We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Their reliability and their policy of pre-shipping replacements when a unit has failed.""Advanced routing (RIP, OSPF, BGP, PBR). It gives you a seamless and simple integration into a large network.""The virtual firewall feature is the most valuable. We have around 1,500 firewalls. We did not buy individual hardware, and the virtual firewalls made sense because we don't have to keep on buying the hardware. FortiGate is easier to use as compared to Checkpoint devices. It is user friendly and has a good UI. You don't need much expertise to work on this firewall. You don't need to worry much about DCLA, commands, and things like that.""The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are the ease of use and there are several operating systems that can include the hardware capacities. In the newer releases, the resources were more useful because they were included in the operating system.""The scalability is good in Fortinet FortiGate.""Their proxy-based inspection is responsive and secure.""Customers are more inclined towards FortiGate because of application control, web filtering, and anti-spam features. The support from the FortiGate team is good, and price-wise, it is affordable.""Our project needs to link two sides through the internet. One of these was in Cairo and the other in another city. We used FortiGate as the integrating solution between the two locations, i.e. the Fortinet 30E & 100E."

"The most valuable features of OPNsense are the GUI and frequent updates.""The most valuable features are reporting, the Sensei plugin, and firewall capabilities.""What I like best about OPNsense is that, as a firewall, it's pretty good. I'm quite impressed with it. I had an excellent experience with OPNsense, which helped me achieve the targets I wanted.""OPNsense is easy to scale when running on the hardware.""It has an open license. It works very well, and there is an update every month.""OPNsense is easy to use and open source.""We have found pretty much all the features of the solution to be valuable.""The initial implementation process is simple."

More OPNsense Pros →

"The main features I have found best are the load balancer and ease of use.""I'm more inclined towards the conventional firewall. So for me, I'm more geared towards the standard firewall type functionalities as well as the web application firewall because that seems to work fine.""I believe it's the advanced security software that offers SMPP protection for the agent.""Web and content filtering are valuable in preventing people from abusing the network and pushing up the bandwidth price.""The solution has good load balancers.""The reporting features are very good.""The product is easy to maintain.""There are plenty of features that are valuable in the Sophos Cyberoam UTM. We use all the features, such as email Security, firewall rules, web server security, web devices, web protection."

Cons
"We were not able to build a full-mesh VPN; however, I am not sure if this was the fault of Fortinet FortiGate.""There are some complex administration tasks in their administration portal. That needs to be improved.""Price, of course, can always be more competitive or better.""Its reporting and pricing need improvement.""Technical support is good but the response time could be faster.""The updates Fortinet provides are sometimes unstable.""Fortinet FortiGate can improve by integrating the web application firewall and the DDoS protection part of the solution. Having a WAF feature, web application firewall, and proxy together would be a good benefit.""We sometimes have issues with FortiGate's routing table in the latest firmware update. We had to downgrade the device because our customers complained about bugs."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"The scalability needs improvement.""There are some add-ons that need enhancements to make management easier for users, especially the reporting features. Some reports don't show the level of detail I'm looking for, and I've had trouble installing certain add-ons, especially for Internet bandwidth shaping within my company.""The solution could be more secure.""Its interface should be a little bit better.""When using the solution at the beginning was difficult. There was a steep learning curve.""The interface of the solution is an area with shortcomings.""They should improve IPEs for security in the future.""OPNsense could improve by making the configuration more web-based rather than shell or command-line-based."

More OPNsense Cons →

"Maybe network traffic analysis for malware and malicious behavior.""The product strategy of the manufacturer is strange. I don't understand what they are doing in that regard.""The price is obviously a more sensitive area to focus on.""The VPN is an area that can be improved.""The reporting part could be more user-friendly for troubleshooting and identifying network issues. It should be more easy for a normal user to identify the problem in their network.""The product fails to provide proper reports, making it an area where improvements are required.""The implementation policy needs improvment.""Sophos Cyberoam UTM has room for improvement in specific rules-based objects and redesign. The solution also needs to improve in adding rules and policies, including renewing and finding policies."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."

I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main hang-ups will be with the VIP/load balancing and SSL. For some reason that completely escapes me, both of these vendors make getting valid certificates onto their boxes unnecessarily difficult -- the Fortinet appliances more so than the Sophos UTM appliances. At one point a Fortinet engineer had to write an entire manual on how to get an SSL certificate uploaded successfully on the 4.x firmware Sophos: The one feature that is missing (and this makes some amount of sense) from the Sophos appliance is BITS caching for updates. Other than that, Sophos offers a full replacement for TMG on UTM9. The XG platform also offers a replacement for the TMG; however, some of the rumblings about upcoming releases suggests that Sophos is going to give XG the Apple iOS treatment and "streamline" the interface...potentially cutting out/hiding some functionality. On the effectiveness of the NGFW, Sophos is mostly good but has a few issues blocking all pieces of an application. For instance, we had to build custom blocking rules for OpenVPN (the vpn was being used to bypass the content filter) because the default Application Control wasn't effectively blocking the application.
