it has the CFS agent, which isn't available in any other competing solution
Pros and Cons
  • "SonicWall has all the usual functions, like LAN configurations, security features, word filters, etc., but it also has the CFS agent, which isn't available in any other firewall. Reporting port support is also there."
  • "The thing main thing is that there's no user admin and in other firewalls, we can enable the scalable features, but SonicWall doesn't have that feature."

What is our primary use case?

SonicWall is for general security purposes.

What is most valuable?

SonicWall has all the usual functions, like LAN configurations, security features, word filters, etc., but it also has the CFS agent, which isn't available in any other firewall. Reporting port support is also there.

I also like the ability to manage all the firewalls from a single location. We can support all those things from this application. It's a cloud-based solution.

What needs improvement?

The thing main thing is that there's no user admin and in other firewalls, we can enable the scalable features, but SonicWall doesn't have that feature.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used SonicWall for about seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

SonicWall NSa is reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's cloud-based, so the scalability is good, and it's suitable for any size of customer.

How are customer service and support?

SonicWall support is good. I rate it 10 out of 10.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

SonicWall NSa is easy to understand. The initial setup for any firewall is straightforward. Having a single console is also good. The deployment time can vary depending on the client's requirements, like VPNs, routing, policies, load balancing, etc. At most, it will take one hour. I rate it 10 out of 10 for ease of setup. After deployment, SonicWall doesn't require specific maintenance.

What about the implementation team?

We are resellers, so the clients who purchase the firewall deploy it themselves. We provide support, too.

What other advice do I have?

I rate SonicWall NSa nine out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Fast tech support and has the ability to collect mini routers
Pros and Cons
  • "SonicWall NS has a lot of valuable features. One of the best SonicWall NSa features is the ability to collect mini routers and get only one user connection."
  • "Overall, Im satisfied with SonicWall NSa, but it would be better if they could add a small terminal to each device. This would help me deal with certain issues by running a small bot onto any PC."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for SonicWall NSa is a firewall and for analytics. I use SonicWall NSa to follow the users. Some users manage to bypass the firewall sometimes and install certain software. I track all of this "bad" behavior and block it.

What is most valuable?

SonicWall NS has a lot of valuable features. One of the best SonicWall NSa features is the ability to collect mini routers and get only one user connection.

What needs improvement?

Overall, I'm satisfied with SonicWall NSa, but it would be better if they could add a small terminal to each device. This would help me deal with certain issues by running a small bot onto any PC. This terminal could control technical configuration from a centralized configuration with the SonicWall appliance.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution since last February. However, I have worked with SonicWall since 2007.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have about 150 users. Each employee configures up to three connections: one on a PC and one or two on mobiles.

How are customer service and support?

We are happy with SonicWall NSa's tech support. We have an account manager and whenever I run into any issues, I email him directly and he calls me within the hour. This is sufficiently fast for our needs.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously ran MicroTech and FortiGate. We switched because we wanted to try something new. We change the technology we use each year.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy for me because I am a specialist. I previously worked for a Dell and SonicWall partner before, so I'd configured SonicWall NSa many times before. However, now as a customer, I had a SonicWall consultant deploy it.

What about the implementation team?

We used a SonicWall NSa consultant for the deployment.

What was our ROI?

I can't speak to any ROI we've had in terms of numbers but all technology of this type will give you a return on investment because it's secure and makes your business run smoothly.

For example, as I am in the desert and there is no fiber connection here, I was using SIM cards that gave me seven GB a day. Before we deployed SonicWall NSa, I was running seven SIM cards for a total of about 50 GB per day. Right now, I use only one seven-GB SIM card.

Their support is better than most competitors
Pros and Cons
  • "SonicWall's sales support is much better than other vendors'."
  • "Competitors provide SSL encryption licenses for free, whereas SonicWall only provides two licenses by default, but you have to pay for the rest of the licenses."

What is our primary use case?

SonicWall prevents and restricts access to websites for employees as well as anyone who comes into the office.

What needs improvement?

Most firewalls have active/active high-availability mode. If I'm paying for two firewalls, why shouldn't AI utilize both? It would be better if SonicWall came with n active/active feature instead of active/standby.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with SonicWall NSa for more than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

SonicWall NSa is simple to scale. You can easily add more firewalls to the cluster.

