TIBCO Jaspersoft Room for Improvement

The HTML charts have limitations, and those are only limited to the pro version. There might be some compatibility issues with the dashboard if we're using the latest version and some clients are using the older version. Some features might not be supported.

With the current desktop version, there might be some customization upgrades needed for the chart level or the visualizations level because there are some limitations. A few reports won't have inbuilt scroll options, or some customizations won't be there for every widget level.

TIBCO Jaspersoft has two versions. Version one is the enterprise version, The other one is the community version, and which allows us to use it for free. In the free version, we have to support ourselves. For the enterprise version, you have technical support if you need it. I wish that we had more support while in the portal, at least for the community version, or if we could talk to someone regarding issues, like how to configure or fine-tune would be helpful. We'd like to have help on how to solve some problems when we use the product and have some error or limitation. They need to, at the very least, improve the community.

The Enterprise Edition has support, and we can force some tickets through the portal and then have an engineer support us in some cases. However, in terms of the subscription price, it's a bit high.

Therefore, we'd like to see the community version offer a little bit more support and better documentation and we'd like the enterprise edition to have better pricing.

The Ad Hoc Report Writer does not include as many features as Tableau and needs to be improved to meet expectations.

You have to write a lot of customized code to match the features of Tableau's dashboard.

Performance could be improved.

I would like to see some analysis done prior to data extraction. The data extraction itself could also be improved. It should show which data is ready for conduction.

The stability of TIBCO Jaspersoft needs improvement.

We have identified many areas for improvement. Currently, I'm upgrading to 8.0.3 and we have encountered several issues. For example, our current version of Jasper 7 is not compatible with MySQL 8 data sources as an application DB. We have confirmed with TIBCO Jaspersoft that we cannot connect with Jasper 7 servers, which is a major disadvantage for our product. TIBCO Jaspersoft cannot prevent external application database connectivity just because they do not support it. The connectivity needs to be supported regardless of whether we upgrade from our version or not. We should be able to provide database connectivity across all databases since this is not dependent on Jasper but instead is managed by other teams. We are currently at a standstill, preventing other application upgrades as well.

The customer support who are working on the product needs to be vastly more knowledgeable than those of us who are mere external users. We expect them to be at least a hundred times more proficient in terms of understanding how the reporting process and each functionality work. However, this is not currently the case. Customer support has a lot of room for improvement.

I would like to suggest performance testing-related measures be included in the solution, such as built-in loggers to track connection pools. Additionally, it would be beneficial to have a bundle of performance checks that could be easily set up, including important logs. Furthermore, the data security implementation should be improved, possibly through profile activities. Lastly, the UI should be simplified for domain creation to make the process easier to understand.

TIBCO Jaspersoft currently lacks the ability to read data from web service-related data sources, a feature that is now a standard in the industry. This is a major shortcoming, particularly since it is a feature that is commonly used by the community. Unfortunately, TIBCO does not officially support web service data sources, but this is an issue that needs to be addressed. It is imperative that TIBCO Jaspersoft has the capability to fetch data from web services in order to keep up with industry standards.

I would suggest that TIBCO Jaspersoft make improvements to their reports within their reports. In other words, make the market reports in just one click and in one PDF file.

In future releases, TIBCO Jaspersoft would benefit from enabling you to run multiple reports in one file and incorporating more options related to multiple reports.

For over ten years, the server was developed in Java, using the Java Spring Framework. Last year, I used version 8.0.0 and I did not think it was very good. Currently, it is a Spring Boot, which is new in our framework. I think it is in use because of the legacy of the previous versions, which can sometimes be problematic. Last year, I used a server from a rest service part. We have an in-house front-end service, and TIBCO Jaspersoft was the backend service, we used to store reports and execute reports over the rest of it, but there were many problems. Currently, JSON format is the main format we use, however, in TIBCO Jaspersoft, XML format is the default and JSON did not work because TIBCO did not fix it. For the development part, I think the best thing to do is to make a new server on some other framework. I will not upgrade the old Spring, which is version 8.0.0. That is my opinion. I will create a new server from scratch and copy stuff from the old servers, but not upgrade because the old legacy stuff will then become lost.

