Good email encryption and blacklisting capabilities with the ability of detecting suspicious links
Pros and Cons
  • "Email encryption enhances end to end security of any data before it passes through the networking system."
  • "They should come up with a mobile application so that it can be more flexible."

What is our primary use case?

Avanan Cloud Email Security is used in the entire organization to protect emails from malware attacks. It detects any threat to emails before landing in their inbox and quickly alerts the IT team.

We have installed it across the on-premise devices and cloud servers to enhance thorough security infrastructure. It easily tracks emails that are shared within the premises to ensure they are safe and the network involved is secure. It is easy to navigate over the user interface and learn how to use the set features within a short period of time.

How has it helped my organization?

We have highly benefited from this platform since we deployed it.

It has provided reliable security to our email infrastructure and developed a secure working environment. We used to encounter a lot of challenges of losing data and unauthorized external attacks by cyber hackers. It ensures there is an effective collaboration among the team members in the entire company. Prevention of phishing emails has enabled my colleagues to focus on more important production programs without fear of malware attacks.

What is most valuable?

The email attachment protection feature detects any compromised link in an email. It blocks the compromised attachment for a thorough security checkup before delivery.

It blacklists any email that is found to have not met the standard security merit before it is shared among colleagues.

Email encryption enhances end to end security of any data before it passes through the networking system.

Avanan Cloud Email Security has eliminated spam and provided the best information-sharing infrastructure in the organization.

What needs improvement?

They should come up with a mobile application so that it can be more flexible. The set security system does not detect some extensions attached to emails that can sometimes be dangerous to the users.

The overall performance has been great, and the customer support staff has always provided much-needed support from the IT team. The solution has been of more help compared to a few operations challenges that occurred all of a sudden.

The cost is higher for SMEs, however, the pricing and billing criteria can be lessened to accommodate more willing customers.

Easy to implement, great at catching threats, and has excellent customer service
Pros and Cons
  • "The customizable rules allow you to change aspects."
  • "Sometimes it seemed like the allow list wasn't working. I've created many allow list rules however, they still seem to be blocked; the same is true with the blocked list rules."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for email security. We were getting phishing and impersonation attacks. We noticed that we (IT) were getting emails asking if random emails were legit, which were obviously not. This scared us and we began to worry about ransomware since we deal with sensitive customer/client info. We needed a solution fast. Being a small company, we needed the biggest bang for our buck so we looked at pricing, including if implementation was extra, which is more common than you think. Once implemented, it handles itself and all we have to do is review threats.

How has it helped my organization?

The product is so easy to implement; it wasn't a burden. Now, we aren't worried about any email threats as Avanan catches everything.

It has improved our organization by allowing our small IT team to keep their eyes on our whole company. We now don't have to worry about our employees clicking links that are not safe. Avanan even replaces the links to ensure they are safe.

It also catches all the impersonation emails we get that are quite sneaky - even those trying to change bank accounts and whatnot, which is definitely scary.

What is most valuable?

The customizable rules allow you to change aspects.

It's so easy to implement using AD.

When looking for a solution, we wanted an easy implementation that didn't cost more and was fast, that is used an active directory, and was cost-effective (since we are a smaller company).

With our small IT team of 2 people, we can just set rules initially and be done with it.

You can create rules with good sensitivity and can create rules along the way, like allowing whitelist and blacklist rules, which is nice.

What needs improvement?

I would say no improvements are necessary. They are constantly making upgrades and improvements.

The only thing that used to bug me, which they fixed, was when I cleared alerts or any activity, it wouldn't clear very quickly so I didn't know if they were cleared or not.

Another issue, which is not that bad, is it can be a little over-sensitive. Sometimes it seemed like the allow list wasn't working. I've created many allow list rules however, they still seem to be blocked; the same is true with the blocked list rules.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for a little over a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have no doubt in terms of the stability of this product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This product can be used for any scale of business.

How are customer service and support?

They have the best customer service.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have the built-in Microsoft "protection". We use Avanan on top of it, as MS doesn't catch anything.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very easy.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the setup in-house; I implemented it.

What was our ROI?

The product has paid for itself within a few months.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This product is the best choice for pricing. For implementation, you don't even need the end-users to do anything.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, we looked at many options, especially McAfee and the other big-name brands.

What other advice do I have?

We never looked back, no regrets on picking Avanan.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

What needs improvement?

There are times when we have false positives.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Avanan for approximately two and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. We are satisfied.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Avanan is a great tool, it can scalable.

Everyone who has an email account in our organization benefits from Avanan. We have a security operations team that deals with it from an administrative and reporting perspective.

How was the initial setup?

The installation of Avanan was straightforward. However, based on your use case, there's canned filtering and then you have to go through the exercise of writing filters that are more appropriate that are aligned with our cyber threats and concerns.

What about the implementation team?

We have a team that maintains, updates, checks logs, and manages email that gets quarantined.

What other advice do I have?

Before someone implements Avanan they should have very detailed documentation on their use cases. This will allow them to be ready to write the necessary filters in conjunction with their implementation team, rather than doing it after the fact with professional services.

I rate Avanan a ten out of ten.
