Great load-balancing services and multiple backend servers, but it would be great if it had script-sharing features in a community hub
Pros and Cons
  • "The strength of this solution is the application delivery controller."
  • "The community portal does not have a place to find scripts."

What is our primary use case?

The vendor usually overloads the devices with a lot of functionality. The strength of this solution is the application delivery controller. The best functions are load-balancing services and multiple backend servers.

What is most valuable?

The SSL uploading feature is helpful, and every vendor has it. It terminates the full connections and takes care of all the power required for the backend servers to process the SSL load. Radware Alteon also makes our environment and web applications more scalable because the devices are half-sequence and specifically designed to handle web traffic and SSL web traffic.

These devices work as hypervisors on the cluster that we have on-premises. We can run virtual applications and delivery controllers inside them. We can also isolate resources and environments. In addition, Radware Alteon has a helpful scripting engine for automation called AppShape+.

What needs improvement?

I have worked with Big IP F5. It is a veteran solution that is more stable and has more resources. Big IP F5 has a virtual hub in the community with a lot of resources and already-made scripts that can be used for free. Radware Alteon has a community portal, but the community portal does not have a place to find scripts. It would be great if they could be transparent and deploy a community where their users can share the scripts.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for almost 11 years. We have a cluster of two Radware 52808 devices. We are currently using version 32.2.12. Some devices are deployed on-premises, but we have a client running SIWA, a cloud web environment in Radware Alteon, so we deploy both. So it is on public and hardware cloud.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is pretty stable, and we are happy with the solution. We had some problems in the past, but they have been resolved. In the past, we suffered some key performance bags. For example, there was a memory leak that persisted during firmware releases. We had to reboot and failover the devices. Every Wednesday at 6:00 pm, we had failovers of the digital application delivery control from one device to another for about a year. The device had a problem where if you ran it for too long without rebooting, it generated a corrupt memory and crashed. The device stopped accepting new connections, and we couldn't see any issues in the logs. The technical support told us it could be a tricky memory leak back. When we started rebooting the devices periodically each week, we managed to resolve the situation. It took about a year, and multiple upgrades and versions before the vendor fixed the issue.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Our organization usually buys load balances and hand-held devices oversized. We have not had any problem with scalability, and none of the devices fall short of our expectations. In addition, the devices are usually more powerful than the license they sell you. If there are problems with scalability, we can upgrade our license to a superior one.

We work with public institutions and have tens of thousands of potential users because we use Radware Alteon in public administration and digital offices. In Spain, the public administration sector is our biggest client.

How are customer service and support?

They have good support, and we have used them for years.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have used Big IP F5 for many years.

How was the initial setup?

I rate the initial setup an eight out of ten. It was not straightforward because we needed to set it up. Radware Alteon has a specific syntax requiring navigation of all menus and venues.

Deployment depends on the area and configuration that needs to be applied. With setup experience, deployment of Radware Alteon could be reasonably fast. The initial deployment was done in-house. But now, connecting to a third-party coworker in the data center is easy. We can rack the device in the data center and plug the cables into a laptop that can plug into the Radware Alteon. The user can connect to a smartphone data plan and easily configure the device remotely. We need just two people for maintenance.

What was our ROI?

I believe there is a return on investment. Therefore, the solution is worth buying, and if you don't buy a load balancer, it is difficult because you will need more backend servers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I do not have specific details about the costs. There is a licensing fee, and they have an SSL transaction license and others. They have two or three licenses that you pay based on the volume.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution a seven out of ten. Of recent, we tend to lean towards using cloud. This is because the on-premises devices are less common and are losing presence in my company's services. Regarding advice to others, I would recommend they upgrade the device before entering the production stage to reduce the bags.

It helps our organization to block threats, but the user interface could be better
Pros and Cons
  • "The device blocks threats and allows legitimate users to work correctly."
  • "The user interface can be improved."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for the solution is protection. We have just one web application protected behind this AppWall, and it is automatic with the default configuration. This device periodically downloads new threat signatures from Radware, and most of the time, we let the device AppWall handle the traffic and block the threats that it thinks are ahead.