How are customer service and support?

SonicWall's sales support is much better than other vendors'.

How was the initial setup?

Deploying SonicWall NSa is straightforward. A new user can easily configure the firewall. You can usually complete the deployment within a day. Setting up the prerequisites takes about two hours and then it takes some time to deploy the policies. That varies depending on what the customer wants.

Maintenance is primarily configuration-related stuff, and our customers have their own engineers, but we give them advice. One engineer can maintain the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

You don't need to pay an annual fee, but any cost matters to the customer. Let's say SonicWall is giving me a firewall at a certain price, while a FortiGate firewall costs the same but offers added features like free SSL and active/active. Then customers might think it's better to buy a FortiGate.

Competitors provide SSL encryption licenses for free, whereas SonicWall only provides two licenses by default, but you have to pay for the rest of the licenses.
However, when most customers go beyond 20 or so users with SSL licenses, they usually go with a dedicated appliance, so a firewall should provide at least 20 to 25 SSL licenses for free.

What other advice do I have?

I rate SonicWall NSa eight out of 10.

Simple to configure and easy to handle and communicate with
Pros and Cons
  • "SonicWall NSa's most valuable features are the ease of configuration and the GUI."
  • "An area for improvement would be SonicWall NSa's integration with antiviruses."

What is most valuable?

SonicWall NSa's most valuable features are the ease of configuration and the GUI. It's a web-based application, so we can easily configure all we want in the browser.

What needs improvement?

An area for improvement would be SonicWall NSa's integration with antiviruses. In the next release, SonicWall should include a wireless solution so we can implement the firewall in our networks and for wireless users and access points.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using SonicWall NSa for about two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

SonicWall NSa is a stable system that's really easy to handle and communicate with.

How are customer service and support?

SonicWall's technical support is very responsive and helpful whenever we need support from them.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, I worked with PMG Firewall, but SonicWall has a higher level of compatibility, and the integration between the software and hardware gives us more speed in traffic and processing the data over the firewall.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was easy - we could implement rules for mapping, network traffic, and network address translation easily on our firewall. I would rate the ease of the setup as four out of five.

What other advice do I have?

SonicWall NSa is a great choice for any growing company - it's really helpful, and it's suitable for networks with limited or unlimited users. I would rate SonicWall NSa as eight out of ten.

Easy to scale advanced threat protection solution with knowledgeable technical support, but has occasional bugs
Pros and Cons
  • "Easy to scale solution that provides advanced threat protection. Their technical support is very good, very knowledgeable, and easy to reach."
  • "SonicWall NSa has occasional bugs, particularly during upgrades, and that's an area for improvement."

What is our primary use case?

Our use cases for SonicWall NSa are the Global VPN and the SSL VPN, because nowadays, everyone prefers to work from home, and prefers to connect from mobile applications to our organization.

What is most valuable?

What's valuable in SonicWall NSa is the ATP (advanced threat protection). It can protect users from malicious links, e.g. those sent to the end user email and is clicked by the end user, who'll be led to a bad website. SonicWall NSa has a Sandboxing service that is very helpful for us, especially when end users accidentally click on malicious links.

Another valuable feature of this solution is that it is very useful for site-to-site VPN connectivity issues.

SonicWall NSa also has very good hardware, e.g. from 2013 to 2021, only one product had a hardware failure, and within 24 hours, they were able to replace that product.

I also love that SonicWall has very good technical support, who are very knowledgeable, provides good suggestions, and they're easy to reach.

What needs improvement?

An area for improvement in SonicWall NSa is that sometimes, we experience bugs when upgrading, so we have to contact their technical support to fix issues.

It would be much easier if this improvement was in place: if the one-time password which is built-in, was provided as an OTP for the administrator logging into the console, so that we'll have a quicker awareness of it, rather than needing to check emails for it. Having a Telegram or WhatsApp bot integrated with the device, for example, will be very helpful for us, so we can instantly take action, without us needing to log into and check our emails, meaning we'll be able to put things right faster.

