Symantec Data Loss Prevention Primary Use Case

OT
Technical Team Leader at Redington (India) Ltd

Symantec Data Loss Prevention is completely designed for the enterprise area because it enables great segmentation. For example, if you have four branches in different cities of Turkey, you can create different detection servers. You can create a detection server for the endpoint of location one, create a web detection server to detect all web data loss, and create all these servers for each location and user sets, computer sets.

The discover options are very different, and you can discover what's happening in your network and file servers. We had a case where a banking company not using Symantec Data Loss Prevention lost 500 customer information pieces and their personal credit notes through screenshots. A malicious actor created reports for different 500 people, not taking the PDF file of the personal report but instead taking first credit note page screenshots, stealing all data via screenshots. When this case occurred, I suggested there must be a detection method for images because Data Loss Prevention solutions must analyze the details of all images. Initially, Symantec created an OCR module, and they are now fully capable of searching what's inside images.

When discussing this with DLP customers, they asked about bank robbery scenarios involving credit notes and whether Symantec could detect this. I wrote this concern to product development at Symantec. Many engineers wrote to Symantec HQ about this issue, and subsequently, they added the feature.

Symantec DMP is for preventing the loss of data from any part of the network, for example, from the network to the core of the data. It has many props, or as it's called in Symantec DLP, "detection servers." There are many detection servers, such as prevention servers and discover servers. Although they can be installed on one server, they can also be deployed on many servers, and they will prevent data leakage in a powerful manner.

We use this solution for exact and index data matching, vector machine learning and endpoint prevention. We can use USB, make the solution notify a block policy and make response rules. It allows us to add the directory indication, make the agent configuration from the DLP, and then enforce them.

We can also complete different types of single-tier, two-tier and three-tier installations. For single-tier installation, it can enforce or recommend detections servers on the same servers. For two-tier, it can enforce on the same server and the detection server. And for three-tier, Oracle enforced, and the detection server is on separate servers.

We use Symantec Data Loss Prevention mostly for preventing and protecting against email threats. The tool tracks internal to external emails. Whatever attachment there is that's moving from internal to external is also tracked. If someone's sending a file, it would also be forwarded to the team lead or manager. The password for signing into the email should not be shared because when shared, it will be blocked. We have configured these policies in Symantec Data Loss Prevention. The tool also tracks whenever a user transfers data from one machine to another. These are our use cases for it.

They want to see that analysis. If there are any outflows, they want to mediate that as well - especially if there is any breach on the team.

The primary use case is for handling confidential data, such as customer data, employee data, and IT confidential information. We used this solution in some contracting work. We classify the data by assigning each division user their own classification, e.g., confidential, restricted, internal, or public. According to the data we get from the customer, we find fairly unique keywords and common words from the data and we put it on the Symantec DLP engine as a use case or policy. If, for example, the content or classified files cannot leave the organization, I can turn the use case into a policy as keywords mentioning specific data and unique keywords in the documents. This restricts documents from leaving the organization. That's how I create a policy based on the use case.