What is most valuable?

The error detection system is very valuable. When an error is encountered, the WAF blocks an illegitimate user and sends a message. The message contains a transaction ID that can be matched in the locks of the AppWall. So, it's not hard to investigate these events when people write an incident because some illegitimate user is often trying to use this web that is protected behind the WAF and getting errors.

What needs improvement?

The user interface can be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for less than a year, and the version we use is integrated into the Alteon on-premises device.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. However, because we are tending towards the cloud version of these products, if we increase the usage, it would be cloud WAF versions of AppWall.

How was the initial setup?

I was not involved in the initial setup.

What was our ROI?

It's difficult to tell our precise return on investments because we let the AppWall operate by itself and don't look at the AppWall events. So we probably need to look closely at the events and everything. Still, whenever we look up the events, we see that the device blocks a fair amount of attempts to breach security, and we barely see incidents with legitimate users. So I assume it's a good return on investment because the device blocks threats and allows legitimate users to work correctly.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I cannot comment on licensing costs as I am not very knowledgeable about them.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the solution a six out of ten. The solution is good but can be improved by including a better user interface.

Stable with high availability and good dashboards
Pros and Cons
  • "The product offers high availability."
  • "You need to have pretty good internal knowledge of the solution."

What is our primary use case?

At this moment we have the home web page at the enterprise with an application firewall. We have 21 applications that we need to upload to the cloud. At this moment we have only one, and we working in the next three months to upload at least five more applications.

How has it helped my organization?

At this moment we can tell from the dashboard how our application is receiving traffic. You can look at how many transactions have occurred, for example. We can prevent issues from occurring which helps keep us safe.

What is most valuable?

At this moment we have only used the web application firewall. We have the bot manager too. The bot manager is useful due to the fact that your service is working in preventing the botnet and doing a lot of transactions.

We get some firewall reviews on the dashboard and it is useful for looking for alerts or attacks. It can tell you what the users do in the application and how they're using the application.

The initial setup is pretty easy.

The product offers high availability.

The stability of the solution is very good.

You can scale the solution if you need to.

What needs improvement?

With a good configuration and a good understanding of the application, you can have very good integration with the web application firewall and Radware application. However, it isn't easy. We need to do a trial and try a bunch of settings. The integration process could be a little bit easier and smoother. They need to improve the processes surrounding it. We need to be able to integrate more effectively with the perimeter firewall due to the fact that, if you have many transactions that try to attack the web application, you might have a drop in transactions in the firewall.

We've tried to do some configurations with WebSocket and have had a lot of issues.

You need to have pretty good internal knowledge of the solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for about six months at this point.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is quite stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution can scale well. You can integrate with other solutions or configure it to assist in the process. If have more than one application, you can get a contract to upload more.

In my area, there are five people who work directly with the product.

I do not have any information about expanding this solution in the future. I can't say that's on the horizon for us.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is very good. They respond rather quickly. We are happy with the amount of service they provide. They are knowledgeable and responsive.

There is also information online and within the control panel that can assist users in understanding the product.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use a different solution. We've only ever used Radware.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex. It is easy. You have access on your personal dashboard and you can upload the application. After that, you need to change the DNS settings in order to make a point with the DNS portion of the hardware. It's very easy.

The initial setup took about a week due to the fact that the provider needed to make an area where we could upload the configuration. After that, you have one day to make the configuration in the web application firewall. This is the part that takes a bit of time, however, it is crucial for the upload.

You only really need two to ten people to manage the deployment of the process, although there may be other teams involved. You only need one person to handle maintenance.

What about the implementation team?

We had a local partner that assisted us. We had very good meetings and regular contact with them. They provided very easy communication.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have four licenses for 21 applications. The pricing isn't too bad.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did evaluate Cloudflare and Akamai before ultimately settling on Radware.

