domain Primary Use Case
Dell PowerProtect Data Domain's main use case is backup, integrating with Veeam, NetWorker, and other backup software. Almost all customers utilize Dell PowerProtect Data Domain as a deduplication and backup solution.
Almost all of our customers indeed use Dell PowerProtect Data Domain. When I mention all users, I refer specifically to enterprise users, including Telco and government entities, who use Dell PowerProtect Data Domain. We also have some small OceanProtect Huawei deduplication devices, but they are not the same storage as Dell PowerProtect Data Domain.
View full review »I have close to 20 years of experience, combining my seven years with FalconStor and my 11 years with Cox. Dell PowerProtect Data Domain is a backup solution we have used from day one. When I worked for Cox, I was hired from DealerTrack in 2014, and Cox Enterprises, which owns many different brands, acquired DealerTrack. Cox had NetBackup running and Dell PowerProtect Data Domain. They decided to retire NetBackup and use Dell PowerProtect Data Domain, making it the enterprise backup solution for all AutoTrader, Kelly Blue Book, and other properties.
We back up over 20,000 servers in the backup window successfully and on a continuous basis. This was based primarily on a virtual environment, specifically VMware.
We migrated from Avamar to PPDM, and I feel Dell can improve the migration process. I do not know how many customers they have, but we faced challenges migrating from Avamar to PPDM.
Network-wise, implementing the solution and expanding on our DealerTrack presented several challenges. When we migrated DealerTrack from New Jersey data centers to Atlanta, we were set up in a network bubble. Once we received the green light to expand to other business units, adding more network capabilities proved challenging.

I use Dell PowerProtect Data Domain as a second backup repository. I implemented Dell PowerProtect Data Domain in the initial setup and some configuration, which is maybe the standard way to implement another backup for the virtual infrastructure.
View full review »Dell PowerProtect Data Domain is currently used to protect the environment backup. The major use case in this banking environment is that most of our data is expected to be 100% protected. The use case at the moment is the protection of the data being backed up to the CRS, and we have a special interest in the CyberSense part of it because we understand that if an environment has any issue, the first thing is protecting the destination file and data itself, and CyberSense is able to meet that requirement.

Our daily backups are run through PPDM, our Power Data Protect Manager, using Dell PowerProtect Data Domain. Previously, it used to be Avamar, and it's backed up and retained for 30 days, and we also have long-term retention. In some cases, it's one year to multiple years. All of the data is basically stored in Dell PowerProtect Data Domain.
The amount of data which we have is substantial with Dell PowerProtect Data Domain. Relatively, we do have a daily change rate. However, if we go with any other traditional method of backups, it's occupying quite a significant amount of space on the backup storage. Dell PowerProtect Data Domain actually helps us to minimize that, and a large amount of data can be compressed into a single Dell PowerProtect Data Domain rather than having multiple backup storage systems.
View full review »The typical use case for Dell PowerProtect DD (Data Domain) is for backup purposes; it is disk-based backup, which provides fast backup capabilities.
Additionally, data can be replicated from site one to site two, specifically backup data from backup device to backup device, not storage to storage.
Furthermore, deduplication and compression are enabled on the backup data, resulting in reduced bandwidth consumption. These are the three main functionalities.

The tool's use cases primarily revolve around structured data. We can manage backups with features like compression, deduplication, and in-line deduplication. For instance, even with just a 10 KB backup space for structured data, we can achieve data reduction ratios up to 1:10. Only 1 TB of storage is needed to accommodate the equivalent of 10 TB of backups.

View full review »I have proposed Dell PowerProtect DD in a couple of sectors, including defense, government, finance, and banks. Dell PowerProtect DD faces strong competition with appliances from Veritas, NetVault, and Commvault.
Dell PowerProtect DD provides better appliances than the aforementioned competitors, has better features and the license is provided without any investments. Veritas offers solution by charging on a per-terabyte licensing model. Dell PowerProtect DD is used to retain or manage backups or sites for later use.

We use the solution as a backup and to restore applications.
It's business continuance versus disaster recovery. Business continuance is you lose some data at your data site or maybe get data corruption, due to malware, or somebody deletes something by mistake, and you've got to restore it. You go to your backup to do that, and that's business continuance. Disaster recovery is if your whole site's gone down and you need to run at another site. For business continuance, you need a product like Data Domain Power Protect.

View full review »The main use case for PowerProtect DD (Data Domain) is that it serves as a backup at our company. We use it to protect production data as a secondary backup. Additionally, the solution can be used for long-term storage of data that is not required for six months, one year, or longer. This data can be moved from the solution to a cloud or peer-to-peer network. So, as a long-term archiving solution, we can use it. We can use this solution even for the data moved to cloud archiving solutions. For instance, in AWS, there is something known as an S3 bucket, and if we want to move data from Data Domain to an AWS S3 bucket, Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud, or Cloud Block Storage, we can move the data.