This may not be possible in SonicWall NSa, but I'm also looking for any kind of controller or device for the Windows server or client, e.g. Windows 11 and Windows 10 from SonicWall NSa itself, so that a security domain or the gateway of the organization would be able to identify the latest update for a product, whether that product is installed or not. This feature would be very helpful, and it's what I'd like to see in the next release.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using SonicWall NSa since 2013.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

SonicWall NSa performs well, but sometimes, there are bugs, so I have to call their support when this happens, and I elaborate on the problem we're facing. Support then takes the diagnostic data, fixes it, then sends back to me the firmware or the setting so I can restore my SonicWall NSa.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

SonicWall NSa is easy to scale.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support team for this solution is very knowledgeable. They are able to fix issues. They understand what we are facing and they suggest very good options. They provide us very good support, and on a scale of one to five, I'm giving them a four to a five for technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used different solutions, e.g. Sophos and Fortinet, but what I noticed is that I either couldn't find how to contact their technical support, or if I was able to call their technical support, I either get a busy tone, or it takes a long time to speak to someone. As for SonicWall support, I only had to wait 10 minutes to speak to someone, and if they accidentally drop my call, they'll immediately call me, no matter which part of the world I'm in, so I switched to SonicWall NSa.

What about the implementation team?

I deployed SonicWall NSa myself. Deployment was very easy.

Last January 14th, one of my firewalls went down, so we had to replace it, but it was unfortunate that we didn't enable the local backup. At the time, what we had was the factory set up option for the device, so it took me six hours to fix, e.g. applying for the policy site to the site VPN, creating the users, etc. All those processes took a minimum of five to six hours.

I didn't use a vendor or a third party for the deployment of this solution. I only had to call their support if there was something I couldn't understand, e.g. why the traffic wasn't working, etc. For some of the processes, I took notes from their support, while for the rest of the processes, we can do it by ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

SonicWall NSa has two types of license, so the cost would depend on the license.

The advanced license is a bit expensive when compared to the comprehensive license, but when you compare the advanced license to the licensing cost of other brands or competitors, it is expensive.

One good point about the more expensive license for this product it that they provide a hardware guarantee, which means direct replacement, no matter how long you've been using it, whether you've used it for two, three, five, or seven years. You can easily have your device directly replaced if it's having issues with the firewall, software, or hardware, etc. You can get this done as an end user, or as a customer. You just have to fill in and send back the application form for device replacement, provide the serial number and the model number, and that's it. They will replace your device. It's also easy for them to transfer your license to another device. SonicWall NSa is worth the money.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I evaluated Sophos and Fortinet solutions.

What other advice do I have?

The firewall products I'm using are SonicWall NSa 3600 and 2400.

We are using the latest version of this solution.

We are using a local backup, and we also enabled for my SonicWall NSa a cloud backup for all devices. We are using six firewalls, so we enabled the flow backup, with the goal of being able to restore immediately, in case of emergency.

This product doesn't require much maintenance. Our company operates 24/7, and we deal with ready-mix concrete. It depends on the production, but SonicWall NSa continuously runs 24/7. Maintenance is done monthly, particularly for upgrading the firmware, or for restarting SonicWall server patches. Maintenance of this product only takes one hour on a monthly basis.

We have 200 end users of SonicWall NSa.

I always recommend this product to my friends and colleagues. My supplier also recommends it. I suggest to them to go for SonicWall NSa, depending on the user, e.g. if you have 100 end users. We pay for the license, for example, 2,200 dirhams, so I can get the license, and also get the SonicWall SOHO device, which is the smaller one.

My rating for SonicWall NSa is seven out of ten.

All-in-one firewall solution that enables us to do hosting and security
Pros and Cons
  • "We can do the hosting and security all under one box. The UTM is a good feature."
  • "The dynamics needs to be improved. The solution is not very compatible compared to the market products."

What is our primary use case?

Our use case is for firewall security. The solution is deployed on-premises.

What is most valuable?

It's an all-in-one solution. We can do the hosting and security all under one box. The UTM is a good feature.

What needs improvement?

The dynamics needs to be improved. The solution is not very compatible compared to the market products.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. We need only one or two people for maintenance.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. We have around 100 users, and we have plans to increase usage.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is good.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was easy. We mostly did the installation ourselves. One person is enough to complete the installation. Depending on the network, it only takes a couple of minutes to do because it's so simple.