The three options are varied. However, Radware had some extras. For example, the Bot Manager in Radware was included, however, in Akamai, it is on a different part. Cloudflare was more expensive than Radware. There were a few other differences as well.

What other advice do I have?

I'm working with Radware, and we have Forcepoint for a proxy on DLP service.

I'm not sure which version of the solution we're using. It's the latest version, however, I don't recall the version number offhand.

I would advise other users that the solution is not the best if you need to improve the security in other areas too, however, it helps you to maintain the security of your homepage or your service.

Overall, I would rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Enables consistent security, single sign-on, but automation features need work

What is our primary use case?

A Radware Alteon load balancer is a hardware device that acts as a reverse proxy and distributes network or application traffic across a number of servers. Load balancers are used to increase capacity (high-availability) and reliability of application. Load balancers ensure reliability and availability by monitoring the health of applications, and only sending requests to servers and applications that can respond in a timely manner. They improve the overall performance of applications by maintaining application and network sessions, as well as by performing application-specific tasks.

Load balancers are generally grouped into two categories: layer 4 and layer 7. Layer 4 load balancers act on data found in the network and transport layer protocols like TCP/IP, FTP, and UDP. Layer7 load balancers distribute requests based on data found in application layer protocols like HTTPS, HTTP.

Requests are received by both types of load balancers and they are distributed to a particular server based on a configuration algorithm.

How has it helped my organization?

  • Eliminates complexity
  • Reduces deployment time
  • Increases efficiency
  • Improves performance
  • Enhances productivity
  • Simplifies access
  • Enables consistent security, deployment automation, single sign–on, any-IP support, mobility

What is most valuable?

Radware's application delivery controller (ADC) provides advanced and comprehensive application delivery capabilities, ensuring 24/7 availability.

What needs improvement?

  • Needs to improve in automation, surge protection, DNS automation.
  • There are no options to name basic configurations.
  • SMS alerts, reporting alerts require some automation.
  • Improvement is needed for live traffic monitoring in dashboard, live traffic tracking.
  • It needs automated traffic capture and performance tasks, as per script.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution at seven out of 10. Radware Alteon is a system that monitors the availability and performance of global resources and uses that information to manage network traffic patterns. It uses load-balancing algorithms, topology-based routing, and AppShape++ scripts  to control and distribute traffic according to specific policies.

  • "I would like this solution to have an integration tool that will convert configuration from other software, into readable values for this product during implementation."

What is our primary use case?

I use this product as a web application firewall.

What is most valuable?

This solution allows me to secure applications, by blocking suspicious traffic based on the signature that has been enabled for that particular application.

What needs improvement?

I would like this solution to have an integration tool that will convert configuration from other software, into readable values for this product during implementation.

I would also like there to be more filtering features added to this product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for around two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have found this to be a stable solution during my time using it.  However, it is reliant on hardware working properly when deployed on-premises.

Easily integrated with other platforms, straightforward deployment and reasonably priced
Pros and Cons
  • "A user-friendly and reasonably priced solution."
  • "Scalability should be based on customer requirements."

What is our primary use case?

We implement this product for application security, to protect servers from attacks. We are the local distributor of this solution in the Philippines and I'm the technical manager.

What is most valuable?

The solution is very user-friendly and based on my experience handling the Radware app, especially the AppWall, it's a convenient product to use and, to my mind, one of the best AppWall solutions on the market. AppWall can be integrated with different platforms and has an EMS, a mitigation solution that is integrated with their AppWall for communication.

What needs improvement?

I'd like to see something more provided in terms of scalability because there's a limit on the throughput and it would help if scalability could be based on customer requirements.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been selling this solution for about five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution generally has good scalability.

How are customer service and support?

As distributors, we also provide support to our clients. If there is a major problem, we can get assistance from Radware.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. You can have it inline facing your different application servers or it can be configured by proxy. If everything is in place, deployment can be completed within a week or two.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing cost depends on customer requirements. The on-prem solution requires a license plus warranty. The cloud version is subscription-based license. I think AppWall is cheaper relative to its competitors.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution 10 out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
