We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The embedded deduplication engine is really good because we use a Near Line SAS disk as a repository for our backups, and we don't need to pay for another appliance such as a Data Domain or Quantum so that we can have hardware-based deduplication.""It is easy to use and stable. It delivers what has been promised. When it says it can do something, it can actually do it, as opposed to some of its competitors.""There are many valuable features of Commvault HyperScale X giving many possibilities to complete jobs.""Commvault is a very stable product.""I can collect the target data, then we connect it to Commvault. There is not another system that can connect to our target database or target storage. This is very important for us, because there is the threat of malware right now. This can protect not only the product, but also the backup data from outside threats.""It is just about as flexible as you can get; simple. You can put it anywhere you want. You can put it on-prem or in your cloud. I could see where a team that's looking for more of a follow the bouncy ball type of solution might get a little confused. "Oh, no. What do you mean I might have to do it this way or I can't do it that way?" Sometimes, people just want to be told what to do. For an enterprise environment, like we are at NDOT, everything we do is not standard. It is not industry standard; it is not normal. We have all kinds of one-offs. We do need flexibility in the solutions that we get. I will say that Metallic has been extremely flexible in that sense, where we are able to follow the bouncy ball if we wanted to. Obviously, we didn't. We did it our way and Metallic, as a whole solution, provided that to us with no issues.""It's very stable.""Metallic helped me to restore the data within an hour, which is much faster than restoring from Microsoft services."

"The amount of data that it protects with very little storage by doing incremental forever is one of its most valuable features.""The most valuable feature for data recovery in IBM Spectrum Protect is its database protection capabilities.""In general, the solution is quite user-friendly. The GUI is very nice.""I love the TDP for VMware because of the web interface and the possibilities provided by this tool. It's amazing.""The business value comes from the capability to overcome data losses.""We are talking about a stable solution which boasts good performance and security.""One of the main things that I like about IBM is the versioning of the data - meaning that we can have multiple versions of a file or directory of a server.""With Spectrum Protect, you can use any type of disk to back-end the repositories. It gave us flexibility to use whatever storage we wanted at our secondary site."

"One of the most valuable features is real-time replication. The version we're using is reliable and easy to deploy.""Backup and application continuity are most valuable.""Oracle Data Guard has a nice feature called the DataGuard snapshot to open the solution in the read-write mode and make some changes to the database.""Oracle Data Guard is a free solution. When you apply for Enterprise Manager, it comes for free with the solution.""Data Guard also improved because customers with an active Data Guard license want to reduce the I/O in a production environment. Some application complaints to it for Oracle reporting purposes. It has a production environment that needs to be enhanced.""Technical support is very good. If at any time we write a ticket, we get the appropriate answer on time.""We use Data Guard for online replication from data center, to data center for high availability. This is the most important feature.""Oracle Data Guard is scalable. I rate it a ten out of ten."

Cons
"The only problem is that some of what we snap most of is the VMs. We found about 10% of the VMs that we can't snap because they're too interactive. It actually causes the application to crash.""The speed of the Office 365 Backup & Recovery feature is adequate. Microsoft controls the amount of bandwidth that people have when they're using Azure and the O365 environment... If they could work out something with Microsoft to improve the speed, that would help.""Commvault could make the product more cost-effective on the public cloud side. We are using this solution to back up whatever is still on-prem. We are not using it to back up what is on the public cloud because we have a native backup solution for that, which is provided by the vendor. As our footprint gets bigger, we will continue to evaluate this, but the last time that we did a cost analysis, the cost was not comparable to the solution that public clouds are offering.""The initial setup was complex.""It does not have an easy deployment. The deployment is not something that just anybody can go in and deploy.""We get an alarm if a lot of files are deleted, for example. That could look like ransomware, even if it is not.""The tool must improve the 1-Touch recovery of Oracle and Active Directory.""Not everyone has agents for everything and Commvault has agents for most products. It's the most complete."

More Commvault Cloud Cons →

"In a future release, it would be a benefit to have the ability to add an application as a storage target, as a storage pool. Additionally, they should add more functionality to the administration for the Operation Center.""There have been some sizing issues now, and we are dealing with those.""I would like to see integration with Copy Data Management, which is an IBM product. Right now, these two products are siloed, so if these two become integrated, the product would become a bit of a powerhouse.""The solution must protect against ransomware attacks better.""High availability (HA) is a scalability challenge.""We have had some problems about using storage agents on the X6 environment. It is not quite stable, but it is also not supported in a virtualized environment.""It needs better connectivity with other non-IBM application hardware and non-IBM platforms.""I would like to see a way to have "always on" implemented."

More IBM Spectrum Protect Cons →

"The predominant issue lies in the communication link between the secondary and primary databases.""The pricing of the solution is quite high. They should do what they can to bring it down so that it is more reasonable for customers like us.""For Italian medium-sized companies, the main challenge lies in the cost associated with licenses.""Oracle could be improved by the ability to manage it on the cloud. This on-premises version is secure and reliable, but I'm sure that they will soon provide a cloud solution that will be even better. In one to two years, we will probably move to the cloud—we have already moved to the cloud with Microsoft Exchange, but our databases are still on-premises. I would prefer managing a cloud version of Oracle.""It is a rather complex solution, so it could be more user-friendly.""The database administration needs improvement. With Oracle, we have a lot of features for administrating data, but it might be too many. It needs to be simplified. It should be automated. Looking at Enterprise Manager, there are too many KPIs in place.""A significant improvement for Oracle Data Guard would be enabling the disaster recovery site to handle read and write operations, not just data storage.""For every standby server you have, you must pay a licensing fee, which is the main disadvantage."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."

  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."

  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."