What other advice do I have?

I would give this solution 10 out of 10. I would recommend it to others; it's a good solution.

Has the features, but overall stability and usability are not there
Pros and Cons
  • "The product is working okay. The product is working feature-wise."
  • "The stability is not there. The features are there, but they are not stable. They need to improve on this product because I feel that they have launched this product without much R&D."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for SonicWall NSa is as a public firewall, as an interface between our private network and the public network.

What is most valuable?

The product is working okay. The product is working feature-wise.

What needs improvement?

I would rate SonicWall NSa as an average product, not a very highly recommended one. It is an average product.

The stability is not there. The features are there, but they are not stable. They need to improve on this product because I feel that they have launched this product without much R&D.

For how long have I used the solution?

We are using SonicWall NSa for quite a long time, around 10 to 12 years, but that includes the the older model, which was the 5500. Now we have been using the 5600 model for the last two, three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Performance wise, they are good - not very good, but they're okay, just good.

They are not stable. It is a very unstable product.

For maintenance, we require one engineer from the support partner, one from the tech side, and one from our side, so three engineers and one manager.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

At any point in time we have more than 600 users.

We do not have plans to increase the number of users.

How are customer service and support?

Tech support is okay, but the product needs much improvement.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were not using a different solution before. We have always been using SonicWall, just the older model, which was 5500. We upgraded to 5600.

How was the initial setup?

The installation part of the initial setup was a painful experience. I felt at the time that it was not a finished product. They have to do more R&D on this product to improve it.

It took a very long time to set it up, to be honest. It took very long because they had some bugs and fixes. After so many fixes, it took them very long to install this product.

What about the implementation team?

Obviously, no OEM deals directly with them. We have their channel partners who did the installation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

To be very honest, we are not satisfied with the 5600 product.

On a personal level, I would not recommend SonicWall NSa.

On a scale of one to ten, you can rate SonicWall NSa a six.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

The license and the hardware both need to be renewed. The annual maintenance contract is there. So they have to renew the licenses.

Great performance and security with reasonable pricing
Pros and Cons
  • "The prices are similar to other vendors and the support is good."
  • "I'd like to see integration with Microsoft 365 for authentication."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is a security system we install in our customer's office. It's a firewall. We have a control panel to manage and view some data and this control panel is in the cloud. However, the firewalls themselves are in the customer's office.

What is most valuable?

The security is great.

It has great performance.

The prices are similar to other vendors and the support is good.

The deployment process is simple.

What needs improvement?

I can't speak to any missing features. They've recently released a new version and it's quite good. Right now, it's the best solution.

I'd like to see integration with Microsoft 365 for authentication.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the solution for a while. We've definitely used it over the past year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability and performance are great. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable. It's true that SonicWall had a lot of problems in the past, however, now it's very stable. It works perfectly.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's very scalable. In some cases, it's necessary to change the firewall, however, it's easy to change as SonicWall has the ability to migrate the configuration from all firewalls to the new one.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is great. They are helpful and responsive. We are quite happy with their capabilities.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm also familiar with Fortinet. I find SonicWall more secure. It also offers better performance.

Previously, we installed a firewall directly with Linux and we configured it all at once. It was very manual.

How was the initial setup?

Now, the implementation is easy. In the past it was difficult. Companies needed a specialist to deploy new firewalls. Now, they have a system that a normal technician can install.

It takes a few hours to install and deploy the product.

We have two people that handle deployment and maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is on par with others on the market. It's not overly expensive.

The cheaper option is between €100 and €200. However, NSa has different models and the more expensive one is for around €10,000, more or less.

When we purchase our NSa, we buy the firewall and the security services. The security services are for a period of time from one year to three years. When we arrive at the end of the contract we need to renew the security services, however, the firewall will still work. We only need to renew the security services.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

When we decide to change from Linux firewalls to an appliance we looked at different companies, like Cisco and Fortinet, and we compared these different companies and products. We decided on SonicWall due to the relationship between performance and security.

What other advice do I have?

We are partners.

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
