Supports all kinds of applications but needs better stability
Pros and Cons
  • "Windows Server can be used for any kind of application. It is an operating system that supports enterprise applications. There is no application that doesn't go with Windows."
  • "It could be more stable. Windows has certain problems that Unix platforms don't have. It requires more administrative effort as compared to Unix. I don't know why Microsoft has not changed that. It generates a lot of trash data, so slowly and steadily, you find more and more space being utilized. There is some kind of administrative load, which doesn't happen with Unix."

What is most valuable?

Windows Server can be used for any kind of application. It is an operating system that supports enterprise applications. There is no application that doesn't go with Windows.

What needs improvement?

It could be more stable. Windows has certain problems that Unix platforms don't have. It requires more administrative effort as compared to Unix. I don't know why Microsoft has not changed that. It generates a lot of trash data, so slowly and steadily, you find more and more space being utilized. There is some kind of administrative load, which doesn't happen with Unix.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have a maximum of 50 or 60 users.

How are customer service and support?

We didn't use their support much.

How was the initial setup?

It was very easy to install. The time period for installation depends on the complexity. If we want to simply install with the default option, it doesn't take much time. If you want to enable all of the service options that Windows provides, such as SNMP, it will take longer. If you have to install IAS and all such things, it will take time.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others. We plan to keep using it.

I would rate Windows Server a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Replacing our physical servers provides HA and is less prone to hardware failure
Pros and Cons
  • "Provides workspaces for the entire organization with fewer resources."
  • "One area that needs improvement is the management console."

What is our primary use case?

We started virtualizing servers to reduce the number of physical servers and to optimize the data center. We started with standalone installations of the Hyper-V server and synchronized with our virtual machine. After that, we built a cluster and all of the VMs were hosted in that environment.

How has it helped my organization?

The organization spent a lot of money buying a large number of physical machines, which made up the workspace. With a physical machine, it is easy to incur damage with hardware faults, such as the loss of a disk or another component. With a cluster environment, we obtain an HA solution.

What is most valuable?

We like all of the features connected with sharing resources, typical of a Hyper-V cluster manager. Several of these further stand out, including:

  • The ability to Hot Add resources to the VM.
  • The ability to work on the physical server without disconnecting services.
  • Provides workspaces for the entire organization with fewer resources.

What needs improvement?

One area that needs improvement is the management console. It seems very easy to use but it is not as powerful as those of other vendors, such as VMware. Their solution allows for operation in a more granular and simpler way. For example, there is a wizard to migrate a VM from one node to another, or from one datastore to another.

For how long have I used the solution?

Six years.

Flexible with easy deployment and good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "We find the solution to be easy to use and simple to navigate."
  • "The solution could be more reasonably priced."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is very useful if the company doesn't want open storage, OS. In those cases, we usually recommend customers to use Microsoft services. Most of the time it's actually the client who gives us advice on what kind of OS they want to use and they will just ask for the quotation.

What is most valuable?

The solution is very flexible.

We find the solution to be easy to use and simple to navigate.

The stability is very good.

The security on the server has been great. It's much more secure than, for example, other open-source operating systems.

We find the solution very easy to install.

Technical support is very helpful.

What needs improvement?

The solution could be more reasonably priced.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been dealing with the solution for a couple of years at this point. It's been a while now. We've had some time with it.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the product is good. The product doesn't crash or freeze and there are no bugs or glitches. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is very fast when it comes to replying. They were able to solve any issues we raised with them. We're satisfied with their level of service.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complicated to set up. It's pretty simple and straightforward. A company shouldn't have any issues with the process.

The deployment process may take about 30 minutes or so, as long as you don't run into any errors.

You only need two technical people to manage the deployment process. You don't need a very big team.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing could be a bit more competitive.

The solution offers a permanent license. You don't have to pay a monthly or yearly subscription.

What other advice do I have?

We are Windows Server consultants.

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten. We've been quite satisfied with its capabilities.

I would recommend the product to other users and companies, especially those that don't want to use an open-source option.

Continuous updates, always increasing stability, some features difficult
Pros and Cons
  • "I would say Microsoft operating systems are more stable correctly than they were before, they have made some improvements over the years."
  • "The solution is easy to use mostly but some features can be hard to understand for customers."

What is our primary use case?

We hosted servers on the solution. We installed programs and services on it such as Azure, an ERP product.

What needs improvement?

The solution is easy to use mostly but some features can be hard to understand for customers.

I would say Microsoft operating systems are more stable now than they were before, they have made some improvements over the years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

How was the initial setup?

Windows server installation can be easy but it depends on what your needs are. If you built a huge platform, you can have some difficulties. On the other hand, if you use some simple build with, for example, services like IAS, it can be easily installed and you might be fine with the standard edition of Microsoft Server.

What other advice do I have?

Microsoft has done a great job with Windows. Nothing is perfect, there is always going to be some issues with software at some point but when there are problems they are normally fixed easily.

I would recommend this solution to others.

I rate Windows Server a seven out of ten.