Cons:
1) It's not so stable with it's date calculations in domain level reporting.
2) Reports developed in older versions are not supported fully in new versions.

TIBCO support is not that great as the guys are not very keen at resolving the issue and making issues which can be resolved also as enhancements.

One example issue I felt is that we have a domain based report where if you create a bundle file with domain and generate view and report, you will get the labels in bundle file in view and report.

For an existing domain which does not have a bundle file, I tried the same and could not see the functionality working like for the new domain. They said it's an enhancement but I feel they should be able to fix such issues.

They need to improve their support.

The reporting templates have room for improvement. The Jaspersoft Data Fuel will make it easy to create reports. Users that opt to design a template instead of using a pre-existing one, can compile the report from their previous work. To do this, we should access the resource file, find the template which will likely be a .JFC or .JAR file, and comment out the lines where it is installed.

I would like Jaspersoft to include more design in the formula bar in the report. For example, if I am doing some pixel work and have made a report which I want to save in a PDF or Excel file, the formatting from the previous file which I used for taxes or blocks is lost when I save it in Excel format, and it is saved as an image. This is because the cells of Excel don't match the scales of the report I had made. I need a way to make sure my exports in the Excel file are the same as the PDF file.

The cost of Jaspersoft is high and has room for improvement.

Visualization can be improved further in terms of design, and to align it with other, new reporting tools.
According to user feedback, by comparing with other BI Data Discovery Tools. E.g. Qlik Sense. TIBCO Jaspersoft’s chart types and colour tone are not modern enough. Therefore, users will be more willing to use Qlik Sense rather than TIBCO Jaspersoft.

The Jaspersoft domain user interface needs general bug fixes.

The ability to create cross joins on the domains is essential to provide a product that can completely support business reporting needs.

I would like to see them make it more user friendly for developers and include the latest charting libraries.

In this age of tools such as Tableau, developers are used to intuitive interfaces to develop the reports. It's always relative!!

Jaspersoft is an open-source product and lot of times you have to rely on the community to answer some of your queries. Product documentation also could be improved for the developer to reduce the learning curve.

Even though it works well enough for our purposes, one thing I think that could be improved is making it easier to configure. There are a number of settings that you have to manually edit a text config file (like allowing anonymous access to the REST service). While some of the settings can be manipulated through the GUI, not all of them can be. I think that could definitely be improved.

The following aspects need to improve:

  • The possibility to display all report schedules in one place
  • The out-of-the box possibility to integrate with independent installation of PostgreSQL for the JasperReports server
  • Better process control (such as start, stop, restart without failures between various components, etc.)
  • A more straightforward/user-friendly migration of reports between various versions of the JasperReports server

  • Send the report to email with its output as an attachment within the studio.
  • User defined plug-in development and deployment like Pentaho Analytics i.e. a market place feature for server or studio.

Implementing of subreports is such a pain. This functionality could be made faster.

The concept of subreports is to easily embed an existing report in a new report. This may sound simple but implementing it is such a pain. It took me hours to get it right. It is just not straightforward enough.

while I add a report, I just drag drop the icon and establish a connection with the database and it is ready. But sub report is not the case. It should have been just a drag drop and it should act as an individual report on its own only. It takes a long time to give some connections and there is no much documentation available on the same either.

We have experienced session issues with the session management and the user running a report. So the user's environments can be improved, and a better focus should be put on self-service reporting. So a self-service module could help TIBCO go to the next level.

There is scope of improvement in terms of:

  • More flexibility for report / dashboards development.
  • A report bursting option.
  • Caching of query input controls that creates problem.
(In regards to input controls which are based on SQL queries, they show cached data instead of fetching new data every time reports are executed. Input controls still show old data, even if there is a change in data and consequent query results.)
  • Scriptlet execution option before the main data set execution.
